Gibney Dance’s mission is to bring the power of movement and self-​expression where it would not otherwise exist through three interrelated fields of action — Center, Company, and Community Action. At the Center, we offer rehearsal space rental for non-​profit and commercial renters, professional-​level ballet classes, and community programs for dance artists.

History

Established in 1991.

Gibney Dance Company was founded in 1991 as a performing and social action dance company. Studio 5 – 2 at 890 Broadway became the Company’s artistic home. The Company presented avant-​garde dance works choreographed by Gina Gibney, expanding to include a Community Action project in 2000, in which Company dancers taught movement workshops to domestic violence survivors. In 2010, Gibney Dance Center began by expanding from Studio 5 – 2 into the rest of the fifth floor of 890 Broadway, ultimately comprising eight studios. Today, the Company, Community Action programs, and Center thrive as an exciting part of the New York City dance world.
