Best hole in the wall in NYC. Above average sushi at low price because of shoddy interior. Go for quick bite or delivery. Great for students.

I find it funny that all the picky-yet-indebted Manhattanites are complaining about this place. No, it was not five star sushi but waaaaa waa that is what you get for a bento box dinner for under ten dollars and cheap sushi. If you want a place to fulfill your ambrosial tastes and foods which combine to balance your ever-so-delicate palette there are plenty of other restaurants where you can empty your wallet. This was the perfect place for those on a budget. The bento box was especially good, as long as you don’t come during rush hour. Now I wish I went here more often.

This is for delivery. There’s only one reason to go to Oyama, and that’s for dirt-cheap sushi at borough prices. Do not order anything else. I confirmed this by foolishly ordering noodle soups, which came in a reasonable amount of time but were total mush. I doubt it tastes much better on location.

I can’t say that the décor is that nice. This place feels like the equivalent of a Japanese cheap diner. Nonetheless the food is satisfying, yummy and cheap and is a great spot to stop in for a simple, affordable meal.

Another very mediocre place. I ordered delivery and my rolls were made really sloppy. The spicy salmon looked like it almost fell out of the roll. It was really squishy. Did not like it at all. Fish wasn’t fresh. One of the worst sushi place I ever tasted. Btw the 50% on the menu isn’t really 50%. They just jack up the price and say it is 50%. I don’t think it cost $ 8 or $ 7 dollars for a spicy salmon and California roll. I had way better sushi.

I came here as a last ditch effort to save my night I was supposed to go to another sushi bar but it was so crowded and I was starving so I settled for this place. The décor is nice and it has a nice feeling to it however the waitress took forever taking our order. The plum wine was sweet and delicious. I ordered a 2 person sushi entrée and I was disappointed with the appearance. I have never seen a sushi platter that looked like it was going to fall apart when you pick it up. Which is exactly what kept happening. So I was pretty unimpressed with this place.

Great food, I am a regular customer. The environment is very friendly. This is a Chinese owned business.

Good place. Will be coming again: Pro: –The price. Simply put, it was really cheap sushi, but didn’t seem to skimp on the quality or the portions. –The portions/quality. For the price, each roll was larger than most I’ve seen, and was made well. –The meal got out to us quickly. Con: –The waiter was rather unresponsive, except when delivering our food. I wasn’t expecting much else, however. –It’s not the best quality, but I think that’s part of the deal here. It’s an excellent low to mid priced sushi place, and when I find myself in the East Village again, I may stop in.

Ordered on Seamless with a 30 – 45 minute time estimate and the food did not come until two hours after I ordered… Completely unacceptable. When I called several times to find out if they were close, the man on the phone screamed«we are busy, i dont know» at me. As for the food, the Oyama roll was actually good, but their beef ramen was disgusting. It was essentially soggy spaghetti in broth with a few slices of meat. The sashimi was«meh»… To their credit, they did throw in an order of dumplings, but I horrible service and below average food does not warrant a repeat purchase.

Kind of a terrible place. My chirashi was served on a plate — noooo. One does not eat scattered rice from a plate with chopsticks. That wasn’t the worst of its offenses — the fish was just cut in too-large pieces, making it impossible to eat elegantly. The rice didn’t have a sweet/vinegary taste I expect of sushi rice. The fish wasn’t too too fresh either, and I would have much preferred a little more variety than 3 hulking slices of three different kinds of fish.

This place and I have a history together… I been eating here for the past 10 years. I used to come here after school and this place brings back so many memories. The ambiance is not the best– it looks outdated with the beer girl pictures and the old décor. The tables and the dishes are all very old. The staff are nice and to the point– no small talk. I like how they always get my order right. The sushi is not fresh. It is a step up from supermarket sushi nowadays. That was not the case 10 years ago. The portions some how shrink during recent years. My favorite rolls are the green river roll– octopus with seaweed seasoning on the rice. I also like the crazy roll with fried fish and the spicy mayo. They make a very good california roll I have to admit. They put large chunks of avocado and they are bigger than most sushi places around the area. I do not recommend sashimi here because the raw fish smells fishy– indication that the fish is not fresh. The price is right for this place. If you are in the area and looking for cheap fast sushi, come here but dont expect 5 star.

Well, if I could give something 0 stars I would. I hate giving such a bad review, but seeing as how I am writing this from home now, as I food poisoning prevented me from going to work today I think it’s justified. I partially blame myself — 50% off is a wise decision for buying shoes, not for seafood.

Came in with a few friends on a Friday afternoon for some quick sushi. The place is small but inviting. I didn’t really pay too much attention to the service considering that it wasn’t a fine dining experience, and we were just looking for something quick to eat. I must say, that the sushi that we received was ok, and it is at a very cheap price. My personal favorite was the spicy lobster roll which I had 2 of at the restaurant, and took 3 more to go. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that asks.

Mediocre sushi for an affordable price. Came here with a group of 8 people on a Saturday night, and Oyama was able to sit us immediately. Don’t be fooled by the 50% off mind trick, just treat the 50% prices as if they were the normal price and proceed. The sushi was the most mediocre sushi you could make without being terrible. For $ 7.50, you get two normal rolls and miso soup! What a steal, especially in this area. Don’t come expecting anything more than cheap sushi, and you won’t be disappointed.

Cheap, very cheap for average quality food. If it wasnt clear, that’s a good thing. Its good for big parties, but I probably wouldn’t go back unless I was with a big group.

I visited Oyama today early for lunch as some of the other sushi spots in the area weren’t open and I was hungry and in a rush. This was also my last visit to Oyama. The 50% off sushi is, in my opinion, a marketing tactic that evidently works on a lot of folks who go there. I’ve been to many places in NYC that are budget sushi spots that sell sushi at what Oyama calls its 50% off rate. By advertising 50% off it reels in a lot of customers. It’s safe to say that if the prices on sushi are ALWAYS50%, then it probably never was at the 100% markup rate — or if it was, it wasn’t for long. Don’t be fooled by the half-off, you’ll get similar prices at LOTS of sushi joints around town. The place didn’t feel welcoming or super clean. I looked at my table and the area around and it seemed fine but something didn’t put me totally at ease. I ordered vegetable steamed gyoza(absolutely disappointing — the gyoza wasn’t very hot and tasted rubbery) and a sushi deluxe special. The only thing I can tell you I enjoyed was the hot, miso soup. The rice, as other Unilocalers have noted, was VERY mushy and the sashimi was huge — a bit of a challenge for dunking in soy sauce and then try putting the sucker in your mouth — I’d have to bite off the edges of the fish first in order to fit everything in one bite. Even the plating they chose for the sushi indicated there wasn’t much, if any, thought or care given to the sushi. I didn’t notice it until towards the end of my visit but the entire place smelled strongly of fish — I don’t mean a lovely aroma of fish being primed and prepared, I mean it was malodorous. I didn’t finish my last two pieces of sushi due to the smell. I left the place satiated but not satisfied. The sushi, the service, and the place left much to be desired. A few hours later and I don’t feel ill(phew), but unless you are deliriously hungry as I was, I’d go somewhere else.

Cheap, and for a reason. The sushi they serve here has gone from bad to worse. Now it’s garbage. Last time I went I had their dinner special(eel, spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls), plus the lobster roll. They were all nasty. They looked nasty. The rice was all blogged together like old pieces of dough, while the fish looked, smelled and tasted like it had been left out for a while… miles away from fresh sushi. Even a dollar spent here is thrown away. I have no reason to ever go back.

Okay, so there is 50% off sushi… Well I wasn’t overly impressed. Sure, it sounds like a good deal, but it’s almost like you get what you pay for. I’ve had 50% sushi deals from other places and they are better than this. There are a lot of rolls and sushi to choose from but I stuck with the spicy lobster roll and the tuna avocado roll with 2 pieces of tamago. The lobster roll was okay but not amazing. The tuna was super fishy and definitely not fresh tasting. They put way too much rice in everything. The bathrooms are in the back and quite dungeon-looking. Not a fan.

Alright here’s the deal-50% OFFALLSUSHITHATISALLYOUNEEDTOKNOW. But in-case you want to know more: 50% off sushi probably means that Oyama isn’t making too much money off of us so don’t expect fancy ass bells and whistles. That means –Fresh, delicious but not mind-blowing sushi –Cheap prices– you will be stuffed, and hating yourself if you make it to $ 15 –Lets face it, you get what you pay for– no prime select sashimi, but straight up good cheap sushi that won’t make you want to die the next day. –Also cheap, dirrrty cheap booze. I smell a wonderful birthday opportunity? –That also means hand made menus and homey décor– so what? I dig it! Feels like a homemade restaurant– don’t hate. Also delivery is nice and speedy. Thank you, thank you very much Oyama– keep doin the damn thang.

After being a victim of several’s RIDICULE Saturday’s(June 11th) yesterday to give more feces of a TOILET; Sunday’s(June 12th) today is a new day with new beginnings where I was welcomed with warm hearts once more. As I am sorely missed and inquired by many with much compassion and acceptance without question, this proverbial daughter lost – is now found! Surely better days are tomorrow indeed. «When I fall down you pick me up, When I am dry, you fill my cup You are my all in all Seeking you as a precious jewel, Lord to give up I’d be a fool You are my all in all…» Lunch with a former co-worker and good friend for an early afternoon girl talk at Oyama Japanese was plentiful at $ 7.95 per person of the lunch/dinner special. The chicken and pork Tonkatsu were abundant in quantity yet plentiful in taste. Wait staff is somewhat attentive though our server was monotone in both facial expression and apathetic vibe of a dead soul. The spicy salmon sushi a la carte at 50% off was a good choice for a shared side dish regarded as an appetizer. Oyama foots the budget at an extremely reasonable price in today’s ailing economy effect.
