New Jersey Transit Bus Service

I normally take the train to and from the city but there was a significant reduction in service in mid-​day trains on Monday due to the holiday, and I needed more options so I opted for the bus. There were surprisingly more buses available, about one every half hour.
The ticket agent was polite and the line moved quickly enough. The driver was also friendly to the collection of regulars on the bus; it seems like it is a tightly knit bunch. However, my seat was broken and then it moved wildly during the ride when the bus made a couple of wide turns. I changed it and that seat was broken too. How is that safe? Or even legal?
Although there was the prompt at the front of the bus, I was surprised that major stops were not announced (again, I am not a regular.)
Although it was mid-​day, I got to my stop a couple of minutes late. There was a little bit of traffic due to construction (which did not factor into this review.)
This would be a decent back up for the train but I would not make this my every day to the city.

If you’re like me commuting from NJ to NY, you know the frustration with NJ Transit Bus for their unreliable service, buses are late or don’t show up at all and yet they increase the fare! I wish there is 0 rating, the latest incident is the driver of Bus 122 from Secaucus to NY was smoking inside the bus, the minute you board the bus, you smell the cigarette smoke & the driver didn’t have the brain to turn on the air until passengers ask him

New Jersey transit is very well operated. I’ve never had a problem getting to any location on time. The bus is always clean. The drivers are professional. The drivers drive safely. You don’t see them speeding, eating, reading, or talking to passengers while driving.
This past weekend at the park and ride, N.J. Transit was checking buses before they left. The employee I thanked was dressed neat and clean looking very professional. I told her I appreciate the work they do. When you take public or even private bus service you are putting your life in their hands. I’ve ridden on one private bus line to Woodbury Commons. I was frightened the whole trip. That driver was crazy. I wanted to kiss the ground when I got off the bus. I haven’t been back since. I’m afraid he is a regular driver on the route I take.
I’ve never had any frightening experiences on N.J. Transit. Even
though the price is going up, if that’s what it takes to maintain equipment, and have great drivers, then I’m all for it! I can’t put a price on my life.

I cant even give our bus system nj transit a 1 rating but I have no choice.
It is managed lik a third world country
They dont have any regard for peoples time.
Bus 231 never meets their schedule so dont depend on it or you will suffer.

I wish I could give less stars. Terrible communication. People are scrambling all over port authority. Gates changes you walk across the whole opposite side of where buses are leaving and are beings sent to gates that are closed At this time. Worse and getting worse at higher fares.

If I’m late the bus will leave without me and I miss the bus. If the bus driver wants to leave ahead of schedule, I miss the bus. If the bus driver decides not to show up, I miss the bus too. Wait that’s 2 out of 3 times that NJ Transit leaves me stranded. Not fair. bus 123 left a lot of us stranded yesterday when it left the terminal ahead of schedule. We had to wait more than a half hour for the next bus. Shame on you NJ Transit.

Yesterday I used this company to get to six flags ! This was nothing but an absolute disappointment ! the people who work the gates are not informative at all! We left at 10:00 got in the park by 12:50… While purchasing the ticket no one at the window advised me to buy a flash pass, or scare pass, which ruined our experience ! we were treated like cattle just dropped off at some park we couldn’t participate in most of the Halloween activities ! Online we were told to be back at 9:00pm for the ride back to NYC ! However while departing from the bus; the bus driver said to be back at 8:00 I wish I had this mans name to write down here … He said we could leave whatever on the bus and not to worry ! Well we left the park at 7:40 to make sure we boarded at 8:00 even if we were disappointed we didn’t want to be left ! Totally different bus, different driver, and we boarded at 9:45 !!! We would of loved to stay in the park another hour and a half !!! good thing we didn’t leave anything on this bus cause it wasn’t the same bus nor driver !!! The new bus driver didn’t want to hear any of our complaints and blamed it on the n. j transit supervisor who was parked along side is letting us know when we may leave ! That’s why I say cattle ! No one was on the same page BIG MISUNDERSTANDING OR MISCOMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE PARK THE TRANSIT AUTHORITY AND CUSTOMERS — — NEVER AGAIN

Ticket window agents are rude and are not helpful. They all act like they hate their jobs and people.

Waiting for Bus #192 at Target that never showed up. This happens on so many runs. When I called customer service to complain the service agent put me on hold for a few minutes and when she returned she informed me that the bus is running late and would arrive in twenty nine minutes. I told her the next regular scheduled #192 bus arrives then but she said oh no it is the earlier one that is running late.
What a load of crap just admit you didn’t have a driver to drive the route.
Soon I have to pay a higher fare for this non-​service.

I have taken NJ transit buses before but last year in particular was trying to get to EDC at Met Life and geez, was too crowded. All the sponsored buses and trains had lines out the door. Decide to go local and old school took the x160 from port authority and on a Saturday it went from NY to East Rutherford in decent time. Chartered buses must have been 5 or 7 bucks but with 1hr or 2hr lines just to get one, this local bus was $ 3.20 or around there. First stop was Union city, then we hit mad traffic then next stop was E.R. and the Meadowlands Sports Complex. The 10 or so other colorful people riding the local bus going to Electric Daisy Carnival had a good time. After this, the bus continues on to East Rutherford Locusts and Patterson Ave., then eventually Garfield and Outwater Lane.

This is some BS. We’ve tried to take buses to get to hikes and both times not great luck. The first time it was 30 minutes late with no explanation. The second time the 30 minute past due time rolled around again and we were told the bus had «broken down» and they didn’t know when another one would be available. Considering we had an hour and half ride ahead of us, and places to be, this was beyond inconvenient. The only reason they got a 2^nd star is because I was amazed that when we took the bus back the first time, in Alpine NJ, it actually did stop at a barely marked stop in the middle of nowhere and picked us up. Totally figured we would be stranded. Still.. . get it together!

NJ Transit bus route 87 to Hoboken is the most inconsistent and unreliable service. It rarely comes when it should, it’s late and when it arrives 2 – 3 more buses directly follow it. So you wait 30 mins to see 3 busses at once. It makes no sense. I’ve also watched drivers fly past other bus stops with plenty of seats while people are waving their arms for it to stop along Palisade Ave. Earlier today I watched 2 buses within minutes of each other at my bus stop from a block away. I missed the second one due to ice and snow and crossing Central Ave. I guess the drivers don’t check their rear view mirrors or they would have seen me running and waving. It pulled away right as I reached the door. Very frustrating after you see 2 busses go by in the same 5 minutes. So I walked all the way down to Hoboken. I hope to someday see a gps phone app system much like über where you can see where the bus is at. Unfortunately most of us cannot afford to take a cab everyday.

The bus was suppose to be here at 4:15pm but it’s already 10 mins late and people have no idea which door to enter from. The door says one but the bus stops at another door. People are very confused. But as long as it will take us to where we want to go then there aren’t much to complain.

These buses moves most of the time — that is the best part but I can’t say that everything else works consistently over the years. There are plenty of broken seats, not functioning bell, and I once got slammed by the door getting onto the bus (the driver did not realize I was there — last one in the line and closed the door when I was standing there). I actually had to go to the doctor as I had a badly jammed finger from that incident. I think that they should really look into the light rail line into the Bergen county as the buses are not really cutting it during the rush hours.

We live within walking distance of an NJ Transit stop for buses into New York, Jersey City, and Newark, and I find the idea of paying over $ 25 in tolls, plus gas and parking rather less than appealing, not to mention the thought of sitting in stop and go traffic, so the bus at the cost of tolls alone is a no-​brainer.
Service is good; buses are usually more or less on time even with the madness of NJ traffic and the buses are pretty well maintained and clean, although their cleanliness is in inverse proportion to the total riders boarded. The quality of your ride, however, is almost wholly dependent upon your fellow passengers. If lucky, your companions will be quiet and childless, and lack the compulsion to phone all of their acquaintances to let them know that they are on the bus. If not traveling alone, they will also be cognizant of the difference between «indoor» and «outdoor» voices. Otherwise, I wish you luck. Anything could happen.
Regardless of the day and time, buses tend to be crowded and often only standing room is available at the later stops. There is a real need for more buses, more frequently.

In the summertime, I ride NJT buses on weekends between the southern-​New Jersey shore points and New York.
Its not that bad, folks. Lengthy trips of course but the arrival/​departure times are good enough.
The quality of any bus ride (I feel) largely depends on the passengers. Southern Jersey has way better people than New York, that’s for certain. Shore people; nice tanned little mommy’s girls going off to study at NYU; surfer-​kids; sandy-​haired rowers; that sort.
Anyway. On the longest leg of the trip back (I recall) one time where the driver generously pulled over at a rest stop so everyone could drain their lizards and get a snack. Including the big man himself. He was firm about it too. CLEARLY (over the loudspeaker) warning us that he g’wan «leave yo ass if you aint back on time! Don’t think I won’t! If you think I’m playin wit y’all, you WILL be left!»
The buses arrive (of course) at Port Authority – swerving around those interior ramps up to the 2^nd or 3^rd floor of that garage. Finding your way out of the building is complicated but you master it after a couple tries. Signage is the main issue.
And another good experience: one time I lost my cell phone on one of these trips and the driver was nice enough to snag it for me… after lengthy coordination with NJT to discover the driver’s name; I met him a few trips later in Port Authority on a later and he cheerfully returned it to me. I tipped him like, $ 50.
Keep an open mind. This is not the notorious NJT train service.
