Cyc Fitness – Hell’s Kitchen

I came again couple times and feel that some other instructors are better than before. So I changes my review, now I just stick to Keoni, Claudia, Elena or Tyler (rank from who I think best to worst) and I think those are good instructors! I don’t think I need to name the bad ones here so if you want good experience guaranteed just try one of those four!

I had my first CYC class yesterday with Dom. My friend brought me and I thought it would be like any other spin class I took at Swerve, Flywheel, and SoulCycle. BUT they proved me wrong. Dom was so friendly and took the time to help me set up my bike since I was new to CYC. His music was literally on point and made us sweat off our butts! CYC and Dom are amazing. I’ll definitely be returning soon.

I have been a fan of Cyc for some time, though some of the instructors are more memorable for me than others in terms of pushing me and really motivating me to be at my best. Keoni is of course the best of the best, and if you can snag one of his classes, they’re not to be missed.
Yes it’s not metrics-​driven like Fly or Swerve, but sometimes you just want to clear your head and focus on something more than the numbers, and a really good Cyc class does that so well.
Bonus points to this location for the front desk staff, who remember me by name and are some of the friendliest in the spin circuit!

The spin experience is closer to soul cycle than flywheel. No meters on the bikes. Facilities are clean and staff are friendly. I would prefer a more competitive cycling experience but the arms section was good.

I love this studio! Have been spinning for over a year now religiously, and this is by far my favorite. The location is great and the staff and instructors are so welcoming and motivating. If you haven’t had a chance yet, check them out! You won’t be disappointed.
Highlights:
–THE FRONT DESK!!! All of the staff are so friendly and helpful. I love that I can go in and everyone knows me by name. They definitely take the time to make riders feel at home, and making sure everyone has a great experience!
–The instructors and classes are just as awesome! I love that they offer 4 different types of classes all throughout the week. I’ve yet to have an instructor that I didn’t like. They all have their own unique styles and personalities, and they all will push you to do your best.
Negatives:
–None.

This place is great — it’s still not the best in the city (that starts with an ‘s’ and ends with ‘oulcycle’) but it’s a solid workout guaranteed to make you sweat. I’ve been to classes at this location and the one at the Astor Place David Barton, and the Hell’s Kitchen location is far superior. The room is weirdly small and kind of cramped, but I like that for a spin class — you can feel the energy of the room better than you can with the massive Astor Place room. The music is good, props to the staff for playing Beyonce’s «Lemonade» in its entirety this week, it’s a great album to shower to. Which brings me to the one issue: the showers, or rather lack thereof. There are only two showers in the women’s changing room, and the line can get long. They’re also a bit slippery, which led to a somewhat nerve wracking experience at 9 AM.
As far as the actual class, it’s solid, with choreography that’s very similar to SoulCycle (tap-​backs galore). The difference is that Cyc has more weighted segments, which is a drag if you’re tired but leaves you feeling like you’ve actually gotten a full-​body workout by the end. The only other drag are the bikes: they’re not that sturdy (mine was actually really loose in the handlebars, and one of the employees couldn’t adjust it. I wish they would get better bikes, but for the days that I don’t feel like shelling out a serious wad of cash, everything they’re doing is just fine.

I never write Unilocal reviews… But… These classes are not safe. I regularly take spin class at PELETON, Flywheel, Revolve and Swerve… Those are safe, good workouts where the instructors generally focus on your technique– ESPECIALLY during weights. The instructors at Cyc have you use too little resistance going too fast and too high resistance while you’re using weights. Also, being out of the seat of the bike and lifting weights is horrible for your back. My back was killing me for 3 days after and I spin all the time and never have problems.
It sucks because the facility is so nice and convenient location!

Big fan! Great teachers, great music, and super helpful staff. Great location for my place of employment, but only two showers.
P. S. I’m not a big fan of the heavy weight-​lifting class, so I tend to veer towards the CycLean.

Class was great. I’m an avid Soul Cycler and after trying my first class here I was really impressed and would almost prefer to go to Cyc than Soul Cycle. The use of weighted bags was a really good addition to the class and my arms were actually sore the next day, something that never happens after Soul Cycle. The only negative is that the music was SO loud. When there was a pause in the music I would literally hear my ears ringing. After leaving class I saw other classmates holding their ears as well. It took me to the next morning to fully get my hearing back and I’m 26 with no hearing issues. Will definitely be using ear plugs next time.

My favorite spin studio in Manhattan! Very clean & modern studio, plenty of lockers, free shoe rentals, courteous front desk. Visited this location several times, and the cycologist was friendly and helped me adjust my bike settings each time. I like the energy & intensity of the cycologists and music here better than at other competing studios.
Only drawback is lack of metrics display on bikes.

Weirdest experience I have ever had at a workout. I would not recommend it.

If you are serious about your workout don’t come here.
The dead giveaway should have been that I came for an early morning class and there were only 10 people. If you are only filling 25% of your bikes at peak exercising hours, HELLO! there’s a problem.
Likes:

–shoes and cycling studio were clean
Dislikes:
–The instructor was not on the bike for the majority of the class – a personal pet peeve of mine. Unless you are teaching classes back to back then you need to be working out with the class. Period.
–Instructor spent most of the class playing with the lights, which was incredibly distracting
–Music was way too loud.
–Excessive, complicated choreography that was hard to understand because it was so noisy.
–No metrics on the bikes so it’s hard to know what speed/rpm’s you should be aiming for
–Bike was shaky in several parts and that shoes didn’t want to come out at the end. Dangerous!!! Invest in better bikes. On the way out of the class, one girl said that she actually hurt herself.
–I didn’t get the whole nonsense with the bean bag weights. In addition to not being much of a workout, it’s dangerous to stand on the pedals with only one arm on the bike. Y’all need some lessons in spin safety.
And don’t get me started on the showers, which were incredibly GROSS! The water was lukewarm and the pressure was so low that I could barely rinse off. Also, I would suggest not putting out Dove products in the showers because they are so thick that they leave a greasy film on the floor (not helped of course by that low water pressure)…disgusting. Not to mention dangerous. I couldn’t get out of there faster!!!
The biggest waste of 60 minutes ever. Should have stayed in bed. Cyc Fitness, you need to up your game.

Absolute favorite cycling studio in NYC. By far. By really really really far.
Not only is the front desk staff incredibly helpful and polite (they even safeguarded my phone and credit card after I left it in the studio TWICE) but the amenities are great. There is an abundance of lockers, a chalk wall for inspo and ideas and a glam&go bar inside. The studio itself is smaller also, which has pros and cons (none that outweigh the pros). The locker room is smaller (two showers and two stalls) but the cycling studio itself is also smaller resulting in a boutique feel and an up close and personal ride with the instructors.
While Tyler has my heart, I’ve never taken an instructor I didn’t like. Music is always on point and those encouraging words do SO much to keep you going.
Finally done experimenting with cycling studios in the city. CYC, you win.

I’ve been to Cyc at David Barton’s gym on Astor Place and was actually not a fan of that class (although the space was pretty) but decided to give this location a chance since it’s walkable from my office. Glad I did! Now this is not as fancy as David Barton, but it’s no shack either. The facilities are a mix of new and industrial and thankfully, there are plenty of lockers spread out through the floor so you are not just limited to the ones in the restroom (although I think a morning class here would be a struggle with the limited amount of showers available).
Cyclift was actually my last work out of 2015 and I could not have chosen a more spirited class than Elena’s, who reminds me of a younger, cheerleader version of Anna Faris. The music, energy, and momentum were exactly what I did not know I was looking for. This is not my choice for a weekend workout (Peloton wins out as the more challenging and high-​tech cycling class), but a great way to end a grueling workday and when I don’t want to use much brain power.
My only gripe is with the front desk who seemed like miserable cows. maybe they should take Elena’s class some time.

I wanted so much to like Cyc. The location is so convenient, and I’m always looking for new ways to fit spin into my schedule. But everything about it let me down.
I’ll put my biggest complaint first — I felt like the instructor had no idea what he was doing! The majority of the class I felt like I was worrying for my safety, because he had us spinning WAY too fast, with almost no resistance. I’ve never ever had to use the emergency brake before in a class, and I had to press it more than once with David because the tempo he wanted us at (double timing a standard pop song) was out of control. I seriously was concerned that I could injure my knees if I missed a beat because my legs were so out of control, and I was even falling behind the tempo that he wanted us at. Any good spin instructor knows that just pedaling fast is not the point — it’s a balance between speed and resistance, and David didn’t have either one of those right. There were only two or three songs in the whole 60 minute class where I felt like the resistance was challenging… mostly it was just out of control pedaling.
David also seemed more interested in playing with the lights than actually instructing. Every few minutes he’d have the remote in his hand messing with the lights… blue light… red light… blacklight…no light at all. I mean, yeah it looks cool, but I’d rather my spin instructor actually be focused on our workout and form than what the lights are doing. He even got off the bike and beat this random drum for like 30 seconds (not even to the beat of the music, or to a beat that we were supposed to ride to. Just like random noise). Really not a fan of any of that.
Other than my major issues with the instructor, everything else at Cyc was also a little disappointing. The bikes are low-​tech (aka no screens or anything), which is perfectly fine, but a bit of a let-​down for someone who really uses the screens at some other studios to make sure RPM and resistance are at the right place. The weight sections are weird — the whole «sports-​inspired movements» sound fun in theory, but in practice, you spend almost the whole time trying to figure out how to do the movement correctly (and no, the instructor did not seem interested in checking our technique at all). The bikes were also way too close together. I was bumping the person on either side of me during the weight sections, which is just not okay. The locker room is perfectly fine, but the showers are not private — just a curtain on one and a frosted glass door on the other (so you can see the shape of the person through it… awkward!).
The only pros were that the waiting area was very nice, they have plenty of hair tools (dryers, curlers, hairspray) in the locker room if you’re planning on going out afterwards (?), and the location is super convenient. But that’s not enough to get me to come back to a class where I didn’t feel safe. PLEASE Cyc, make sure that your instructors know what they’re doing, or you’re going to injure someone!

Avoided Cyc for way too long because I thought the shoes weren’t free — it’s mislabeled on Classpass and the HK Cyc has very nice, shiny free shoe rentals. Anyway, this is the only spinning studio where I’ve had consistently excellent instructors with good music and terrific energy. Even though they don’t have performance metrics, I have always had a great experience at Cyc and am pumped every time for class. There’s a good balance of strength training in the regular class but I may venture and try CycLift one day that I’m free. It’s a fun time and I highly recommend trying it!

Cyc fantatic here. Love, love, love the classes. I try to take classes with Keoni and Jessalyn (and Kyle when he comes back to town). I recently tried a class with Elena and thought she was great. The studio here is smaller than that one at Astor Place, and therefore, the locker room is teeny — only 2 showers and 2 bathroom stalls. But, there are lockers in a more communal space so if you don’t need to use the locker room, you can grab your things and be out in a jiffy. The studios also recently introduced new class formats (CYC45 is 45 minutes of riding to the beat, including segments with weights; CYC60 is 60 minutes long; CYCLean is all riding, no weights; and CYCLift has a few more weighted segments than CYC45). NB: these are beats-​based classes, no metrics like Flywheel or Peloton. I enjoy being in the moment and riding based on feel, and would head to the other studios if I feel like I need to quantify my workout.
Tips: No need to bring locks, their lockers use a 4 digit combo. Also, bring your own water bottle or you can buy one from the front desk. Lastly, shoes are complimentary. See you at the studio!

The Cyc studio in Hell’s Kitchen is new and clean, but what it lacks is technology on the bikes. I’m surprised that new studios are opening these days and not including monitors on the bikes. I love being able to track my rides at Flywheel and Peloton. When I’m at a spin studio that doesn’t have a monitor to gauge my resistant and exertion it makes it difficult to know how hard I’m working.
The classes at Cyc have a great energy and the instructors are lively and make class fun. Some of the instructors are creative in how they incorporate the provided weights into the class.
The Cyc Hell’s Kitchen location is convenient to my work, so it’s easy for me to pop in for spin after work. I always feel energized after leaving class and despite the lack of technology on the bikes I will continue to spin here.

I’ve never belonged to a cycling studio before, but heard rave reviews about Cyc since they opened a few blocks from my office in Hell’s Kitchen. Stuck in a somewhat boring fitness rut these days, I decided to give Cyc a shot this morning and was so glad I did! The staff and clients were all SO nice and welcoming (I am guilty of generalizing cycling studios as cult-​y and intimidating). Equipment was clean, class instructor (Hunter) was energetic and dynamic, and music was on point.
There are complimentary towels, shoes, and shower amenities (shampoo, conditioner, and soap) available, which is seriously awesome. There is also a cute little fitness boutique. I do wish the Hell’s Kitchen location best of luck, and hope they expand the shower and locker room facility as the clientele continues to grow :).

Was fortunate enough to land a spot in the first class ever in this studio! Entrance is a bit small and can be missed, but once you enter and proceed down the stairs you will find one of the best studio experiences in NYC!
I’m an avid spinner and very familiar with the other locations. This one takes it to a whole new level and between the spacious changing and locker area to the bathrooms and energy of the studio, I couldn’t believe how amazing it was.
Full body workout. One of the best ever!
