Hyatt Place New York Midtown South

Great location, great value, friendly staff, clean rooms, nice view of Empire State. What more could you ask for. Derek the manager exceeded our expectations on our 27^th anniversary.

UPDATE: The bites I thought were from mosquitos on a patio my last night were confirmed to be from bed bugs! My mom had them too from sharing the king bed! Ew!!!
This hotel was very solidly average. The room was clean and large enough for our needs. There were three of us in town for the weekend. It had a king bed and fill pull out couch, which was just enough for our needs.
The room was sufficiently clean each day. The downside was that we stayed in a handicap accessible room. The set up of the shower totally soaked the entire bathroom, no matter how you positioned the shower head.
The free breakfast in the morning was nice and the staff were pleasant.
What made it so average was that there was no flair, no elegance, no amenities. It is located on a fairly dirty street with a number of closed down businesses. It felt more like a Best Western or Comfort Inn as compared to what I have come to expect from a Hyatt.

Nice hotel in midtown. Clean and modern rooms. Complimentary breakfast each day until 10am. Friendly staff. We arrived to NY in the morning, so we checked our bags at the front desk and went sightseeing before our room was ready. The Hyatt is in walking distance to Madison Square Garden, Times Square and lots of midtown shopping. Two great Irish bars are right next door, Pub Room (sports bar) and McGettigan’s (swanky bar) before good drinks and food. After checkout, they also held out bags until departure so we could shop and see sights. I would definitely stay here for a perfect central spot to see NYC!

Customer Service needs vast improvement, i felt as if my patronage of hotel wasn’t important I was advised that my online reservation meant nothing, and rooms weren’t guaranteed. The lobby furniture was filthy and needed serious cleaning. I was told they did ²⁴⁄₇ food and was advised not to eat there by an employee no less. Multiple dirty dishes were left in the stair wells for hours. Walked to gym in the morning noticed the dirty dishes, stayed for several hours, went back to room, left to go touring the city came back around 9pm walked to my room on third floor still dishes. I would no recommend this hotel to anyone.

My family and I stayed here just before Christmas. Location was convenient and the staff was very friendly. You can order food ²⁴⁄₇ although you have to pick it up in the lobby, the food didn’t take long and was a service I was expecting at this location. Housekeeping comes late in the day and I would have preferred them coming earlier but they made it a point to call and see if we still wanted the room cleaned and if we needed any amenities. Elizabeth in housekeeping went above and beyond by locating a beloved stuffed animal that my son left behind in our room. She called me back and made arrangements to Fed X it to us right which was extremely appreciated!!!

. The reservation was put in for the wrong date and I was charged as a no show for the night. I was not even in the state of New York. I called several times and finally reached & spoke with Cody the «front desk office Manager» and was told there was nothing he could do once the Credit card machine day had ended not even applied to another night when I was actually in the city… I currently run my own business and I have a credit card machine.
I worked front desk for a 4 star hotel for 2 years. He was completely wrong and refunding my money could have been done he just didn’t want to… I will say
went out of there way calling everyday and emailing which took 4 or 5 days to get a reply.
Because of «Cody» I will never stay at another Hyatt Place ANYWHERE ever again… And to top it all of the recording on their machine says they won hospitality Hotel of the year in 2013 for customer service. I know why they haven’t won it in past 2 years! #HYATTPLACENEWYORK #HYATTPLACE

This morning I am writing my review after collecting my thoughts over what transpired the weekend of September 12^th. My husband, 4 other marines, and the wife of one of the marines of the group (total 6) stayed in a standard room at this location. We had to select that type of room due to limited availability we found in the city for the midtown area, even though the hotel was booked in advanced (Aug 31^st). The 4 marines were there for the «Carry the Fallen-​9/​11 Memorial Ruck March” – an event for veteran suicide prevention awareness. The event took place Saturday at 9am, and I alongside with my good friend (the other wife) had inquired over the phone FIRST about early check in or if not to at least leave our bags up front until it was check in time. They gave us the option to leave our bags-​no problem. The next question that was asked was what is the rate for a room for 6 tonight including a 10% military discount – they gave us a price that was $ 200 less than the price quoted by Expedia! Of course we wanted to know if it were possible to get the new quoted rate as we wanted to stay for the best price– we didn’t want anything more than that as 1: Expedia promises the «best price guarantee» and 2: we simply wanted to keep the general rate stated by the very hotel we were staying at. Come time (an hour or so after the phone call) for us to drop off our bags, the general staff whom were up front before noon were EXCELLENT. They were extremely courteous. When we asked who would be the person to ask for if we wanted to further discuss the room rate situation, we were advised to wait for Tiffany, the manager for the day, who wouldn’t be in until 2pm.
My friend and I went for lunch around the corner. We came back, and Tiffany was occupied with another customer. Since we were told to wait to a side up front, I had an angled view of the front desk and noticed my husband’s name written on a post-​it at her desk area. I assumed in my head that she totally anticipated our arrival. Once it was our turn to talk to her, we once again explained our situation. The entire time, she had a smile on her face, which sure enough even a blind person could see that it turned into the most fake smile as she said with a BIG FAKE SMIRK «…I know who you are… and no, we are not changing your rate» and she stopped giving us eye contact, stared at her screen, and began to pretend-​click away on her computer. My friend and I stood there in disbelief after the cold shoulder we received from – of all people – the designated person to address these situations. She refused to give us any option on what we can do. She began to act like we were an inconvenience for her, because she just kept saying «no» with a smile. It wasn’t until my friend told her she used to work at a hotel that she decided to pay attention to us. All for us to go back and forth with her and rebuttal to us that there’s a «48 hour cancellation policy if you want the cancellation fee to be waived» and «if you cancel and don’t stay here tonight, you will be charged the rate of the room» (MIND YOU, we DIDN’T WANT TO «cancel» THE ROOM! We just had to take that step in the system in order to rebook the room at the lower rate!!) and «we don’t work with or make exceptions for rooms that are booked by third parties.» My friend insisted that she knows the rate isn’t placed until the end of the stay. And mind you, I spoke on the phone with Expedia and they said they wouldn’t mind at all to help us with the situation so long as the manager gave the OK. She did not want to budge. I would have totally understood if there was nothing she could do system-​wise but she just told us with a big grin, not that there’s nothing she could do… but rather that she flat-​out «WILL NOT do it.» I find it so appalling that she didn’t let Expedia help them help us. We were not being ridiculous with our request. We wanted the fairest rate for the room. When my friend asked to please get the phone number of her superior she said «he’s not here today.» WE DIDN’T ASK IF HE WAS THERE, WE ASKED FOR HIS NUMBER! Again, we ask for his number. She wrote the direct line for BRIAN, and said he would be in Monday morning after 9am. It’s been 24 hours since my friend and Brian have communicated, and requested a detailed email about what transpired. And I truly hope something is done about Tiffany’s attitude with the $ 200 we lost. Shame on you Hyatt for having people with poor hospitality skills to be in charge of your weekend guests. I will never recommend a Hyatt hotel-​EVER!

The hotels location was in a great spot and every single person we encountered while there was very pleasant. Although we did pay a bit too much for 2 queen beds ($ 622 for one night) I have to give this place 1 star for a particular staff member (Tiffany) who was not only rude, but arrogant and very disrespectful. We booked the room through Expedia and when I checked in asking how much the room was they stated it was almost $ 200 cheaper with a military discount than what we had booked through Expedia with. We were staying in the city as my husband a few of his fellow marines were participating in a 9 mile fundraiser to bring attention to veteran suicide; called carry the fallen ⁹⁄₁₁ Memorial Ruck.
I asked if there was anything that can be done– can we cancel the room and they wave the cancellation fee– then use re-​book the room to obtain the lower rate? The woman who was working at the front desk stated that this shouldn’t be an issue but we would have to wait for Tiffany. We got to the hotel at 11:30 AM and I called Expedia explaining the situation– they said we can go ahead and cancel the booking through Expedia– and if the hotel will waive the cancellation fee we can re-​book directly with the hotel; resulting in us saving a significant amount of money.
We went back to the hotel at 2:45 and I explained the situation to Tiffany– she was too busy typing away on her computer and all she kept saying was «your rate will not change– I will not be changing your rate– that’s too bad because you are paying what you are paying». When she would actually acknowledge that we were standing in front of her she kept a smirk on her face the entire time. I have never experienced such rude customer service and for her to be considered a manager is really a joke. I told her that we have 4 veterans staying with us and it doesn’t make sense why she would not change the reservation for us– to save us almost $ 200. I was not cancelling and not re-​booking. I was simply looking to get the better rate.
I worked in the hospitality industry and know for a fact that you do not get billed until AFTER you check out– and the hotel can change the rates that are given to a guest– whether direct or through a third party. Expedia was more than willing to help us and they understood the issue; Tiffany didn’t care about our situation and was not willing to help us at all. I have NEVER encountered a person with such a terrible attitude working in the customer service area.
Her lack of customer service, the nasty smirk on her face the entire time and her arrogant attitude has resulted in 6 people who would never stay at another Hyatt again. I am also going to be speaking with the GM today about the type of people they put in management positions.

The location was awesome– Just a few blocks from Herald Square, Penn Station and Grand Central. A pretty central location I’d say.
Staff were very friendly! (Many front desk receptionists at other hotels are very rude)
The rooms were cozy, comfortable and stylish/​modern (even the key cards and free pens were cute and stylish!) The bed sheets and pillows were very clean and the bathroom had enough towels and supplies for guests. Room has a nice mini fridge too. My friend and I stayed in a 1 king size bed room and it came with a comfy couch.
Only cons were that the AC in the room was a little bit too loud and the elevators were super slow.
I would definitely go back there!

I am picky as hell when I am in uncomfortable situations and I swore to La Virgin de Guadalupe, that this Hotel better not make me snap… better not have rude ass people at reception… or be dirty… and them sheets better be smooth…(three snaps up in a Z-​Formation with a neck roll)
ON THE CONTRARY… I felt like I walked into the gates of Heaven as I entered Hyatt Place… someone grabbed my bags. lead me to the front desk, smiling gentleman behind the counter said «Welcome Maaam, let’s check you in» (shit did I look that tore up?) I was offered a Sangria at the reception… and quickly checked in…
Up on the elevator, it was like my fast track to peace and tranquility… 22^nd floor… I liked the antique-​ish wood textures and dark tones of the hallways…
The room was a breath of fresh air… ceiling to floor windows, with the most amazing view of The Empire State Building… The bed set up so you could just collapse and stare at the beautiful skyline, day and night… and glance at CNN on the huge swivel flat screen TV.
All toiletries were quality, and was even given complimentary extra items that I had forgotten (silly me)
The room was quiet, very quiet and peaceful…
The free continental breakfast was of much higher quality than expected, the dining area very roomy.
I enjoyed a spinach egg breakfast sandwich with I believe Gouda cheese, fresh fruit a variety of Starbucks Coffee and Tazo Teas included.
Would I stay here again? You bet your ass I will and if you are like me, if you research the hell outta things, like me… this Hyatt Place Hotel has been looked over with a fine tooth comb… I think you will have a pretty good stay… I also found this deal on

Location: close to Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, and about a 30 min walk from Central Park. #winning
Staff: since they couldn’t get us early check-​in, they happily stored our baggage so we could prance around town for a couple of hours.
Service: Exceptional. I’ve been to many hotels and their staff was attentive, helpful, and very friendly.

This hotel is not your typical Hyatt. Things were a little «off.» For example: 1. Although there is a fitness center, the elliptical machine was not balanced, making it difficult to use. 2. When we were checking out, the clerk couldn’t locate the stickers for the parking garage. 3. The rooms, elevators, and lobby are small. 4. There is no concierge.
On the positive side: 1. The location is good if you want to be midtown — it is on 36^th Street between 5^th and 6^th Avenue. The Empire State building is just around the corner and it is an easy walk to Times Squre. 2. Rosalyn at the front desk was very helpful when we wanted to change rooms. 3. The included breakfast was good.

I’ve stayed at many Hyatt Places and this isn’t like any other I’ve every stayed at.
First the room is less than ½ the size of any other location. I get it, it’s NY, but the closet couldn’t hold ANY other clothing than our two coats!
There is no place to stop and unload. I stopped in front of the hotel for 10 seconds to drop off my wife and luggage and an employee was shooing me away. The hotel has a relationship with a parking garage ½ a block down the street, but it’s $ 39 per 24 hour period and if you stay 48 hours and 1 minute, they charge you for 3 days! Rip Off.
Also it’s noisy. I stayed on the 19^th floor, but the windows were so thin it sounded like I was on the first floor with the windows open. There are honking horns, construction across the street and an endless string of garbage trucks picking up, backing up and generally making noise all night long.
Lastly, the sheets are stained so you just get an overall feeling it could be cleaner.
On the upside, you get a free breakfast plus any small item you forgot like a toothbrush.

I should preface this by saying I didn’t book this hotel so I don’t know the price, however based on the prices I’m seeing on their site, staying at Hyatt Place is a great a deal and here’s why:
Pros:
— Clean sheets
— Clean bathroom
— Rooms are absolutely quiet at the 19^th floor (big win for me)
— Free breakfast (pancakes, sausage, eggs, cereal, pastries, fruit) of ok quality
— For my purposes, this location is pretty central
Cons:
— Slow elevators. There are only two elevators for about 180+ rooms. This is a pain in the morning when everyone wants free breakfast.
— OK selection of tv channels. No HGTV or FoodTV, but there are two HBO channels. Meh. Whatever. I’m not here to watch tv.
— Water pressure in the shower is just ok. I’ve experienced worse.
— Enough counter space in the hotel, although I’m not sure why they don’t install extra towel racks (for more than one guest) and WHY do these hotels think putting a towel rack in the shower/​tub area is a good idea?
To be fair, I only stayed here one night for work. The room had two queen beds with a sofa bed, so the price was probably less than $ 270 since my roomie booked this with a AAA discount. I really liked this hotel more than the Roosevelt, so if I were to come back to visit, you can bet I’m going to keep this hotel in my back pocket.

We found ourselves booking this hotel last minute due to a complete fail through VRBO at an apartment. The place is clean and offers free wifi and breakfast. It is comfortable and some of the rooms have amazing views. We love the Hyatt Place. Our room has the coolest view of the Empire State Building. It was impressive.

We visited last month, as we’d never experienced the city at Christmas. We planned to stay a couple days here, then moved to a Times Square hotel to be closer to the things we experienced up there. Long story short, this hotel far exceeded the more expensive full service hotel where we subsequently stayed.
First of all, the front staff are terrific. We were always greeted with a smile, a comment about the weather, a question about how our day was, whether we needed anything, etc. They seemed genuinely happy to be there, and were very helpful & friendly.
Secondly, the room. Indeed it’s compact, but well within NY standards. Everything we needed was easily accessible, and the space itself is very well thought out.
I had read many comments about the elevators, and I’m not sure whether it was an anomaly or whether they’ve actually fixed it, but we had absolutely no issues. The housekeeping staff were great, and our room was spotless. More importantly, it was very quiet, and we slept wonderfully.
Location wise, this was a great area for us. Easily accessible, close to Macy’s Herald Square, and very convenient to walk or take the subway to multiple sites.
This isn’t a full service hotel, but for what it is — and a reasonable price at that — it’s an excellent choice both for business as well as for families. Definitely recommend!

Honestly this place is a bang for your buck, free breakfast, free wifi, and a clean room! All was as expected from a Hyatt, very welcomed and great room view of the Empire State Building! My only complaint is how long the elevators take, considering there’s only two. There is stairs but that’s not the best option when you’re on the 16^th floor. In conclusion this place is clean, great deal, close to time square and Empire State Building.

I had to be in NYC for business, so I booked this hotel for three nights. Mainly I chose this hotel because it was one of the few hotels marked by my company as «preferred,» but also because of the location, free Wifi, and free breakfast.
I booked a room with a King-​sized bed, with no sofa bed and no view. Normally this room would go for $ 279/​night, but because of my corporate rate, my company was instead paying $ 199/​night. Either way, very reasonable rates for NYC. And I was impressed that the room had a couch, ottoman, and minifridge.
LOCATION
Really great location in Midtown South. Took me 12 minutes to walk to my conference location in the Theater District, 5 minutes to walk to Koreatown meeting a friend for dinner, and 2 minutes to the nearest Subway station.
FREE WIFI
Had no trouble streaming Netflix and YouTube videos while connected wirelessly. But on my last night, the Wifi went down, and I was told by the front desk that Time Warner was experiencing an outage in the entire block. The estimate I was given for fixing this was 30 minutes, but the Wifi still wasn’t back the next morning. Not a huge deal, and not really the fault of Hyatt, but more of a minor annoyance.
FREE BREAKFAST
Excellent, high-​quality breakfast served from 6:30 — 9:00 AM with fresh fruit (fruit salad, pre-​cut grapefruit segments, apples, bananas, etc), yogurt, oatmeal, pastries, toast/​bagels, cereal, rotating hot breakfast sandwiches and a hot breakfast entrée (one day there was cinnamon French toast), juice (apple, orange, and tomato), and coffee/​tea by Starbucks. See attached picture of my first breakfast: sunrise croissant (egg, mushrooms, spinach, and muenster cheese on half a croissant), ruby red grapefruit segments, a banana, and orange juice. And they have cups with lids, so I took a Tazo green tea to-​go.
STAFF
Hotel staff were all very courteous and helpful. Many of the staff went out of their way to be friendly to me.
COMPLIMENTARY ITEMS
One reviewer mentioned that they don’t provide free lotion like most hotels. In-​room, they only provide two bars of soap (for the sink and the tub), shampoo, and conditioner – but they have a list at the front desk of free and on-​loan items that they do give/​loan out. (See attached pictures.) My issue the first night was that I was given only the bars of soap and the conditioner (shampoo was missing). Wasn’t a big deal since I’d brought my own, but probably some sort of oversight by housekeeping.
ELEVATORS
Another reviewer mentioned that this hotel needs more elevators. (There are only two for 20+ floors.) Because I chose «no view,» I was given a room on the second floor, which was great because I could take the stairs easily and not have to worry about waiting for an elevator. If you’re not planning on spending much time in your room, I would either request «no view» or call ahead and ask for a room on a lower floor.
NOISE
Another reviewer also mentioned that the noise from the street is loud throughout the night. To solve this, the hotel does provide free earplugs, but I’m a super light sleeper and had no trouble once I downloaded a white noise app on my phone.
If I’m ever in the city again and need a hotel to stay, I’ll definitely be coming back and would recommend the same for anyone!

I’m not sure why there are so many low reviews here. Yes, the elevators that service 27 floors could have been faster — or I suppose there could have been more of them — but it’s not that the 2 there were are abnormally slow or anything. Free in room WiFi, small gym (lower level) and free breakfast on the main level (as is standard for Hyatt Place properties). Seems like 5 stars to me. Also a business center on the main level and a good amount of lobby seating — there was also patio seating in front of the property.
The staff here could not have been more friendly and helpful. Ask the front desk for anything from a map to dinner recommendations to calling for a cab and check out the brochure rack in the business center as there are suggestions of things to do there.
My 21^st floor room gave a great view of the Empire State Building which was just blocks away! The room was spacious for NYC — normal room size in my opinion. Two queens beds, couch, desk, desk chair, big flat TV… not a complaint to be had about the room or location of the hotel. Not only is it right by the ESB but it is near Macy’s, Bryant Park, the library, and several subway stops and parks.
My room 2104 was an ADA room which in this case meant the shower was roll in style so there was no lip to keep the water in the room. This made taking a shower a bit of a trick, but if you used the handheld shower instead of the one permanently mounted on the wall things worked out find. You didn’t have to hold the handheld shower head, but it could be directed away from the shower curtain better than the one permanently mounted on the wall which kept the bathroom floor drier. No noise issues in the room at all and good light blocking curtains which made for a great night sleep.

I really like the Hyatt Place brand and was happy when I discovered they opened one in Midtown!
It’s not a «full service» hotel, but from what I could see the only things missing were valet car service and room service (although they do have a ²⁴⁄₇ kitchen, you just have to go pick it up).
Decent views for Midtown — from my room, I could see the middle of the Empire State Building (and the top if I leaned). The room was pretty small, especially compared to other Hyatt Places, but… it’s Manhattan so I wasn’t surprised.
Free wifi, gym in the basement, and a free «continental +» breakfast (it was like halfway between continental and buffet).
A good hotel for a great price, will definitely stay again!
