Father Demo Square

I love this area. I used to work close by. I love the close proximity to good food, historic sites, and the community atmosphere.
Today they were decorating for the holidays. It was rather cold and windy so I just passed through. People were still sitting and enjoying themselves.
In the summer is when you should visit to sit and relax. During the winter it just adds to the ambiance of the neighborhood.
Whether you live here or work in the neighborhood this is a great place to visit for peace and quiet.

Clean small park with beautiful water fountain in the center. There are also plenty of park benches for you to sit & just relax.

Nice place.
1) It is a free public space.
2) The fountain is nice.
3) The surrounding is also wonderful.

A wonderful place of peace in the midst of the chaos of NYC. A standard place for people to take a break or lunch. Since you are just down the street from Murry’s cheese it’s a great choice to sit for a snack. Small by just right.

Noise: Relaxing because the quite zone requirements, the fountain and there being plenty of park benches. If they had some low shrubbery along 6^th Ave and along Bleecker it may make it a little quieter but overall not bad.
Seating: The trees are low and provide plenty of shade but I recommend bringing a small cloth to clear pigeon poop from the benches, especially the ones under the trees.
Cleanliness: Other than the bird poop this place is pretty dang clean for being such a busy area.
Food/​Etc: Everything is only steps away.
Overall: Great place to relax and take in NY. I’m definitely a fan.

I’ve passed by Father Demo Square so many times on my way to somewhere. During spring and summer, you get tourists and locals, eating, chilling, listening to the piano player (who is horrible but rakes in buckets of cash because he is so lively and the tourists love him), and just plain hanging. I can credit this little park for three vivid memories during the times I’ve actually stopped and stayed a while–
The first time-​I had grabbed a slice at Joe’s, planted on a bench to eat when I heard the rustle and pitter patter of rodent feet. Many pitter patters and at that time just before dusk when you can see the little critters race under your feet. I upped and left. A one star experience.
The second time-​It was a sweltering day in July when I espied two little creatures, fallen out of the park, laying out on the side of the fence on the octagons. Were they baby squirrels? They were hairless, bald, with eyes closed and almost whimpering. One was the size of my little finger, the other 3 inches long and plumper. The poor creatures were baking in the 90 plus weather so I placed them back in the shade, watered them down and pondered their fate. My boyfriend at the time considered squirrels rats with tails. My kitty boy and girl would make snacks of them. My best friend however, had no pets… could I persuade her to take them in and foster them? As I thought I stared and stared… at naked tails. Oh, no, were the babies of that infamous NY species known as the grey RAT??? Wishing the babies a painless fate, I fled. Later my freaked out friend sent me countless links on how to recognize a baby squirrel. Not sure how many stars picking up baby rats with your fingers merits. Five stars if they perished painlessly.
The third time – NYC had yet another blizzard. Father Demo Square had been abandoned by people and native fauna. The third time was indeed a charm. The place was magical, covered all over with fluffy white snow. Like ghostly footprints from Robert Frost, there were traces of footprints covered over by the new snow cutting a path through the park. The fountain, long silenced, was beautiful against the backdrop of a grey sky and Avignone Pharmacy and Lady of Pompei Church, two longstanding Village fixtures. No sound nor movement broke the spell. It was finally mine. But this is NYC and the pigeons came back to their turf. And it was still a five star moment.
I will probably pass by Father Demo Square without stopping again for a while. It is too crowded, dirty, attracts too many strange people and homeless, and has too much vermin. But on another enchanted day, when everyone else has abandoned it, I will return.

Kleiner aber sehr gemütlicher Park in Greenwich Village. Wer sich beim Shopping Bummel oder nach dem Spaziergang durch das Village eine kleine Ruhepause gönnen will, ist in diesem Park sehr gut aufgehoben.
Direkt um den Park hat es zudem viele Restaurants.

Perfect spot for eating Joe’s Pizza or any of the great Bleecker St. spots for lunch or bakery treats. Since there isn’t a lot of room to eat at any of these spots, the square may be your best bet.
There is a serene fountain, but its best feature is the prime locale for people watching.
Watch out for pigeons and hipsters in close proximity — this spot is overwhelmed with both. This factor is preventing the square from getting a full five stars.

You’ve been walking for a few hours and your dogs are a little tired. After seeing a string of stores along Bleeker St., you are ready for a break. Suddenly like an oasis in the desert, there in a perfect patch of sunlight, you see it– a park bench with your name on it and it’s calling to you– beckoning you and telling you to relax and take a load off for a bit. Enjoy the sun on your face. People watch. Hold hands and smile. This little park is a perfect respite in a central spot. When in the area, go, and enjoy it!

Father Demo Square is an open public circular piazza in keeping the traditional town plans in Italy, where Father Antonio Demo originated.
A non-​working fountain inhabits this .072 acre public piazza space heavily plastered by pigeons with a sign inscribed «do not feed the pigeons.» There are many seats which are occupied by numerous vagrants since the 1970s. No skate boarding is permitted. Our Lady of Pompei Church is in the background which is authentic for an Italian piazza scene. Quaint with surrounding shrubberies in the West Village, which can be easily overlooked but serves as mediocre resting place to put the brakes on life to intake the day.

I always thought the surrounding areas of this square reminded me of Europe for some reason. With the church in the background and the small village stores and shops, this square is a great place to sit down for a while and people watch.

This is the place I go when waiting for people when we go to John’s pizzeria.

Ladies and gentlemen, I had a much-​needed «New York Moment» last weekend at Father Demo Square.
My boyfriend and I were strolling through my neighborhood, killing time before meeting up with friends at a bar. The air was crisp and perfectly breezy. We passed this park and he wanted to sit down. Now, I have lived around the corner from Father Demo Square for over a year. I walk by it on my way to and from the subway every day. But until that night, I had never once actually walked in and taken the time to enjoy it.
The park was buzzing with people but not necessarily crowded. Two men were playing songs together on their guitars. Another man and his two small daughters danced to the music. Tourists took pictures. Locals ate pizza slices. Couples cuddled. Pigeons strutted. Before I knew it, I had tears in my eyes. Everything was so perfectly ‘New York.’ I was completely at peace with the world and with myself in it. It could have gone on like that all night, but alas, in keeping with the frantic pace of city life, we had to move on and jump back into the urban flow.
But I’ll always have the memory of those perfect moments on that perfect night when all the world seemed to be aligned just for me.

A fascinating place to sit and watch the world go by. 6^th Av and Bleecker forever!

Last summer, the prettiest new park in New York City opened in Father Demo Square. The fountain was absolutely beautiful and the planting, benches, paving — really, everything was spot on.
Then, a few months later someone had the sad idea of taking this lovely fountain, encasing it in white plastic and putting really ugly LED lighting around the center risers. Even if this idea had worked, it would be ugly — but the icing on the cake is that it really doesn’t work. Half the lights burned out almost immediately and the plastic looks like it’s growing mold.
Obviously, the renovated square is better than it was before — but — it’s too bad that the centerpiece of what was really a perfect restoration has turned into an awful eyesore — day or night.
Fountains don’t need disco lighting. Soft, indirect lighting after sunset is the perfect way to go. Let the stonework and the water speak for themselves. Get rid of that hideous lighting and make the restoration perfect again.
This has been bugging me for months now — ahh, I feel so much better.

Sitting on a bench in Father Demo’s Square at dusk, enjoying a pineapple sorbet from nearby Cones on Bleeker street, basking in the glow of the lovely illuminated fountain as twilight passes by.. . this is the type of experience that makes living in this frantic, unforgiving metropolis a little more tolerable.

Quaint and relaxing. It’s nice to relax when your walking around the West Village. There’s not really anywhere to stop and relax. I like going here with some ice cream or a slice of pizza. The fountain is really nice and if you have an iPhone it looks great if you take a pic of it with your Hipstamatic. I took a couple.

I’m gonna be straight with you (NPI): I like it BERRY MUCH when girls sling their bags across their chests in the spring & summer. This makes me happy. It’s the little – er, medium or large – things that make your day. Father Demo Square is not merely a cool spot to chill but also a great place to revel in this newly-​busting-​at-​the-​seems trend. Father, I have sinned.

It used to be just a paved slab w/​homeless people and pigeons sitting around. Then it was a construction site for ever. Now it’s a pretty paved slab w/​a fountain & people with homes sitting around and pigeons. It’s very scenic now and a good no-​longer-​sketchy feeling place to meet before heading to one of the million things around it.

This square is flanked by 6^th Ave, Bleecker and Carmine Streets. Near Murray’s Cheese Shop, Joe’s Pizza, Amy’s Bread, Rocco’s Pastry and more. They closed the square down about two years ago to refurbish. It recently reopened and is such a great little park. It’s literally a triangle in the middle of this intersection, but it really looks great. There’s a beautiful little water fountain in the center and an abundance of park benches along the sides. I love coming here with a slice and a book. It doesn’t have a lot of shade yet, as the trees probably still need to grow in. But, it’s never crowded – and of course great for people watching!
