Slightly pricey, good appetizers. Meat is alright. Sushi is good. NORESERVATIONS!

I had to review again after some disappointment on this used to be my go-to Japanese place. Something must have changed here either the owner or the chef after the end of 2015. I went there just in November 2015, everything was as I was expected. I came across a few Japanese friends there, they were happy too. Then in early January 2016, things went upside down. I had my usual Agadachi Tofu, what came was crispy tofu topped with small mushrooms and«Oyster» sauce. Then, my lobster rolls was garnished with spicy«Mayo», very supermarket style. Totally wrong for authentic Japanese place. Plus when I asked one of the veteran waitresses if my Agedachi Tofu was accidentally mixed up with other order from another table, she insisted that their Agedachi Tofu has been cooked like that ever since. This is very disappointed. I am(now was) a regular. I have been going there very often since 2002. Even their green tea now served with a tea bag in hot water instead of brewed green tea. I was about to give them another try, but one of my friends who lives in the area also told me that his experience was also disappointed. So time to find another authentic place.

If there is such a thing as the Sushi Police, this establishment would be fined. Don’t mess with a good thing! I’ve been coming here for over 7 years. What makes Marumi so good is the value and quality; not to mention their spicy sashimi salad(a truly unique dish here). The price to sushi ratio is really good. Quality of fish is good(not high end but good) and they give you generous portions. That is, they used to. Sashimi slices are smaller than before. I almost want to say 25−40% smaller. Same prices if I recall. Dragon Roll with no shrimp? It’s one big piece of rice with small slices of Unagi. I don’t usually order rolls but I’m quite sure this is not a dragon roll. It’s an eel roll, passing as a dragon roll. Imposter! And, the Unagi barely made it to each side of the roll. They should had sold this as a mini-onigiri with toasted Unagi pieces on the outside. To add insult to injury, the unagi was not even toasted right. Did the Sushi Chef lose his passion for making sushi? I thought the chef may had forgotten so while sitting at the sushi bar, I watched him make another Dragon roll and it confirmed that this place is indeed cutting corners on their food. Such a heart breaker. I am under the assumption that they kept their prices the same but cut back on portions. Restaurant business can be tough. Prices almost always goes up. Salary, ingredients, rent, patience. Oy… I know all too well. Mr Marumi owns the building and lives upstairs with his family so rising rent wouldn’t be a major impact. Part of me is sympathetic and the other part of me felt robbed. As a business owner, I understand. As a frequent customer, I’m not liking it. *Their sashimi salad is still awesome though portions of fish had not been cut back as noticeable as the above.

I ordered«sushi-jou». I strongly recommend chef Mamoru’s sushi. It was amazing and reasonable. Fish were fresh. I love it. I also love«green tea ice cream with red bean souce». Try it.

Very nice ambience. The sushi and sashimi were really good. They give you nice and thick pieces of sashimi for a decent price

I love this place! Ive eaten there like twice a month and never get the same thing. Each idea on the menu from cooked to raw is amazing! The place great, service is great and the food and attention tp detail is amazing… The only bad thing is one bathroom, other than that this place is the best!!! Seriously

Well above average sushi. $ 10 for a large bottle of sake. Rolls start at $ 4. Spicy scallop roll was $ 6 and excellent. Cozy ambiance, friendly service. Great for a third date. Will be coming back often.

My partner and I visited Marumi last night for the first time together; I personally, wasn’t too impressed. I wound up ordering one of their bento box specials that included miso soup, shrimp and vegetable tempura, salmon terriyaki, shumai, three pieces of sashimi, hijiki salad and California rolls. My partner had a separate order of shrimp and vegetable tempura. The breakdown: although the food was plentiful, prices were affordable, the overall quality of food was less-than-stellar for me. Vegetables were overcooked [not as crisp; too soggy] and the tempura batter wasn’t seasoned with enough attention to taste or texture, in my opinion. The sushi and sashimi was simply okay; nothing memorable. On a positive note, Marumi had a nice, pleasing ambiance, and our hostess was kind and attentive, but for future, we’ll be avoiding Marumi when we have a hankering for Japanese. Overall, when it comes to quality over quantity, quantity is the operative here.

I like the uni tuna tartar here. And considering the price they charge, the quality of food is kinda good.

Came here around 6pm on a Wednesday so it wasn’t overly crowded and we had our choice of seating. We chose the back area which is kind of an enclosed outside area if that makes sense. Nice and quaint and private as we were the only ones there for most of our meal. Food consumed was miso soup(very tasty), spicy tuna tartar(not the best I’ve ever had but it was good and I would order it again), Rolls including eel, spicy tuna, and spicy yellowtail. The spicy yellow tail roll was to die for super delish! Finished the meal with the green tea ice cream to cleanse my pallet. For the first time, I had the red bean paste that they offer with the green tea ice cream and surprisingly it was a delicious combo. All in all nice place with good offerings.

I had a decent enough lunch at Marumi recently. I ordered several rolls. They were mostly rice. They were not bad. The waitress was attentive and kept mentioning that it was cash only during lunch. At first, I thought that was odd but realized that she was really helpful actually. We got to sit and talk. The AC was great on a hot day. It was really an average experience. There was nothing amazing, but nothing really bad at all.

This place is awesome. It’s been around forever, and is consistent, cheap, and good. There are other sushi restaurants I prefer when I feel like treating myself on occasion, but this is perfect for a causal, I’m kind of craving sushi, but don’t want to spend more than 40 bucks, kind of evening. Obviously, most people can’t afford to go to 15 East every week/month. Good variety of sushi, rolls, as well as cooked appetizers. Service is pretty solid.

another favorite: we went here several times, and it’s a traditional japanese restaurant that’s not too much expensive! They serve a lot of traditional small plates, and an amazing sushi. I always enjoy the appetizers too much, ending eating juts them(I like to try a bit of everything) and I love the watercress/spinach(depends on what they have) with the goma-ae. The aubergine was amazing too! the portion of the main plates are huge, so, it’s better if you order just an appetizer and a main plate– or eat just several appetizers like I always do: D —

Came here for dinner today. Came here too try it out the only think I love was the Uni @ squid. Order the shrimp tempera too much rice and the shrimp not even crunchy at all. Got the Ka yai was very very salty! The spicy salmon tartare was good! I guess this place good for appetizer not really rolls The service was blah.

Dropped in for the $ 11 early bird dinner special. This place is conveniently located in Greenwich Village, is clean, and has a nice ambiance, HOWEVER the sushi was downright shitty. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and Inari sushi dinner special, which included two small dumplings(decent), and a small bowl of soba noodles(decent), and THEWORSTEXCUSEFOR A RAINBOW ROLLl I have ever had the misfortune of seeing(let alone eating). Sushi at NY bodegas are a FIRSTCLASS compared to Marumi’s nonsense excuse for a Rainbow Roll. The Rainbow Roll was not a roll but rather small, roll-sized sushis(with raw fish and gross browned, mushy avocado on top). I complained about the avocado and the lack of contents on the inside of the roll, and was told by the wait staff that«this is what a Rainbow Roll looks like.» After sending it back to the chef, I received the«fixed» version(as pictured). What the waitress returned with was the original«Rainbow Roll» with the old mushy avocado scraped off, and new slabs of slightly fresher mushy avocado clumsily slapped on. To be fair, the raw fish on the rolls were relatively fresh, HOWEVER the pieces of fish were EXTREMELY small, and the rest of the roll would probably make any real sushi chef spontaneously combust from incredulity and anger. My friend got the Nabe Udon which was fine. TL;DR: If you like sushi rolls in its real authentic form, american knock-off form OR even budget NY bodega sushi, you WILLNOTLIKEMARUMISUSHIROLLS. See photos of the«fixed» Rainbow Roll.

This Japanese place is clean, warm, and overall lively. The food is all okay — not great or spectacular but certainly not bad. It isn’t pricey and in fact is arguably a good deal depending what you get but you aren’t getting anything that will change how you look at sushi or Japanese food in general. The service is a bit uneven at times. I wouldn’t call the staff unfriendly but I wouldn’t call it inviting either. They don’t rush you though. It’s a decent place to go for sushi in the neighborhood but nothing to go out of the way for.

Overall the experience was ok, nothing memorable(good or bad). I met a friend here for dinner, we ordered the Sushi Sashimi combo. I came here craving sushi and left craving sushi. It just was not anything special. Maybe I have been spoiled with the many Japanese spots I have been to but I am not a fan at all. Cannot see myself going back unless someone else invited me, because to be fair the service was good and the young woman who waited on us was very pleasant.

Sushi is something that the Boyfriend and I are always up for — it’s refreshing and nothing beats a great piece of salmon in my mind. We’re always on the lookout for affordable and trustworthy sushi places. Our most recent search led us to Marumi Sushi in the West Village. We arrived round lunch time so it was pretty packed. Luckily there were two spaces at the bar and I always love bar seats. You get to see all the chefs in action! We opted to start off with a Tuna and Uni Roll. The Boyfriend also ordered an Ikura(salmon roe) hand roll. Both rolls were very fresh and nicely done. I thoroughly enjoyed the Uni. I always want to order Uni but I’m never sure if it’s going to be fresh. The Uni at Marumi is definitely fresh and brightly colored. I could eat four of these rolls! I opted for the Salmon Don, which features various salmon sashimi(around 9 – 10 pieces) over a bed of sushi rice. It also comes with your choice of soup or salad. I opted for the salad, which was a bigger portion size than most other sushi restaurants. The salmon sashimi was so fresh! There were about three different ones and each one was more mouth-melting than the next! They give you a very big bowl of rice too so it really fills you up. Service was pretty quick and attentive. Our water glasses were almost attended to and our food arrived in a timely manner. I am definitely adding Marumi to my Sushi-Go-To List!

Delicious! We had the cucumber, avocado salmon roll, spider roll, and blackened tuna. The tuna was to die for, omg, the best piece of fish that has ever touched my tongue. The cucumber avo salmon roll was refreshing and a punch in the mouth. The venue was fairly large with a room in the back for groups. It’s near Washington Square park so that’s a plus! Come and try out their sushi because for the price($$), it’s worthy of your regular sushi stop.
