Sadelle’s Bakery

Their gluten free bagels are the real deal! I’ve tried many others in NYC that were just generic bread with holes in the middle. Sadelle’s actually captures the crisp outside and chewy interior that I remember from my «normal» bagel days. The flavorful everything variety is completely covered in seeds, and the house smoked salmon complements it well.
The restaurant is more focused on stylish brunch than grab-​and-​go breakfast, but the bakery counter is still convenient. Staff seemed a little distracted and tended to congregate in the back — not sure if that changes as they get busier. I arrived shortly after they opened, but was told the GF bagels wouldn’t be ready for another 20 minutes.
GF bagels are kept in separate drawers away from the regular baked goods. Not sure about cutting board cross-​contamination since I was the first customer of the day.

One of the best bagels I’ve had here in NY! But the real star here is the house cured salmon, to die for. Service very attentive and knowledgeable. This was simply a very nice experience. The menu is brunch and the place looks very hipster gastropub ish’…Never heard of a breakfast/​bagel place that takes reservations, after going I see why. Upscale and a touch pretentious hence the 4 star not 5. The sticky bun is good not great, could have been warmer? Didn’t want to dress up to have bagels lox and coffee…

I dropped by during one of the first weekends after it opened, and they were out of bagels by 10:30am on a Sunday. While it wasn’t completely surprising given the amount of traffic and hype they’d received, I wished that they could have better predicted the demand on their star item. Instead I picked up a couple of their rugelach, which were admittedly delicious. The rest of the bakery goods looked standard. There was an impressive chocolate-​covered babka on display, if that’s your thing. I got the impression that this is good spot if you’re in the neighborhood but nothing special enough to come out of your way for.

Short: The bagels were somewhat small, but the house salmon and cream cheese were both incredible. Sadelle’s is pretty pricey – about $ 13 for a bagel, cream cheese, and lox. The restaurant is pretty small, so if you go on the weekend prepare for a wait. Four stars for taste, quality of product, and packaging of the bagel, lox, and cream cheese.
Long: I came here on a Sunday at 12:30 PM with a friend and the wait was 2.5 hours, so we decided to get our bagels to-​go from the counter on the left side of the restaurant. The restaurant is very pretty, but honestly seems somewhat overrated – I mean 2.5 hours?! That is crazy for bagels. By 12:30, selection was somewhat low (I am not sure if they restock throughout the day). I ordered a sesame seed bagel (they were out of everything and everything 2.0) with plain cream cheese and the house salmon. The bagel was somewhat small and was chewy, but there was a relatively thick crust in comparison to the bagel itself. The lox was amazing. It was smooth as butter and was incredibly fresh.
Since my friend and I didn’t actually dine in I would rate the bagel and lox itself at 4 stars. The wait time to sit and the price make it less of a must have, but if you are in the area and are craving a quality bagel I would definitely suggest stopping by. Even though the bagel was somewhat small it was filling and the lox is incredible. At $ 13 for a bagel and lox, Sadelle’s is not a place I would regularly dine but it is a great place to go for a yummy treat.

Had high hopes for this place after seeing the glowing article in Businessweek and seeing a line out the door one sunday afternoon. Dropped by early one weekday morning, and there was no line. Ordered an onion bagel with chives cream cheese, lox, tomatoes, onions, and capers (yeah we went all in) and it came out to be $ 13 so I split it with a friend. The bagel itself was yummy, and the ratio and arrangement of ingredients was on point. However, $ 6.50 for a measly half of a tiny bagel to begin with, hurt a little. I’d say it’s a good bagel, and a swanky place, but doesn’t live up to the hype.

Sadelle’s is house in a BEAUTIFUL space right in the heart of Soho. I went this past weekend after a barre class and picked up a bagel with lox and chocolate chip loaf to go. We had originally wanted to dine-​in, but as with any new Torrisi brother’s venture, it was packed and we were quoted a 1.5 hour wait at around noon on Saturday.
This bakery specializes in Jewish American classics, and there’s a wide selection of baked loaves and buns to choose from. A lot of the baked goods are not sold by the slice — we had wanted to try the chocolate babka but settled for the chocolate chip instead since that was available by the slice.
The loaf was good but the star was probably still the bagel. I would say it was almost like a cross between the HUGE doughy bagels you get at Ess-​a-​bagel and the flat Montréal-​style bagels at Black Seed. It was just the right amount of chewy, and the bagels are baked fresh every 30 mins or so. I had the chive cream cheese with lox and there was a generous amount of fish in there.
At $ 12 for a bagel and $ 3+ for a loaf this place isn’t cheap since there’s definitely a premium for the ambiance, but still worth checking out if you’re in the area and want a quick breakfast to go.

Wow, this venue is BEAUTIFUL with high ceilings. Great and lively atmosphere if you are dining in. Everyone here is incredibly friendly and sweet.
I came here to grab a loaf of their famous chocolate babkas for $ 15. I was able to grab one of their last loaves on a Saturday afternoon back in early/​mid September.
I really wanted to like the babka but it was dry and tasteless, highly overrated. My foodie friend (who loves the babka at Breads Bakery) was disappointed.

Hello I’m Karen and I’m a bagelaholic.
Three stars, three comments:
1. Bagels are on point — their everything is EVERYTHING. Both top and bottom are decked out in everything bagel goodness. Especially enjoyed the salt crystals. Perfectly chewy, just the right size, and toasted to perfection. This is what everything bagel dreams are made of.
2. Chive cream cheese and scottish salmon — I can’t say it was bad… but i do find their competitor (R&D) better. The flavor of the chive CC and the scottish salmon — very high quality but the depth of flavor just did not compare.
3. Very expensive.
This is not your average bagel grabbing establishment. I get it — the place is beautiful and the rent must be high… but $ 8 for a side of avocado? WHAT?! You can only imagine how things go up from there…
Oh Sadelle’s, I’ll come back and sit down if I celebrate some spectacular bagelversary of some kind… but until then I’ll just grab an occasional take-​away everything bagel and relish in this one time visit.

Awesome bagels and breads and cakes and smoked fish, but repugnant service! I was waiting in line behind a lady who wasn’t given a number or a receipt, and the woman behind the counter refused to give the customer anything without a receipt or a number even though it was she who had forgot to give these things to the customer, meanwhile she was saying the downright most disgusting comments and remarks to the customer (who was a polite, disabled elderly lady) which were not just condescending and inappropriate but also incredibly mean and unforgivable. Then when it was my turn, the woman behind the counter said «What do YOU want!» as if I had done something wrong, which I definitely didn’t, and when I asked if they were out of anything, she yelled JUST TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT, I said Pumpernickel Everything, and she said WE DONT GOT THAT, and I asked what DO they have and she said JUST TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT and I said Everything Bagel with Salmon and Chive and Tomato, she said THERE IS NO TOMATOES, I said then Capers please, she threw my receipt at me, scoffed and laughed at me when I didn’t leave her a tip, then when my order was ready they just threw it on the counter and said HERE, no bag or napkin or anything, and of course they gave me a Plain Bagel rather than the Everything Bagel I ordered, but the sandwich itself was without a doubt the best Salmon Chive Caper bagel I’ve ever ever ever had.

First time going to SoHo on my stay! Found this place onthe internet last night and chose this place to have a salmon bagel!
It opened recently and all the interior was fancy
I ordered a everything bagel toasted with house salmon and cream cheese to go! The bagel is smaller than the usual bagels but it was a perfect size to fit in my mouth!
The first bite said it all! It was just perfect for me and it was all gone in a minute =)
It was my first bagel in the city and will come back!

The food is good but they have some weird logistical issues.
Arrived at 7:50 on a Sunday, they open at 8am. About 10 people in line. There is only one cashier so I waited about 15 minutes to get to the register/​order area. The cashier gave us a number and it turns out she gave us the number for the order before ours. She was a bit disorganized.
Also, there is a huge dining room, which does not open until 9am. The entire dining room staff including hostesses were there and in place so it was very odd that it did not open until an hour after the bagel counter opened. I would have paid more for table service, to have been able to have a place to sit while eating.
Back to to food: The guys who make the bagel sandwiches and slice the fish are fantastic and very organized unlike the cashier. I especially liked the smoked salmon (in a bagel sandwich) and the cinnamon raisin bagels. The smoked salmon tasted very rich — like Acme’s Belly Lox– even though it was sliced very thin. The cinnamon raisin bagel had raisins that had been presoaked so they were very juicy and plump.

Wow. I felt that writing this review as soon as I tried the plethora of goods that I purchased at Sadelle’s this morning was exigent. After each bite, I kept saying out loud, «This is so disappointing. Did they run out of sugar or something?» Is it possible that a babka enveloped in a lair of chocolate could be this tasteless?
I arrived at Sadelle’s around 8:30 and the line was slightly out the door. I was probably 10 people from the front. I did not get to the front until 9:15. The funny thing about the line was that it grew to a point, and although it was not moving, enough people exited the line from frustration such that it maintained a fairly consistent length. Once we made it to the front, our hunger bested us so we ordered one of everything. We spent over $ 50 just on baked goods.
We sampled every baked good, but to illustrate the experience, I only need to discuss the cheese danish. It looks appetizing in appearance albeit a bit small. Yet, upon biting into it, it simply lacks any notable rich cheese flavor one would expect, in fact, it was tasteless. Honestly, I found myself sentimentally yearning for the Entenmann’s cheese danish of my youth. While beautiful, the devoid flavor profile was reminiscent of a movie a prop (or a poor actor). Unfortunately, this was quintessential of each baked good at Sadelle’s, save for the sticky bun. That coupled with above average bagels saves this from being a 1 (or 0) star review.
I’ve been to every Torrisi/​Carbone group establishment, and this was definitely the biggest let down. Often they push the envelope or do something new with each establishment, but this just seems like complacency and poorly executed «high end» homage to the classic NY appetizing store. Frankly, it seems like they are just riding on the coattails of their more worthwhile restaurants.
I just want a Breads Bakery babka right now.

Luckily, I didn’t experience the long wait like most some Unilocalers have. I arrived at 7:30AM expecting a line for what I thought was their 8AM opening time, but it was open and I walked right in!
The menu is short sweet and to the point. I ordered an everything pumpernickel with lox, tomato, onions, and capers.
A few minutes later, my order came out in a cute to-​go bag.
The bagel itself was good, but small. A tad overpriced at $ 13+ but I’ll chalk that up to NYC pricing as well as the smoked salmon.
I could definitely recreate this at home, but still a nice treat every once in awhile.

I came last Friday around 2pm on the hunt for Chocolate Babka. I’d seen the photos popping up on food blogs so I had to have some. My plan was to share with my coworkers in order to keep my inner fatass in check. When I arrived there wasn’t much of a line and the bakery items had been depleted. They only had a few cookies and cakes left. The girl behind the counter told me they sold out of babka at 10am. I guess that teaches me to never go on the Friday before a Jewish holiday. Anyway, they still had some chocolate pecan cookies left so I took 10 back to my team. The girl was sweet in only charging me for 6 since I didn’t get any babka. Major points on that.
The cookies did not last long around my team. They were seriously some of the best cookies I’ve ever had and they all agreed. The cookies were soft, had the consistency of a brownie, and I swear I tasted a hint of caramel. I’m planning to go back for the babka and this time I’m getting there early! I also can’t wait to try brunch.

I went with a coworker on the 2^nd day after opening at around 9:00am. The line was already out the door but didn’t look too bad so we got right on. I think there were about 10 – 15 people in front of us on line, with some people waiting on the side after they’ve ordered. At first, we thought we’d be in and out in 30 minutes but after the first 15 mins and the line still didn’t move an inch, we knew it’d be at least an hour.
You order everything at the register — coffee and pastries you get on the spot. The sandwiches you wait on the side for — they give you a number and someone calls when your order is ready. When you get closer to the counter area, you get to watch the guys cut the salmon and oogle the baked goods.
I ordered a chocolate chip loaf slice and a fruit danish to-​go so the Boyfriend could try it when we met up later. He’s not a danish or sweets guy, but he demolished the danish! They used a fruit reduction instead of jam, which was really nice. I also split the Oatmeal Cookie and Sweet Bun with my coworker — both were amazing. The Sweet Bun was flakey on the inside and the oatmeal cookie was super soft.
I had the onion bagel with chive cream cheese and lox. Total was $ 12 — kind of pricey for a breakfast sandwich but it was delicious! The cream cheese was loaded with chopped up chives and the lox was smooth and salty. Their bagels are baked fresh every 20 minutes so you’re guaranteed a good bagel at any time you go.
Beware of the line — it is deceiving. There are only two people making bagel sandwiches with one toaster so it will take a while for your sandwich to be ready.

The manager reached out to me apologizing and offered me to come by to skip the line for the bagel done right.

For the amount of time I waited for the bagel and money I spent I expected my order to be right.
Excited by the hype I went this afternoon to grab a bagel. There was line about 15 people long. After waiting roughly 30 minutes to order (yes that’s about 2 minutes per person JUST to order) I was pleasantly surprised that my $ 15 bagel was ready quickly after I placed the order. I got back to my office to discover that my bagel was missing the lox (the main ingredient). So I paid $ 15 for a bagel that was missing the star ingredient. I’m furious that I waited and did not receive the right order. I am still waiting for the management to get back to me.

It’s the second day of business and it already takes an hour minimum from the time you get on line (which will be out the door at 8:30am) to getting your bagel. And it’s totally worth it.
This was actually without a doubt the best bagel I’ve ever had. They’re smaller than the usual bagels but I’m grateful for that because it was just the right amount of food when loaded up with lox and all the other fixings. The lox is amazing. The rugelach is amazing. Everything is amazing.
The space is huge and super nice. Only negative is they’ve got some dripping air conditioning vents that you have to watch out for when you’re waiting in line, but I’m sure they’ll sort that out soon. The staff is incredibly professional and personable; they threw in not 1, not 2, but 3 extra rugelach for me to try. A++
Go for the gold: toasted everything bagel loaded up with lox, cream cheese, onions, and tomatoes. It’ll be $ 12 entirely well spent.

The line was out the door. We waited half an hour for a $ 15 everything 2.0 bagel with chive cream cheese + Smoked scottish salmon. It was really good, but it wasn’t $ 15 good. 4 stars for flavor, 3 stars for value.
Every time a stick of freshly baked bagels emerged from the back, the staff would all yell, «Hot bagels!» That was fun to watch.

The Torrisi Brothers are genus, expanding their Italian American comfort into Jewish American classics. Bagels are hot! At the soft opening hot bagels are greeted with hot bagel shout outs by the staff– love it! This is an elegant spot like Kutschers Tribecca was and the bagels are small, crunchy and outstanding! Lox is smoked in house natch– and is delicately flavored.
The baked goods in general looks amaze. Particularly outstanding was the chocolate chip loaf. Perfection! On to my tuna sandy. Did I mention bagels are $ 2 each– perfection has a price. The onion bagel elevates this sandwich classic. The tuna itself was pedestrian, but the small crisp bagel took it to a whole other level. Just in time for the Jewish holidays.

Get in line now. Excellent bagels and surprisingly even better cookies.
The bagels are on the small side ($ 2 each) a la a Black Seed and the cookies are on the incredible, super soft and chewy side. Even the Oatmeal Raisin is excellent ($ 2).
Unfortunately they already were out of he Everything and Everything 2.0, but the Pumpernickel Everything with Salmon and Cream Cheese was perfect ($ 12).
Also, the Chocolate Babka was incredible ($ 15). Very different from the current champion Breads Bakery, as this one is coated in chocolate and is a bit fluffier and softer. Definite contender.
