Petqua

I LOVE Petqua! Not only do I shop there bc it’s one of the few independent stores left on the UWS, but they have the best customer service. They always have fun treats for our doggy and the store owners are so friendly and knowledgeable. Petqua is a neighborhood staple. It’s so important that we all support this store to keep small business thriving in the West 90’s!

This place is amazing. Everyone who works here is extremely nice and so helpful. I went on Valentines Day with my boyfriend and we spent almost 2 hours there playing with the animals and looking around. We purchased two fish and of course the beta fish was trying to attack my baby goldfish. So I called today and they are allowing me to exchange for a new friend. I will always come back to this pet store for any supplies or new purchases.

I had to buy some supplies for my new puppy so figured I would go to the chain Petco at 92^nd St. At Petco, I waited for over 10 minutes for someone to help me but there was no one around! Just one woman at the checkout station and a long line. So off I went to Petqua — I received immediate and helpful personal service and the prices were the same as Petco. Should have to gone to Petqua first.

I’m looking to get a bird not sure as to what exact kind in the parrot family. I found this place on my Unilocal app called & spoke with Sam. Absolutely wonderfully pleasant. Gave me loads of information answered every question I had. These people LOVE animals it’s not a business or about $$$$ they actually care to make sure that you the customer & the pet are a good fit for each other that you are well informed before you leave with your new family member. I was just so amazed by the customer service I don’t even feel right calling it that it was more then that.

What a great neighborhood business! Petqua carries a great selection of food for my kitties, some of which I can’t find at other area pet food stores. The staff is super helpful and always nice. Best of all, the prices are often LESS than other area stores.

I’ve been at Petqua twice, and so far have had great experiences. Sam, the owner was very helpful from day one. He was knowledgeable and answered all of my questions (and I had quite a few!). The place itself isn’t huge, but they do have what I like so no complains. Also I have yet to go downstairs I assumed it was storage, must be sure to check it out next time! all in all I will definitely be going back there for my boys needs

The goldfish I bought from here spread ich and anchor worm to my tank. What a nightmare that was. Thanks a lot.

I only paid attention to the saltwater. If that’s what you want, don’t bother. The tanks are downstairs in a dirty, dark basement. Poorly lit and poorly maintained, all they have is base rock covered in brown diatoms and Cyanobacteria.
Don’t expect much from the service either. One guy behind the register didn’t bother to look up from his iPad. Another wouldn’t make eye contact.

The guys here run a caring, knowledgeable, and awesome independent pet shop. Make sure to say hi to the parrot and meet the tortoise downstairs.

Petqua is my neighborhoods mom and pop shop pet store and often pass by just to have a look. I have not bought any sort of product in Petqua although their prices are average, but they do have a number of random goods that are worth the price. Their animals are located beneath the store, and they’re taken good care of. When I first walked into Petqua I thought it looked a bit run down an unsafe, but i started to noticed that the store organized, the animals are always healthy looking, and their kept in correct temperatures and habitats.
The store has 3 current store pets. An adorable cat that loves to stick her tongue out and a parrot who greets you when you go down stairs. The best pet of all is their Sulcata turtle, which is often seen walking around or basking! I’ve been wanting a Sulcata, and in the mean time this is the closest I can get to one without owning one.
Their is a pond installed in the back with Koi and cat fishes, and smaller turtles. The workers here are really nice, and always looking forward to answering your questions. I will eventually purchase something for petqua and not just eye everything. I think it’s wonderful that theirs a mom and pop shop in manhattan valley because their dying out rapidly and their really something quite impressive.

Petqua is one of the BEST priced –hands down– pet stores on the Upper West side.
This is a local mom/​pop style shop — The staff is very friendly and knows their products and if they don’t know something they ask someone who does and get back to you. Which I really appreciate.
If you are looking for fancy signage, big displays and rewards point reward gimmicks this is not for you. I’ve priced the dog and cat food in all the local pet stores (actually in most NYC) and they cannot be beat which is a huge deal for me.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but in my humble opinion Sam, Ed and the rest of the staff really do love animals, give me great service and deliver as promised.

I have been a Petqua customer for over a decade and I have seen the store survive a devastating fire that literally destroy their bussiness and force them to shut down for nearly a year. Thank God they were able to come back. They are sincere about the animals and their needs and I am sure that if they were financially capable they would have made more improvements and certainly install an air conditioning unit in the basement, which must cost a small fortune. The staff members are very knowledgeable and will never give you the wrong information, or sell you something that you may not even need for the sake of making a sale. When you shop there you are appreciated and valued When it comes to quality and prices they are extremely competitive. In overall, Petqua is a place where you can shop with a piece of mind that you are getting the most for your money and more.
Take it from me, in all the years that I have been shopping at Petqua I got everything I ever needed for my pets at a great price and service. I always feel good knowing that I am helping my neighbors to continue to operate and to offer their impeccable service to our community.
You should give Petqua a chance and have the experience you and your pets deserve.

Using every square-​inch of space in the store, every nook and cranny is filled with pet food, toys, and aquariums.
After walking through the 2-​story shelves of cat and dog supplies, I went downstairs to the basement, which others here have dubbed «the sauna.» Down there the fresh and saltwater tanks were rather unkempt, and the fish were either very healthy looking and active or diseased and dying – not much in between.
One of the tanks had a terrible case of cyanobacteria covering the floor, some of the walls, and filter. Most of the other tanks were bare-​bottom or blooming various species of algae on the substrate if they had any. It led me to believe they do not keep up on their aquarium maintenance, and really made me feel as if these fish were living in the aquatic form of a dog pound. A couple of crickets skittered by my shoes as I watched an enormous tortoise wander the basement floor.
While I hate to be so negative, I came here because of the glowing 4 – 5 star reviews, and left thoroughly disheartened by the state of things. Upstairs was well kept, clean, and well-​lit. While downstairs was very neglected and I wouldn’t want to take any of those fish home to put into my tanks, unless to try and rescue them from the poor conditions they appear to be in.
I would highly recommend this place for any dog or cat food/​toys/​supplies as they have a greater variety than I have ever seen.

The independently owned store is a nice breather from the chains around this neighborhood. I buy my pet supplies here usually but occasionally I go tot he chains and always regret it afterwards and return to Petqua.
They have a nice selection of food and a sweet Amazon that greets its customers.
I like the service there and they can order things for you if you have a special need.

Moved to New York a few years back and most of the pet stores in the city are not great. On the upper west and in the Columbia area, Petqua is a better option than Petland Discounters, and their staff is more knowledgeable than the people at the latter. However, that said…
I have bought supplies from them a few times– they have a decent selection. However when I recently made a purchase of fish, that was a big mistake. The fish were not healthy and were dead within a week of bringing them home, despite the fact that I rushed out and bought the appropriate medicine at the first sign of disease (the day after I brought them home). I’m an experienced fishkeeper and I was not pleased. Not the best fish selection, and sold sick fish which contaminated the rest of my tank.

This store has probably some of the most knowledgeable owners around. Sam, one of the owners, is fantastic and never fails to answer any questions I have. True, the downstairs is incredibly hot, but considering all they have are tropical animals and fish down there, it’s appropriate.
These guys obviously really care about pets, their business and the Upper West Side neighborhood. They’re a little (read tiny) bit more expensive than PETCO and Petland Discounts, but you’re supporting a local, small business and you’re paying for the expertise.
If you can, make Petqua your store of choice and you won’t regret it.

Are you guys Insane! I visited this placed because the reviews on here were good. That however, was not the case at all. I’m not sure if this pet store has gone down the drain since the reviews were posted or if you people were hired to post favorable reviews. but I must set the record straight so no one else wastes their time.
It should be Shut Down! In fact I’m calling the Humane Society today to file a report. For starters the water in the fish tanks is completely unfit for fish of any kind. The tanks have obviously Never been cleaned. The water is filled with algae, so much so that if you look into the tanks from the top you can not even see a single fish below. There are many dead fish floating in the tanks and the salt water tanks, can’t even be considered salt water. They are so filthy that they can barely even support the few fish left alive inside of them let alone any kind of real coral or other living creature. And the poor turtles in the pond are covered in some form of algae or fungus. It’s horrifying to think places like this are somehow in business.
Don’t waste your time going here. Unless it’s to give the owner a piece of your mind.

I’ve been here a few times, and every time I’ve been here, no matter summer or winter, it has just been a sauna downstairs. Honestly, I think it might even be too hot for the animals that live down there. Seriously, put the air on people, because you’re driving the customers outa there!
Besides the desert heat, the pet store itself is not too bad. It only gets 3 stars for not having the healthiest looking animals and for obviously not feeding their crickets enough. The bearded dragon downstairs (Note: if you go downstairs looking for this dragon, he may or may not be there — they rotate in and out new animals often) has a massive head compared to its tiny body. Why? He was obviously malnourished and therefore didn’t grow to full size. I know because I have a bearded dragon. And she’s healthy and much more proportioned. We feed her well. The crickets at Petqua also seem to be lacking food. Not to mention that some of the staff, although very nice, does not know what they’re doing.
Really I’m comparing Petqua to Uptown Birds down in the 80s on Amsterdam. Now that is a 5 star pet store. Unfortunately we’re now closer to this pet store.
One fun plus. There is a full grown turtle that walks around freely in the desert. He’s very friendly and can be pet.
