Kiehl’s Since 1851

I had the most wonderful experience here. I came in and told the salespeople about my struggle to find a skin régime that didn’t cause my face to freak out. (Even the honest beauty stuff caused searing pain). I told them I was hesitant to blow 150 bucks or more on a whole régime when I’m not sure what will cause the reaction. The worker was so understanding and loaded me up with three full options of skincare in sample size so I could try each one for a week before I went back to purchase anything. So far I’ve loved every option and I’m 100% sure I will go back to buy the full set. I appreciate the workers not making me feel weird at all about only taking samples and not buying anything at the moment.

Well, this place certainly knows how to put a hole in my wallet. At least if I end up broke I’ll have some damn good skin!
I have every odd skin condition that you can think of. Even a few that you haven’t. Thankfully, acne has never been one of them — I guess God got creative with me. I’ve recently felt inclined to write a Unilocal review of Kiehl’s because I’ve recently tried a few new products from them, and they’ve been hugely successful in remedying my various maladies.
The most obvious: dark circles. I have zombie eyes. No disputing it. I won’t be offended if you say it to my face. It’s genetic, and it’s unattractive. Thanks a lot, dad. And trust me when I say I’ve tried what seems like everything, to no avail. I’ve wasted many many $$$$ trying various creams, serums, you name it. The only thing that’s done the trick is the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye. I’ve been using it for several months now and I can see noticeable differences. Kiehl’s is quite generous with their samples, so they gave me the Avocado Eye Cream to pair with Midnight Recovery Eye, which is nice but superfluous, in my opinion. If you need serious work in the occipital bone area, I suppose it’s worth a shot though (the avocado cream, I mean)! It definitely feels nourishing.
The other new product I’ve started using is the Midnight Recovery Concentrate. It comes in a small glass bottle with an eye dropper. Like most Kiehl’s products (in my experience), a little bit goes a long way. So in the end, I honestly can say that spending the extra cash is worth it. You see results and the products can last you months!
In addition, I have used the basic facial cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and baby lip balm. I’ve been using all of these products for years, and they’re tried and true. I can’t say enough good things about the products, clearly.
Lastly, just want to give a shoutout to the employees at this specific location. Both times I’ve been, they’ve proven to be knowledgeable and helpful. Yes, they will try to sell you on one of their «routines», which means buying a ton of products, but they’re not pushy about it. Personally, I don’t mind learning about the «routines” – given that I know very little about skincare and just go with what people tell me, it’s helpful to get a bit of an education on what products to use for a certain skin type, and in what order.
Also — LOTS of free samples!!! Like, lots.

I went there the day after Christmas with my father. To say my father is particular about customer service is an understatement. He was blown away how helpful and attentive Dominic was. Enough so that he thanked him and pointed out what a great job he was doing. And after a busy holiday season, my gift was still wrapped to perfection!

Kudos to the employee who procured a year’s worth of pre-​shave oil from their SF store when their store was out of it potentially until February. Above and beyond the call of duty.
Yes, for some reason their supply chain runs out of items for weeks if not months, but the employees here are very helpful and generous with the samples.

I really want to write about one thing.
I am a male. I hate that I have to moisturize, and, like stretching before working out, am a stubborn piece of shit. But, like all things, either you adapt, or you end up with flaky, dry, and itchy skin.
Anyways.
Kiehl’s Facial Fuel is by far the best facial lotion I have ever used.
Let me break it down to it’s key components, that when combined into a whole, makes this the best thing ever. Ever. (okay, maybe not ever, but can you feel the passion emanating?)
— Invigorating menthol
— Super pleasant, non-​overpowering scent
— Absolutely not greasy — SO KEY
— does not sting your eyes if you sweat a ton like other people (I) do.
So I pretty much hated using facial moisturizers because most of the stuff I have tried in the past were the opposite of above key components.
(I usually get the 4.2oz bottle that runs for $ 35)
Other honorable mentions: Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash, Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream, Creative Cream Wax (Hair)
Totally Awesome honorable mention: Ultra Facial Cleanser (The best facial cleanser I have used as far as effectiveness, but every skin type is different — it’s heavier than most cleansers (enter inception parentheses (as in viscosity, i usually add a little bit of water so I can spread it when I wash my face) end inception parentheses).

Their Amino Acid shampoo & conditioner are fantastic. Most shampoos either leave my hair flat and greasy, or clean it too well so that it’s dry and crunchy, or combine the worst of both and leave me with greasy roots and dry ends. This makes my hair soft and voluminous.
I deducted a star because of Mariana R’s review. Now I am paranoid that someone will vomit on my head when I go here. At least if that happens I will be near some nice shampoo.

We are from California and I always had a pleasant experiencie shooping at Kiehl’s stores there.
HERE is a totally diferent history!!!
I have been in this location several times and the people working here has a huge attitude and treated you like they are doing to you a big favor!
I really like Kiehl’s products so for now on I just ordering online.

their customer service could improve!

Kiehl’s makes great products for men (and women). I especially enjoy their Crème de Corps moisturizer. Most of their products are only lightly scented, never overpowering, and feel great on your skin. They can be a little pricey but the quality is outstanding.

great by some gilr that wore blue nail polish, she was so cool and knew what she was talking about, i needed a cream for my skin and under my eyes, she answered all questions amaizingly, i left so happy.

Great selection of products. Love the layout. Need more salespeople. I feel like only two people are in charge of the entire store.

I had a good experience here. We came to purchase a hostess gift and I didn’t want to spend too much money. They directed me some really nice gifts in the $ 25 range. They also gave me a few samples. Not my favorite Kiehls to shop in but it was a positive experience.

Khiels has been around for what feels like forever or 150 years according to the sign in the store. I remember seeing their products in my Grandma’s house when I was a kid and thinking they must be pretty special if she was using them. Grandma is a firm believer of «less is more» and rarely would she spend money on herself. Maybe she splurged on these products because they specialize in using natural ingredients for all their skin and haircare products.
Recently, when I was shopping for my husband for fathers day I saw this shop on Columbus Ave and immediately remembered the name from my younger days. I strolled in and was surprised to see all the products they have for both men and women. The store is filled with cleansers, scrubs, foot creams, shampoo, and sun care items as well.
I ended up purchasing my husband the Ultimate Body Scrub Soap, since his skin has been a little dry and rough lately and he refuses to use a body scrub since he thinks they are «girly» The soap claims to do the same thing as the scrub, with the only difference being it’s in a bar.
While shopping I was asked at least three times if I needed help by pleasant workers.
Overall this is a great store, with nice staff. Only downside is it’s a little bit on the pricey side. The bar of soap was $ 13.

I was excited to visit Kiehl’s to see what they had to offer. The place was basically empty but I was greeted right away by a very attractive woman who eerily resembled the late Carolyn Bessette-​Kennedy. Knowing they had a great sampling program, I asked if they had any lip balm samples. «We don’t currently have any», she answered with a smile, as she handed me a full-​sized tube, not only to try, but to TAKE.
I felt so guilty about this great ‘sample’ that I was afraid to ask for anything else! She then let me look around on my own as other customers came in. I did thank her before I left, mesmerized by how great the service was that I had had that day. I wish I would have gotten her name! I had returned a soon after & a café named ‘Mud’ (I think that was its name) was added… the same nice lady was still working but she was with several customers at that moment. I hope next time I visit, she will still be there, as they are still known for the quality of their associates as well as products.
Fast forward to 2011. Kiehl’s is now owned by L’oreal (which I don’t want to think of as a negative, but considerable changes have been made). They have been discontinuing products left & right that I have been using over the past decade. A lot of people may stereotype NYC people as being rude & curt, but I sure have yet to see anywhere else match up to the service & kindness received on this Pear Tree Corner location.

I often go to this Kiehl’s store since it is close to my gym. I have tried their hair products but was less than impressed. The hair straightening cream did nothing for my hair, which is thick, wavy, frizzy, and brunette. I had to spend at least 30 minutes with a hair straightener and yet the product did not work.
I found another product that works much better and my hair straightens faster.
I tried their face wash which is decent, but found something else that works equally well.
I am now planning to buy a range of anti-​wrinkle cream for my Dad. However, a couple of salespeople in this store do not know differences between a few products. I wish someone here was more knowledgeable about products, since there are few reviews online about anti-​aging stuff.

I love Kiehl’s products, but I usually order online. I was in the UWS the other day and decided to pop in to stock up on my usual medicine cabinet fixtures.
The place is a zoo, filled and busy. No one greeted me or said hello, which is fine, I don’t really like to be bothered anyway. But there was no prices on things and I couldn’t find one of the things I was looking for.
Finally, when I went to pay, saleslady says: «any samples you want today?» Erghhh? Freeze. Normally when ordering online you can just randomly check what you want. I was on the spot and had no idea, so I got no samples :(
It’s a fine store. I just think I’m better suited to shop online.

Originally, I just wanted to give this place 1-​star. Then, thinking back to the first experience, figured I would bump it up a little.
So I moseyed up to the UWS in search of the Kiehl’s, which was quite hard to find given the jump in numbers from Columbus St from Columbus Circle up to the 70’s. Apparently 150 is nowhere near where the Street starts to my chagrin.
Regardless, I finally made it to the oasis of what I had hoped to be my bath-​and-​body go-​to-​place. Alas, I was sadly to be proven wrong.
My first experience was ok. Went in. Sales girl asked me if I needed help with anything. My mouth was dry, my throat was parched and all I could managed was a whispered, «no, just looking.» Was going to get my mom something for mom’s day and someone had recommended Kiehl’s as quality. So looked at their shampoo section and when I finally had a question about shampoo sensitivity on some of the volumizing shampoos nobody had any clue as they hadn’t used it. Ok, fine. So I bought one to try it out to. Asked about other shampoo samples and the girl gave me some to bring home.
Second trip out a few weeks ago. Wow, from the service and attitude, who could guess that we are living in a recession where jobs are scarce? Or, at least, a time where every dollar earned means a lot more than it used to, say the same time last year.
I walk in, sales people look at me, continue chatting. Found what I wanted in the flashest-​of-​flashes since I had been there already. Felt like I was unkindly interrupting their conversation to get some service so I could checkout and get outta there. Anyway, whatevs. Didn’t get any of their samples this time, given the preciousness of their time and my un-​desire to interact any more than I have to without being made to feel like I was intruding. Thanks a lot. Considering the samples and courteousness was the foundation and flagstone of Kiehl’s marketing strategy over the past 100 years… guess they are embarking on a new strategy of elitism and cost-​savings. As will I. L’Occitaine, sorry I left ya. Didn’t mean to cheat — You shall see me soon. In the meanwhile, there’s always online shopping for other non-​immediate bath & body needs.

One day, as I was walking out of this Kiehl’s, someone in the apartment above stuck their head out of the window, right as I walked through the door. I heard a noise and looked up, only to be pleasantly surprised by a gagging noise, followed by a stream of puke which landed perfectly on my head. As I screamed and dry heaved and picked chunks out of my hair, the Kiehls employees were great. They gave me towels, a sink to clean up at, and a clean shirt to put on for my disgusting cab ride home. Thanks ladies!
The products here are great too by the way.

Not living below 14^th Street or east of 5^th, this is my Kiehl’s outpost. Not as big as the flagship, of course, but thank god they opened one over here. Even though you can get Kiehl’s at pretty much any department store these days (I think Barney’s has the best selection, though.), I like shopping from the actual store. The salespeople tend to know what they’re talking about, and I love the ladies here — they know me by now.
I’ve been a fan of Kiehl’s for years, but it’s not an across the board label for me. Their hair products are useless on my difficult locks, but I use the shaving cream, number 1 lip balm, men’s bar soap, and Eye Emergency cream (which is FANTASTIC). Occasionally I’ll pick up the Grapefruit moisturizer (light and perfect for summer) or a bottle of the clay-​based non-​foaming face wash (great for cleaning and closing sweaty pores post-​gym).
But it can’t be denied that they’ve definitely lost something since the L’Oreal take-​over. It’s tough to pin-​down, but the proof is in the pudding that I haven’t really liked any of their new products. Stick with the basics and you can’t go wrong.
