Hale Organic Salon

I miss Hale so much! I’m late in writing this review, mainly because I’m in denial that I’ve moved away from NYC and now need to find a new salon… Dale and Mariko were my dream team. Dale gave me beautiful color every time (combination of highlights and a few lowlights to give my mousy brown natural color some pizzazz) and Mariko always gave me a really great cut. They are not only true professionals who know their stuff, but also just nice people– I had fun chatting with both of them every time I went. I also loved the natural products the salon uses and the way there is no chemical smell. Just an open, airy space full of plants. Very peaceful. I highly recommend a visit!

I went to Hale in order to try out organic color. I have used a non-​organic hair salon for my services for over 20 years but wanted to try a more healthful alternative. Before I went to Hale, my colored hair was lustrous. Very healthy-​shiny and silky. Stylists always remarked how thick and lustrous my hair was. I had a color process at Hale for my light brown hair, which is naturally quite gray. I told the stylist (very pleasant and sweet) I wanted my hair color light brown (a bit lighter than it had previously been colored) with highlights to correct a darkness on the longer layers underneath. After coloring, highlighting and a blow out, I noticed my previously thick, healthy hair felt very fine and fly away — but I thought maybe that was just because of the way my hair was blown out. Upon walking outside, my husband remarked my hair looked copper colored. Ugh. Red tinted hair is not becoming for my complexion. My heart sank when I looked at my hair in natural light. Plus it looked so dry and limp and thin (I naturally have a «curtain» of very thick, wavy lustrous hair). I washed my hair a few days later and couldn’t believe how ropey and coarse my hair felt when wet. Ugh. I had to bring out a super conditioner I hadn’t used for years (Kerastase-​great stuff).
I contacted the stylist who was very sweet and apologetic. She said I could come in and she would try to correct whatever I was not happy with. She said the reddish copper color tint could have been due to a reaction with my previous color, which she said can make the resulting color unpredictable! I wish I had known that before-​I may have hesitated to have my hair colored this way. The stylist contacted me again and said I could come in during a certain short window of time to have her take a look at my hair and decide how to correct the reddish tint. Meanwhile, I went to my girlfriends’ upscale salon on the UWS and spoke to her trusted longtime colorist and asked him how I could get rid of the reddish tint. He said the only way at this point (other than, I guess, going darker which I do not want), would be to highlight the area to actually remove the red. This being said, I realized that any more highlights done at Hale (the underneath ones really dried out my hair), would result in all my hair being totally dried out. I could not bring myself to contact the Hale colorist again, as the experience was totally disappointing.
As much as I like the idea of organic color, I guess I’ll have to focus on other ways to make my body more healthful. Totally disappointing experience!

I waited for a couple of weeks before writing a review as I wanted to see how my hair would react to the colouring process. The products used are amazing and my hair feels really smooth and soft even after a few washes.
I had colour with Sydney who is absolutely wonderful! She listened to how I wanted my hair to look like and also took the time to see pictures of previous hairstyles. The result was exactly like she described and my colour looks totally natural like I wanted.
Mariko cut my hair and again the experience was great! I previously had my hair cut in a short bob and I am now trying to grow it, and Mariko was very careful to cut it in a way that compliments my facial features. Mostly, she explained to me what steps to follow next and how to maintain the length without taking much off.
Simply put, I’ve had one of the most relaxing experiences ever. The salon is beautifully decorated and everyone was super attentive, friendly and professional. Because I’ve used other shampoos/​colouring products before that were damaging to my hair I was initially cautious, but both Sydney and Mariko went out of their way to walk me through their techniques.
If you are considering visiting the salon just do yourself a favour and book an appointment now! The owner was also wonderful and seemed to be very knowledgeable and the staff take their time to see what works best with your hair quality and facial features. I cannot wait to go back there in a month or so!

I chose to go to Hale because of the excellent comments on Unilocal and the use of «natural» products. I have curly hair and there are difficult to handle, but Julia did an amazing job ! I have never been so happy with a hair cut, and she gave me great advice to take care of my curls. Julia is great, and we had a very interesting conversation. The experience was amazing, congratulations !

Hale is the best salon. Joe (the owner) has cut my hair for a decade, I followed him to several places before he opened Hale and I still come down from Boston to have him cut my hair after leaving NYC 4 years ago!
It is a beautiful space and the service is great. The products are clean, too, which is very important to me. Place does not smell like a salon.

If you want a STUNNING haircut, Mariko is your woman!!! I have gotten two haircuts from her now and I keep going back because she nails it every time. I had long hair. I decided to begin anew and go for a bob. It’s ridiculous how happy I am with her cut. She is a total winner!

It was my 2d time to the Hale salon and the experience with A.J. was amazing this time. She is a very nice person patient and professional worker. I liked how she picked out the color for my roots without orangey tone. My hair looked shinny and healthy after A.J. rinsed them with the apple cider vinegar mixed with water. I also loved all the organic products she used. The shampoo with mint felt and smelt so good on my hair. As far as The price is reasonable. I look forward to going back there .
Highly recommend it for pregnant ladies and people who want to treat themselves nicely.

I did a lot of research before getting my hair done for the first time in nyc, and I’m glad I did! I settled on Hale, and it was a pretty good experience! My stylist, Joe, seemed seasoned and that he knew what he was doing. I’ve been having trouble getting my hair to the right color. After bleaching it twice about 2 and a half years ago. Joe knew what kind of dye to use, and gave me some tips about how to wash my hair to prevent breakage and promote growth and to get my hair back to how it was before bleaching. It’s visually a super cool salon, has nice people working there, and it feels good to know you’re not putting tons of potentially harmful chemicals that close to your brain. The only reason I’m not giving the, 5 stars is because the cut I got after my single process dye wasn’t that great. Pretty boring, and although I did want it to be simple, it ended up being a little weirdly layered. But nothing crazy, and I didn’t give much instruction for the cut anyway. It also ended up being cheaper than I was expecting, so that’s always a nice surprise! I’ll probably go back for my next cut or dye!

I don’t understand why New Yorkers brag about coming «all the way to Portland, Maine» to get their hair done, when some of the best stylists are right here in NYC. I am so thankful I found Mariko at Hale Salon in TriBeCa. I’m visiting my son in TriBeCa so I googled salons. When the receptionist informed me that the salon uses John Masters products, I was sold. From the moment I walked in, I was treated as if I were the the most important person on the planet. Thank you Josepha:) the tea was wonderful (and so are you). Mariko is attentive, confident, and creative. She cut my curly hair which had a terrible triangular frizzy look, and she gave me a fab new look.

I went to Hale for hair styling with Mariko. It was my first time ever and I was beyond pleased. It was for a black tie event featuring Lady Gaga. I was going for a rock and roll 70s vibe and she knocked it out of the park. Even Lady Gaga and Gov. Andrew Cuomo thought so! (If a pop star and a politician think you’ve got great hair I’d say that qualifies as a slam dunk.) Lady Gaga said verbatim that my dress and my hair were, «super fierce and kick ass.» My hair stayed put all night and the rest of the attendees at the event also kept complimenting me on my hair. The salon itself is gorgeous and serene, with a smart industrial touch. I really appreciate their commitment to chemical free products and clean air as that’s something I prioritize on my own. The staff also couldn’t be kinder. I can’t wait to head back in a couple of months for my next hair cut. Thanks to everyone for such a great initial experience!

I first chose Hale Organic because I wanted to find a salon that made eco-​friendly choices. Then I met Mariko and she is absolutely amazing! I had an American wedding and an Indian wedding, and Mariko did my hair and makeup for both. She listened carefully to what I was looking for and also gave me great advice. She is incredibly knowledgeable and professional. My makeup was flawless and somehow she managed to keep my insanely straight hair curly for the entire night! I felt so special and beautiful at both of my weddings because of Mariko’s amazing job!

I simply loved it!

She understands your face structure and gives the best relaxing massages while washing your hair.

Mariko at Hale Organic Salon cuts my hair always perfect. She is very knowledgeable and does a great job. I can highly recommend her.

I usually don’t write reviews about Salons, but the haircut I got yesterday at Organic Hale is the best I had in a very long time. The person at the front desk was very nice and introduced me Mariko the hair stylist. From the moment she started talking about options for my look, i could notice that she was very professional, she checked carefully my hair and gave me few advice. When Mariko started to chop my hair, I noticed that she was very skilled, experienced and very accurate… no need to say that the final result was great. Very well executed and even if a man haircut might be easier than a woman’s one, I could say that Mariko at the Hale Organic Salon was way above the average hair stylists I had in NY in a long time. I come from Italy and there it’s another story ;)
I also got a very relaxing massage when Mariko washed my hair.
I definitely recommend this Salon and Mariko!

I would never go anywhere else. I searched quite thoroughly for an organic salon in NYC and once I found Hale, I never looked back.
My hair has never looked better! Shiny and healthier than ever! I can’t believe what a difference using clean, organic products makes on my hair. Because my hair is so much healthier now, it requires less upkeep — I get haircuts & color less frequently. Prior to this I was going to a fancy salon in the meatpacking, spending more money and damaging my hair with toxic products. Hale is not only better for my hair, but their prices are relatively reasonable.
Joe is the owner and my absolute favorite. He’s wonderful and I never have to worry, he knows what to do with my hair, offers great suggestions. If I say ‘let’s just cut half an inch”, he does just that (unlike some stylists who are scissor happy).
He loves what he does and it shows. I get so many compliments on my cut and highlights!
The salon has a warm & inviting atmosphere, with its beautiful open space and brick walls. Everyone is pleasant.
I cannot recommend enough.

In short, this is absolutely the best salon I have ever been to.
I generally don’t like leaving reviews after going to a place just once. But.
I’m so excited to have found this place! And I’m so so SO happy with the result.
I came in w a photo of what I was hoping for, expecting maybe half a semblance to the desired outcome.
Boy was I wrong!
My cut and color were spot on to what I had asked for!
I’ve never in all my years been so happy after a hair appt.
I’m really looking forward to making this salon my go-​to. I think we have a good future in front of us :)

I went with Hale Organic Spa because they use Organic Color Systems dye, which is amonia-​free, and the safest hair dye on the market, including overseas.
I was randomly given a hair appointment with the lovely and sweet, Sydney. She chopped my long hippie hair taking it from long and unhealthy, to shoulder length with volume. She dyed my virgin hair, doing a full highlight process. For some reason my hair had a hard time taking the dye my first visit, but I went back a few days later and really left it in for much longer. Sydney was able to make my dark blonde natural hair color to a sunkissed look all over. Still very natural. It looks amazing can’t believe it’s taken me this long to dye my hair, but have been worried about chemicals.
The salon itself is beautiful, very quiet on Tuesdays, if you prefer a quiet vibe. I highly recommend this place. Not only do they use all organic products, but they source their energy from wind farms. Overall, a great eco-​salon! :)

Booked with Sydney during my NYC holiday and couldn’t be happier. Sydney helped me find a look that fits me and is easy to replicate on my own. She was able to understand what I wanted in spite of my indecision. She did a great job with my color; I’ve gotten tons of compliments & I love it!
The bonus: the salon is completely organic! No nasty chemicals to breathe in or get in your hair and skin. It’s good to have a healthy option that works. I was nervous that the color wouldn’t last as long as the chemical alternatives; I’ve been pleasantly surprised. It actually seems to hold up better and longer.
This is my 2^nd time at Hale and it’s great.
The décor is beautiful; simple, modern and clean. The people are welcoming and friendly. It’s so peaceful, an oasis of calm in a busy city! This will be a regular stop during my visits to NY.

This was my first time at Hale and I have to say, I really like this salon. It is conveniently located in Tribeca, near my West Village office so I didn’t have to travel very far. They offer all organic hair care products which is very high on my list since I do not like to put chemicals in my body. The front desk was very friendly and I did not feel intimidated like some salons can make you feel when its your first time there.
The main reason for my visit was to get my hair colored and cut by the stylist Donna Malatino. Donna is a West Coast based stylist who frequently comes to NYC every 4 — 5 weeks to cater to her NY based clients. Hale Salon is the best place to get an appointment with her since she is always in high demand. Donna made me feel relaxed and comfortable as she walked me thru our initial consultation. She took the time to explain the products she would be using on my hair. Note– I have not had my hair colored since late 2012. I felt confident enough to let her do her magic.
I am very pleased and would highly recommend Donna. The cut was expertly executed and the color very natural looking. If you have the opportunity to get an appointment with her, I suggest you call Hale Salon and book now. I intend on doing the same.

Well, I gave this salon 3 stars for trying to be green and all. I visited this salon a total of four times, and wanted to like it so badly because there are not many choices for organic hair salons still.
The first time I came in I saw Christian based on these great Unilocal reviews. I wanted to go brunette. I ended up dark, but also very, very red. I didn’t feel like he fully went over how difficult it would be to go back to blonde.
A few months later I come back to the salon to try go lighter, and this time I see the owner, Joe. I get blonde highlights that look fairly tacky and remind me of growing up in New Jersey. I make another appointment a few weeks later to get more highlights in an attempt to even out the dramatic blonde at the top of my hair and the super dark bottom of my hair. It was like a reverse ombré, and not in any good way. Joe tells me that the reason my hair is like this is just because it’s so difficult to deal with hair that’s been dyed. I don’t know. I came home from the salon again unhappy.
I give Joe and the salon credit in that when I came back a few days later they didn’t charge me to attempt to fix it again. That was nice, but overall I still didn’t feel good about my hair. Another two months later, I went to a small, random salon on the UES with great Unilocal reviews and was able to finally get all of the warmth out of my hair and make me happy again.
Pros: Organic. Beautiful space. Close to 1 train. Good appt availability.

Other than not actually liking the hair color…
They have Scott toilet paper! Gross. Who uses that? I can forgive shoddy TP if it is like super recycled, but what is the point of Scott? It’s just cheap and shows a complete lack of respect for customers that pay several hundred dollars for services, not a few bucks for coffee.
