History
Established in 1990.
In 1880, the Association for the Relief of Respectable Aged Indigent Females purchased land on Amsterdam Avenue from 103rd to 104th Street. The building remained a home for elderly women until the 1970s, when the last tenants moved out and the building fell into disrepair.
Before the Association’s board was able to tear the building down, Columbia University Historic Preservation students launched a campaign to save the building from destruction. The building is then landmarked in 1983.
From 1977 to 1990, Hostelling International (then American Youth Hostels) worked with the City of New York, the local development corporation, and a private developer to re-design, finance and rehabilitate the building. It opened January 19, 1990 as New York City’s first official youth hostel.
