Booked an appointment on Monday for Wednesday 10:15 took a 45 min subway out to sadly find the place closed. Tried calling multiple times with no answer. So I ended up having to go elsewhere.

Jack is the man!
He’s literally the best hairdresser for thick asian hair. I was referred to him by someone else and fell in love with his talent. We exchanged numbers so that I’m able to text him questions I have regarding hair care and setting up appointments.
Prices are incredibly affordable — never has a basic cut run more than $ 40, with tip included. Clean salon and prompt service; I can’t recommend this place enough!

It took me a while to marinate this review after my experience. So I came here about two months ago for a haircut. I had tons of split ends and I told Jack to go crazy. I wasn’t attached to the length of my hair and wanted all the split ends GONE. Now I don’t know if it’s just me but when he washed my hair and saw that it was curly, he kind of freaked out. He literally was like «Oh… you’re hair is really curly. I’ll be right back». He went outside smoked a cigarette. When he came back, I could tell he was really uncomfortable with the texture of my hair which made me SUPER uncomfortable but I saw some his past work and put faith in his hands.
The cut was actually pretty good. He took his time and made sure he covered every area. Everything was going swell until he decided to flat iron my hair vs. blow drying. I should of said something in the beginning but I didn’t think he was going to flat iron EVERY SINGLE STRAND OF HAIR. I have thick wavy/​curly hair so it took about an hour. After he was finished he cut off some of the strands that were uneven. I have NEVER seen my hair that straight in my entire life. I was soooooooo angry. What made it worst was his response afterwards, «…you look different» UM YEA .
I was already running late for an event other wise I would of made him fix it. He could tell I was upset and said that when I washed it, my hair would go back to normal. It was so straight, I didn’t think it would.
If you have natural straight hair, you will have no problem in this salon however, if you’re like me and you have natural curly hair. Avoid at all costs.

I have had my hair cut and blown out by Wendy twice and both times the cut and blow out were fabulous. I showed Wendy pictures of what I wanted — the long, layered, wavy look — and not only did she do a phenomenal job, but also she cut it in a way where my hair grew out beautifully so the second time I only needed a minimal trim to keep the look healthy.
In addition to the great hair cut and blow out, the service here is fabulous. The whole salon has a friendly environment and everyone pays attention to even little details: when my hair is washed the person is gentle and even cleans the bottom part of my scalp (I think we’ve all been to salons where they don’t exactly clean your hair), and when my wet hair is brushed out they are also gentle.
I’m so happy to have finally found a salon that has talented hairdressers, great service, and great prices!

Came here impulsively last year because my friends were desperate to get their hair dyed. I arrived not wanting to dye my hair because I wanted to go to a better reviewed place but after watching the stylist and my friends nonstop nagging, I gave in. On their pricing list in the front it says that double process highlights were about $ 80 so I was like okay sure I’ll try this.
Scissors is a small salon in chinatown and the salon is held up by two stylists and one assistant. We came in a pack of four and Jack was the stylist for all four of us. I showed him a picture of the balayage I wanted and specifically asked for no yellow and he started working. He suggested that I also dye the top/​roots of my hair so there won’t be a huge contrast between my tips and my roots. Okay, fine I let him do what he suggested. The process took a good 5 – 6 hours. In the end hah, what do I get? YELLOW BRASSY HAIR. I went to pay and was hit with a $ 195 bill. So here’s the breakdown: $ 80 for the double process highlights +$ 10 for long hair, $ 65 for dyeing my roots +$ 10 for long hair, $ 35 for washing and drying my hair.
My complaints:
1. Why was I charged twice for having long hair? I only have one set of long hair.
2. Jack persuaded me into dyeing the top of my head WITHOUT informing me that that will be counted as another process and will be charged extra. Can’t assume I know and can’t suggest it like it’s nothing.
3. Look at my pictures and you’ll see how horrible the end results came out to be. Asked for a balayage and got an ombré (in which Jack insisted that the picture I showed him was an ombré)
My friends ended up spending ~$ 125 to get their full head dyed (wtf?, unreasonable and when one of them went to another salon a few months later, thought she dyed it herself bcus it was so horribly done) and I spent ~$ 250 that day. I know that this process is supposed to cost around that much but I couldve spent the same amount of money at a much better salon for a way better end result. I ended up being really unsatisfied and called them back to fix my hair (in which the lady told me would be free of charge aka I don’t have to pay anything that day). I was about to leave the salon after the adjustment until they stopped me to pay them $ 35 for washing my hair. I was baffled. Although the fixed result was better than what I had orginally received, I wont ever be coming back.
This place is just a small salon in Chinatown trying to present themselves skillful.

Recommend for a cut, do not recommend for color.
I really didn’t want to leave this review, but I came in to get my roots done and they turned out orange. I came back in to get it fixed and not only did they charge me to fix it, it still didn’t fix the problem… They still don’t match the rest of my hair. Their reasoning for charging me was that I needed to pay for the shampoo… Which I wouldn’t have needed if I didn’t have to come back in because they messed up the color. Plus, he didn’t even condition my hair the second wash.
That being said, I would recommend them for a cut, and they did a very good job with that. I can tell they work really hard 7 days a week so I’m sorry to leave this. I was looking for any reason not to leave a negative review. I just hope no one else pays $ 200 over the course of 2 coloring appointments to be unhappy with their hair color.

I have FINALLY found a salon/​stylist I want to come back to!
I had booked an appointment for a coloring job with Jack to fix a previous salon’s mistakes. He sat with me and explained to me all the options I had while being very educating, but not condescending.
After we decided on what we wanted to do, Jay, another stylist, came by and helped with the process of applying the dye to my hair. When it came time to wash out the dye, Jay made sure to confirm with Jack (who was working on another client, which was fine with me!) that the color was right but Jack decided to leave it in for a little bit longer and in the end the color came out much much much better than what I had left the previous salon with!
He also gave me a great cut that turned out to be extremely more flattering than what I originally had. Usually I don’t make last minute decisions like that, but when he suggested more layers, I gave him a chance and let him do what he thought would be better and I’m so glad I did! It was a small difference that I wouldn’t have been able to tell if he hadn’t pointed it out and he was incredibly meticulous about it and made sure every strand of hair was perfect.
All in all, I had an absolutely wonderful time at this salon with Jack and Jay! I highly recommend it and look forward to when my hair grows out so I can come back!!!

I had high hopes for this place after reading the great reviews and seeing — but I walked out completely disappointed.
Came here on a weekday at 2pm for a cut & color. It was my first time coloring my hair (virgin jet-​black Asian hair) and I didn’t really know what to expect. I called to make an appointment (no problem there) but then never received a confirmation or anything. Plus they didn’t ask what type of color process I want/​needed.
When I arrived for my appt, I told Jack I was interested in doing a ash brown/​blonde ombré. Because I had never dyed my hair before (and it was naturally very dark), he told me that it wouldn’t be possible to do such a drastic transformation in one sitting. Instead, he suggested that I change the base color first and lighten my hair color. Trusting his opinion I agreed but told him very explicitly that I didn’t want it to be too orange/​brassy. He went off to mix the color without really giving me an idea of what it would look like. After he applied the color I sat for ~1hr waiting (while he did a cut and blow out on another client). Finally when he was ready to wash/​rinse, he then did my cut and styling. The cut turned out really nice and I was happy with it BUT I could immediately tell that the color was exactly what I wanted to avoid! Super brassy from roots to ends! Total it cost me 4 hours of my time and $ 118 ($ 39 for cut, $ 79 for color), not including tip.
Jack told me that I would need to let my roots grow out for 2 – 3 months and said to come back in April/​May when he could then do the ombré (presumably blending my natural hair color with the brassy brown and then the ash ombré).
I slept on the advice but woke up the next morning, seeing the full extent of the color in the daylight, and was completely mortified by the idea of having to walk around like this for another few months! So I made an appointment at my usual salon (Shampoo Avenue B, highly recommend, they’re amazing!!) for a color consultation. I told my stylist exactly what happened and that I needed to know my options for correcting the color. Thankfully, she was able to do a single process to change my roots back to my natural color. Now it looks so much better and I don’t have to wait 2 – 3 months before going back to do a ombré or balayage.
BOTTOM LINE: The prices are good and for a regular hair cut I would probably recommend this place. But my advice to those seeking color (particularly first timers), do your research! A good salon should offer you a color consultation (in-​person or over the phone) BEFORE you commit to the actual appointment. That way you’re confident that they can do exactly what you’re looking for, and if not, then you didn’t waste your time or money.

TLDR: Jack is excellent about giving you an on-​point feedback on your hair and makes sure you leave happy. Recommended!
My long hair was getting out of control, so I wanted to do the whole new place, new me and new hair thing after I moved to NYC. Not going to lie, when I first saw Jack, I was a bit skeptical since he looked so young! However, when he said «Let’s see what kind of hair you have,» I was assured he knew what he was doing. (Once upon a time, $ 100 high-​end salon stylist messed up my hair because she didn’t know what kind of hair I had. And that experience traumatized me and I was afraid to cut my hair ever again. So it’s kind of a big deal to me that he first analyzed my hair before doing anything else.)
I had some idea of what I wanted, but he advised me on a different cut because he said that the one I wanted would grow out weirdly and that I would need another haircut after awhile to correct it. He also reassured me that if I didn’t like the way it looked after few days, I could come back to get it done again. So I took my courage and proceeded to go cut 30inches of my hair, and I am glad I went with his suggestion because after few months, my hair is still lookin’ fiine!
Pro-​tips:
–Make sure to make an appointment.
–They accept cards, but it’s better to bring cash (then it’d be a bit cheaper).
–Make sure to rally all your concerns and wants to your hairstylist
–He also does amazing colors!
Overall, after having many traumatizing haircuts, I was happy I was able to get an awesome cut from Jack. He is definitely my go-​to person for a haircut now :) Plus, their services are totally affordable!

Lam saved my hair. I was in dire need of a trim because it was appearing very dry so my ends needed to be chopped. I searched high and low for a salon that was reasonable priced along with top notch reviews. This was probably the 30^th salon I came across on Unilocal and was drawn in by the recent 5 star reviews. I showed Lam what I wanted, asked a few questions, and everything was delivered. I definitely don’t mind coming back again.

This is my first Unilocal review I’ve ever written, and hopefully the last horrifying hair experience I’ll ever have to document. I don’t even know who cut my hair, no idea what his name was. He did a fairly decent job cutting it, I suppose, however I’m pretty sure all that could’ve gone wrong… went wrong.
My hair was already blonde. I needed a root touch up for sure, but what I REALLY wanted was a platinum color. I showed him a photo of Emma Stone but he was reluctant because of the poor condition of my hair. I was fine with it, I totally understood. He told me then that he would fix my roots, cut off about an inch (also fine) and make the color a bit more ashy with a toner.
He did a great job cutting my hair, I was actually really impressed by how in the zone he was. The wash was even decent! Things got pretty awful when I sat back down to rinse out the foil and the washer was applying the toner. He literally handed me a piece of tissue to cover my nose with, warning me about how strong the smell was. I’m truly not exaggerating, the smell was unbearable. It was so bad I was coughing in the chair, switching between covering my mouth and my nose. It was like nothing I had ever experienced, and I’ve been coloring/​dyeing my hair for years now. When the smell somewhat subsided, he dropped dye into my eye. INTO MY EYE. He wiped this hellish smelling product off the right side of my right eye, and was kind of laughing it off. «Sorry» he said.
My eye was burning, I was trying not to panic. Until I looked in the mirror and saw my «ashy» blonde hair look almost like a replication of this emoji’s hair color -. My hair was yellow. I waited for him to blow it out. I also took some breaks to rinse my eye out. It looked better, but I was also distracted by my anxiety. They ended up taking off $ 10 from the wash job because of the whole dye in the eye issue. However, I’m still over here with yellow hair.
Really so bad, I genuinely never though I’d ever have to write something like this. Safe to say I will not be back at this salon.

I put off getting a haircut because I’m living off student loans and couldn’t afford one. However, my ends were getting atrocious, and it was either spend the money or cut it myself. I think I’ll spend the money.
I made the appointment about three hours before. No problem.
Tapping into my precious loans was well worth it! The shampoo was not rushed at all. It was very relaxing and felt great. Their shampooing stations are extraordinarily comfortable. It didn’t hurt my neck like most places.
The man who cut my hair (Lam) did an incredible job as well. He radiated confidence. I gave him minimal directions and let him do his thing. What was most impressive for me is that he styled my hair with only a brush and blowdryer, virtually no product (that I remember). I’ve never seen a stylist do this before, and I’ve never seen my hair cooperate so well. Furthermore, this is the first time that I’ve gotten bangs and not hated them. I love ‘em!
And perhaps most importantly, NO SMALL TALK. Lam let me sit in comfortable silence with my own happy thoughts and didn’t force me to have a conversation. It’s an introvert’s paradise. :D
Overall, my cut was $ 39 before tip. I will definitely be back.

Been growing out my hair for an undercut to a Pompadour and sometimes I even tie it up like a mini-​ponytail.
Unfortunately one side if the hair is extremely short compare to the rest of the hair. Jack gave me his honest and most professional advice and told me to leave the side out growing. He said It will be a gruesome 5 months till the side grow out yo match the rest of the longer hair. He did his best to cut it in a way where I can still style it without looking too «weird».
Definitely an amazing stylist, takes his time, give customers satisfying results, and cuts precisely.

Lam took great care of me! I went in for a pretty big color change. I have shoulder length naturally dark brown/​black hair and I wanted to get blonde ombré. I’ve had ombré before but it was from a little salon in Flushing that didn’t do a fantastic job.
Lam was super nice, friendly, and efficient. The cut is FANTASTIC but the color could be better. I think the bleach was left on way too long since Lam cut someone else’s hair while it was on. There are two tiger stripes on one side, and some spotty areas on the other side. I’m going to call and see if he can fix it for me since I’m not super satisfied.
Overall I’m a fan — I know they’re busy so I don’t expect 100% attention, and I’m certain that they can make this work.
I highly recommend!

I hate cheating on my current salon but when money is tight these days, you have no choice but to find a place that does hair and/​or color well and at a great value. Thanks to fellow Unilocalsters, I was able to find this place and I was very pleased.
I made an appt. to have my hair cut with Jack but since I arrived a little early, he was still busy with a current client, so I opted to have my hair cut with Lam. Honestly, no regrets. I’m sure Jack would’ve been great as well but Lam was an incredible hair magician. I came in looking like the girl from The Ring and came out looking like I had Jessica Alba hair. I showed him a picture of what I was aiming for (the ever trending Lob) and he interpreted it very well! He even showed me how to style my hair to achieve the look with minimal effort — exactly what I needed. You can also tell how meticulous and detail oriented he was ensuring that the cut was perfect both when wet and when dry.
All of the staff members seemed very friendly and the seats to get your hair washed are super comfy! The guy who washes your hair is also very thorough and gives a pretty decent scalp massage. I do like the smaller salon set up as it doesn’t feel so overwhelming and that everything was straight to the point. I think I was only there for less than 1 hour.
On top of this, the price is just right at approx. $ 45 for a wash, cut and blow dry (though they do let you know that the price is dependent on your hair length). I’m an absolute fan and will be coming back!

These guys are about as good as it gets.
I’m quite pleased i broke up with my stylist of 15 years, because now i have Jack. His work is immaculate — he’s the kind of man easily trusted to simply do what he thinks best. The shampoo guy was incredible as well.

Life was giving me a bunch of sour lemons until I happened to stumble across Scissors Salon where I met Jack, my stylist. Two weeks prior, I had stopped by a different shop, asking for an ombré (first time doing something with my virgin hair). Let’s just say, it turned out to be a nightmare, and that it was done so poorly, I had to wear my hair up (I never wear my hair up). The first photo was the before.
Anyways, back to Scissors. When I had first walked in, I found myself in a haven of a small, yet beautiful and seemingly trustworthy salon. I was introduced to Jack, who had asked and listened to what I would like him to do for me. Showing him pictures, he instantly knew what he needed to do, but he also warned me that it would take time (turned out to be 5 hours) in order to achieve it. Throughout the long process, Jack and his helper, another stylist, made sure that I was comfortable, asking me if I wanted a magazine and creating conversations. And observing as other clients came in, I knew that these stylists do want to know their clients on a comfortable and casual level.
The final outcome of my hair was done so beautifully and well that I now cannot believe that I hadn’t found Scissors any sooner! Jack, thank you for making me to trust you in your work and for giving me such a beautiful hair transformation that I had to write my first Unilocal review! ^_^

I stumbled upon this place early this summer, asked if they take walk-​ins for a quick trim, didn’t expect much but walked out with a complete new hairstyle and color. Absolutely loved it. Ever since this has been my favorite salon.
Jack is my stylist and he does an amazing job every time. I recently got a new color from him. I’ve always wanted to go platinum blonde but always hesitated whether the color will come out as I expected. The results were absolutely gorgeous. Jack did a great job and I couldn’t have been happier with my new look.

I love coming to New York for two reasons: food and beauty. Whenever I plan a trip to NY, I always turn to Unilocal to help me find the next best haircut.
A little research on Unilocal,fueled with excitement from the photos other users posted and a phone call to the salon, I had a next day appointment with Jack.
The salon was fairly easy to find. It’s a small shop and it gets busy, I mean people are coming in and out constantly. I was seated, waited for 10 minutes before being shampooed and then combed through. Jack was finishing up another client and then came over to me.
I told him I wanted to keep the length as much as possible, and he said he would just cut off the bottom which was getting stringy from all the layers and thinning out from my previous cut. He really listened to me and what I wanted. He listens so much that he cut off the stringy ends and then actually went ahead and blow dried my hair, straightened it and then cut it dry, just to ensure that we kept the length. How many stylists take that extra step? Not any that I’ve ever had.
Cut came out amazing, and he then styled it as you can see in the photo. I am happy with the final result, and really impressed by how important the customer is here.
I have long hair, prices are very fair. I paid about $ 50 for wash, cut and, style. You’re getting a lot of bang for your buck.

Waltzed into this salon just looking for a trim, and looked on Unilocal for some guidance. Luckily, Jack was free at this time and cut my hair. He was super knowledgeable about my hair — pegged that it was thick, heavy, how long ago I cut it, what my last hair stylist did, how long ago I dyed it IMMEDIATELY, and how to remedy those corresponding things. The haircut was great; Jack and the washer gave excellent service.
He curled my hair afterwards, and I wasn’t too fond about that (but I just personally have medium length hair and it becomes pretty short when curled).
