Port Authority Bus Terminal

Aside from the terrible homeless smell, the clocks are all wrong so the buses leave ahead of schedule. God forbid they look into the atomic clock like most transportation terminals.

The first floor bathrooms have been closed for at least 7 months, if not more. People are always laying on the ground and asking for money. Not safe at night, for sure. With so many people commuting, I would think there would be a seating area but there isn’t. They have added a charging station near the ticket vendors. The cops here are too busy checking everyday commuters’ backpacks rather than handling the bums and keeping this place safe.

Just get in/​out as fast as you can. As others said, BEWARE of the shady characters that lurk this depressing bus station, especially if you are a tourist. Trust no one. Homeless people seem to like it here. Had a lady approach me with a timetable and a few dollars in hand claiming she needed money to board a greyhound bus to Ithaca, NY and that she needed all the help she could get, yadayadayada. Only had larger bills on me as well as a few singles. The large bills weren’t happening, so I gave her all the singles I had. When I handed her the money? Not a thank you, not one word out of her. She took it and walked away. Who knows what the hell she was going to spend it on, but that’s none of my business. It eas just a strange, eerie encounter.
Just be sure to stay alert, but don’t do anything to stand out much. Blend in with the crowd around you. Keep a pair of earphones in without the music on to avoid conversation with anyone. If you must, strike up a conversation with the people waiting for the same bus as you. people that look normal, for that matter. Look straight ahead to avoid confrontation with any of the seedy characters mentioned earlier.
As For navigating through this shithole, There’s a digital display board in the front of the bus terminal on the first floor displaying all of the buses and their routes/​gates. You may have to scroll through using the touch screen to locate your bus. If you are not too tech savvy you could ask one of the desk employees where your gate is located. They are usually pretty knowledgable. I normally take the buses that go directly to NJ via route 9, and those are pretty abundant in PABT because of all the NJ commuters so I don’t have too much of a difficult time locating my buses.
Kind of sucks how in the biggest city in the world, we have this scary, shitty excuse of a bus terminal. Looks like something fresh out of a horror movie. Never used the bathrooms here and don’t think I ever will. I would rather piss myself to be honest. Why else were black pants invented after all?

As a background, my first time here was as a young college student visiting her bf (I’ve been here abut 4 times total). So from my perspective, if you’ve never been here it can be pretty overwhelming.
Here are some tips for bus newbies like myself:
1) You will definitely be intimidated by the seemingly NYC locals at the help desk, but you will definitely need to ask them for help on locating your bus.
2) Once you find your bus area, ask the people in line where they are going. Remember, your destination is likely a stop on the way to where their ticket says. So don’t worry if you are going to NJ and they are going to say, Virginia. (Unlike me who was too arrogant to realize this at first, and started having a mild panic attack that I would be stuck in the station forever).
3) There is a chance the people in line near you may end up being straight up crazy, but if they appear normal it is worth striking up a conversation!
4) Regarding tip 3, if you are worried about a seat mate use the time in line to find a potential one.
Overall, I would recommend to a friend. The buses I took were clean, timely, and had wifi/​outlets. There needs to be a better system for finding buses though.

I’m giving one star for the the pigeon population which has reduced dramatically. Yes, bands of pigeons used to roam freely here. Writing this live from Port authority as I wait for a bus to CT. It has actually improved slightly from when I was last here years ago. You have to come prepared for some unpleasantness, if you accept that, then just go about your business and get on the bus. Get here early as it is a maze and finding an accurate board with your bus location is a challenge. Many restrooms are closed. There is increased police presence which is good. Most bathrooms are closed for construction. I feel for the European tourists who come here, accustomed to better transport systems and are horrified.

*sigh* Port Authority. Why do you make me so sad? First of all, I’m really tired of the people just standing and crowding around staring at absolutely nothing. I understand Port Authority is right in a tourist area but people, go outside.
Second, the restrooms were closed! But I understand they need to be worked on, so I’m not even going to complain.
Third, why in the hell is everything overpriced? I know it’s NYC but believe it or not, I generally come to NYC to do my shopping and do my hair because it’s actually much cheaper than Rockland and anywhere locally but these people in PA really think I’m going to buy a candy bar for $ 4? That’s cute.
The only thing I like in Port Authority are the handsome men IN authority, honey. Don’t get me started on the eye candy that I see every time I’m in Port Authority. I think Port Authority and the NYPD hire these handsome men on purpose to distract us and catch us slipping. Nope, won’t catch me! I will not fall for it. But if they ask to frisk me, I won’t say no (lmao). They’ve earned you guys three stars because of it weren’t for them, you’d receive two!

I’m a fan. It’s centrally located and has buses to New Jersey. My friends and I stayed in Union City, New Jersey and it was so easy to grab a bus. They run every few minutes and only cost $ 3. Port Authority was surprisingly clean and well kept including the public bathrooms on the third floor.

I’d rather pay an extra $ 50 for an Amtrak train than to visit this bus station again. It smells like a bathroom — I don’t think this place has been cleaned since the 90s. Every person here seems to have attitude, and bus customers are constantly walking around confused and lost. This is a special shoutout to the greyhound terminal, where because they overbook their buses, there are huge crowds clustered around each gate. Employees are especially rude and don’t take the time to explain what is going on.
Seriously, use any other route to travel.

operates as a bus terminal should with all the headaches and bad hygiene that is to be expected. perfect amounts of awful scents throughout, and just the right number of people washing themselves in the bathrooms at night. Specifically I like the bums who are belligerent and insist on disrupting other female commuters and the great people that smoke indoors. Place is just spectacular!

So sad because this place has so much potential it could optimize. PA Bus Terminal is a great transportation hub that takes people to and fro’ our fair City but it’s dirty, sells only junk food and their bathrooms are dubious at best.
Here are some ways you can make the best of your PA bus terminal experience:
1) Bring in food from the outside when bringing snacks for a trip. The food they sell here is all empty, greasy calories. Pro tip: Do not bring anything too smelly on a bus or train.
2)Iif you’re an NJ transit commuter, look for other places you can purchase tickets, such as downtown on Broadway, to avoid the schlep and lines here
3) Be aware and stay safe! Don’t talk to strangers and don’t trust people who are friendly for no reason. Sounds like a no brainier, but I write Unilocal reviews to help people and I would be remiss to omit this.

Port Authority, are you ok?!? Your health is not looking too great. This is a stop that is always part of my commute whenever I’m in NY and I don’t enjoy it. Pro tip: bring sanitizer with you!
Certain parts of the terminal are okay but others are so. Wtf? Lines are so disorganized and people don’t know what they’re lining up for. In addition, they are longer than my life. I remember asking 3 different people what they were in line for and they all said the same destination, despite being in different lines with signs that started otherwise.
I’ve seen some people who are completely passed out at the walls and some who seem like they’ve been day drunk since 2001. Also, the staff that work at PA are not too friendly. I’m just asking you where to go for a certain thing, pls don’t beat me up.
Can’t say I won’t be back because it is one of the vital organs of the transit system but will I enjoy it? …meh, we’ll see.

This place has been hard to navigate to find the right gate for your bus. It would benefit from better signs everywhere.
Some buses were canceled last minute.
This area has been feeling border-​line safe due to some unsavory characters hanging out there.
It has been my least preferred mean to commute from New York City to New Jersey. I always try to drive or take the train instead first.

I witnessed a guy punch another man while waiting for my bus home today. The man who was attacked was protecting another female rider from being harassed for money. This heroic man was punched around his eyes and lips which swelled up immediately. There was no police presence or any PA workers to help. Other passengers had to stop the fight, take photos of the assailant, call the police, and decide to watch the assailant walk away because he was gearing to punch another person.
It was after all of this that we realized a PA employee was in the booth watching this happen the whole time. He came out to report after the assailant had left the scene. The police said they will come, but the bus came shortly after and the man who was attached decided to get on the bus, so we all did.
We all were shuffling through our bags for a tissue for him to wipe away blood on his nose, and we were upset that none of us had ice like that is a commonly carried item.
I understand the PA employees are not security guards and police presence can not be available all the time. But PA employees can be trained to report faster so police available near by can come as soon as possible. When we call we have to go through 911 and it takes longer. Also, the booths should at least have first aid kit for a quick remedy. The PA employee never checked on the man and went right back into his booth after calling and shooed us away when we tried to ask him questions. PA employees can also be trained with emphatic protocols.
Most commuters do not have a choice but to utilize Port Authority. However, a physical attack and harassment should never be a way to end our day.
Port Authority should not feel comfortable with or ignore people getting harassed or violently attacked in their facility.
I doubt the gentleman, who found it necessary to protect a fellow rider today, will ever read this, but I want to thank you again for caring and acting. You are a great person.

The bathrooms were just redone. So the smell has improved. People are going crazy all around you but you are there. Explore it. Discover it.
Drew I’m getting poetic about Port A. Watch out.

It used to be worse but it still ain’t great! It can be confusing to find your bus and while the police are on hand to prevent trouble, a large number of people at the station don’t appear to be there to take a bus somewhere. The place is run down and perpetually dirty. The staff there does make an effort to clean up, but the odds are stacked against them because the place is falling apart. On the other hand it all makes Penn Station and paying a bit more for the train not seem so bad after all…

Nothing represents the ineptitude and corruption of the Port Authority better than this hell hole of a transportation hub.
Crazy bums. Dilapidated facilities. Terrible layout. Stuffy old stale air. It’s got it all.
Need to take a bus? Good luck finding out what gate it’ll be leaving from. Good luck even finding out when you need to be there. And while you’re walking to your bus, good luck not being harassed by some crazy bum, offering to help you in exchange for money to buy drugs.
Right when I start to regain a little bit of hope for mankind, PABT is here to bring me back to reality.

I want to give this .0001 stars. This place is a giant public bathroom built in 19whatever and you should never go there. Riding a smelly Bolt Bus/​Greyhound/​Peter Pan bus for X amount of hours is bad enough but once you get off at port authority bus terminal, thats when the real shit show begins. its dirty and filled with homeless vagrants. The food options are all junk food that i’m 99.99 999% sure are infested with rats and roaches.
don’t even think about using the bathrooms.
Don’t do it, whatever you do, take amtrak, or if you find yourself having to come here, just get out of there fast.

Port Authority is a necessary evil. It is a means to travel to NJ very quickly but it is also a bus terminal so you get all kinds of things occurring there from urination smells and homeless people (they have to go somewhere for warmth!) and every single type of person imaginable. A true representation of NYC in my opinion.
I hate the bus because I always feel like I get let off at the wrong stop and I don’t ever really know where I should get off. I always have to track my location with my phone and its annoying. Still its a necessary evil. And port authority is a hub for a lot of destinations which you can’t beat. I have never had a problem with the bus in terms of cleanliness and space.

This place needs a lot of rework. Maybe even a rebuild.
I am not going to bore people with details on when thr place waa build and how it was a state of the art in its hey day but time passes by and now it is becoming old and decrepit and can barely hold it’s own in the face of a growing demand but blah blah blah it’s boring.
The place is definitely showing its age and I think it may need to be demolished in favor of something newer and more modern. The number of commuters it handles on a daily basis requires much better management including better better traffic management within PABT where it is possible to have a situation that buses are waiting for the gates to open and blocking traffic while that happens. The lines to the gates a horrible and disorganized for a lot of commuter lines. If god forbid there is an accident around Lincoln tunnel you are basically stuck. The bathrooms are dismal though slightly improved in the last couple of years. The doors to and from the Subways are near constantly in need of repair and would benefit from being able to swing both ways. Getting buses in and out is also a challenge, so it may take you an hour to get to New York and another 20 — 30 minutes to get into the Bus Terminal if you’re unlucky enough to go through the 40 th street.
So yes it does work. People can get in and out but boy does it need replacement…

This place is Gross.

The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because the bus is an affordable way to travel to New Jersey.
Hudson news stands are Newer and seems pretty clean. I went to the bowling alley for drinks after hanging in the city, Not too bad.
There is a Dunkin donuts coming soon… should help.
The tunnel is expensive and the train schedules are not as frequent as the bus.
I frequent the North Bergen Park and Ride and the Rutherford bus. Coming home usually not a problem.
The Rutherford bus going to Port authority is unreliable. Bus schedule says one thing, the driver that day does his own thing.
Unfortunately the cheapest way to travel. The port authority is a dump.

The Hub
Overall: 1.5 Stars
The only saving grace of The PABT is the fact there are many connections to buses, trains, taxis, etc. Other than that there should be no reason to ever want to come here.
I mainly use PABT for Grey Hound buses to my gambling destinations (but that leads to a different review). I make sure to hold onto my luggage/​bags closely whenever I’m in the lower levels of PABT. Security is almost non-​existent. Anyone who works as a security guard doesn’t really care and roams slowly down the halls watching for crimes? Many shady characters roaming around and people who just find a place to nap for the whole day.
The place is filthy. I’ve seen abandoned homes treated with better care than PABT. You’d expect swarms of rats to come around the corner at any time and devour the people (as they do in Dishonored) or an army of roaches checking into a 5 star roach hotel at minimum. Amazingly the bathrooms are reasonably clean. They aren’t at the standards of most locations, but they fare better than the majority of bathrooms at subway stations.
The service is helpful, but poor at times. I’ve missed a bus despite arrives 20 minutes early because they didn’t announce the gate change after I arrived. I recommend relying on other passengers because they are typically more knowledgeable than the staff.
Overall, while it is a good way to transfer and get to a new destination, PABT needs massive upgrades into the 21^st Century. They have taken a step in the right direction by introduction giant screens with departure/​arrival times for the buses.
*Note* If you arrive at PABT after 2:00am good luck finding the exit. The majority of them are closed at that time.

This place was ridiculous! So hard to figure things out, we were so lost and confused. They should think of all the visitors and have more signs, an explanation of how things work, help desks or a ²⁴⁄₇ help line to call.
The good thing was lots of stores to grab a bite or drink and a very nice clerk when we used a window to purchase tickets.
This place gave us a headache, it was miserable. And watch out for taxi/​Über drivers outside. One started to give us a ride and then said it was going to cost $ 300! He ended up pulling over and leaving us on the side of the road.

During our stay in New Jersey, we would commute to NY by bus to the Port Authority. Quick and smooth ride from out location in New Jersey. I would always get a pastry from the restaurant located next to the lottery facility. They sell these gigantic pastries for very reasonable prices and they are fresh. The Port Authority has a good array of restaurants, businesses and many carts selling varies items. Great access to Times Square.

I mean… for how convenient it is, you kind of have to take the good with the bad. But there are definitely some renovations to be done.
It’s a hub with multiple bathrooms & enough little eateries to kill time. I’d also say that my bus schedule has been 90% consistent through my two years of travelling, but maybe kudos to the company for that.
I travel out of the bus terminal to head to PA to visit my family. The terminals are too cramped. You need to get there super early otherwise the line starts to wrap around itself, which then blocks the flow of traffic, which then gets people pissed off & in «shove» mode.
Anyone travelling here for the first time would definitely feel like they’re in the Twilight zone, especially with the directional wings. I still get thrown off by it sometimes. Plus, not all bus companies have their schedules listed and tickets available for purchase — mine is online only.
And, finally, the whole place resembles 1975. But, we’re in the hipster age, so that means it’s cool… right?

It’s large and dirty, but very convenient. The pollution level seems to be extremely high at port authority because of all the buses being in one location. Sometimes it’s hard to breathe. It looks like they try to clean the terminal, but given the volume of people it’s probably hard to keep up. The bathrooms are surprisingly clean here in comparison to any other public bathroom.
Port Authority has a lot of stores and places to grab a bite. It’s easy to buy something quick on your way to/​from a bus.

This past weekend I used the Port Authority Bus Terminal. If you are the type of person that keeps your head down, you will think it looks fairly nice. Because I’m always alert looking up, down, and sideways, I see everything. I took very serious note of the ceilings in disrepair. They were patched in a way that looked like something might fall at any minute.
While I understand that some in authority want to build a new terminal nearby, I also believe in historic preservation. There is so much history here. I am not in the know so I will not make a judgement. I personally would like to see a gut renovation of this current location.
This location is convenient to all transportation (subways) and tourist locations.
I’m hoping the people in charge make the right decision. I hate to have a more difficult commute to gain entrance. Especially in the Winter.
For people having trouble navigating the 3 floors and extensive grounds, you can download a map on their web site. There are lots of food places to meet your visitors. Each transportation company usually has a map on their site to show you their location. The escalators always work! There’s shopping, they have ticket machines so you don’t gave to wait in line. It’s like a big mall if you want to hang out for the day.
I love the statues. I especially like Jackie Gleason out front! It is a landmark in my book. I don’t care for all of the homeless and undesirable looking characters that hang around inside and out. I find the restrooms clean more often than not depending on the time of day I’m there.
If you want to get around without a car you must use it. Could it be better? Yes! Could it be worse? Yes! It is what it is. It will be in the future what the elite in charge want it to be.

A necessary evil. Why can’t they clean Port Authority up a bit? Sometimes it is necessary to take a bus to/​from the city, though I try to avoid it…

It’s a nicer hub than penn station.
The winding ramp that brings you out into the daylight into Manhattan gave me a thrill of a days gone by cross country adventure about to start.

Located in Midtown at 625 Eighth Avenue between 40^th Street and 42^nd Street, one block east of the Lincoln Tunnel and one block west of Times Square, this bus terminal is usually packed with commuters. This is the largest bus terminal in the United States and the busiest in the world. It has 223 departure gates. It’s great because it’ll get you to where you need to go. However, there is so much congestion and could use a cleaning. I also thought it was a little difficult to find your way around with little or no food options, unlike Grand Central.

Ugh, awful. Public transportation in this country is a disgrace.
If you really need to get somewhere via bus, you’re going to probably have to go to the Port Authority. My parents moved down the shore, and unfortunately for me, the easiest, quickest, cheapest way of visiting now involves departing from here.
Ignoring the weirdos and riff raff and aggressive commuters and dank surroundings, it’s a logistical nightmare trying to figure out which gate, which bus, which zone, etc… you need to take. They could certainly benefit from ONE BIG BOARD.
If you do make it to your gate, the powers that be may change your gate last minute, during which you will lose your place in line to last minute hyena vulture line cutters, who should be banished to a very specific layer of hell upon their unholy earthly demise. I get there early, I waited for my prime spot, and I hate the feisty interchanges between us planners and them hyenas. The whole experience is riddled with anxiety.
This place makes Penn Station look civilized.

Esta estación de autobuses es bastante grande y lo que más me gusta es que ahí mismo puedes tomar el metro. Es uno de los puntos del metro en los que puedes tomar la línea que quieras eso tienes que caminar bastante para encontrar la línea que estes buscando. La ubiacación de este lugar es realmente maravillosa en especial para los turistas que quieren viajar y/​o tomar alguno de los autobuses o el metro. Se encuentra ubicado a tan sólo una cuadra del time squaer.
Bueno creo que no hay tanto que decir de este lugar más que cuenta con excelente ubicación y servicios.

This place consists of a large 3 floor bus terminal which connects directly to the A, C, E line. The underground passage way from the subway takes you right to Port Authority. Three stars b/​c it gets me where I need to go and also traveling this route is better than the alternative at Penn Station where I feel is total chaos, lost people wandering, the smell of urine and basically the arm pit of NY unless Im traveling the belt parkway than that wins. So maybe in that case 4 stars? Well so far I go grab a bus and head into NY or back to NJ. I find it so much better than the train. The bus driver 80% of the time is very friendly going back at night to NJ via Bergen park and ride. I like the bus better than the train bc I haven’t experienced the drunk loud group that usually rides back on the train to NJ with me on NJ transit. Beware after 10:00 PM or 15 minutes before that time they do change gates at night back to NJ, so look before you run as it will save you time. Regarding the bathrooms… I will tell you the bathrooms are horribly filthy so if you can hold it wait, if not well hold your nose and do it fast. Not many places to sit, has some shops and ATM’s. Need food I suggest bring it with you.

Direct underground passageways connect the terminal with NYC Transit subway A, C, E, N, Q, R, 1, 2, 3, and 7 trains, as well as the shuttle to Grand Central Terminal.
From Penn Station:
Take an uptown NYC Transit subway A, C or E train one stop to 42 Street-​Port Authority Bus Terminal. Follow signs to Port Authority Bus Terminal.
From Grand Central Station: Take a Times Square-​42 Street-​bound NYC Transit subway 7 train two stops to Times Square-​42 Street, or a 42 Street-​Times Square-​bound shuttle train one stop to 42 Street-​Times Square.

This place is long past its useful life and needs to be torn down. The building itself is crumbling … Observe all the buckets catching water drips during the next rain storm — just classic!
If you reminisce about dancing the conga line, you’ll love waiting in the long lines here ;)
Announcements are hard to hear — somehow the announcement that says «we’re experiencing delays and apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused» is easily heard and seems to constantly play on repeat.
Bring a «roadie» for the ride home but don’t start drinking until you clear the tunnel otherwise you might regret it during your 2 hour ride home with no bathroom on your bus.

Don’t come in here to use the bathroom. Trust me. This is not Flushing. In other words, you will have lots of trouble Flushing. Because you’ll be ready to pass out from the combination of human stench mixed with chemical stench. It’s worse than Judi Stench, the woman who plays «M» in the Bond movies.
I used to take Greyhounds everywhere because I was Poor. For that reason, I call it the «Poor Authority». If you have enough money, you should always, always, always take the train, or drive, or be driven, instead. That’s my advice.
I used to practically live at Port Authority. Let’s just say that it’s not my favourite place, not by a long shot. It smells awful. The security guards can be brutal. I’ve seen the police harassing people down here. I’ve seen one case of police brutality down here. And I’ve had to spend one too many nights down here waiting for an early morning or late night bus. It’s probably one of the least comfortable places I’ve ever spent a night in my life. And not particularly safe either, despite all the police presence.
If it had a lot of BBQ stands, it’d be the Pork Authority.
Actually, I’m going to call it the «Ort Authority» and dedicate it to Alex K. He told me what an «Ort» is while expressing his disapproval at people that write reviews based on «Orts.» Well, I can say that I am the Ort Authority. But in all honesty this is a really horrible place and one which I recommend avoiding. And I have been robbed here, before. The only place in America I’ve been robbed, except when my car was stolen in Buffalo once.
So why do I give it 4 stars? Well, first of all, it works. Somehow they’ve built this enormous hulk of a bus station that towers above the Midtown West area with its green metal latticework, and yet is subterranean as well. It’s like a fancy computer-​generated super-​structure with ramps and hidden passages and buses coming and going. It was designed brilliantly.
If they had a deck for passenger cars that charged a fortune (after all, it’s Manhattan) then it’d be the Park Authority. Same story if it were in Central Park a few blocks North.
Luckily I rarely use it anymore. I either drive to NYC or I take the train. I don’t ever want to be at the Port Authority again, and yet I find myself coming back just for the memories. It formed such a large part of my childhood, from when I was a teenager right up until recently. I once had a horrible fight with an ex here too. Nasty memories. Sad, bitterswet recollections.
If you had to be 5 foot 5 or less to use this facility, it’d be the «Short Authority.» And would also be mostly female. Which sounds like a much better bus station, now that you mention it.
Nevertheless, well done to NYC for managing to somehow «make it work.» Like Penn Station, as unattractive and smelly and dingy and undesirable as this place is… it manages to work. And is a real feat of modern engineering. And for that reason it scores a 4 from me. That, and the memories.
If everyone here was Athletic, it’d be the «Sport Authority.» And if stealing my bags is a sport then that’s exactly what it is, because yes, I have had a bag stolen at the Port Authority. And yes, it was my own fault. I guess. So be careful around here. Lots of thievery, especially out front. And these people are absolute professionals. You’d think you were in a Capital City of Europe.
The Pauper Authority. Because I was, and am, a pauper. But one that tries to avoid using the Port Authority now at all costs. Except for reminiscing.
Now if it were called the Porn Authority… well that would mean we have gone back in time to an era before Rudy Giuliani ever came to power. And yes, honestly, I loved those days. The Porn Authority was actually a perfect name for it when I was a kid and first came here. I think I may start calling it that. They may have been neighbors with «Adult Show World» but I certainly didn’t need any Adults to Show me the World.

One of the worst bus terminals I’ve ever been to.
It has a lot of floors, and you don’t usually find where’s your bus’ gate located. Think about the least friendly place, and cleanliness it something to improve.
By the way, there’re people that will answer your questions to find what you’re looking for, because there are few indications of where is each place.
Also there is no WiFi nor seats on the gates, so you’d better wait in another place. The only good thing is they have air conditioned.

The armpit of NYC!
I find this station to be atrocious! If I could avoid I would. It’s dank and dirty to say the least. The bus part is more palatable than the subway section.
I never feel comfortable walking through here, always feel like I need to be on my guard. Really nothing redeeming about this transit hub!

Five stars? Oh, yes. Port Authority is a mammoth time capsule. Do you miss the real Times Square and 42^nd Street that the Guiliani administration scrubbed out of existence? Well, you can see reassuring glimpses of it here. It’s garish, it’s fluorescent, it’s dingy, and the employees are surly: a rarity in the new NYC.
And, before you write off the circa-​1980 Burger King-​like interior, there is a sculpture near the ticket counters in the back by well-​known artist George Segal. Art on display. Granted, the commuters in his sculpture look quite pasty and downtrodden but that’s probably because they don’t know about Leisure Time bowling on the upper level or the dive bar downstairs adjacent to the Greyhound gates.
What’s not to like?

J’ai détesté cet endroit, rien n’est fait pour s’y retrouver. Le seul petit point qui lui fait gagner sa 2ème étoile c’est le fait qu’il soit bien situé dans le centre de Times square donc assez simple à trouver. Par contre une fois à l’intérieur il faut s’accrocher car rien est indiqué ou très mal indiqué!
Déjà pour trouver l’endroit où prendre mon bus une fois à l’intérieur c’est juste un calvaire, j’ai du mettre un bon quart d’heure. Ensuite ils ont décidé de changer la porte d’embarquement 15 minutes avant le départ sans même le prévenir au micro.
Heureusement que j’ai été demander au personnel car sinon je l’aurai loupé et pour finir parlons du personnel justement!
Tout ceux a qui j’ai demandé des renseignements étaient désagréables, mal polis, blasés et n’avaient pas du tout envie de faire un effort pour m’aider. Heureusement je tombe au bout de 10 minutes sur la seule personne polie et souriante de cet foutu gare d’autobus desservant le Canada et les villes du Nord Est américain qui m’indique très gentillement où me rendre pour prendre mon bus.
J’arrive donc pile poil à l’heure où l’on doit partir et je me fais à moitié engueuler car à cause de moi on va partir 2 ou 3 minutes en retard alors que c’est eux qui ont changé le numéro de porte à la dernière minute!!!

Der große Busbahnhof von New York befindet sich an der 42^th Street in der Nähe vom Times Square.
Von hier kommt man zu allen Destinationen in und um NYC.
Die meisten Verbindungen gehen sicherlich nach New Jersey und dahinter liegenden Regionen.
Als Besucher ist der Port Authority wichtig, wenn man die großen Malls oder Outlet-​Center besuchen möchte.
Die Garden State Plaza Mall und die Woodbury Common Outlet Mall sind hierüber super zu erreichen.
Zur Garden State Plaze fährt der 163 NJ-​Transit Bus und zur Woodbury Common fährt man mit GrayLine oder ShortLine Bussen.
Beide Touren dauern knapp eine Stunde Fahrtzeit. Woodbury Common lohnt sich sehr. Designer-​Marken zu günstigen Preisen.
Der Bus Port an sich ist sehr groß und dementsprechend unübersichtlich. Sowohl die Ticketcounter, als auch die Gates muss man etwas suchen. Am Besten man fragt gleich bei der Information, die helfen einem gerne weiter und es spart Zeit.

Ein riesiges Gewusel, logisch für einen so großen Umschlagplatz. Viel Polizeipräsenz, die eine gewisse Sicherheit vermuten lässt. Man sollte sich allerdings schon bei Ankunft relativ gut auskennen und wissen, wohin man möchte. Die Damen und Herren an den Auskunftsterminals sind nicht besonders service-​orientiert und geben nur die allernötigsten Antworten. Wirklich hilfreich ist das nicht.
Die Beschilderungen sind jedoch sehr großzügig und übersichtlich. Hat man also halbwegs nen Plan, geht auch nix schief.

Port Authority Bus Terminal — der New Yorker Busbahnhof ist der groesste in den Vereinigten Staaten. Mit ueber 20 Busunternehmen werden dort taeglich um die 200,000 Menschen bedient.
Das Layout kann etwas vewirrend wirken, man sollte sich vor der Abreise genuegend Zeit lassen zwecks Orientierung, vor allem zu Hauptverkehrszeiten.
Es gibt ein North Terminal und ein South Terminal, wobei die meisten der Geschaefte und Restaurants im South Terminal zu finden sind, ebenso wie fast alle Ticketschalter.
Auch gibt es eine kleine Postfiliale.
Die WCs sind sauber.
625 8^th Ave., zwischen den 40. und 42. Strassen, und der 8. und 9. Avenue.
Mit den U-​Bahn-​Linien A/​C/​E, N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, und 7 ist die Port Authority leicht von ueberall zu erreichen.
Soldaten und Polizisten sorgen mit staendiger Praesenz fuer Sicherheit, und das Fotografieren der Hallen ist aus diesem Grund nicht gestattet.
