Dr. Shin & her team are awesome! Living in NYC there are endless options for almost anything, but when it comes to personal health and wellness I want nothing but the best. I would highly recommend this dental practice. The staff is inviting and polite and from the moment I entered there was professionalism and transparency. Dr. Shin is attentive to questions and extremely knowledgeable. The space is very clean and well maintained which accents the modern tools and equipment that the team uses. This is my 1^st review here on Unilocal and I want to potentially help others in their decision making process! I know its safe to say that we have all at some point had a negative experience at the dentist, needless to say Dr. Shin is great. Two thumbs up!

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I really liked Dr. Linton. She was professional and had great bedside manner. She did my cleaning herself and it was the most gentle, yet thorough cleaning I’ve ever had. With the dentist, I really just want 2 things: to feel like I’m in good hands, and to not have to worry about whether I’m being upsold on things I don’t actually need. I got that with Dr. Linton, so I think I found myself a new dentist. It doesn’t hurt that the office is immaculately clean and beautiful, and the staff is friendly and competent.

Clean, friendly, professional and great dental work. While dental work is never truly fun, Dr. Shin and her staff make it as comfortable as possible. The office is great and I have never had to wait once I get there, the service is immediate. Very nice people and I am lucky to have found her!

I’ve been going to Dr. Shin since 2005. Despite job and insurance changes in the past 10 years, I would never consider going to any other dentist. I’ve had 1 root canal here and maybe a dozen fillings of all sizes over the years (I’m 45). She made me a night guard to combat my bruxing (tooth grinding at night). I bring the night guard with me for my cleanings and she checks it – and cleans it, too!
To add to other comments about flossing, I can sometimes drop the ball on that one but she never shames me for not flossing enough. Although I usually do… it’s just when I get occasionally lazy.
I think I’ve had 5 or more friends/​co-​workers go to her over the years. Everyone reports back to me how grateful they are for the referral. I usually tell them that going to Dr. Shin is like going to a spa. She has ergonomic chairs, top of the line digital x-​ray equipment, flat panel TVs in front of your chair so you can a) watch TV to distract yourself during a procedure or b) so you can see up-​close your own x-​rays or photos she takes of her procedures as she does them. You actually learn something about dentistry which makes it interesting and fun (for me anyway).
Dr. Shin has an undergrad degree in psychology (Yale) and her DDS degree from NYU. She also taught at NYU for a bit. She’s not just my dentist, but a friend. So grateful to have her in my life — and my mouth!

I usually hate, hate, hate the dentist. I’m terrified of them. But Dr. Shin could not have been more pleasant. Her staff has been outrageously helpful in assisting me with an insurance company nightmare, and Dr. Shin herself is thorough and kind (what more could you want in a dentist?). I stupidly thought I could get a filling without novocain because I am TERRIFIED of needles and when the pain got to be too much she was super gentle in administering the shot and patient with me afterward when I was acting like a toddler. I can’t recommend this place more.

Just got back from a cleaning with Dr. Kimberly Fields. I wish I had found her sooner! I’ve gone to 3 different dentists in NYC over the past few years, and they’ve ranged from «meh» to «just okay.» But Dr. Fields was awesome. She explained everything really thoroughly, and walked me through the various pictures and x-​rays so I understood everything. And on top of that, the cleaning was top notch. My teeth feel amazing!
Above and beyond the excellent dental care, I was really impressed by all of the staff. Everyone was so nice and welcoming and upbeat. Exactly the kind of people you want to interact with when you’re going to the dentist. The entire office was perfectly clean as well, and they seemed to have all the latest tools and technology. The views weren’t bad either!
If you’re looking for a good dentist in NYC, I definitely recommend checking out this practice.

I definitely recommend this place. It is such a journey. I came here because my filling needs a replacement. It only takes me an hour to finish the check and filling. Quick and nice. No afraid at all. Also, she did a wonderful job. Thanks so much, and will check soon for the exam.

I seriously love Dr. Shin. I’ve never really liked any dentist before, and I’ve tried many, but Dr. Shin is really fantastic.
She’s undoubtedly aggressive and proactive in her recommendations, but it always comes across to me as being part of her preventive care philosophy rather than being salesy or pushy (which other dentists I’ve seen have often seemed). Knowing that she is that proactive, I take what she recommends with a grain of salt and don’t necessarily do everything or do it as quickly as she suggests, but I think that balances things out and it works in the end.
Bottom line, Dr. Shin provides really top notch dental care for those who really care about their teeth.

Fabulous dentist. I have been to four dentists in the three years I have lived in NYC and never been satisfied. Her office looks like it has been designed by Steve Jobs. She gave me the most complete explanation of my dental health ever with detailed photographic explanations of some minor work to do. I have never felt so well informed leaving a dentist. Her office staff is about as impressive as I’ve encountered. They understood my insurance perfectly and explained everything to me, even things that I didn’t need so that I would know. 5 star visit.

I feel badly that is’t taken me this long to write Doc a review. She is wonderful! I can be a difficult patient because I like to treat any condition conservatively and give thing a chance to heal on their own before resorting to drastic measures. She is patient with me and lets me do my thing while she just handles the cleaning part of my oral care.
I have had two partial (not deep) cavities heal with a mineral toothpaste. In all of my years of having a massive sweet-​tooth, I have only had one cavity filled and in retrospect I wish I’d not had that one drilled because it wasn’t painful and didn’t go through to the pulp. I’m sure I could have healed it with mineral treatments as I have since healed the others.
Dr Shin has never been too pushy about selling me procedures and I appreciate that.

I have been looking for a good Dentist for a while. After researching for a while, I landed at Dr Shin’s clinic. I just got back from her clinic and I m super excited to write good reviews about her. I would like to focus on the key points:
1) Her clinic is clean and friendly.
2) She did the cleaning not her assistant. Usually, my experience with prior Dentist, the doctors would do the examination and leave it to their assistant for cleaning.
3) She has modern technology equipments for examination.
4)She was very thorough and meticulous. No pain at all.
5) Advised me to switch to SONIC tooth brush, I asked her couple of questions the reason for recommendation, what tooth brush she use etc and her answers were not fake, the reasons she gave were valid coz i did the research afterwards
6) She diplomatically agreed health insurance is a scam which means she understands your situation and is very accommodating.
I know she has been getting good reviews and getting appointments with her will be a pain but she deserve the accolade :) … Not to forget Alison is amazing!

Dental Angel is probably the best way to describe Dr. Shin. She is very thorough and professional, walks you through all the work that is being done, and why it’s necessary. The office is always immaculate, all the equipment is modern (digital x-​ray, 360 panorama x-​ray, sonic cleaning, flat screen displays, etc…), staff is very friendly.
Had a root canal a few months ago and didn’t hurt a bit, was able to go back to work and still put in the normal 12 hour day afterward. I also had to have a crown replaced, I think Dr. Shin spent at least 15 minutes color matching my crown to make sure it wouldn’t standout from the rest of my teeth, and when the crown came in missed part of her lunch to make sure the fit was perfect when I bit down.
Dr. Shin is not a low budget dentist, so much like everything else in NY, you get what you pay for! In this case an amazing dentist who will absolutely go out of her way to ensure your teeth are taken care of for life.

i love dr. shin! if she wasn’t already married, and if i didnt like men, i’d totally marry her! one of my best friends recommended that i see dr. shin after a series of bad dentist experiences in ny. boy, am i glad i took her advice. i knew the moment i stepped through her office door that i was in love. the receptionists are always super nice, as well as the assistants and hygienists.
the office itself is super modern and clean. when they bring you to the examination room, they ask you what kind of music you want to listen to and they’ll play it on pandora.
i think i can provide a pretty detailed review b/​c i had a lot of work done with dr. shin. i mean, a lot. i was in law school for 3 years and had my teeth cleaned once during that time (don’t judge me! i was a poor student with no dental insurance). also, i guess i should mentioned that i didnt floss often… i was young and lazy. as a result, i had to get a few cavities filled and deep gum cleaning. i scheduled several follow up appointments to get my teeth fixed. everything worked out and i got to keep all my teeth! although the deep cleaning required anesthesia and 2 visits, the hygienist did a great job and it was relatively painless. also, they let me listen to my ipod when i’m getting work done. that’s really helpful to reduce any drilling noises.
oh, and one great thing about dr. shin is that she does your semi annual cleanings herself. when was the last time you had the actual dentist clean your teeth, instead of just checking it afterwards?
even though i’ve moved to san diego, i’ve been able to manage to still come see dr. shin every 6 months (work travel). i know that it will be a sad day when when i have to say my final farewell to dr. shin :(dr. shin, will you please move to san diego?

Dr. Shin’s office is beautiful, meticulous, and well thought out. The hygienist will play your favorite music on pandora, there’s a monitor so you can see what is happening in your mouth, and everyone here is young and beautiful.
However, all of the gorgeous additions must come at a price.
Dr. Shin saw me as a new patient last summer. I am meticulous about my health. I see the dentist every 6 months, I get a physical up once a year, I floss, and I am up to date on my medical history and vision prescription. When I saw her, I described why I was looking for a new dentist (my insurance was a pain), my past history, and settled in for a cleaning. I usually walk away with a clean report card, and occasionally a replacement filling. After a thorough cleaning by Dr. Shin (and not a hygienist, so +1 for that), she prescribed me:
1) a replacement filling
2) a $ 600 mouth guard
3) additional fees to be paid because my insurance didn’t cover everything, although the front desk said it did.
The facts didn’t add up. 1) My filling was replaced a year ago, yet she told me it was cracked and half was missing. (She showed it to me on the screen, but its a white filling — I couldn’t tell anything was amiss and I didn’t feel anything break recently. But even if it was broken, if it wasn’t bothering me wouldn’t replacing it cause more damage to the tooth?) 2) I have an invisalign retainer that I wear religiously every night — how would I damage my teeth when I already have something taking the stress off them? And there is virtually no wear on my retainers, which are molded for my teeth. Why would I need a new mouth guard, and why are you charging me $ 200 more than my orthodontist would? I called my orthodontist afterward, who confirmed my suspicions and further described his methodology. (Thank you Dr. Hung.
) 3) You’re supposed to notify me up front if my insurance doesn’t cover everything. I’ll pay it (you already did the work) but I’m not staying since that’s why I switched dentists in the first place. (To add half a star, the receptionist was very accommodating to some x-​ray issues I had and helping me sort out things with my previous dentist.)
I just returned from my new dentist with another clean bill of health. I did not need to replace the filling Dr Shin suggested. I didn’t have stress marks on my teeth. And I walked out of there without spending a dime. Take her advice with a grain of salt. Or a $ 600 bag of it. Also know that the Unilocal filter (at the bottom of the page) has eliminated a good number of the negative reviews, thus inflating her Unilocal rating.
EDIT: And per her response back to me, she posts a picture of my molar as one of her Unilocal photos to refute my complaint. Which is a violation of HIPPA Privacy Rights. Hmm.

I am a 31 year old guy and this is the best dentist experience I’ve ever had.
Right away I noticed how the waiting area is stylish and clean. I was warmly greeted by Madeline and Nina. I filled out paperwork while watching tv on the flat panel tv in the waiting room. I noticed that the last question on the new patient questionaire asked me what my favorite song or musical artist is. I found that odd.
After Kelly took me to get X rays on the most high tech dental X ray machine I have ever seen, I sat down in the dentists chair and found out why the music question was relevant. They had pandora streaming to a tv screen hovering in front of me and it was playing a personalized music playlist based on my favorite song/​musician. It was a cool, personal touch and getting my teeth cleaned was much more fun while listening to 80s music. I kind of wish I said «NWA» or Get Low by Lil Jon just to see if they would play it.
By the way, the view from the dentist chair is really nice, especially on a sunny day like today. I couldn’t stop staring down 40^th street at the Hudson River as The Cure and U2 played in the background.
Anyhow, Dr. Shin had a lot of neat gadgets I’ve never seen before. She used a special camera to take pictures inside my mouth. She showed me the pictures on a monitor in the room to explain to me what was going on with my teeth. She used a hydro sonic dental pick to clean my teeth, which is much more preferable to the metal scraper thingy.
Dr. Shin is really nice and approachable. She has a very warm personality. She took the time to show and explain things to me that none of my other dentists ever did.

I had this dentist for 2 years (2008 – 2010). I did cleaning, xrays, fillings, scaling and root planning.
Dr. Shin: 4.5 stars /​Dr. Ziar: 4.5 stars /​Admin (front desk): 1 star
Waiting area: really nice and clean. It felt warm and welcoming, not like a typical cookie cutter dentist waiting room.
Patient room: very high tech — you can listen to Pandora via a small TV and there’s equipment that allows you to view the inside of your mouth live on a big screen.
Dr. Shin: exceptionally nice and friendly; remembers me every time, very much easy to talk to, answers all of my questions in detail. And this is consistent every time I visit! She’s genuinely caring about my teeth, gums, and overall health. Plus, she does really great work!
Dr. Ziar: nice and friendly guy; resolved issues with my gums.
Admin (front desk): the worst of my experiences! Dealing with insurance and coverage is such a pain! Before every procedure, I often ask for estimates and procedure codes. Estimates usually are off from the actual bill, more often, it’s significantly more. The reasons she gave were: «extra necessary filling work», «an additional exam because of my dental history — a scaling exam v. a standard exam», or «extra xrays that had to be taken». Getting procedure code is like pulling hair! The admin told me they usually don’t give out codes, even after my insurance told me a dentist typically should.
There just doesn’t seem to be a consideration for the extra work/​charges for the patient. And everything is dealt with after-​the-​fact. What’s worse, when I ask her, her responses aren’t accommodating, and more «well, that’s just the way it is».
Overall: work/​service is great, doctors are great, but be WARNED and CAREFUL when dealing with estimates and charges on your bill.
UPDATE (March 2011): when I transferred my dental records to my new dentist (which went smoothly), the admin whom I always dealt with seems to have left. If she is no longer there, I would be EXTREMELY relieved!

I’ve had great experiences with Dr. Shin! This includes my general check-​up/​cleaning and fillings. She’s great at putting patients at ease and really did a wonderful job replacing my old broken fillings with new ones. She takes pictures before, during, and after so you can see the work being done. I actually called my fillings ‘pretty’ when she showed me the after photos because she did such a perfect job.
I highly recommend Dr. Shin. Her office is clean, modern, and has a zen relaxing vibe. I love it and am so glad I found a great dentist in NYC.

Having had an unscrupulous family dentist who had done his best to ruin my teeth when I was younger, I knew I would make as sure as possible to find the best possible dentist I can to reconstruct my teeth and smile.
After listening and reading up on my options, I landed in Dr. Shin’s office a few months back– and, boy, did I make the right choice.
I never thought I’d leave a dentist’s chair in such high spirits. But this is exactly how Dr. Shin’s office operates. From day one, everyone in the office is focused on making the patient’s experience as pleasant and minimally painful/​invasive as possible. They’re insistent on letting the patient know exactly what their thought process is, the reasons, and whatever options may exist.
Above all, it’s so crystal clear that Dr. Shin is not only amongst the elite dentists in the city, but that she genuinely loves what she does.
Her office’s location, setting, equipment, etc is all top-​notch; she’s clearly insistent on getting the best technology currently out there. It’s difficult to articulate just how positive my experience– at a dentist’s office of all places!- has been with Dr. Shin and her staff without sounding too over-​the-​top. But her practice is really that good. She’s truly one of the best dentists in the city, without any doubt.

Reasons why my review about Dr. Shin should matter to fellow Unilocalers:
1. For the span of about a year, I went into Dr. Shin’s office at least once a month. **
2. I had everything from a minor teeth cleaning to a major tooth removal/​implant placement procedure done with her and her staff.
3. I have terrible teeth (by genetics– the Irish genes, to be exact– not because I don’t brush. Ew.)
Things I love about Dr. Shin and her office:
1. She plays the Food Network in her patient rooms.
2. Her sweet demeanor and totally normal and pleasant personality.
3. She didn’t shame me for not flossing enough (although I’m sure she wanted to).
4. Her office gal Allison is ahhh-​mazing, especially in situations of panic (i.e. getting the bill after a tooth extraction only to realize I did not have enough money in my bank account to pay).
After every appointment, Allison gives you a breakdown of what Dr. Shin did, what you have coming up in your dental plan (which for me was a lot) and if insurance will cover the procedure. I don’t know any physicians offices so on top of their game when it comes to breaking down insurance plans in way that you can understand. Not only that, they didn’t pressure me to get any of the «extras» that would probably help my teeth out but weren’t totally necessary. Allison sends appointment reminders via email and Dr. Shin is very quick for routine cleanings so it’s easy to go during your lunch break.
Also, not that I’m a complete idiot, but when it comes to medicine, I typically just shrug and nod when a doctor talks to me. Dr. Shin told me what was going on with my teeth in a way that was easily comprehensible and not overwhelming. As long as I live in NY and my dental plan will cover it, I plan on going to Dr. Shin. It also doesn’t hurt that she’s a really cool, totally down to earth person and easy to talk to.

** For the record, I take GREAT care of my teeth however for several years, I went to a dentist who did not practice preventative care, like Dr. Shin does. His philosophy was more along the lines of «let’s wait ’til your teeth are rotting out of your head and we’ll do something about it.» So yeah… pretty glad I went to Dr. Shin when I did or I might be in dentures right now.

My teeth are horrible so I’ve spent a LOT of time with Dr. Shin. She is skilled. I feel very comfortable with her and only get uncomfortable when she’s drilling because hey it’s not that fun, but she is so calm and sweet that it’s as comfortable as a cavity filling can possibly be. Once I was in tooth pain and upstate but she waited at the office until I could show up. (She doesn’t do the root canals, but this totally cute endodontist does.) I made a CD that she plays when I go in to see her, she commiserated with me over the behavior of my ex, we talk about brunch places… easily the best relationship I have ever had with a doctor. I can’t say enough good things.
But, I don’t have dental insurance and she is amazingly, terribly expensive (I’m talking $ 400 and change for a cleaning and x-​rays). Oh but it’s amazingly affordable for my friends with insurance.
