COLONY Studios Brooklyn

This place is very open and spacious. I’m here on a film shoot for a commercial. I do sound professionally and can say that the place is NOT great for recording audio as there are other lofts across the hall that cater to weddings and their large events so it’s not uncommon to hear people talking in the background.
There is virtually no parking which makes loading and unloading equipment extra stressful since the driver has expressed multiple times that e feared NYPD would tie his vehicle.
They have a fridge and kitchen area stocked with sodas and other snacks that were offered complimentary. I’m not sure what it cost to rent this place but it’s definitely one of the nicer studios I’ve worked in.

If you are looking for a charming location and a great studio COLONY is your option.
I worked on a couple of projects already, the first one at the studio and the second one at their loft. Both experiences were great with beautiful results and a happy client.
The space speaks by itself; it has a special personality, I haven’t found yet any other place like COLONY in New York.
The staff is really nice and accommodating, always trying to make you feel at home and get you to be comfortable to develop your project the best way.
Now I am looking forward to have a 3^rd project on their rooftop, hopefully soon!

This is the place that comes to mind when you dream of a Brooklyn photography studio! A huge white cyc, exposed brick and rafters, rustic wood floors, skylights, high ceilings and space galore! For anyone who has worked or lived in Manhattan, you will be floored by the amount of space you get to work with. Not to mention the VIEWS and the natural light this place gets; the rooftop and Loft have a gorgeous 180 view of the east river and Manhattan skyline. And for anything else you may need, the staff is extremely accommodating!

I shot an editorial with Colony Studios last December in the loft space. The space is gorgeous, a really rustic warehouse that has beautiful natural light. It is huge and also has amazing red brick walls, some are colored yellow too. It was perfect location for a production that needs that rustic feeling, which was what I had been looking for.
The staff were extremely accommodating and really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Whilst we were not able to fully close the doors at all times, this was explained prior to the production, so we were fully aware and compliant, since we noticed it has to do with fire security and building management policies. They provided 2 PAs at each of the entrances to make sure that no one outside of the production came into the room. The two boys proved to be extremely helpful with set up and tear down too!
In the end we got the job done beautifully and the clients were very happy. Will definitely be coming back here to shoot.

I was recently on a shoot that rented their large space called The Loft. It was a great space, with brick walls, weathered wood ceilings, windows and skylights. Its really a gorgeous space.
HOWEVER, the space joins two different office areas of this large building so the people in those surrounding offices use The Loft as a pass through, or even to use the bathrooms located within the space itself.
This meant that while were setting up or even shooting, workmen with equipment, gaggles of giggling 20-​something girls, and slouchy hipster dudes walked through our space, through our crew and talent, and next to our gear. One notable instance was the guy who stared at us during his slow walk to and from our bathroom to take a crap.
I called Colony Studios and asked them about this and they told me that, yes, these people do have a way of going around but they are frequently stubborn and «don’t want to,» meaning that some stranger’s convenience comes before you. Moreover, Colony said explicitly that the bathroom in the space is NOT for the exclusive use of the renter, and that other people in the building may come into the shoot space to use it while you are renting it.
The bottom line is you PAY good money to use the space and Colony Studios WILL NOT allow you to have it to yourself. You have to put up with people literally walking through your set with Colony’s approval.
EDIT: Shot there a 2^nd time (not my choice). No PA’s to block doors and still lots of people walking through. If anything, there were MORE people this time and their sense of entitlement greater.
I suspect the other review was planted by Colony because it is very far from how the situation really is.
