Disenchanted! A New Musical Comedy

Do not get me wrong, I liked-​liked this show but it was not worth the $ 90 price tag for a very basic stage, very few costume changes and emotionally layered, but simplistic musical numbers. Yet, there are sizeable discounts to obtain through LIvingsocial & Groupon, so research those before purchasing.
This show was a feminist parody highlighting the subjugation propagated by the Disney cartoon princess machine. As a bitter Snow White points out at the beginning of the show every princess needs to marry a prince to become whole, she is incapable of saving herself, she is somewhat ditzy or she is dressed far too sexily for what is presumably a teenage to young adult girl. Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty were almost the TLC of narrators for me but instead of crazy, sexy, cool they struck me as fed-​up, flighty and narcoleptically enthusiastic.
As a woman in the 21^st century the moral of the monologues and songs presented by a hick-​accented little Mermaid, a scarily Aryan Rapunzel, a disenfranchised Pocahantas and a sexually aware Princess Jasmine really resonated with me. Female archetypes exist as a result of societal norms. Although times are a-​changing, a lot of the characters correctly point out that they are a victim of circumstance, as their stories were re-​interpreted and reformulated by men.
In almost sad and succinct ways each character’s musical numbers give insight into their plight and how they wish to make their own happy endings free from what was expected of them. Although I do not think the play is entirely appropriate for young girls, the message is quite inspiring. The majority of the characters on stage fought to be who they are and were essentially saving themselves.
Even though the show had more than a few standouts (hillbilly Ariel was a hilariously sad Jerry-​Springer style interpretation and Cinderella was a ditz trying to break free from what she was told) the comedic physicality, acting and singing voice of the actress who played all the Pan-​Asian/​Middle Eastern/​Native American princesses was a talent knockout. The show stopped at certain points due to her hilarity. She was the MVP in a cast of clear stand-​outs.
Even though I shall likely not see this show again, you should try it. Just make sure to try to obtain discounted tickets because even though I appreciate the message, the backdrop was a bit basic for a nearly hundred dollar ticket.

Hysterical! Took my 15 year old daughter and it was 90 minutes of pure laughter! Loved it!

All the ladies did a fantastic job in their roles, even a couple of them portray more than one princess (little mermaid/​belle and mulan/​pocahontas/​jasmine) and they all can sang!
you have Snow White=leader of clique who is not so sweet as her disney counterpart
* Cinderella= quirky+ditzy + bubbly
* Sleeping Beauty= party girl with narcolepsy
* Belle= kooky gal who suffers from stockholm syndrome + schizophrenia
* Little Mermaid= rebellious + trashy princess
* Mulan= quirky + lesbro of the group
* Rapunzel= Uni-​brow German dominatrix princess who loathes princess merchandising
* Pocahontas= her spiel is on the history of pochontas and not disney version
* Jasmine= was Princess Badroulbadour, now it’s Jasmine
* Tiana= newbie princess who is classy + feisty
The highlights of the show for me were:
— the trio= Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty
— Rapunzel’s song
–Little Mermaid’s song
–Mulan’s random behavior
— All the princesses’ outfits and various backdrop settings
Overall, these performances were more of a variety show acts
i was actually kind of expecting a story-​line but that’s ok since it was very entertaining

Okay this might be one of my favorite shows that I have seen! I didn’t go with very high expectations… I am not a huge Disney fan but I thought that the premise of the show was entertaining. I like when someone takes something old and makes it irreverent and new!
They were correct that is not a show for young Disney princess obsessed girls. but it probably should be. Let our young girls grow up with a little reality instead of Disney complexes. Without ruining the show, it is hilarious and on the raunchy side — which I personally loved!

This play is absent a plot. I felt it was running long since it was the basically the same thing again and again with a different Disney princess. By the third princess, I was over the one joke. It was too repetitive for me. The stand out for me was the actress who played Mulan. This musical comedy is adult themed. I wouldn’t bring a child even though it is about Disney princesses.
Disenchanted is playing at the upstairs auditorium at the Westside Theatre, which was formerly a church. The problem when I was there in the wintertime was the auditorium was super warm, too much so. The bathrooms were not easy to get to from the upstairs auditorium since you have to go back up the side of the auditorium, down the back of the seats and then two flight down after you get out of the auditorium. If you have a disability, it is difficult.

Amazing show about the «true» stories and feelings behind the Princesses, along with a few hilarious pot shots at the gender lines and Mr. Walt. The vocals was great, broadway-​worthy, and the songs were well written. It was a nice twist on the princesses’ stories and although it had a couple of curses and raunchy innuendoes it’s likely less than kids hear in school. I took a teenage family member along who loved it as well.
The seats were very comfortable and pretty much a good view from everywhere. There is a snack and drink bar right at the entrance and the theater is reminiscent of an old style cinema. Loved it.
Definitely go see this, i will likely go again.

Great show, full of laughs. One of the funniest off Broadway shows I seen lately.

A single-​joke review extended to a tedious hour and forty minutes. If you think you’ll enjoy song after song after song after song after song after song of parody Disney fairy-​tale princesses singing about how annoyed they are to be misrepresented in Disney movies, you’ve found your show. To be fair, though, the cast had universally good singing voices and did as well as they could with the extremely limited material.

Such a great show! I went with a group of friends and everyone loved it! It of course is even more hilarious if you grew up and are familiar with the Disney movies but my bf who oddly had not seen all of the Disney flicks when growing up still really enjoyed it. A off Broadway must see!

THEATER: Small — doesn’t matter if you’re in the back or in the front (of the «middle» section).
RECOMMENDED SEATS: Third row and back as the first two rows will you looking slightly up.
SCRIPT/​PLOT: All right; sometimes cheesy, but for the most part, cute (so befitting of Disney ^_​~).
MUSICAL NUMBERS: Catchy! My top three favorites: «All I Wanna Do Is Eat», «Without The Guy», and «Insane!» I’m still listening to «Without The Guy» on YouTube LOL.
CASTING: Perfect! 6 talented and strong ladies! Shout out to Lulu Picart!
ACTING: Very good. However, sometimes a bit over the top, but this could be due to the script.
SINGING: Pitch perfect, wide-​range and amazing! (Check out some of the limited videos on YouTube).
COSTUMES: Pretty dresses for our pretty Disney Princesses!
MY WISH: Please come out with a cast album for «Disenchanted»!
Verdict: «Disenchanted» is quite enchanting and mesmerizing — both for the guys and the gals (I went with 7 guys and 7 girls)! Not the funniest relative to other parodies, comedy shows, etc, but definitely entertaining! If you like musicals, satires, and Disney princesses, I’d recommend this. Otherwise, skip it as you probably won’t get the inside Disney jokes as easily (even though a brief synopsis of each Disney tale is explained).

I attended this musical with a large group of fourteen — 7 guys and 7 girls — and they all enjoyed the show. We were seated in the first two rows (Each row has 12 seats). I sat center of the second row, but if I were to go back, I’d sit further back as the stage at that spot was a tad too high. The theater is a small space, about the size of a small movie theater or small lecture hall, so wherever you sit, you’ll still have a great view.
I initially worried that the guys may not be as entertained since this is a show about Disney princesses, but to my relief, they were laughing as much as the ladies during the show. While the show definitely sends a great message to women about being strong and not falling into the «damsel-​in-​distress» characterization that so many of the Disney Princesses appear to be, the characters in «Disenchanted» are relatable to anyone when it comes to the topic of internal conflicts: the strong desire to please others, the struggle on self-​image, the need to fit in and be accepted and so on — all in a light and humorous tone of course ^_​~.
Overall, we were laughing, were hooked on the tunes, and had a good time! I’m definitely a fan and would love to buy the soundtrack (if they come out with one)!

This is a pretty funny and silly show on the famous Disney princesses! I enjoyed hearing tales from the Little Mermaid, Belle (those clocks and teacups turned her crazy!), Jasmine, Mulan, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Pocahontas, Snow White, and the Princess from the Princess & the Frog (hmm I feel like I’m missing someone else???).
Anyways, it is fun to wonder how the princesses actually fared after they got married (such as Cinderella from «Into the Woods»). Did they really live happily ever after? Find out in this off-​Broadway show!

HILARIOUS!!! Was non stop laughter for the entire 90 min show! Highly recommend! Not a show for children, lots of adult humor. Good for older teens and up.

Outstanding! A bargain on top of that. Great music wonderful set of talented woman actors and music. Great signing to make the evening really special. Also attended Beautiful this weekend but Disenchanted was just as enjoyable and full of humor.

This show was hysterical! I laughed through the whole 90 minute performance. The woman were amazing and their voices! I wish I would have heard about the show sooner. Hope they bring back this show soon! Would love to see it again and bring more friends

This show was hysterical! My Sister & I went as her Xmas gift, and we had such a fun time! I got the tickets off of groupon, and they were front row seats!!! It’s a very small, off-​Broadway theater, so our feet were actually touching the stage when we stretched out our legs, BUT we were not uncomfortable & we laughed all night. The performers are extremely talented singers and the story lines were hysterical. Keep in mind-​this is an adults only show!!! Expect the princesses to curse, make sexual jokes & sing a song called «Big Tits». Aside from all the comedy, it really does make you realize (if you haven’t already) all of the subliminal messaging these original stories & movies put us through. It’s all about laughing, having a good time, and being independent! I love Disney & I loved this show!

I’m always up for some culture, along with some laughs, and off-​Broadway sometimes offers the best of both worlds. Was more than happy to attend a performance of Disenchanted! as part of a Unilocal night event. When I read about the show and found out the storyline was a take on the Disney princesses I knew it would be hilarious — and it was! I’ll admit that I am a Disney fan and have seen all the movies, been to the parks, bought all of Dark Lord Mickey’s merchandise, etc, so this was a no-​brainer to attend.
The stage setup is simple with just a few props and backgrounds which works perfectly and compliments the actresses just right for each of their numbers. The St Clemens theater is is simple in itself and you get the impression you’re sitting in a school study hall with comfortable stadium seating and a great view of the stage. Good acoustics and AC too which was surprisingly welcomed. No frills setup for sure but very effective and intimate. Worked extremely well when they got the audience to participate in a sing along competition. Yes, that happened.
As for the actual show it was a blast! Each number was sung wonderfully with a lot of humor and wit. You’re laughing all throughout and feel as if you’re part of the inside joke. Oh, there are times that it gets a bit dirty, and perhaps bawdy, so this is more of an adult show and not really one you want to take the small kiddies to see. It’s almost as if the Disney Princesses are revolting against men’s influence in general and decided to stage an old-​timey musical variety show with a feminist kick, vaudeville, slapstick, and sexual innuendos thown in for good measure. Snow White plays the ringleader and she is fantastic, along with her two main gals Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty running the show. Little Mermaid, Mulan, Princess Jasmine, Pocahontas, Belle, The Frog Princess and Rapunzel are all part of the gang. Each one was hilarious, talented, and can really sing! At times it is so over the top, can be a bit corny, and highly politically incorrect too, but that is part of the fun of Disenchanted! Just go with it and laugh along. If you have seen the movies and are a Disney fan you will get it. I found this 90 minute performance extremely funny as this type of humor suits me just fine. The Disney princesses rocked it!
Watch out boys as Snow White and her Princess Posse don’t need no fairy tales or glass slippers!

As a girl who grew up in the 90s, I pretended to be Ariel in my bathtub and my grandparents were always willing to let me play «Cinderella» so I’d dust all the hard to reach lower parts of their home. I walked to this play liking the concept of «unhappily ever after» tales and I walked out fully enamored with it.
After a meal down the street, we grabbed our tickets from will call and waited outside to meet up with our notoriously late friends. Thankfully, they arrived about 5 minutes before the show began and we hustled inside and up the stairs to the small intimate theater. I love small theaters, especially when they are in refurbished spaces. Why wouldn’t you want to have a show that features the uninhibited and extraordinary stories of Post-​Prince Princesses in the upper levels of a church? In a small space, you can fully immerse yourself in the performance and the actors can hear every giggle and snort of laughter.
Once the lights went down, we were introduced to Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. They catapulted us into an amazing introduction that set the high paced, electric energy for the remainder of the show. Snow white is a fantastic lead. She delivered her lines with wit and sarcasm, intelligence and charm. My favorite actor was the singular Asian actor that portrayed not only Mulan, but also Jasmine and Pocahontas. Maybe not culturally sensitive but hysterical none the less. I don’t think I have laughed that hard in a performance in a long time. The characters were amazing, strong voiced and expertly portrayed. These are not your childhood princesses and they make sure you know it with songs about chest size, skin color, and sexual orientation. I was completely enthralled the entire hour and a half they were on stage. (P.S. Disenchanted, please let me buy the soundtrack. I would have already memorized it!)
I recommend this show to anyone and everyone who loved Disney as a child and as an adult, realized that being a princess is not all Walt made it out to be. I would like to thank Ruggy and Unilocal for giving me the opportunity to see this stellar performance. Now go see this show before it becomes ridiculously expensive and so popular that you cannot get tickets.

I can’t stop raving about this show to my friends and family; this is one of those rare Off-​Broadway gems that you don’t want to miss.
The music, set, cast, lyrics and band pack a wallop, and I can’t get the show out of my head. I wish I could buy the soundtrack, in fact, because it would be on heavy rotation on my iPod; there’s so much humor and subtext in the lyrics that there’s something new to discover each time. The Princess Who Kissed the Frog, Mulan, Princess Jasmine, Show White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and Pocahontas all make an appearance … and they don’t disappoint!
Nothing Grimm about these fairy tale princesses!

If you like satire and are a fan of classic Disney moves, Disenchanted is a must see. The shows witty take on what «really» happened to the famed Disney princess is a hilarious mix of adult humor and girl power that will have you rolling in your seat with laughter.
Walking into the Theater at St. Clemens**, I really had no idea what to expect; When you hear that a play is just Off Broadway you somehow expect the venue to be more on the extravagant side than not. St. Clemens Theater, while certainly not overly glamorous did provide a much more intimate show that a larger venue would have — this small detail turned out to be one of the best features of the performance. Walking into the lobby, we found a small will call booth and were told there was no intermission, and the theater was above us. We made our way up the curving stairs and found what looked a bit like «pop up» theater; the seats, arranged in a bleacher-​esque style were comfortable (unless you were sitting in the front row, then you were stuck with plastic chairs), the live band (clearly visible off to the side of the stage) was quite small, but still very effective. All in all this performance felt a bit like it was in a middle school auditorium, but the actresses were so good this fact was quickly overlooked. This show would do very well in a larger theater, there is no doubt about it, but I honestly feel like it would lose some of its charm if the «intimacy factor» were removed.
I do not want to ruin the jokes of this play; as such I will omit most of what I saw. That being said there are a few things about this show I can’t help but mention. Snow White (one of the three main actresses, along with Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella) really stole the show for me; her strong personally, crass jokes, and amazing voice set the mood for the whole performance — everyone else seemed to be a supporting character when she was on stage. My other favorites included the white trash Little Mermaid (awesome), and of course the one Asian lady who played the part of stand-​in minority (I found this so hilarious I was almost crying; she played Princess Jasmine, Mulan, and Pocahontas — yes extremely culturally insensitive, and yes extremely funny). The actress who played all these roles really should be commended; her performance (s) were funny, at times moving, and always spot on. I won’t ruin any more of the show for you, but I will say that this is one of the funnies musicals I’ve seen in a while.
A no frills show, these ladies took a simple stage with simple props and delivered a spectacular performance that is sure to be extremely popular. Thanks (as always) to Ruggy and UnilocalNYC for
