This little studio room is located on the second floor of an otherwise plain gray building with Chinese letters and 118 – 122 Baxter St embossed next to the door. I was actually surprised there even was a dance studio given its location in the midst of Chinatown and Little Italy. An elderly gentlemen sits at the entrance but doesn’t really seem to do much except watch people walk past him up the stairs or take the elevator. The studio itself is in fair condition with bench style seating around the room and a full wall mirror immediately to the right of the doorway which I would say is the front of the class. About 5 — 6 small fans line the back wall to give some air flow to a room that can heat up pretty quickly during classes and possibly in the hotter summer months. This place also has disco color light panels that come on to give it a slight disco feel to the room. I say this place can fit roughly 20 people comfortably. According to the various posters in the highway they hold various dancing classes like ballot and Zumba. I haven’t tried any other classes here except on Sunday @ 11AM for the one hour Zumba jam with the rocking Mademoiselle of Zumba — Fiona Qian Wu. She always brings a lot of energy to her almost hip hop latin dance styles and her routines are definitely wild. I find myself drenched with sweat at the end of every class just trying to keep up! Definitely loving it though and she’s very engaging and mingles with the students during her routines which makes for a lot of fun. This class she teaches here is close to my place and only $ 10 compared to other classes that require a gym membership. Advice to anybody who starts in her class, dress light, bring water, and be prepared to sweat! I know I didn’t get her routines the first time but with my other Zumba classes it just takes practice and coming back for more. =D So in short, studio itself is so-so but the Zumba class is awesome! I wish I could try her other classes during the week at her other locations but I’m only in NYC on weekends.
