Jazz On the Town Hostel

I was so disappointed with this hostel. It was so noisy that I think I only slept total of 6 hours for 2 days. Between very heavy doors and people slamming them and cleaning ladies talking so loud I wasn’t able to sleep at all. Rooms are too small, showers ware filthy. Definitely bring your own towels. My suggestion do not book at this hostel if you want to sleep at all.

I stayed here last night (1 night), and the bed was very uncomfortable. My back now aches. I explained to the manager Gloria that I couldn’t stay the second night to do the mattress hurting my back, but she was not willing to refund it. So I reported it to my bank to dispute the second night’s fee.

I’ve stayed at a lot of hostels in the past and this was my worst experience. I arrived late for the 8-​people room and the hostel was entirely booked. First I was told the computer was down and they couldn’t give me a room key. Then I had to do all the unpacking in the dark. Then the one thing that really threw me off was when I walked in my room i found out the «A/​C was broken», so I was told by the front desk girl, though only 2 minutes earlier, she said there’s A/​C in the room. It was literally 80 degrees in there at 2 in the morning. There was a fan blowing the entire night and it wasn’t helping with the temperature but was definitely loud as hell. I have no idea how I slept through the night, what I do know is I caught a cold the next morning from the fan, because I was sweating. I went down stair and found the front desk was nice and cool with their own air conditioning blowing cool air. I don’t like to be lied to, they probably never had a working A/​C ever in the room but they first told me there was A/​C, and then they told me they would put in a work order to fix it, fix it my ass.
The bathroom was filthy and I had a feeling the whole building would just collapse on itself if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s being propped up by two adjacent buildings, speaking from a civil engineer perspective.
Note to self, never stay at a cheap hostel again.

After a rough flight my awesome experience with Jazz on the Town Hostel was like my home away from home. I checked in, no problem. Granted it was on the second floor and I had horribly large and heavy luggage. It was definitely the New York experience, but my triceps were thankful. The rooms were clean and well stocked. My room faced the front of the building, so I had an excellent view of the city life. I loved how the beds were assigned, because there’s no question about what bed you’re in. My roommates were so cool, immediately friendly, no awkwardness. We immediately began talking about where we were from, why we were there and what we planned to see while we were there.
After my fashion show, I came back to my room, everything was exactly were I left it. My locker looked untouched and I had friendly faces welcoming me back. I spent some time in the TV room and although the TV and DVD weren’t working, it really didn’t matter. There was groups of people (from many parts of the world) gathered there and before you know I was conversing in different languages, sharing experiences and sharing beers. I had a blast and will definitely will come back again. I wish I could have been apart of the bar crawls, I really needed it!

Only good if you really can’t afford anything else.
I had several problems with this place. Yes, it’s cheap, but there are some things that could have been better:
1. The décor is horrible — Lot’s of painting mistakes, unfinished walls, laminate floor not installed properly resulting in several gaps in the flooring. Everything was painted over several times, and clearly in different bright colors (visible because of the brush mistakes). It’s like they had a kid do the painting and didn’t give him painter’s tape. A little wall art might have been nice, just to make the place look nicer.
2. The towels are like sandpaper — Unless you want exfoliation that strips the skin off your bones, bring your own towels. There also were no small towels for bathing. The towels aren’t even in the room, you have to actually get the towels yourself– at times from out of the dryer.
3. They put me in the wrong room — I asked for a female dorm, and the first night there were all girls, but the second morning, I woke up and there was a dude in the bunk above mine! I went down to ask what was the deal, and they said they had me down for a co-​ed room, and the female room was booked until after I was to leave town. My confirmation shows that the mistake was not mine. But no apologies were offered.
4. A couple of times, they ran out of towels, so we had to wait for some to finish in the dryer.
5. My key card stopped working after 3 days (the same happened to my roommates), so they had to re-​activate them. This wouldn’t have been a problem, except I had just schlepped up that killer stairway to the 4^th floor and had to go all the way down and back up again. (No, I’m not out of shape, I was there for a dance convention.) The stairway is just super-​narrow, winding, and steep.
6. The room was so small, it was only wide enough for the two bunk beads and one person to walk between them. The bathroom was tiny, and there were no hooks to hang stuff in there while showering.
7. The walls are thin and the doors are weighted, I guess, for self-​closing. The first night as I was TRYING to fall asleep, I could hear doors slamming every few minutes. I was furious, because I was really tired, and every time I nodded off— SLAM! Fortunately, that didn’t happen again.
Tips if you stay here:
Bring your own towels, ask for a room close to the ground if possible, make sure they give you the right room, and spend so little time in the room to where it doesn’t bother you that it’s not so nicely appointed. And bring earplugs just in case.

i’ve stayed here 4 times already and i’ll be back again. the staff is really friendly, the place is nice for what you’re paying and i’ve met some really amazing people while staying here. it’s in a great location (between two subway stops) and right across the street from artichoke for those 2am slices.

I am amazed there are so few reviews for Jazz on the Town! This is one of the most conveniently located, reasonable hostels in the East Village.
First, the good:
Easy, well-​organized check-​in. They assign you a bed, so no drama with your roommates.
4 or 8 bed rooms, both mixed and girls-​only rooms. I don’t think they have boys only rooms, but I could be mistaken.
Great rooftop deck for days with nice weather!
No smoking inside.
Comfortable lounge on the 3^rd floor with TV and internet access (pay as you go)
Friendly, knowledgeable staff
En-​suite bathrooms in all hostel rooms!
They’ll give you extra blankets for no fee!
THE LOCATION! Seriously, right off the L train and a ton of other lines. In the heart of the East Village. You couldn’t ask for more.
The bad:
Beds aren’t all that comfortable and they make a TON of noise when you wiggle in bed
LOTS of steep stairs. Gotta be careful after a night out!
And, thats really it!
Overall, its a great place to stay. I’ve come back time and time again.

I had never had the experience of staying in a hostel before this but the 5 days I spent here was great. Granted I like my space and being alone in my own room. I had to share a room with a couple from England and a Pakistani woman in a 4 bunk room. I was lucky and had the bottom bunk near the door on the first floor. The beds were comfortable and the street and interior noise was minimal. The room did get awfully warm but opening the window and the AC helped.
The rooms were small but very spotless and cleaned daily. I never had a problem with valubles or anything the in-​room lockers were a godsend for 25 cents.
The staff was incredible and smiling and helped you out with everything you could ask for an they were all very funny and intelligent. I would have rated it higher if the internet area and the kitchen area were a bit bigger. 3 people in that room were too many.
This is a great place cause its centrally located and if your out and about all the time then this place should be just what your looknig for.

This as great as a hostel can get. Of course roomates can really vary, but our experience was great.
I live on the west coast, and stayed there with my brother for new years eve 07′. We tried to find a hotel, but they were $ 325 plus for a one bed room (New York on new years, go figure). Jazz on the town was $ 35 dollars a bed (8 beds a room), and in a great location right next to a major subway station. The staff was really cool. we were complaining to the guy working there that all of the wine shops were closed, and he offered to sell us some that he had there, very cool. The other employees were great too.
They have a computer room with internet, It’s not free, but it’s cheap and you use your credit card. Upstairs on the roof is a really cool place to hang out. Don’t need to go to the bars, just take a bottle of wine to the roof and enjoy the view from the tables set up. Great view of the city.
I’ve done a lot of hostel traveling in my life, and this place is one of the best. Clean, comfortable (for a hostel), and cheap. Check it out.
