Here’s the deal. The prices are obscenely high compared to other stores around the city. You are better off purchasing online or at one of the other great options around town.
In addition, their customer service is absolutely dreadful. I walked into this store for the first time two days ago. I surveyed the store until I settled on two items because they did not carry a single specific item I was looking for.
After my purchase was made, I went home and realized I had made a mistake and I was going to purchase exactly what I wanted somewhere else online. Being as it was my first time in the store, I had no idea of their return policy. I was helped by 4 different people and not ONE person had informed me of the policy. The posted policy is lost in the mess of things on the counter and is incredibly easy to miss.
I went in the following day to discuss a solution. I approached Matt, a manager, and pleaded with him to accept that it was a first timers mistake and that given the circumstances, it should have been an excusable offense. He sat behind the counter with his arms crossed and wouldn’t even look at me while denying any possible resolve I proposed. He was impossibly rude and gave me condescending tone. I had politely asked him for the name of any other manager I can speak to, to which he replied «Well, my name is Matt.» He would not give me any avenue to reach anyone else. I kept my cool and asked another associate what the other manager’s name was and left the store. It’s truly embarrassing for Forbidden Planet to have a man like that represent the store in management.
Despite going back and forth in the phone with Jeff (the other store manager) about the facts, he did not budge and stated all he can do is give me store credit. The truth is that I had already spent enough time searching for the items I had purchased 2 days ago. I wasted more of my time commuting to the store the following day to ask for a return. There was not a single thing I wanted in that store and it is wrong to try to force me to buy something else when I don’t want anything. The proper thing to do was to offer a refund. Unfortunately, these people do not care about doing the right thing.
I’d rather shop somewhere honorable who makes the policy clearly known rather than hide behind technicalities and shrug at the customers expense. You’re better off going online or to one of the many other stores where they know how to treat their customers.

I love this place I accidentally stumbled in today with my son. They have a wide variety of… well…everything to please your inner nerd. Tons of comics, graphic novels, pop vinyls, toys, statues, shirts, glasses. If you love comics/​animé then you definitely need to check this place out!!!

Great place to get comics, action figures, graphic novels, toys, etc. Nerdy-​type of place but in a good way if you’re into that kind of stuff. They had some sailor moon figures I thought were pretty cool… Moon Prism Power…
They also sell a bunch of those POP figures– so if you’re looking for a particular one this is the place.
Located in union square it’s a good place to browse if you’re into this type of thing. Staff is friendly.

Very neat place for new comics. However I wish they had older comics books for collectors.

I really liked this place at first. After time though, I had bad experiences with poor customer service, dismissive help, and they have a horrible return policy. I bought a game and decided I didn’t want it the next day. I never took it out of it’s wrapper. I went to return it and they refused to give my money back and said they would only give me store credit. This wasn’t okay with me so I decided once I used my store credit, I’m not coming back here again. There have been people there who have been helpful but I felt that bad customer service overshadowed the good. This location is near the famous Strand bookstore and many other places to dine and shop so this is the main upside. Personally, I will give my business elsewhere, probably JHU because they’ve always been helpful and kind, but that’s just my two cents.

I can’t write a long review because it’s Christmas Eve. But I just went into Forbidden Planet at 4:30 (on Christmas Eve). The place was mobbed, of course. But the shelves were well-​stocked, I found the items I was looking for easily and the check-​out line was moving so fast that I was in and out of the store in 5 or 6 minutes. It was my easiest shopping experience all season. Imagine, a busy store in New York that’s set up for NO WAITING during the holidays. And the check-​out people were helpful, polite and even smiling!
They put their Weekly Planet flyer in my bag and, on the back, it says, «Looking for a last minute gift for that special someone in your with life with questionable taste?» In fact, it’s an ad for their DVD department, but it applies to other items. I needed some very funny Unemployed Philosopher’s mugs and they had every one that I needed.

Well I had no idea how many action figures and games there are and even more shocking was how many I knew that I didn’t know I was aware of. Mass media and pop culture sneaks up on you whether you like it or not and if ever in desire of gauging how up to date you are just peruse here for a bit. I felt quickly out of the loop. Something about no TV for years I guess…

My go to NYC comic shop. They don’t have as many deals as Midtown Comics offers, but the ease of access and curated content is second to none. Every Wednesday, I head straight to the back wall to pick out my comics for the week. Once in a blue moon I’ve encountered titles selling out, but they’re quick to restock by Friday at the latest.
The employees are very helpful if you’re looking for something in particular though they should know by now given how often I’m there that I’m probably fine on my own, haha. They offer free bags and boards for whatever floppies you buy which even if you’re not a big comic collector, you should grab.
One of the other reasons why I really like Forbidden Planet is that they’re clientele is very diverse. I never feel like the odd one out as a woman of color in a comics store. Location helps but I also think there’s something about the vibe of the store that’s more inclusive and easier to navigate than other shops I’ve been to. That’s not to say it doesn’t crowded in there because it definitely does but I wouldn’t go back so often if I didn’t feel totally comfortable there.

Paradise for graphical novels, manga, toys, etc. Where else can you find Asano, Jason, Johnson, Moore, Tomine, and so many others in just one location?

I don’t live nearby so I made a special trip to FP to buy some birthday presents for family members that are huge Sci-​Fi fans. I asked the guy at the door to show me which t-​shirts are for a show (since I don’t know those shows) and he literally got away from me as fast as he could. I called him back and asked again for specific help and he rattled off the model numbers so quickly I had no clue what he said. I really wanted to support FP and spend money there but his rudeness drove me away. Maybe one day he’ll find a job he likes but in the meanwhile, I’ll shop elsewhere.

Great place to find that special edition tie fighter figure /​model you were looking for.
This place is really neat just to walk around and look at everything.
They have a nice selection of toys, display models, comics (back dated ones and new) and other little knick knacks you need for you display shelf.
Just be careful though because it can get busy and crowded in there.

a well curated selection of graphic novels and books. good selection of floppies but you need to get there on wednesdays because many titles sell out. I really don’t care about toys but if you do, they appear to have a really good selection.
some people on staff have been very helpful and knowledgeable. others are pretty snide and outright unwilling to be of assistance, which begs the question, why are you working in retail if your sole function is to help customers?

Ya se que todo lo encuentras por internet, pero en este lugar déjate sorprender por algo que te encuentre a ti. Así mismo, mézclate con la extravagante fauna que deambula por ahí buscando lo mismo que tú. Desde una figurita hasta una taza pasando por el compilado de tu serie favorita. Si conoces la tienda de comics de The Big Bang Theory, multiplica la experiencia por 3 en este lugar. Es un must.

Forbidden Planet, I love you so! You get all the props for being open super late and being right next to Strand bookstore! Every time I go they have new items and the store is nice just to window shop with all the cool displays. There is always some impossibly expensive item that I would totally buy if I had money to burn! There are a few animé figures that are wayyyyy overpriced, but if your visiting NYC and you want to buy some cool toys and you can’t get to the other animé shops, then why not? It will be a great souvenir. They also have a great selection of art books.

Je né connaissais pas cette boutique et j’ai été enchantée! Pour vraiment l’apprécier, il faut être fan de Marvel, comics et science fiction. Vous trouverez des figurines (parfois grandeur nature!), des t-​shirts, des BD et toutes sortes de goodies.

Growing up with FP, this variation is very svelte. The helpful computer at the front door and the clearance rack feeds the impulse buyers and those that hate asking staff questions. The figurines are still awesome. The T shirts are classic. There has been an increase of action figures. The Magic the Gathering counter is a hotspot. Their counter person is a tournament juggernaut and very approachable. You have to talk up the sales force to really get a good grasp on what they like, for recommendations. If there is a book that they have ordered, and you request it, it can be there the next day. I have ordered a few this way. The store seems more of an art gallery pop store. That just may be the sign of the times. Shopping wise can be cheaper online, but the indie book signings try hard for balance.

The location has moved a few stores down since the last time I’ve visited. It’s a little smaller however, still an awesome version of an art/​collectors gallery.

I’m feeling very old, because I remember Forbidden Planet’s two previous locations. I’ve been going to Forbidden Planet since the late 1980s. I am glad that it has stayed in the same area (Broadway around 12^th Street) and not gone away, because I would feel truly lost if it were gone.
If you are into comics, sci-​fi, and fantasy, this is the place for you. Aside from a great collection of comic books, you can also purchase books, CDs, DVDs, and various collectibles.
Seriously, I don’t know what more to say about it.

Forbidden Planet is one of the most visually interesting comic shops in New York city. As an added bonus, there is a virtual guide around the mega store to the right of the entrance as soon as you get through the doors. Huge displays in the center of the store advertises all their amazing figures and toys. The entire rear of the shop is covered wall to walls with shirts, comics, and games. And as an added bonus, if you’re a lover of weird movies, Forbidden Planet has a nice selection of b-​movies on DVD and blueray.
Only downside is the price, as everything seems way more expensive then other figure, comic, or game stories. Forbidden Planet is much more for people who want a cool experience shopping or want to do all their nerd shopping under one roof.

Ya solo el hecho de pasar por la puerta y ver a ese enorme Terminator, a ET o las puertas con manijas en forma del escudo del Capitán América ya te hacen emocionar, ni hablar de todos lo demás tesoros que exponen en esa mágica vidriera.
Sí, este local tiene de todo: Desde cómics, libros, juguetes, muñecos, peluches, accesorios, remeras y todo tipo de merchandising sobre cine, series, dibujos animados, cómics y cultura pop en general. Posta que a pesar de no ser un local inmenso tienen bastante cosas.
Desde lo clásico hasta las últimas novedades, Forbidden Planet los volverá locos, ya sea que quieran lo último de Marvel o DC o adquirir los nuevos muñequitos made in Funko. En fin, es un gran local, de esos que si visitas New York y sos de palo van a ir mínimo más de una vez y se van a querer llevar de todo.

The Captain America shield door handles caught our eye before we saw Rocket in their window display with other larger statuettes. Friendly staff in a fairly large store. Primary focus on graphic books and figurines, including slightly boring Funko Pop! vinyls. Pop culture memorabilia alongside comic goods. We came across most of the graphic novels we’d ever read or considered starting. The t-​shirts mounted on the wall caught my eye, particularly the baby Groot and Joker/​Harley Quinn. Some board games, trading card packs, and motif jewelry as well. Definitely use the check-​in 10% discount… Amazon is cheaper on some publications, depending on your binding preference.

A comic book geeks heaven. Love anything comic, sci-​fi, fantasy related its properly here.

Q: where do the Avengers, Justice League, Bert and Ernie, Grumpy Cat, and icons of pop and geek culture hang out and not obliterate each other?
A: Forbidden Planet. A place celebrating the retail of outrageous nerdery.
PRO TIP #1: WEDNESDAYs is when new comic books drop. if you’re not into crowds and throwing dem ‘bowz. i’d shop here on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday can be menacing because of tourists of people who like to camp in the store and take pics.
pay attention to the front window display! cool items items of geekdom constantly rotate in. for example, the gigantic Iron Patriot bust is in there along with cross-​dressing E.T. (ET phone Lucky Chengs!). the doors have Cap’s shield split as pull handles… i know i know not exactly Stark Towers entrance from the movies, but still a cool touch.
when you walk in you may be asked to check your bag. it seems like this policy gets turned on and off. i never go in with a bag, just so i can get a Forbidden Planet recyclable bag if i buy anything.
front of store is dominated by a central island of glass display cases of high end collectibles and toys like a Winter Soldier statue or giant Iron Man in Hulk Buster armor from Bowen, Hot Toys, Kotobuki, etc. lots of $ 100/​$ 200/​& beyond man toys! there also a mix of more mass merchandise (cheaper) figures to the left wall and random nerd goods to the right. high above the displays on the left and right, pinned closed to the ceiling) are t-​shirts and hoodies with letter/​number codes. basically you go to the register tell them your size and they’ll bring up the t-​shirt from downstairs storage if they have it. and yes you can pop open the tshirt to size it out. you just can’t try it on bc there’s no change room – and ain’t no one trying see that in public! lol. most of these t-​shirts are Marvel, DC, and Star Wars characters and whatever flavor of the month character has a movie out or is popular.
PRO TIP #2: there are constantly t-​shirt deals/​sales. so keep your eyes peeled for signs in the store stating as such. most of the t’s are from Mad Engine or Trendz, i believe. so prices hold pretty steady year round.
as you push to the middle of the store there’s plush, toy, and more merch galore.
then last third of the store are aisle upon aisle displays of graphic novels & manga with the back wall of the store dominated by single issue comics from Marvel, DC, and Image to much smaller boutique publishers. in terms of graphic novels, FP has a great variety and selection of both mainstream and indie titles. if you’re looking to discover something new in superheroes, scifi, crime fiction/​pulpnoir, horror, etc. stop a store employee and ask. most of them are going to be super knowledgeable and be able to rec something compelling. the aisles are fairly spacious, but can get clogged up with people who stand and read (buy a book yo. this ain’t a library!).
PRO TIP #3: check the Forbidden Planet Facebook page… they tend to shout out what’s on sales and other deals.
the back wall is insane it stretches from one side of the store to nearly the other. this is where most of the recent single-​issue comics are displayed. so if you’re not ready to dip into a graphic novel you can pick up a comic book for a few bucks and get your quick read on. the store itself (i don’t think) carries old classic comics that are bagged and boarded. this store is more about the new modern reader who still reads in print, but isn’t necessarily about collecting for value in terms of comics. as these comics won’t hold much value since there’s no rarity for them at this point versus a first appearance of Spider-​Man, etc.
what i love about this store and why it’s generally my go-​to is the range of merch from toys to t-​shirts to comics. it’s also super clean. well lit. doesn’t smell. not cluttered. and the staff is generally helpful if they are not fraternizing with one and other.

PRO TIP #4: Comic Book Day (typically the first week of MAY) AND New York Comics Con (typically mid-​OCTOBER of any year) is a good time to visit the store because there are giveaways, signings, and other events at the store.

Really awesome store with some killer items. Laid out nicely, good variety, clean, quality purchases throughout, and am awesome place where up-​and-​coming and well-​established geeks/​dorks/​nerds/​awesome folk to commune.
My only qualm were the staff. They seemed to work very well together, but they were either dismissive or completely unaware/​dishelpful (only way to describe it).
The little guy walking the floor has the most stank energy about him, and spoke with some reserved though obvious attitude to the customers I watched him «help». The two guys behind the main register seemed to have a bromance going on… but they would look me and others in the eye, and not ask if they could be of help, or recommend anything to us. Two others had cool energies, the one really tall guy seeming to be helpful to customers, but they both just let us stand at the back register while they worked on something else, never telling us that they weren’t open.
Though MUCH is desired with the staffing, I’d still recommend the joint. It’s quite awesome.

So many neat things! If you like anything that has a decent sized fandom, you’ll enjoy this place. I found stuff from Harry Potter, Doctor Who, all the comic book super heroes, Big Bang Theory, and a ton of other goodness. Nerdyness to the max… which is just how I like it!,

Lohnt sich für Comics und Merchandising Produkte.
Gut sortierter Laden für Figuren & Comics, desweiteren kann man auch Pen & Paper Bücher, Animé, T-​Shirts (halt viel Merchandising) bekommen. Mittags in der Woche war der Laden knacken voll.
