Established in 1966.

Gary Null opened his first health food store in Manhattan’s Upper West Side in 1966. For nearly thirty years, his current store, Gary Null’s Uptown Whole Foods, has been New York’s premier market for only certified organic-​grown produce and a wide selection of gourmet natural and raw foods. The store serves more fresh organic juices each day than any other store in New York. Gary Null’s Uptown Whole Foods also offers free nutritional counseling by a staff of highly-​qualified dietitians and nutritionists.

They sell expired food all the time and then give you a hard time when you try to return it, as if you’re trying to pull one over on them. They are very lazy about checking their shelves.

This place is so-​so. Decent selection of «health foods» but very pricey. Just got to look out for sale items. Small section of prepared foods — also pricey.
Store is small and great if you live nearby but honestly nothing to travel from another part of town far.

The smoothie guys! There are two especially wonderful smoothie/​juice guys here. They are two of the most dedicated joyful people I’ve encountered in the service industry. I don’t know their names, but each looks Eastern (Asian?). They must be students. They have bright futures ahead. Delicious smoothies and they always remember your order. Otherwise, great selection of (however pricey) fresh and packaged food. The entire staff is dedicated and by NY standards quite nice.

I don’t believe there is a less expensive place to get an organic, freshly made Green juice in all of NYC. Also, from my experience shopping around Whole Foods, Trader Joes, etc., Gary Null’s also has the best prices for Jumbo organic certified humane eggs, and for organic, first-​cold pressed olive oil.
The juice bar is my favorate aspect of the store, and the organic sandwiches that are made every morning have been a huge benefit for my lunch break when I’m working in the area.
My only complaint is that they sell VitaminWater in this place, but I think of it as a statement of irony.

They have decent options, albeit overpriced, even for NYC standards (I once got a bunch of organic asparagus for $ 10). Also, I have bought expired snacks with the expiration year apparently forcefully erased so as to look like 2015 instead of 2013! And once while they advertised 20% off all purchases, I only received 10%off. If only I lived closer to the real Whole Foods!

I live nearby, and so out of desperation of a few organic items, I go to this place – approx. once every few months. I try to give them the benefit out my doubts, however I’m totally giving up.
The service here is nonexistent at best. They treat customers like cattle – not even a simple «hello» or «thank you.» And it’s not like they’re busy.
Their fruits and vegetables are always half ripe or half dead.
Be careful with the juices. They are not careful with their handling of clean and dirty items!
This place sucks! If you want whole foods, then go to the REAL Whole Foods (they deliver & customer service actually exists).

Not only do they pack so many items into their little store, but they also give you very reasonable prices. For example, they sell Kombucha cheaper than fairway by $.20, and cheaper than Zabars by more than a dollar. Their organic power juices are affordable and very tasty. They juice on the spot for your order, so you’re not getting anything old, like at Blossom Du Jour (not to knock them, I love their foods).
Additionally, the staff tends to be very nice and helpful. They have a sizeable produce selection, and the health product variety is hard to beat.

I love this store and am happy to support it instead of its big competitors, but I have to second what everyone says here about the prices (which I get) and indifferent service. Also, the juice bar is okay, but I just paid $ 8 for the most «meh» smoothie, ever. Great place to get a nutritious, organic lunchtime thing instead of the mostly fattening places around the neighborhood.

Gnarly like a ‘health food’ shop should be. The last two words in the name must be contentious these days, but they had Better Brittle, so the health nut that I am browsed the aisles of this type of joint for some sweets.

Yay to Garys pre-​made organic food and meals that aren’t loaded with horrible vegetable oils and PUFAS (I’m looking at you Canola Oil). Whole Foods doesn’t even make meals to go (or in their case) that are organic, AND their food is loaded with veg oils. Garys uses good olé olive oil. I will walk 10 blocks just for that alone. Wild Salmon, organic coconut rice, organic cooked veggies. I only wish the selection was bigger. And I’m happy to pay more for organic from a small business any day. I do wish they would highlight which of their organic produce is also local — double whammy of nutritious food happiness! Until then, they will supplement my green market visits.

It’s sad that random shoppers don’t understand that the prices here are not the same as corrupt, unsustainable, subsidized Wallmart prices nor is the quality.
Look at it this way, you’re not just buying organic produce here – in one of the wealthiest cities and highest rent in the world I might add; you’re supporting Gary Null’s important health outreach and activism, for example.
If you’d rather support the sometimes cheaper, often unethical, faux hippy Walmart known as Whole Foods Market instead, then bring your money to one of their chainstores and leave your less-​than-​five-​star slipshod review posted here as testimony to your vulgar attitude and ignorance.

It breaks my teeny heart to give Null’s 3 stars because their produce is always PERFECT (organic, fresh, washed, ginormous, delicious, plentiful, etc.), but seriously, dude? What is with these prices? They are like LOLable. Let’s pretend I wanted some perfect produce and, oh yeah, maybe some OJ. Trader Joe’s sells organic OJ for 2.99, Whole Foods sells for 3.99, Fairway sells for 5.99, and Gary Nulls 9.99. That OJ better give me abs of steel or something. Who can afford that? I usually treat myself to a few bushels of greens and call it a day.

Small little health store filled with all kinds of organic, raw, vegan and other special dietary needs products! I babysit for a family nearby and we always come in here. Even if we are not purchasing anything, just walking by they will give the kids free natural Lollipops! :)
Staff is mixed. Some are super friendly and others clearly are not cut out for the customer service industry.
Prices are mixed too. Some of it it’s way overpriced, other items are standard. It’s a good back up if you don’t have time to run down to trader joes or whole foods.

Been going to this place for the last 4 years when I’m spending time in the ‘hood. It’s clean, the staff is friendly enough and they have a decent selection of organic considering it’s not that big of a store. I’ve been in a bunch of other smaller corner grocery stores and they just don’t seem as convenient and well stocked at this one. You can’t go wrong with this joint.

I’m writing this review mostly for my husband.
He loves listening to Gary Null’s radio show.
We came here several times in order to fulfill my husband’s curiosity.
I ended up liking this place a lot and here’s why.

They have AWESOME handmade raw chocolates.
I think store staff makes them.
Although 2 times out of 7, I couldn’t get the chocolates. Either they were sold out or people didn’t make them.
I still dream about the raw chocolates…
To satisfy my raw chocolate cravings, I bought another raw chocolate there that was not made by the store staff. I can’t remember the name of it, but the stuff was horrible. Couldn’t finish one bite. I had to throw them away. It was sad. It was like throwing away my cash and my hope for a good chocolate.
Anyway, my husband still talks about it and we will be back there again. Hopefully I can get good store made raw chocolate then.

A decent little minimarket with a bunch of vegan and natural products in stock. Prices can be on the high side and the service is indifferent, but they really do have a good mix of items, some of which can be hard to find, like trace minerals.
Unless you live in the vicinity, I don’t really see a reason to go out of your way to shop here. You can get 75% of this stuff at Whole Foods at a better price.
And for what it’s worth, it really bugs me that this guy weaseled «Whole Foods» into the store name. If you Google whole foods and the zip, this store shows up first, not the legit store on 98th and Columbus. Jerks.
