This exhibit honors the Countess Jacqueline de Ribes, one of the most celebrated fashion icons of the 20th century. You can find the presentation in the basement of the Met or the Anna Wintour Costume Center from November 19, 2015 through February 21, 2016. The Countess had impeccable style. She bought and collected items from the likes of Giorgio Armani, Marc Bohan for House of Dior, Roberto Cavalli, John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Guy Laroche, Ralph Lauren, and Yves Saint Laurent. She cannabalized many of her older dresses, coats and incorporated them into beautiful ‘new’ outfits. The videos and photographs of her modeling the haute couture pieces were amazing. I think the problem with this exhibit is there weren’t enough pieces and enough pictures of Jacqueline modeling these outfits. When you look at the pieces on the mannequins, you miss the personality and confidence of the creator and model of the clothing. And some of the outfits look so old, outdated, and excessive. Too many frills, too big of a bow, and the flowers are so large and ostentatious. Yet when you see the outfit on her, you realize how perfectly tailored each piece was to fit Jacqueline de Ribes and her personality.
