I have been going to Martin for haircuts for almost 4 years now. He was actually the first person to cut my hair in the city and has been the only person that I have gone to since. It’s hard to find someone to trust with your hair but his attention to detail is clearly evident in his work. I personally love that he is extremely flexible with his schedule. I have a difficult time planning appointments weeks in advance because of work. Therefore, it’s really great knowing that he will try to accommodate me even if it is last minute.
I highly recommend checking out his new space if you are downtown and looking for a quality cut/​style, he’s the best.

A haircut to perfection whenever I meet with Martin! I’ve lived in NYC all my life so I’ve had my fair share of barbers, from Washington Heights to lower Manhattan, and Martin is far and away the best of the best! He listens to what you want with no judgement or preconceived idea of what style is right or wrong for you. But, he also suggests things and gives his professional opinion on what he would recommend doing; shorter on the sides, longer on the top, etc. His new shop is really hip and welcoming where you don’t have to feel intimidated if you’re getting a cut for the first time as a new customer.

YES indeed it is. My hair is an extremely important part of my life and as my partner disliked my prior stylist although she was very good I had to move on… To where that’s great and not a $ 400 haircut. So to Unilocal I went and found this gem. Skeptical of not one less than 5 star review yet secretly encouraged. Backing the underdog so to speak although I could be staring a race horse in the face. You get what you pay for they say. I called and made a reservation. 3−11pm huh?(interesting hours. Smart man in my opinion.) I mean what person who works actually has time for a haircut in NYC during business hours. Very smart indeed. I climb four stories past a parlor of ill repute considering backing out. I sat on a couch waiting for a customer to finish up… Listening to him chatting away to Martin as best friends would. Every time Martin asked if he would like to see the back or sides he would say no Martin, come on man I trust you. You’re the best. Yet he would continue to offer. Courteous friendly and kind. A humble perfectionist. Now it was my turn. Nervously j took the stand showed Martin a picture of what I thought I would like and then gave him carte Blanche. The kind of carte Blanche given with a death threat at the end lol. Well I watched him work and it inspired me. The man is a genius. Let me now bore you with the details but to say the previous gent who said ‘come on man I trust you’ was entirely correct to do so.
I left with the best haircut of my life.
A self proclaimed perfectionist and ex old school graphic designer. A Mexican lover of tequila with a real story of life and living it.
More importantly he is now my only hair stylist and I’m hoping he will stay in the financial district. I would follow him anywhere just about.
$ 45 for a haircut worth $ 400.
Martin you are indeed worth every star on the board and more.

This is either my first review ever, or the first in so many years I don’t remember the last one, but I am on here specifically for Martin.
Martin is the best! I went to him because he was near my office and open late, with many positive reviews, and I had really long hair I couldn’t just trust anyone with. After 2 years of searching around NYC I still hadn’t found anyone I really liked. Martin killed it, and I had decided there was no one else I could go to to manage my long hair.
Tragically I found out within a week of that haircut that i need to cut my hair short for a job interview. I went back to Martin who AGAIN did an excellent job getting my hair down to a professional but still trendy look, and charging me less than usual since I’d just been to him the week before.
Excellent cuts, excellent style, excellent attention to detail, excellent environment, excellent experience. Literally won’t let anyone else touch my hair as long as he and I are both in this city.
PS — I got the job in the end, and the haircut was a perfect opener since the person interviewing me had just seen me the day before with my shag.

Martin has been the go-​to guy for my last three cuts because he’s a master of his craft and an amazing person. New York abounds in barbershops run by amateurs and hair stylists that couldn’t compete with a poorly managed McDonald’s when it comes to customer service. Haircules gets a 5 Star Review because Martin is the very antithesis of all that. If you don’t go here please let me know where else you can still find a one-​chair barbershop where you and your hair are guaranteed to get the undivided attention of a professional for however long it’s going to take to get every detail just right. To cap it all off Haircules has the best Opening Hours you could ask for and the value/​price relation is phenomenal. Absolute superstar.

Martin is the best stylist in NYC — kind, generous with his time, a perfectionist, and not only is he a master at giving a perfect hair cut, but he takes the time to get to know you and then style a look for you that fits who you are and what you want to look like. He is humble enough to cut to order — ‘can you please make it look like this picture’ and creative enough to provide his own style and cut — ‘I need a change’.
Martin has been styling my husband’s hair for over a year. He also provides my son, aged 9, with a cut practical enough for a kid’s parent (keep it out of his eyes please) and cool enough for the kid. My son will gladly sit in Martin’s chair, have a chat, and get his hair cut anytime. Most recently he left saying, «I just feel like a teenager».
I decided I wanted a change and talked with Martin following my son’s recent hair cut. He took the time to discuss what I was thinking, look at some pictures and then sent me away to give my hair a little more time to grow to the style I was aiming for. A month later I returned and Martin cut over 14 inches off. But here is what makes him even more special. When I mentioned I was thinking of donating my hair to ‘Locks of Love’ he took nearly an hour to tie my hair into mini pony tails so that he could maximize the length that he could cut off and send to the charity.
Following that he cut and created an entirely new look for me, talking me through the different ways I could style it before I left that night. Since then nearly every day someone comments on what a great and unique look I have — people I know and strangers. One of the nicest compliments I got was — «Isn’t it great when someone gets a new hair cut and you can see the personality in the new style that you knew they always had.»
Now I know I am gushing… but I think when you find someone like Martin, you do need to gush.

I recently moved to the city and needed to find someone new to cut my hair. I saw the great reviews Martin got on Unilocal and decided to give him a try and he did not disappoint. One word to describe Martin is AWESOME! It’s been well over two years that my husband and I have been going to see Martin for our haircuts. I feel like I was in a never-​ending search for someone great to cut my hair. That search ended when I found Martin on Unilocal.As luck would have it, Martin’s Haricules was right across the street from my apartment. Alas, he’s moved, but I’ll be heading down to Nassau street monthly for my cuts. Martin is an all around awesome person and is available at night so I tend to schedule my haircuts at 8 or 9 PM after work. I highly recommend Martin. You’ll have great conversations while getting great haircuts.

Until Haircules, I’ve never been satisfied with my haircuts in NY. Martin takes the time to get to know your hair and cuts your hair how it wants to be cut! 6 years in NYC, and I never found a hairstylist… until I met Martin. His place is the epitome of downtown trendy and chic. I’m scared too many people will go to him and he won’t have time for me after this review, but he deserves my praise. I got my hair cut tonight, and he knew exactly what to do with it. I wanted trendy and edgy, and I got a style I never even thought of. I chopped off 6 inches here once, and I also got color for the very first time. He has always pushed me to look different and edgy. I applaud you!
I have thick asian hair and one time a hairdresser told me I was ruining his shears. My hair is difficult and wild. Martin did a fantastic job not only on cuts for the past few years but also color! I had never colored my hair in my life but I trusted him to do his magic. I came out with an amazing ombré that the VP of my dept at work complimented me in the elevator. Really, if you have thick, unmanageable hair that has been ruined by other salons… come here and he will make you look amazing!

Here is the full story.
I’ve been thinking about cutting my hair for a while now. I loved it but it was so long it was a pain in the butt sometimes and a lot of work, too. But still I couldn’t let go. Then I saw a post on FB from the organization «Wigs for kids». And then I knew what to do… Get rid of my hair and help a kid who needs it more.
Since the organization has its base in Ohio I thought it would be a good idea to get my hair done while being in the U.S.
Next step… I had to look for a salon that has a good reputation and matches my sightseeing schedule while being in NYC.
And thanks to Unilocal I found the right spot… Haircules!
After checking some other places, I found Martin and his neat little place. His reviews were awesome and his opening hours perfect. So I sent him a message to ask if he has time for me and would be willing to help me with my mission. He did!
And then the big day came along. That was the first time I went to a hairdresser at 10pm! Crazy! But obviously Martin prefers offering the opening hours his clients want/​need and not the hours everyone else is offering. Big plus!
From the first moment I stepped into his unique salon, I felt very welcome and talking to him was as if we’ve known for ages. He offered me and my friend drinks (Some Whiskey to calm my nerves) while we were talking about my plan and wishes. Next thing I was sitting in his magic chair and he prepared my hair for the donation part. Six ponytails — the longest was about 20inch! Ahhh! But I trusted Martin every single minute. After he cut off the pony tails the real work began. With not much hair left, he had to find the right cut for me. And he did!
When he was finally done I couldn’t believe it! A whole new person looked at me in the mirror! AWESOME!
Thanks again Martin for doing a fantastic job! I never got so many compliments for my hair.

P. S. I was actually one of the last clients in his old location at Franklin Street. But don’t worry. His new place at Nassau St. is even bigger and better!

I love Martin! He’s been doing my hair for several years now and I keep coming back! He has become a true friend of mine, and I always love my once-​a-​month appointment :) He’s skilled in men’s and women’s hair — I’m a lady with short-​short hair and Martin is able to give me the pretty/​masculine hair I want! Definitely definitely recommend him.

Martin is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I got a recommendation from my girlfriend to get a cut from him and I’ve been coming back ever since. He is super talented at what he does and it’s obvious as soon as you sit down.
My hair is almost waist long and difficult to manage. Somehow Martin makes my hair fun with a lot of textures and volume. He does a phenomenal job of explaining what he recommends and why. He explains all the products he uses and even asks how you style your hair at home so it’s easier once you leave the salon!!!
I used his services for my sister’s wedding. My sister is extremely particular about her hair and never changes her stylist. Since her wedding was in NY and she lives in Seattle Martin cut, dyed, and styled her hair. She loved it! It’s so refreshing to be able to trust your hair in someones hands, and you can certainly do that with Martin. I am at the point where I wouldn’t let anyone else touch my hair except him.

I’ve tried going to A LOT of different places to cut my hair through the years and I honestly was never 100% satisfied with my haircut. I always had a vision of what I wanted and it never happened. I was bored with my usually bun & decided to once again attempt to get it cut. I was on Unilocal and found the page for Martin’s old location on Franklin, which was near my job, so I decided to give him a try. I fell in love! My hair was exactly what I wanted. It was a drastic change from my long golden locks to shaving most of my head but I walked out with a big ol’ smile because I had the kick ass haircut I had been waiting for.
When I first walked in and told Martin was I was looking for, he was excited to make it happen for me. When he was shaving the sides of my head he started with a longer length and then went down and down until I was happy. He didn’t want to just jump in and shave it all and make me walk out unhappy so he went slowly and took care of my precious head ;)
He is such a perfectionist, there isn’t a hair out of place when you leave him and everyone is always impressed with how good my haircut is.
Besides getting the greatest haircut you’ll ever get at a very reasonable price, you feel like you’re talking to an old friend when you are in the chair. Martin remembers everything you told him from your last haircut and talking to him is just easy. His place always feels warm and inviting. He has good music going & shots ready on deck for you! Martin is funny & caring & honestly just the greatest hairdresser out there. He makes you feel so good about yourself and you always walk out feeling & looking great!
