Goodfella’s Gramercy

Goodfellas has been closed for a couple of weeks.
Food was mediocre and during evenings the restaurant was empty most of the time.

I posted a tip that this location has closed and Unilocal keeps asking me to write a review so OK, here goes;
It is dark inside.
The place is padlocked and the security gates are down.
There is no food.
The service is non-​existent.
They don’t answer the phone.
I recommend not going here if you want to eat.

I came across this groupon deal & figured why not give it a try.
I stopped by on Saturday early evening we came in no problem being seated the place was quite.
It was a rainy day so no trouble being seated but for a Saturday it was pretty empty.
Once seated we started with a glass of the house white wine, not bad our choice for the night.
Appetizers we tried the Homemade Mozzarella & Carroza, this is deep fired mozzarella with Marinara sauce not bad very crispy good with the sauce & nice size to share.
Pizza we tried the Alla Vodka fresh mozzarella w cream sauce we left out the mushrooms w peas & diced prosciutto, nice thin pizza good taste peas are a bit odd but not bad good sauce.
Small place cozy, dimly light makes for a nice ambiance. The smell from the oven is delicious.
Good service our waiter was nice, food came out at a decent pace.
Prices are moderate even with out the groupon deal, we enjoyed our meal I wouldn’t mind coming back from time to time.

I ate from here recently was generally unimpressed. Not much more to say!
One star is for the spinach roll, one star is because I had too. The removal of the other three stars is for everything else.

Overpriced, although I understand why (real estate, «more upscale» pizzeria, etc) but the food is decent at best.
I’ve had their eggplant parm hero– paper thin slices of eggplant with too much breading. Had to remove the bread from one half and transfer the insides to the other so I can actually eat a real hero.
There’s a chalkboard for specials, the bar is another regular bar to flood the area, staff always seem lethargic and/​or bored.
Their menu says it’s been voted best pizza, I’d like to see who the runner ups in that contest were bc I’ve had better slices exactly one block north

If their delivery pizza tastes this good, I can’t imagine what it tastes like fresh.
Such a great selection of pizzas that all sounded amazing, but we settled on the pizza alla vodka and the clam pie. I was in heaven eating each and every bite. So good, so flavorful and just so perfect. Exactly what I wanted when I was craving pizza.
However, the pies are expensive. A «6 inch rectangle pie cost me $ 18…very pricey, but also very good. I wish these came round, not a huge fan of the rectangle and I also wish they were cheaper. Still, the pizza is good and definitely worth trying, but I definitely won’t be eating this on a weekly basis.

My boyfriend & I have ordered delivery from Goodfella’s Gramercy three times since we moved to the area. We decided to order delivery on the Monday the 22^nd before the holidays, figured it would be a treat to relax and take it easy since a lot of family cooking was approaching us…
We ordered two orders of sautéed spinach, an order of meatballs and the buffalo salad with chicken. I had two bites left of my sautéed spinach when I noticed a giant roach at the bottom of the dish. I immediately ran to the bathroom to vomit and got extremely upset that I actually consumed the entire dish before noticing something so horribly disgusting.
Since we only live half a block away, we didn’t bother opening the rest of our order and walked it back to Goodfella’s Gramercy. We spoke to a gentleman at he front desk who told us «this never happens here» and the typical response. We paid in cash and asked for a refund, considering I got stomach sick and returned the rest of our order, you’d think we would get our money back. No.
The man told us he is unable to give refunds because his manager just left the country for the holidays. He said that we could give our name & complaint and come back after the New Year to get our money back. Well, we did that. We just went this evening and got the same story! We had a $ 60+ order, that was thrown up and thrown away and we have not been given respectable customer service at all.
This establishment clearly has an unsanitary kitchen with roaches & SERVES food with bugs for take out! If they would have refunded us properly and respectably then I would never come forward with this issue. But since they have terrible customer service & a bug problem to boot, other diners should be warned.

I did not think it was possible to get bad pizza or pasta in NYC but it was. I ordered their special pizza and I swear the cheese on it was cheddar and strangely orange. Simply awful.
My husband ordered the lasagne which sounded good on a cold night but it came out as one big square brick that contained a couple of noodles a ton of dried meat (not sure what kind) and little to no sauce — it was just dry and bad.
While the waitress was most friendly and accommodating it was not enough to salvage a bad meal.

Horrible. We have ordered a take out pizza before and enjoyed their square pie that they make exclusively for take out but when we ordered tonight they had replaced the square pie with a very dry bland circular pizza that had no flavor or texture. In addition we paid $ 5 for onions and peppers and the toppings were almost non existent. There were barely 2 – 3 pieces of onion and pepper on each slice. The cheese and sauce have no flavor and the base is soggy and soft. Do yourself a favor and get pizza elsewhere.

Good service. Nice waffle fries. Sausage appetizer was good too. Pizza was nice but the crust was a little too thick. Maybe could’ve been more cheese too.
I forgot my server’s name, but he was a shaved head gentleman that was extremely cordial and accommodating.

I was craving some carb-​loaded goodness, so decided to stop by Goodfella’s in Gramercy to pick up food. Again, Goodfella’s – an unpretentious Italian restaurant with delicious food and friendly staff – delivered!
The last time I was here, I got the gnocci and waffle fries, which were both yummy. This time, I got the linguine with clams in white sauce (you can also choose the red sauce). The pasta was served with three pieces of warm baguette, which were perfect for dipping into the savory white wine sauce. When Goodfella’s says «with clams» in the menu, they MEAN it 100%. There was a bed of fresh clams on top of the perfectly cooked, al dante linguine. I feel like most restaurants cheat by serving tons of empty clam shells and making it look overloaded, but this pasta only had ~6 shells, and the rest were all clams. The sauce also worked perfectly with the pasta. Love this place!

Came in here on a diet for lunch, so I pulled off what would usually be a risky move and ordered the salmon. Not risky at all, the salmon was delicious and perfectly seasoned with garlic and peppercorn, while sitting on a bed of sautéed spinach that isn’t overdressed in olive oil.
Major props to the dude with the BK/​Staten Island accent who’s making the pizzas while waitering the 15+ customers in here WHILE managing pickups and deliveries without skipping a beat.

We went here for dinner after walking around the neighborhood looking for a place to eat. We were promptly seated. Daughter ordered the Stuffed Mushroom Tapas and thought it was good. Hubs ordered the Eggplant Parm Pizza and thought it was all right. I shared the Gnocchi Pomodoro with my daughter and we loved it. We both weren’t that hungry and this was the right portion. I also ordered Broccoli Rabe and got a side of spinach instead. We brought it up with the waiter but he said that was we ordered and we didn’t want to argue anymore. Overall, the food was ok and service was good.

This is heartbreaking… I really wanted to like or love this place. I have been searching for an Old School Italian Pizza Restaurant for the last two years. But this is not it…
My girlfriend and I had dinner here tonight.
Let me start with what they got right. Super friendly people on the phone, nice greeting when we got there. Great and amazing service all night, one waitress handling the whole place, but only about five tables working when we got there at 7:30. Great free bread. Water served immediately and refilled. We were warned that if we ordered pizza it would be a long wait, because of the take-​out orders, and it was very long, like 45 minutes, but that was alright since we were warned. Great coffee (warning Old School) and espresso.
What they got half-​right: The Garden Salad was very good, very fresh — but very very skimpy, with of all things the Iceberg lettuce. A table near us ordered the Caesar, and they clearly had twice the amount — which makes it a decent salad to share. The Eggplant Parm … they got the look right. But not the taste or the texture. It was tasteless…(which I think is a theme here), and was more like a veal than an eggplant. But my girlfriend liked it… but I am the eggplant parm expert and I swapped with her… because she hated the pizza.
So what did they get wrong… and got it very wrong… pizza. How on earth does a «Pizza» restaurant make pizza this bad? Girlfriend ordered the New York Style Pizza… low quality mozzarella, tasteless sauce all on a crust that was hard and crispy to the point of being way overcooked… and like another reviewer said…“dry”! And our pizza did not look like any of the ones pictured — ours was cooked way more.
But now the lowest point of the meal… a place from which no Italian restaurant can redeem itself. Horribly way overcooked pasta. I make pasta all the time at home for my three kids… and once or twice I have overcooked it… not this badly, but bad enough… my kids would never have eaten what was served tonight. Soft and mushy, melts in your mouth — but it is not supposed to.
This was categorically the second worse pasta dish I have ever had. It reminded me a lot of the worst one, that was in Iowa, one snowy night near the Army ammo plant near Burlington, in the late 1970s. Went into a place with a neon sign flashing, «ITALIAN FOOD» near the base. Ordered the «Spaghetti Special» and was given a bowl of overcooked linguine and a side of warm ketchup… not much different at Goodfellas.
Grew up eating just too many Italian meals in Little Italy and the Bronx, that overcooked pasta will never fly. And went to Junior High a block away at JHS 104, used to get amazing pizza on First near 21^st back then. Oh well… search continues.
I might return here someday, maybe the chef was tired.

My wife and I ordered the Chicken Francese (Dinner Entrée) and Philly Cheesesteak.
Having transplanted from Philly to NYC a few years back, we missed getting a cheesesteak. Bad move.
Sandwich was on very soft bread with not too much meat. In addition, the home made chips (with rosemary) were put into the same container. As a result, the chips were soft. In addition, the chips were really pieces of chips and very broken up an small.
In the future we will always look at Unilocal prior to ordering.
Chicken was good but for the price, should have come with side of pasta

I just had a wonderful dinner at Good Fellas. I found a groupon for the Gramercy location, so decided to buy it. I often use groupons & are greeted slightly less positive than a normal 100% paying customer– but at Good Fellas they were extremely nice, welcoming, and natural. (As a party of six, they were helpful to us– especially since we chose to share all of our food– ordering as we went.)
**The service was amazing & there was great food to match.**
I suggest the «Mushroom Madness» pizza, one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. Didn’t love the antipasti, but the rest of the food we ordered more than made up for it.
(we had two salads– the strawberry, the Cesar, another pizza: veggie delite, and a shrimp pasta dish.) Personally I ordered the cheesecake, and it was amazing,
Also– Wednesday there was a half priced wine bottle special, which we were lucky enough to also take part in.
I would definitely go back.

Very good food. Quick service. Friendly waitress. It wasn’t too busy but I can see this place filling up on a busy night. I got the smokin’ Goodfella pasta which was good but my friend got the lasagna an it was very good. It was made with sausage that is used for pizza. I didn’t get an opportunity to try the pizza but I heard good things. I had a reservation through Opentable an our table for 6 was waiting for us when we arrived.
I would recommend Goodfellas Gramercy & I plan on returning.

Just ordered the following and this is how I rate it.
Caesar salad– salad was fresh and very good
Buffalo wings– can’t mess these up
Chicken parm hero– served with soggy bread, terrible display of a chicken if it ever was a chicken and fries were soggy as well.
Lasagna– at first glance very well out together… You can tell this lasagna was sitting waiting for this order before I placed it.
Waffle fries with mozzarella– soggy
Over all bad experience for the 60 bucks I paid.
I guess you shouldn’t expect much… It’s a pizza place… And I ordered everything but a pizza.

Goodfellas has a talent in making great topping combinations on their pizzas. This location in Gramercy is a bit cramped compared to the lower east side location but quality is about the same. If you are lucky, you get the waiter with the photographic memory. After reading out our order only one time, he was able to say it back to us in the same order. Not to mention how funny he was and dropped wise cracks on us when he heard something odd in our conversations.
As for the food:
Mussels Marinara ($ 10.00) — This appetizer is one those examples where it looks bigger on camera. There are about 12 – 14 mussels on the dish. Each tasted great and the marinara sauce with the garlic slices was amazing. (7.5÷10)
Sampler Platter ($ 14.00) — An assortment of your typical fried appetizers such as mozzarella carrozza, buffalo wings, garlic bread, fried ravioli, and chicken fingers. Good for groups but nothing special that you haven’t tried before. (6.5÷10)
Mushroom Madness Pizza ($ 12.00) — The small pizzas here are enough to feed 2 – 3 people. One of the safe choices is the mushroom pizza. Covered with an assortment of mushrooms and cheese, it had a nice mild flavor. (⁷⁄₁₀)
Smokin’ Goodfella’s Pizza ($ 12.00) — Their most famous pizza and my favorite here. It is always a must order. The aroma alone from the smoked mozzarella and roasted peppers is enough to get your tongue salivating. (⁸⁄₁₀)
Buffalo Calamari Pizza ($ 12.00) — Odd combination and the only pizza I didn’t like. The sourness of the buffalo sauce and the chewiness from the calamari didn’t go together. (⁶⁄₁₀)
Linguine and Baby Clams Pasta ($ 17.00) — I recommend this pasta with white wine sauce instead of red. There is a generous amount of baby clams and you can’t go wrong with garlic and white white together. (⁸⁄₁₀)
Chicken Goodfella’s Pasta ($ 16.00) — This pasta has a similar taste to the pasta above. The penne is covered with a white wine, garlic, cream sauce accompanied with little bites of chicken meat. (⁷⁄₁₀)
The food is solid but the service and our waiter’s friendly attitude made the meal better.

Happy to completely trash my old review now that these guys are up-​to-​snuff! Long story short, I’ve been a big fan of Goodfellas LES. When I moved to Gramercy, I was really bummed to not be able to order from my favorite pizza joint. Low & behold, Goodfellas Gramercy opened!
My first experience was abysmal, and I wrote up a review about it. [Disclaimer] They contacted me a couple months after the fact, and asked if they could rectify it by sending me a fresh pie.
Since then, me and my friends have probably ordered another six pies, including over Superbowl Sunday, and I’m happy to report that they’ve been just as great as I was used to from Goodfellas LES. All in all, thrilled they opened nearby, and that they’ve worked out their kinks! Big thanks for going the extra mile with your customer service, guys!
