History

Established in 2007.

Dr. Jonathan Stieber was educated at Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. After completing an orthopaedic surgery residency at Monmouth Medical Center, Dr. Stieber completed specialized fellowship training in spine surgery at New York University Medical Center and the Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Dr. Stieber maintains a private-​academic practice and is both an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU School of Medicine. In this capacity, he lectures and instructs medical students, residents, and fellows. He has published numerous peer-​reviewed papers and has presented his research both nationally and internationally. He is the author of multiple chapters on surgery of the spine.

Was really impressed with my experience with Dr Stieber. Too often surgeons recommend surgery as an immediate fix to a problem, but he is the opposite. I became his patient due to chance when I ruptured a disk and was in extreme pain. He was the surgeon who conducted my surgery with barely any scar and immediate relief of the pain. Also, he has great bedside manner and actual personality so it’s easy to speak with him openly.
A few months after surgery I had another issue in my back which had me freaking out — I thought I needed surgery again and my wedding was only 5 weeks away. Dr Stieber saw me immediately, helped assess the issue, and assured me I wouldn’t need surgery again. How often does a surgeon tell you that you don’t need surgery?
His office staff is very professional but friendly and on their A Game which I also appreciate. They reflect him as a physician.
The only reason why I would consider knocking off a star is because appointments last about 2 minutes maximum, but unfortunately that seems to be the way of the world nowadays.

I’m actually pretty shocked to read so many positive results for Dr. Stieber. Not because I found him to be a terrible doctor – I’m sure he’s a brilliant orthopedic surgeon – but because I feel that, after two visits to the office, I still can’t make an accurate judgement call. Between the two visits, Dr. Stieber probably spent a maximum of 35 seconds diagnosing, explaining my condition, and recommending the appropriate course of action.
After reading all of these reviews highlighting his clinical empathy and ability to make patients feel at ease, I am forced to think either that 1) this ‘caring’ kicks in once you become a surgical patient, 2) that he’s done this so many times that he is simply on autopilot at this point, or that 3) some outward characteristic (s) of mine led him to believe that I was uninterested in or incapable of understanding an explanation of my injury.
So ultimately, if you are searching for an accomplished orthopedic surgeon in NYC, I’m sure he’s great. But if it is important to you that your doctor is also someone who manages to empower you about what is most likely a condition or injury that causes substantial stress and discomfort in your life, he is, in my opinion, not the one.

I have never felt the need to write a followup review but in Dr. Stiebers case, I have to. He is an amazing doctor, he gives as much time as you need during appts, gives you honest clear information and in general you makes you feel as though he really does care about your well being, which I honestly believe he really does care how his patients feel. I have also had the chance to speak to other doctors in NYC (I work around a lot of Doctors) and he is highly regarded among his peers, they all say they would go to him if they needed a spine guy, that tells you a lot.
I can not say enough positive things about Dr. Stieber. In today’s world were you are lucky to get 5 mins with a doctor, Dr. Stieber is a refreshing change.
His office staff is also amazing, surprised to read a review saying otherwise. Both Jen and Nancy have been kind, helpful and have gone above what is required of them.
If you are having issues with your back you are in very qualified and kind hands here.

Over a month ago Dr. Stieber operated on my back. He is simply amazing. And the brilliant care is reflected in his entire office staff. They are professional and caring in ways I had not experienced before. From the way they handle patients in the office to their quick responses to phone calls, they made me feel that my recovery was truly important to them.
I had been suffering from sciatica for 2 years when I went to see Dr. Stieber. Surgery was my last resort and I was very frightened about having any procedure on my back. Dr. Stieber’s website with its simple instructional videos calmed my fears. But it was Dr. Stieber’s clear and kind way of explaining what he would do that ultimately put me at ease.
Five weeks ago one morning at 6am I walked into St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital’s ambulatory surgery center to have my procedure — a microdiscectomy at L4-​L5 to remove the cyst that was pressing on my sciatic nerve. That afternoon at 2 pm I left the hospital after the surgery and walked seven blocks to my home pain free.
I followed Dr. Stieber’s aftercare procedure to the letter and today I am a new person, pain free and truly grateful to Dr. Stieber and his amazing team. Thank you so much.

Dr. Stieber saved my back and ended my leg pain. I have had an L5-​S1 disk hernia for a couple of years and it was being treated by PT for that amount of time. A few weeks ago the PT started to become less effective. Then on Sunday night all hell broke in my back. I couldn’t stand, I couldn’t sit, I couldn’t lie down. I could only lie down face forward. I was on all sorts of drugs for the pain. dilaudid was the only one that had any impact.
I went to Dr. Stieber’s office at St. Lukes Roosevelt and he had me admitted. I had an MRI within a couple of hours, and we scheduled the procedure for the next afternoon.
Dr. Stieber performed the procedure flawlessly, painlessly, and with extreme precision. I was out of the OR and in recovery within two hours, by about 6:00pm that night.
I was able to stand and walk that night. By 9:00pm I was back in my room, and I hadn’t felt as good in two years. Dr. Stieber was amazing. Simply the best. He saved my back, and I’m well on my way to recovery.

Dr. Stieber is knowledgable, nice and careful; which are the characteristics I look for. He has consistently suggested alternate treatment before resorting to surgery and has been willing to go the extra mile to make referrals where needed. I would highly recommend him to my friends (and have).

Well the Dr had my last review removed says it was not first hand well he still has not corrected MY paper work after I called and emailed them, He is still billing the wrong insurance company so how is this not first hand Unilocal.He still also recommended way to much surgery when all I really need is Strength building.
