Peppino Tailors

Took a full suit and linen jacket here to get taken in. Ended up being a massive job and these guys handled it with ease. I am not lying whereby it now feels like I have a completely bespoke suit and jacket as well. Would recommend to anyone in the area in a heartbeat. Peppino used to work at Saks… for all those who need that extra level of confidence to go here.

I came to this tailor on the recommendation of a co-​worker, as he assured me their work was impeccable. I went to repair the zipper slider of a jacket, not the zipper but just the shuttle that allows the zipper to zip up, and down. When I went I asked the gentleman who was attending to me to quote me a price, and he refused to do so. After some back and forth, he only claimed that it was going to be «cheap». I had another jacket that was having a similar issue with the zipper, and I decided to bring it in as well going off of the «cheap» prices that he claimed. Again, he refused to quote me a price, maintaining that it was going to be «cheap». When I went to pick them up, I was shocked when the bill came to 60 dollars!!! Please keep in mind that he did not change any of the zippers, just the shuttle on both pieces. So if you’re going to use these tailors, get a quote! If you don’t, you might be in for an unwelcome surprise.

No staff spoke English so I had to mime what I wanted to be done. They pinned me after I had to physically show them how to alter it (they did not take a single measurement). The pins were placed so poorly that when I moved one sliced a huge gash on my arm and bled on dress. They said they would not pay for dry cleaning.

I haven’t picked up the consignment Versace which they sold me in LA for 25 less due to broken zipper but this place gets 5 stars just for the OUTSTANDING service.
The two cleaners on 62^nd are the dry cleaner/​alterations equivalent of the Soup Nazi with none of the charm Seinfeld’s aesthetic context provides.
I hate them both (but can’t remember the names so I can write up a RARE one-​star review for both of these evil, barking horrors)!
I had flown in from LA and a freshly dry-​cleaned dress needed pressing. They wanted 18 on 62^nd for it and when I said how much to clean (18), they yelled at me again. Then they said, «Okay 17.» Seriously? Knocking off a buck. I almost thought it was a joke but this man has no sense of humor (or even a molecule of common courtesy). His hostility for the (admittedly privileged but generally gracious) neighborhood residents is so palpable I am shocked anyone patronizes his store. I don’t deny class warfare exists and this was a very clear case of class warfare (with what seemed to have an ethnic component in both cases).
But it gets better. It was 5 or so and neither one would just steam it for a few minutes. I have meant to buy an iron but my neighbor has one and a table so I figured I would just get one at Bed Bath and Beyond. Every time I’m there by Lincoln Center, the lines scare me away.
I could have worn something black to the Laguardia High School tribute to Ben Vereen, who was inducted as the first member of the school’s Hall of Fame, but it said «festive.» After polling FB friends, I learned this meant (among other things) colorful and a Tadashi dress I brought needed dry cleaning so this was my only festive choice.
It is a Nicole Miller violet silk but it wrinkles like linen, oddly. I have never had silk like this. A very cool iron is okay but obviously steam is safer.
Not only at 5:40 (they close at 6:30) did they do it: they didn’t CHARGE me for it and I instantly brought my Versace which a SB obnoxious tailor wanted 42 to fix.
Our dry cleaning in SB is outrageous. If I can get my stuff done for HALF the money in the 10 065 area code, one of the most expensive in New York and America – SB has a serious problem.
It’s flash flooding tonight so I won’t pick up till tomorrow but it’s clean and fine upstairs. It was very warm that day as the a/​c was fluky but two regulars were there and the whole thing put a smile on my face.
They didn’t tell me (because I didn’t press) how much the broken zipper would cost. But I would RATHER pay 42 dollars to someone who isn’t a total a******* like the guy who got in my face when I noted how overpriced this was and had to say oh how wonderful they are and that others do poor work by comparison.
Whatever. I like Ecocleaners for the dry cleaning but now bring all my dirty laundry and dry cleaning to NYC and send out the first morning I’m here (or Monday if I get here Saturday night).
Ecocleaners has lost my business unless I’m desperate for a dress or skirt when in SB.

I took a long, chiffon Amsale bridesmaids dress to Peppino’s for alterations. They were friendly and professional and did a great ob on the alterations.
The top was probably 2 sizes too big and needed some major work and the dress needed a hem (2 layers). Took 2 weeks and cost $ 95. In my opinion both the time and cost were reasonable for the work done. I will return for my other tailoring needs.

After my regular tailor of many years retired, I decided to give this place a try. Imagine my utter shock when the charge for hemming a cotton sundress and taking in a sleeveless blouse a little on each side was a whopping $ 70! That’s $ 25 just to hem the dress, which costs maybe $ 15 at virtually every other tailor in the city, and a wallet-​gouging $ 45 to take in a blouse. I get virtually all of my clothes tailored, and I really had high hopes for this place, as it’s near my apartment and the place is spotless. But the prices are so astronomical that, unfortunately, I’ll never return.
Update: I recently discovered that the dress mentioned above that was supposed to have been hemmed was actually BASTED! Meaning that it was stitched temporarily (in lieu of pinning) but never actually SEWN. Never in my life have I seen a tailor try to pass off basting as actually hemming or otherwise sewing a garment. I’d like to think the tailor basted it and then forgot to actually sew it, but based on the rest of the shoddy tailoring on that dress (uneven seams, etc.), I am sure they figured they could just get away with it. $ 25 for basting a dress. What on earth do they charge to actually hem one?!?

I brought a pricey maxi dress to get hemmed prior to wearing for my birthday. The associates at Peppino were delightful, helpful, and professional. Despite not having worn the proper footwear, we were able to improvise and the dress came out beautifully. It looks like no hem was needed which is exactly how it should be!
I would definitely recommend Peppino to anyone if they are looking for a reasonably priced tailor in the area.

The modest setup says it all: Quality work at reasonable (but not cheap) prices… and there’s a BiG difference.
The shop is on the second floor of a commercial walk-​up building close to the 59^th St 4/​5/​6/​N/​Q/​R stop. There are 2 clean changing rooms tucked away from the main work space and not a dust bunny to be found in the shop… two things that would be deal-​breakers for me (I have really hated some of the other changing setups, or lack thereof, at other seemingly highly regarded tailors).
After the successful alteration of 2 formal dresses and 3 casual dresses, I can happily share that the staff here can hem, take in seams, and rework shaping like no one else I’ve visited. Possibly one of the guarded secrets of the UES, Peppinos is simply great at what they do.
