Sean Shapiro has been working as a freelance photojournalist and event photographer for the past five years. He loves to capture candid moments on the streets of New York City where he currently lives. His clients include Penn State University, New York University, Discovery Times Square, TRUE Model Management, Sparkology, and Manhattan Roller Hockey League among others.
His most recent project, «Art Over War,» focuses on internationally renowned street and graffiti artists as they painted abandoned tanks and military buildings within a ten minute walk of active fighting of the Syrian Civil War in Quneitra. By capturing the artists’ work to transform objects of war into works of art, Sean hopes to bring awareness to the war and its effect on surrounding communities. Among the sites visited by the group were an abandoned hospital destroyed by rockets, an Israeli community that endures sounds of bombing and artillery fire on a daily basis, and a Syrian tank left behind from the Six-Day War.
Sean’s work has appeared in Gothamist, Business Insider, BuzzFeed, The Jerusalem Post, The Daily Collegian, and Time Out New York to name a few publications. He has also self-published a photography book, Strength After Sandy, which depicts the devastation and rebuilding effort of New York City in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
