Oshman & Barteck Physical Therapy

I have been to 4 different NYC businesses since 2006, all offering physical therapy– some were quite good. Nothing else compares to Mr. Barteck and his staff of dedicated professionals. The compassion and detailed, individualized service provided to every person in that clinic puts them in the top 1% of physcial therapy providers in NYC. I would have had to give up my own profession of 30 years had I continued with a previous phyz therapy group.

I went there after IT band pain from training for a half marathon. You’ll notice on their website they emphasize running form. Apparently, they think correct running form is the cure-​all for every person’s running injury. They told me fixing the form is a process that would take months or even years (and insisted that is the only fix for my problem). I tried to follow their running form regimen, but finally I dropped out of the half marathon and quit running. I still had periodic knee pain despite this (kind of suggests it’s not all about my running form…).
After going to a different PT, I found out that IT band problems are more directly caused by hip weakness, and they are working on my hip weakness, something not even suggested by the people at Oshman-​Barteck.

I have just completed extensive phyical therapy for an arthritic hip and will absolutely miss the extraordinary treatment I have received for the last 3 months. The support staff is extremely professional, emphatetic and encouraging. The intake process as well as the scheduling of appointments was seamless and stress free.
The therapists are phenomenal. They clearly have exceptional professional skills but also have the ability to demonstrate compassion and offer encouragement and hope which are critical when dealing with persons in pain and uncertain about the possibility of recovery.
I strongly recommend use of this company.

I’ve had chronic lower back pain for several years and have been to acupuncture, sports medicine, chiropractors, rolfing… you name it, I’ve probably tried it. The last chiropractor I went to actually made the pain MUCH worse.
After seeing Steven Barteck for just a few months, the lower back pain is gone. Really gone. Not just for an hour after the session, not just for a few days. I’ve been pain free for several weeks now. He has a holistic approach that takes into account everything from what I do all day to how I sat on my sofa at home. He provides exercises matching my level of fitness, as well as a list of things to avoid. I have recommended him to all my friends and colleagues who need someone who knows what they’re doing.
Each session is mostly hands on body work and give him my highest recommendation. The vibe at Steven’s is laid back, friendly, nurturing and caring.

I have known Steven Barteck for 8 years. I am an avid marathon runner and soccer player and I get injured a lot (several knee and shoulder surgeries, all soccer related).
Steven is my go-​to guy. He knows what he is doing, makes you do exercises that are fun and tailored to the activity you want to do, is friendly and always on time. I like in particular that he is hands on, does not let you slack unless you need it, and he tells you straight up what is the problem and how to fix it.
Steven greatly helped me recover from a badly damaged medial collateral ligament. It has been seven weeks since my accident, and I am already running around with a knee that feels good.
I will probably get injured again at some point, and it is great to know that Steven will be there to help me get going.

This was wholly unsatisfying — and beyond bizarre.
Where to begin? I waited patiently while patients who arrived after me were seen before me. As I was waiting I listened to two employees discuss meetings with contractors for a home improvement project. Twenty minutes after my scheduled time, I realized that one of those employees was my physical therapist.
This is where it gets even stranger — and I’m not how to say this, but my therapist, Barteck, was, well… a douche. Perhaps my standard for bedside manner is high, as my previous physical therapists have been particularly wonderful. But then again, physical therapy can be vulnerable — it involves being half naked while a stranger is manipulating your body — there should be a minimum level of decorum.
While being worked on, I was subject to strange and bizarre insults of my physique, my profession, my income, and my ethnicity. It was a series of surreal «Did he just say that?» moments. I should have just left, but was caught off guard completely. I didn’t expect my physical therapist to be an asshole.
Maybe the other therapists are less abrasive. I’m certainly not going back to find out.

I broke my ankle playing soccer in August and had surgery shortly after. I went to Steven Barteck for my recovery because he had really good online reviews and was located near my office. It is now February and I am already back to running. I would say that Steven did a great job aiding my recovery and got me back on my feet (literally). My appointments always ran on time and Steven was very flexible with his schedule to make sure I was seen. I am very pleased with my progress and I’m poised to make a full recovery.

Steve really knows his stuff. I’ve been to many PTs and he’s the only one that fixed my ankle — I left pain free!

After breaking my ankle in January by falling on the ice, I was finally ready to begin PT in April. Today was my last session. My experience with Steve Barteck and Brandon was excellent in every respect. (I broke the same ankle 25 years ago and my PT experience then was shorter and easier. Aging is a real kick in the pants.) In any case, Steve evaluated my status and let Brandon treat me thereafter — he was great! He has infinite patience (I ask a ton of questions) and even made some of my exercises fun, or at least fun to watch. (I’ve been told I should not consider soccer as my next career move.)
My primary concern was pain, of course, but also my gait was completely off as was my balance. Both of those things have improved dramatically: I no longer limp and the pain is almost completely gone. I have a number of exercises that I have been doing at home since therapy began and as it progressed, the difficulty of the exercises increased; I plan to continue with them in the hope of making even more progress with balance and strength.
The office is pretty low-​key and all the other staff members were always a pleasure to deal with. I was searching for a place close to my office and Oshman & Barteck was suggested to me by my health insurance company. My lucky day!

Steve Barteck came highly recommended to me. A few of my office mates had used him previously and have raved about him. He gives great advice, including what to wear on my feet while they’re healing, how to work out, how much to work out what to expect, what to do at home to help myself. Their entire staff is super friendly, very accommodating, and professional! They also have an icy cold therapeutic hot tub that I look forward to at the end of their sessions which always leaves me feeling like a new person. They are conveniently located in the theatre district, so I can go on my lunch hour! I will be returning and sending more of my friends and co-​workers there. I have been to other places, and this place is as good as physical therapy gets.

These folks are great. They really know their stuff and are also friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend them. Also, if you are in the NYC entertainment industry, they couldn’t be more conveniently located.

Went here for a few months due to some shoulder problems. I had a real good experience here, everyone was friendly and knowledgeable and had me back at 100% in no time.
I would definitely go back.

I don’t know a lot about PT, but my experience at this place was excellent! The staff and therapists are SUPER friendly and it’s very easy to book your appointments. Plus they dealt with the insurance once I ran out of allowed sessions and got me 12 sessions more. I feel there’s a lot of bogus physical therapy places out there, and this one is NOT one of them! I recommend.

Very friendly, Stephen has treated both my kids and we’re very pleased to recommend.
A huge plus is the fact that they also accept insurance so with my Cigna plan the cost is only the co insurance.

Steven Barteck helped me a great deal in my recovery from arthroscopic ankle surgery. We did a lot of fun exercises — like kicking a soccer ball back and forth while balancing on one foot on top of a squishy thing that made it hard to balance on one foot — and he devoted a lot of personal time to me, which I think is rare for someone as experienced as he is. Therapists at other PT centers I have been to juggled several patients at a time. Steven also has a lot of knowledge and passion for sports, especially soccer, tennis and skiing (those are the things we talked about most). Overall, it was a really positive experience. I got a lot of encouragement in general, and he gave me a routine at home that hopefully will help me continue to improve.

Let’s face it. When you are injured and in serious pain, you want relief from a healthcare practitioner that really cares. Steve Barteck is the consummate caring professional with a wonderful staff that will work tirelessly to provide solutions for your problem. New York is fortunate to have such a wonderful therapist.
