I injured myself while skiing out of state and was referred to Dr. Stein upon discharge from hospital. When I showed up for my follow-​up appointment, it turned out that he doesn’t deal with bone fractures and dismissed me in less than 5 minutes. I understand that not all doctors treat all injuries, but am puzzled why he didn’t simply tell the social worker so when they called him from the hospital with my case. Not only did he waste my time in accepting my case and my money with the two $ 20 cabs I took to his office, he still had the audacity to charge me for the visit.

Dr. Stein and his staff were extremely caring and professional. I felt very confident and supported throughout my recovery. I had minimal pain after the surgery and am very pleased with the outcome. Many people have remarked that rotator cuff surgery is often difficult and the recovery is prolonged and painful. I cannot stress how pleased I am that this was not my experience with Dr. Stein. Even my physical therapist is amazed at the good outcome.

Dr. Stein may very well be a great physician; I wouldn’t know because evidently my condition doesn’t require medical intervention. That said, his bedside manner really stinks. (His PA, Dana, is pretty cool though).
If having a Doctor with good interpersonal skills who patiently explains their diagnosis is an important factor to you, there are many quality alternatives in the city such as The Hospital for Special Surgery.

Dr. Stein did my arthroscopic knee surgery for a torn meniscus. First, I have to say I love his staff (his PA Dana is wonderful). They are nice, caring, professional. Dr. Stein was nice as well and came highly recommended. I chose him because he is a very capable surgeon. Had surgery on Monday. Dr. Stein came in before the surgery and marked my knee. I went in to the operating room, woke up in outpatient care. The recovery room nurse went to see if Dr. Stein wanted to see me before I went home and I was told he’d call me later, which was fine. The hospital nurses called twice to check up on me and Dr. Stein’s office called the next day to see how I was, go over a few things I should be doing and schedule my appointment to have my stitches removed. The only thing I found kind of odd was Dr. Stein never called me to see how I was doing. Was I in pain? Did I have any questions for him? Not a huge deal, but struck me as unusual that the doctor didn’t call personally to follow up. As far as I can tell, based on only 5 days later, everything went well. I was walking the same day and went to work the day after the surgery, although I chose the bus over the subway stairs. The pain is about twice as bad as the tear felt. Uncomfortable, but not really painful unless you sit for too long and don’t move your knee. Getting up in the morning is the worst part but once you get moving, it’s manageable. We’ll see how I feel in a few weeks.

Dr. Stein and his office were great to deal with, they explained all aspects of my surgery and rehab, and answered all my questions. I was never rushed, and I felt comfortable that I was getting quality care.

I went to Dr. Stein for an ACL surgery. I was treated wonderfully by Dr. Stein and his entire staff every step of the way and am on my way to a full recovery.

Dr. Stein did my arthroscopic knee surgery for a torn meniscus. It’s been a few months and everything has healed well and the pain in my knee has decreased significantly. There is still a little bit of annoyance in the knee but it’s probably due to other muscular issues (says my physical therapist).
Also I think it’s worth mentioning that I had a few hiccups in scheduling and rescheduling my surgery. The team, Dr. Stein and I were all ready for my surgery (the first time) and right before going in something came up that prevented us from completing it that day. Dr Stein was extremely understanding and patient with me that day which was so nice — he made me feel totally ok about everything. I ended up rescheduling about 4 times. The day of my actual surgery, something else came up on my end that delayed our surgery about 2 or 3 hours. Again, Dr Stein was really cool about. Dana was also always very polite and was happy to help me reschedule so many times. Great experience all around on my end (maybe not so much for them hehe).

Dr. Stein and his staff are very knowledgeable, efficient and highly professional. I was very pleased with the treatment I have received from Dr. Stein and his P.A. Dana Silver. I had issues with my knees and they have felt much better after seeking treatment from Dr. Stein. I would highly recommend him and his staff to others who want a no nonsense, efficient office that treats you with respect.

I am 7 weeks post arthroscopy on torn meniscus both lateral and interior and at the recommend physical therapy as I write this. Dr. Stein and his PA Dana Silver are some of the most professional health practitioners I have had the pleasure of knowing. No false praise from a man who earns his living in the healthcare field. As for the staff they are competent and will treat you with the respect you afford them.

I’ve gone to Dr. Drew twice– once for an ankle injury and once for a shoulder injury. both times I found the experience to be extremely enjoyable. Unlike other doctors where many times patients can feel like the doctor is just out for money, in no way did Dr. Drew make me feel this way– the exact opposite in fact. I felt he was nothing but honest with me and even suggested putting off surgery until I felt it was absolutely necessary– a true breath of fresh air. I give a full vote of confidence to Dr. Stein and his staff– all around a very enjoyable visit to the doctor’s office.

I went there once! He had no time at all for me! Though I even paid cash! He was flirting with the secretary instead of checking out my knee and tells me I can’t do anything for you! Lol he was busy with the secretary! Found a much better doctor, who was able to help me!

This review says more about his staff than Dr. Stein. I saw him three times for a sprain or tendonitis that wasn’t healing and we were trying various therapies to see if we could avoid surgery. His bedside manner was great, his office clean and upated. This morning despite my having an appointment card his receptionist didn’t have the appointment in her system and he wasn’t in the office. Rather than reschedule me and get a follow-​up question to him like I wanted, she insisted I see the PE. Her explanation — if the doctor wanted me to come in today «knowing that he wasn’t going to be in,» that meant he wanted me to see his PE. I can only guess this was somehow covering for her mistake but by her explanation she was also telling me that my doctor KNEW he was going to be out and wanted me to see someone else but didn’t bother to tell me so I could make the decision whether I was willing to see someone else. So that’s what I’m going to do… see someone else and not return here.

I went to Dr. Stein recently for a sprained ankle that wasn’t mending properly. He seems fine and his midtown office is efficient with almost no wait the two times I’ve been there. My issue is that his front desk is so incompetent that it’s worth it to me to find another physician. The first time I was there his receptionist was so rude in taking my insurance info that I was sure I was on some kind of candid camera show. In addition to being rude, she was completely incompetent and submitted both the wrong ID number and address for me, ensuring my claim was denied. I’ve spent two hours I don’t have on the phone with the medical billing office resolving the situation. Better to just go to the hospital or established facility and deal with staff who was been trained properly.

I was recommended by my roommate to see Dr. Stein for some knee pain I was having. I was extremely satisfied with the experience overall. His sleek office is conveniently located in midtown close to all major subways. His front desk staff was personable and efficient. The doctor and PA were expedient in helping me understand the pathology behind my injury and in choosing a non-​aggressive treatment plan, which was a breath of fresh air compared with so many surgeons who are just looking to book a surgery. There was close to no wait time. It was an extremely pleasant encounter, as far as visiting the doctor goes

Dr Stein changed my life. Some of the reviews complained about his bed side manner but if you want to see a real specialist instead of your baby sitter, I would highly recommend Dr. Stein and his wonderful staff.
My story and why I think he’s a great choice.
I had a knee collision in 2006 playing basketball. I didn’t have insurance to get it checked out. and was in pain for 10 days as I could not straighten my knee. The pain was unbearable but eventually subsided.
In 2007, I received insurance and got a x-​ray and MRI on the knee, there were no issues they said, however my knee would hurt after any physical activity.
I went on further to see 3 – 4 different orthopedic afterwards (even went to HSS) and the results were always the same. Using the same MRI but new x-​rays, i was given anti inflammatories and instructed to go to physical therapy. Nothing is wrong with me they said, just jumper’s knee.
Fast forward tot 2011, Dr Stein was my 5^th or 6^th orthopedic. I almost went to a new one every year because my knee condition was that bad.
Dr Stein saw my old MRI and asked I take new ones, and I did. The new MRI was negative, the new x-​rays, also negative. He done a few test on my knee and realized something was wrong, there’s no way i’ll have issues straightening my leg if the test were negative.
He advised to scope the knee, there might be something irritating the pads behind the knee.
He did the arthroscopic and what he told me afterwards made a whole lot of sense.
My knee swelled because the collision was so hard that pieces of my kneecap chipped and was irritating the patella tendon. He removed the bone spurs and showed a picture of my knee with the slight crater/​hole. He suggested to try rehab before operating on the knee.
I did the rehab, my knee wasn’t getting better and I’m currently in bed typing this review. I just had my Denovo cartilage implant. During the operation, he found not just 1 hole but 2 that needed to be filled.
I hope to be pain free after 6 years and I have to be sentimental and say, Dr. Stein is as great doctor and that’s what you’re here looking for.

Dr Stein has preformed 3 operations on me and 2 this year alone and think I have been so very lucky to have had him for my surgeries, and his assistant Dana is just great. I would HIGHLY recommend him and have done so to friends with sports injures.

Dr. Stein has awful bedside manners, large ego and zero emphaty for his patients. In my case he misdiagnosed my shoulder condition due to a simple lack of care.
Here in New York we don’t have to settle for substandard medicine even if it is administered by a doctor with TV presence. It will not help you if he treats you for a wrong thing.
Please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere in the city. After all we have the best ortho hospital in the world right here in NYC.

I saw Dr. Stein on a friend’s recommendation after I tore my ACL, MCL, and meniscus. At my first visit, Dr. Stein did a couple push tests to get a first impression of what my injury might be, then immediately sent me in for an MRI. At each successive visit, both pre and post-​surgery, Dr. Stein and his PA, Dana, were exceptionally professional, efficient, and friendly. I’ve been seen on time or early at all but one appointment, and I’ve always felt like Dr. Stein and Dana were both happy to take the time to address any questions that I had.
Dr. Stein took the time to explain my treatment options (including forgoing surgery and simply going straight into PT) and their accompanying pros and cons. I opted for surgery, which went extremely well. I’ve known a number of other people with this injury, none of whom have had as smooth or quick a surgery and recovery process as I have. Each person’s body is different, so comparing one person’s injury to another can be problematic, but I’ve honestly been very impressed with how smooth my surgery and recovery processes have been with Dr. Stein.

Dr. Stein is a very competent doctor and did a great job fixing up my broken leg, surgery included. I think it’s safe to say that he earns your trust and keeps it.
That said, if you prefer a doctor with a bedside manner, Dr. Stein will more than likely leave you disappointed and slightly less comfortable than someone warmer might. When he first came out to the lobby to call me back to the examination room, I had 2 crutches and had taken off my heavy coat. I politely asked him if he could help me with my coat. He just stared at me. After an uncomfortable pause, his receptionist said, «I’ll get it,» and ran around the counter to get my coat.
When he told me that I was going to require surgery he did so rather indelicately, I felt. I mean, he did just tell me that I was going to go under, have an invasive procedure, and be on crutches for 4 weeks in the NYC winter. Certainly not something anyone WANTS to hear.
If you don’t mind these things and are merely looking for a doctor that does a great job and knows his stuff, I highly recommend Dr. Stein. I simply think a warmer personality makes a patient feel more comfortable.

We all know what it’s like to find a doctor in NYC. You might as well throw a ball in any direction and you’ll probably hit one. Of course, there’s always referrals from family or friends, but that sometimes doesn’t always work out.
I was in need of an orthopedic doctor and most people I know have no need for one. Through a combination of using my health care provider’s doctor listings and searching the web, I found Dr. Drew A. Stein. As his office is close to my workplace, I thought I’d give him a try.
I had already made an appointment with another doctor, but he wasn’t able to see me for two weeks! Thankfully, Dr. Stein’s office was able to make time for me in a few days.
I was also able to download the proper patient forms from his website, so I could walk in the door having all the paperwork ready to go, which means less sitting around in the waiting room. Once there, the staff was very polite and efficient.
Dr. Stein was very straightforward with his questions and the exam. Once I explained my problem, he knew exactly the cause and with a few simple tests, he was able to prescribe a treatment. I liked his no-​nonsense approach, and he was polite and friendly throughout.
I know it was my first visit, but I like the whole experience so much I just had to write about it! If you’re in need of an orthopedic/​sports medicine doctor, definitely give Dr. Stein a try.
