Jed Best and his new dentist (now not so new) are great.
Caveat: I no longer go to him even though I like him because we ended up moving anyway. I should also say: He doesn’t take insurance and so you pay out of pocket and only get some money back if you have out of network benefits, which I did not have. However, he seems to offer some follow up and emergency visits for free as part of his general services or at least did when I went.
Another caveat: Dr. Best has shortened hours. However, he has an associate now who takes on the rest of the week when Dr. Best is not in the office and that associate is fantastic, too. Also, what I appreciated is that even when Dr. Best was unavailable, his staff was still working so they at least picked up their phones. During lunch, they have an answering machine, but they do always returned their calls and his front desk staff were very competent and nice. I didn’t always love the front desk at other doctor offices, and his stood out as really professional, knowledgeable, kind, efficient.
I recommend Dr. Best without reservation. He is great with the kids without being polyanna or talking down like some dentists and doctors do. I went to him because another dentist told me that my then pre-​schooler had a cavity and suggested some other things, all out of pocket and from what I found on the internet, extreme. So I went to Dr. Best. Dr. Best reviewed my child’s teeth and disagreed with the first dentist, but said that it did look like it may become a cavity and we could watch it. I always trusted him and felt that he was very moral and didn’t encourage invasive and/​or unnecessary treatments.
After that issue was resolved, I was busy and did not bring my child back for a long time — over a year at least. One day, my child fell in the playground and was sent home with a bloody mouth. The school nurse said it was nothing, but another parent urged me to get my child seen by a dentist immediately (as she had her own bad story with her own child in a similar accident).
I felt a little uncomfortable reaching out to Dr. Best after not having seen him, but, since I had no other dentist and it was emergency, I called. Even though Dr. Best’s office had not seen my family a long time, they took me in THAT day about two hours after I called. In addition, when I asked them what it would cost, they told me that it would be free.
They confirmed that although my child’s adult tooth was, thankfully, ok, I had to keep an eye on an impounded baby tooth. I went back as they suggested to have them look at the impounded tooth and they again, told me it was free. Finally, after about a year, the impounded baby tooth had to be pulled because it was hindering the growth of another adult tooth. They did charge me for that procedure, as they should have.
I trust Dr. Best and his associate completely and really like this office.
I also really like almost all of his assistants (hygenists). I had one eh experience with one early on and told the admin front office and they said that I wouldn’t see her again if I didn’t want to and they did not after that. Every other assistant I saw was fantastic.

Dr. Jed best would not take my 6 year old daughter when her tooth was bothering her. He told me he couldn’t see her for three weeks. We have been clients of his since my 10 year old son was 3.

Prior to coming to Dr. Best, I had just taken my 3 yr old daughter for a «first time» check up at a dental clinic because I do not have dental insurance. The dentist there informed that my daughter had 7 cavities and needed to be taken immediately to the NYU dental school for fillings! I was so scared wondering how this could have happened, how will she sit still while some student drilled in her mouth… I finally decided to bite the bullet and take her to Dr. Best (even though I was terrified what he would charge me way beyond what I could really afford because he is a well known UWS pediatric dentist, offering all the bells and whistles for children).
I am so glad I did! My daughter was very nervous but he made her feel comfortable, explaining everything he was doing in a way she could understand. He informed us that she did not have 7 cavities but that she really only had 2 cavities and offered to treat her in a less invasive way that would be just as effective as fillings. She finished her appointment with a new toothbrush, a small toy and a smile.
We have been back 3 more times and every time the staff has been friendly and sweet to my daughter. And although she does not «like» the varnishing treatments on her teeth or the fluoride I have to apply every night on her teeth, she trusts Dr. Best and everyone who works there. She understands that she has to take good care of her teeth and doesn’t complain. My other daughter came to watch her sister during her last appointment and begged to go to Dr. Best too.
As I mentioned before, I have to pay for every cent of dental care out-​of-​pocket and it can be very scary for our family, but Dr Best has been generous and wonderful. He doesn’t overcharge or try to give your children expensive treatments they don’t need. In fact he’s the opposite. He’s conservative with his treatments. I really can’t say enough good things… I am grateful to have found him and our family trusts him.

A great kids’ dentist – with a huge caveat.
Really professional and friendly staff. For a dentist who deals with high-​maintenance uptown folk, Dr. Best is low-​key and relaxed.
The problem is that the office hours are so limited that you will have to schedule six months in advance (or more), or have your kid miss school.
We had to switch to a different dentist because the scheduling was impossible. Something to research before you sign on.

Dr Best was my dentist from as soon as I had teeth until I was too old to see a pediatric dentist (17). I actually looked forward to my appointments because unlike my own home, his office had video games. I simply have no negative dentist memories, he always did a great job, has a great way with kids, and even had videos you can watch from an overhead tv while you’re in the chair. Its been 8 years since I stopped going to him but I’ve bumped into him several times on the upper west side and he’s remembered me, bc that’s the kinda guy he is.

Like other children’s dentists, Dr. Best has a lot of gimmickry to distract the little ones from the fact that someone is working on their teeth or to induce them to brush and floss.

This guy is the best kid’s dentist ever! Children love him, and for goodness sakes, his last name is Best! He really is great. Both my brother and I went to him for long long time (until we outgrew him) and he did everything from filling cavities and doing cleanings to extracting a few teeth. We loved him the whole time, and my little brother would actually look forward to going to the dentist because he had video games and my parents would let him play all he wanted, along with being able to watch whatever we wanted on TV while everything got done, and the office always gave us toys and stuff. Ah, to be a kid again!
