Look for a reopening in the WV in late 2009. I guess the EV wasn’t good enough for ‘em.

Interesting concept, execution could be better (chocolates weren’t as tasty as they looked)… but generally still a good spot to chill out at. Chocolate and coffee drinks at very reasonable prices, a large selection of sell-​by-​piece chocolates (caramel was pretty good). and cute chocolatey gifts that won’t break the bank — unlike Max Brenners. They also have a selection of chocolate teas, so this would be the spot to try some out if you’ve never had an opportunity.
Mellow, quiet, bright and clean. 3.5 stars

I like to find things that are a little out of the ordinary. And this place is definately that. The one thing that makes it somewhat ordinary is that it is on an upper floor in a department store (Henri Bendel). Minus one star for that.
As strange as it sounds, someone recommended the french bread with dark chocolate and sea salt sandwich to me. I thought, «hmmm, odd, but what the heck.» so I tried it. and… I LOVED it! The salt set off the bitterness of the dark chocolate perfectly and the sweetness in the chocolate added a nice touch. The crustiness of the french bread was a nice compliment to the warm, meltiness of the chocolate. If you don’t believe me then I dare you to try it!

Strolled over from Union Square for dessert and was enchanted by the exquisite truffle selection … truffle flavors change each month so these may not be available, but the Bitterscotch and Almond truffles were to die for.

Kleines süßes Café mit unzähligen Schokoladenvarianten. Echt klein und süß, so wie einige Läden bei uns zu haus im Prenzel’Berg. Dieser Europäische Eindruck führt sogar dazu, das man Freunde, denen man in Deutschland nicht über den Weg galuafen ist, dort trift und Zeit für nen Café findet. Als Andenken ist nen stylisches Shirt empfehlenswert.

Cute retro wrappers, some interesting flavors like key lime pie, salty pretzel, PB caramel. I tried the malted milk chocolate bar ($ 3). It doesn’t have much malted milk flavor. It’s $ 3 so I wasn’t expecting the best chocolate in the world. It’s decent chocolate. I’ve also tried their chocolate bar tea which is unique and I think, because of the roobios, good for you too. It makes a lovely gift.
In addition to the retro line, they have different wrappers such as a series designed by artists, CBGB bars, and some that come with stencils. Kinda gimmicky but creative.
They also have chocolate covered snacks, caramels, chocolate teas, and luxury chocolate bars ($ 6 each).

I absolutely love their liquid hot chocolate! This is my fav hot chocolate place in NYC! I like it better than Jacques Torres, City Bakery, and Max Brenner’s hot chocolate.
I can’t wait to visit their new location in the east village.

Mmmmm… spicy hot chocolate. Yummy filled chocolates. Cookies that consistently FORCE me to break my diet. Hip, hot staff. A candy bar dedicated to saving (the inevitably doomed) CBGB’s. Boxes of chocolate purchased by a boyfriend who knows how to make me smile. Cool tunes that I may not have heard cascading from the speakers…

This was one of the «things I’ll miss about Jane Street» but they are moving! East 7^th, below TSP-​ish. I’ll see them there!

Gosh, I can’t believe I never Unilocaled about this place! I’ve been buying their yummy Coconut & Chocolate loose leaf tea as well as chocolate truffles as gifts on so many occasions!
This is an adorable little chocolate store a skip from my studio which is my default store to hit up whenever I was in need of a gift. Personally, I can’t attest to the quality and taste of their delicate and cute chocolates because I am not a chocolate kinda gal but all the recipients of my gift raved about it.
I have had their Chocolate Latte and I can say it’s REALLY chocolaty! It was a bit too sweet for my palate but for those who love chocolate, it’s definitely worth having!
I am sad to say this cute little shop will be closing by month end due to the high cost of rent BUT, they’re not closing permanently but are relocating to the EV!

Stupid owners reclaiming their property back and skyrocketing rents.
I prefer this location much better to the one at Henri Bendel’s — that one’s always too crowded on weekends, and I tend to avoid 5^th Ave anyways during shopping/​lunch rush hours.
It’s a great small neighborhood place — the rich and smooth hot chocolate is heavenly, awesome rich and fudgy brownies and I adore the chocolate bars — especially the retro ones which include funky BUT good flavours like PBJ and key lime pie. Try them all!
I’m going to have no choice but to go to Henri Bendel’s now for retro chocolate bars. I’m going to miss you in West Village.

This place is absolutely adorable, with a cute little cove in the back for people to sit; there’s a sink back there, which may be necessary for chocolate lovers. The staff is also very cute and nice, and I love the shirts and array of candy bars, though I haven’t tried them yet. What I HAVE tried is the spicy brownie decked out with chipotle and cinnamon… it’s extremely fragrant and a bit more crumbly and light than fudgey, making it much more manageable.
Definitely come for the brownie, which weighs in at $ 2.50 but is a farely large square. The cookies look swell too.

Chocolate! Chocolate! Chocolate! Hip, laid back and funky. I love this place. Love the fact that the seats in the back have boxes all over them; I love that there are several types of hot chocolate and teas, with bars and bars and bars with great combinations.
I love the music, the atmosphere and the location.
Chocolate Bar is great for a quick pick me up, catching up with friends in the back, presents for the office, or even a present for yourself. The staff is friendly and don’t mind if you camp out. It’s a tad pricey, but I don’t mind supporting a cute local place.
Oh — and the coconut tea tastes like burphi. SO good.

If someone you know is sweet on chocolate, then become their über-​hero and take them to Chocolate bar. Simply put, it’s a chocolate fiend’s Nirvana tucked away in the West Village.
There are chocolate bars of all types, tasty brownies and other assorted treats, and an exquisitely rich cup of hot chocolate which will make your hair stand on end. Let that potent chocolate do the tango with your pleasure receptors in the brain, and for a moment you’ll forget all your troubles…
The staff is friendly and very helpful; I haven’t seen any oompa loompas yet but given the quality of the chocolate they’ve gotta be involved in some way. And the wonderful color scheme of brown, white, and orange gives this little spot a vibrant and cheery atmosphere.
So in short, the nice people, bright character, and chocolate doing the dance de amor on your serotonin receptors, will all work to give you that much needed pick-​me-​up after a day’s worth of stress and exhaustion.

So by the way of serendipity, I came across the Chocolate Bar.
I found irony in this as this was my first time seeking chocolate 9n NYC since the closing of Serendipity3.
Anyway… I was actually looking for the Ink Pad. (To be honest, I never found it, despite being what could not have been more than a block away but I was running late, so I didn’t look THAT hard)
I stopped in for the spicy hot chocolate they were advertising, but they were out. The two counter guys were trying to figure out how to put the new tape in the register) They were nice guys, and apologetic for the delay and the lack of spicy hot chocolate.
I settled on a raspberry hot chocolate, which was ultra rich and ultra sweet. Slight too rich for me, but I got over it quickly. I also bought a box of Vanilla Cocoa tea and a box of Roobios Chocolate Chai Tea.
They have a cute assortment of shirts and buttons, etc advertising the hot chocolate and a bunch of different chocolate bars of the gourmet, but pricey variety.
All in all, I liked it and plan to return.

I made a big mistake. Strike that.
HUGE mistake.
I was in the Chocolate Bar the other afternoon, buying a box of truffles for a friend, and I did not get anything for moi.
Nadanothingzilchzero.
They wrapped my friend’s gift all cutesy-ribbons-n’-bows-ly, she loved it, and I felt warm and fuzzy… but still, I have an empty feeling in the pit of my tum.
Cuz I didn’t get me some. ;)

I loved Chocolate Bar. I had the «Liquid Chocolate», which was unbelievably rich and made me feel like Augustus Gloop slurping on the chocolate river, and a crazy-​good Elvis chocolate (peanut butter and banana marshmallow covered in dark chocolate). Sugar rush, anyone? I wrote more about it here:

If you have a chocolate craving, you’ll be more than satisifed at Chocolate Bar and your teeth just might hurt after, too! (Mine sure did!)

You can’t really go wrong with the Chocolate Bar — whether you’re a dark, milk, or weird flavored chocolate lover. During the warm months, I buy myself a bar to munch on during long walks throughout downtown and during the colder months, I go for the hot chocolate — spicy!
The staff’s here cool too. When I was 3,000 miles away for my dad’s b-​day, they graciously delivered two hot chocolates with brownies for my mom and dad to celebrate the occasion, granted, their store is just across the street from the Chocolate Bar :)

I’m truly torn. Chocolate bar is the happiest place in the world! Punk rock girls in the back making chocolate bars. In the front, a jolly fat singing and dancing man pressing free truffles into my hand on the sly. And in the middle, Rachel Dratch sipping molten cocoa (no joke… she was there too). I stayed in this itsy bitsy Willy Wonka wonderland of chocolate-​induced hyperactivity and spent buttloads of money on chocolate.
But it didn’t taste that great.
So sad.

This being the first truly crisp fall day, i thought it only approprate to have it be the day I have my first hot chocolate of the season. And what better place to have said chocolate than at The Chocolate Bar! I do work at S’Nice across the street alot, and on this crisp fall day, I was doing just that. I pass this place all the time, but have never ventured in, but that changed today when I decided a hot chocolate would the perfect accompaniment to running a couple of errands downtown.
The place itself is very small but very cute — all brown (natch) and orange and cream with a welcoming staff and exquisitiely cute retro-​inspired packaging. But oh, the hot chocolate. I’m a dark chocolate lover — I like it a little bittersweet. This hot chocolate was perfect. Smooth, pure, creamy but not too thick, just the right combination of sweetness with that hint of bite that makes dark chocolate so divine. I am smitten. The perfect way to welcome in the fall weather.

This is the best hot chocolate café in the city. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff is friendly. The perfect place to go in cold and warm weather. Their hot chocolate is nice and thick… it sticks! On warm days, go for their liquid chocolate (hot chocolate on ice). It’s MUCH better than regular chocolate milk. Their chocolate bars come in many yummy flavors like malted milk, peanut butter and caramel, and salty pretzel.
UPDATE: ah, they’ve moved to the East Village, which means I frequent Chocolate Bar more often. Now I can also recommend their chocolate egg cream sodas and their moist, yummy brownies. I want to go here everyday!

Chocolate Bar — back in the day, it was opened by what seemed to be a husband and wife team. Nowadays you only see Allison’s name mentioned. Oh oh oh… well, whatever. The chocolate is still good.
Chocolate Bar’s front-​facing display case features chocolates, as it was explained to me, made by chocolatiers who don’t normally have retail outlets. That’s fine until you hit Jacques Torres, and hey, he just opened up on HoHo/​WeVar/​Whatsis just a few blocks away.
There’s an astounding array of chocolate items crammed into a small space. Maybe you want a chocolate caramel. Or a pain au chocolat. A home made hoho A super-​rich chocolate chocolate chip cookie. Chocolate teas. I’ve got a canister of chocolate chai tea that I keep around just for smelling. Jonathan Adler ceramics. Gift sets. Stuffed animals. Chocolate underwear. (Just kidding on the last bit)
It’s fun to mix and match your own collection of chocolates from the front display case, but I can never remember what’s what. As a result, I usually make a bee-​line for the chocolate bars. The ones in plain orange and white boxes, not the ones with the designer covers.
Or I might go for one of the hot chocolates. Isaac set me straight — the spicy hot chocolate is the way to go. I’ve also got a box of their spicy hot chocolate mix at home for emergency situations. See pics.
The one thing I didn’t care for so much was their gelato. Apparently made by someone in the neighborhood… some sort of sentimental value. Be that as it may, I’ll stick to Ciao Bella (which I know isn’t really Italian style gelato, but that’s another review).

I was thinking about Li Ping’s review, which for some reason keeps being shown to me when I log in. Chocolates can be expensive, but they can also be a very affordable luxury. Granted, a selection of four chocolates is going to cost way more than you’d ever pay for chocolate at Duane Reade, but that’s not a fair comparison. You can get some extremely fine chocolate here for less than the cost of a McDonald’s value meal. It may not get you a lot, but eat it in small bites. Think quality, not quantity.
