We aim to provide the highest level of care to our clients, helping them identify and work towards the resolution of issues causing emotional distress. Because IHI is also a training institute, our therapists offer a broad range of therapeutic approaches, this ensures clients get the best fit for their concerns. Our goal is to help clients work through current problems but also provide them with the skills and tools to successfully manage future events.

History

Established in 1973.

The Institute for Human Identity was established in 1973 to provide professional mental health services to the LGBT community. After leading the successful campaign with the American Psychiatric Association to have homosexuality removed from the list of mental disorders, the founders of IHI recognized the need for a therapy center that could address people’s emotional problems while respecting and fostering their unique identity.

Meet the Manager

Benet H.

Manager

Ben H is a Director at the Institute for Human Identity. He was born and educated in London, UK where he earned BA Honors in History. Following that he decided to seek advanced degrees in psychology and counseling.

Ben earned a Postgraduate Certificate of Counseling and Communication from the Australian College of Applied Psychology (PG.Cert.), he returned to US to attend Columbia University. He graduated from Columbia with a Masters degree in Psychological Counseling (M.A.) and a Master oF Education in Psychology (Ed.M.). Benet is a New York State licensed Mental Health Counselor

He has experience working with patients with substance abuse issues, Major Depressive Disorder, anxiety disorders, and personality disorders and is extextensively trained in Multicultural Counseling and LGBTQ issues.

Ben is a member of the American Psychological Association and the British Association of Counseling Professionals
