I’d much rather try South Brooklyn Pizza than Sour Broccoli Pizza. Or Smashed Bottle Pizza. Or «Sounds Boring Pizza» which is how most pizzas outside the North East US and Chicago sound to me. The irony of South Brooklyn Pizza, this location anyway, is that it is not in Brooklyn. It’s in Manhattan’s East Village. Tragically, this slice, which was the second best I ever had on Manhattan Island, has vanished from the radar. SBP has closed down. But there is some good news. SBP exists in 5 other locations, all in — you guessed it — Brooklyn. They all have much lesser ratings, but I’ll go to the original and try a slice at some point soon, to see if it matches up with the amazing slices that were served here. Why did I love this pizza? (1) It was open incredibly late… 3am or 4am or something. (2) Their«arugula slice» was heaven… one of the best slices I ever had in NYC. (3) The slice was huge, hot, fantastic. (4) The guys inside were friendly, and recommended the Arugula slice, and they were damn right. Why did I not love it? (1) They didn’t have any arugula the second time. (2) It’s not a cheap slice. (3) The sausage slice I got the second time around wasn’t as good. (4) They closed down and now I can’t go back for another try. Very sad whenever a great place is gone, but in this case, at least the guys have all their Brooklyn locations intact, which I’ll try soon. And if, instead of South Brooklyn Pizza, it were«Mouth Boobies Pizza» then(a) it’d be a strip club and(b) it’d probably still be in business.

I’m sad to see this go: It was the best pizza by the slice in all of East Village, perhaps even in Manhattan. Your crisp slices accompanied by your complimentary jar of roasted garlic will be terribly missed.

The perils of being behind on reviews is that this place is closed since the time I visited. That’s too bad, because the margarita pizza was a solid, quintessentially New York slice. There was only table with a small counter and lots of lots of wood. It was dark, even during the daytime, although the Latino chef were quite friendly. The place was solid, but I’m sure in a location where rising rents and tons of competition were factors against continuing. Thankfully there are still Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens and Park Slope locations to frequent for the experience.

One of my favorite pizza places in the city! This place is too cool to even have a proper sign at the front of the door, count the street number, squint your eyes and you know you’ve arrived. They only have one pizza on their menu, yeah, they are also too cool like that. That being said, each bite is fantastic, you have the right amount of tomato, the bread is great, the crust is thin enough, the cheese is very fine, it’s garlicky, olive oily, add some mushroom and pancetta, fresh basil leaves, it’s a trip to pizza heaven. That’s a pie that will make Italian jealous. It’s a pie that make New York City proud! And the garlic knots are not just garlic, they have spices, basil and some sort of magic. If the pie is heaven, these knots are the gold handles of the front door. Best. Pizza. Ever. Ps: don’t take your date, you will find yourself with grease stains on your shirt and a garlic breath(it’s all worth it)

As stated in my other pizza reviews, I am sort of a «healthy eater» so pizzas aren’t always high on my list. That said, a great slice is a great slice and many would agree South Brooklyn sliced border on «epic». This place was recommended by a friend when I had guests in town. We tried South Brooklyn and it lived up to its billing as my pizza connoisseur pals will fully attest. The slices are large. The margherita features rich cheese, quality ingredients, a one-of-a-kind New York-style crust and beautiful slices of tomato. This is a stand in the classic sense of the word, set in the heart of the East Village. Come for the experience alone. While the slices are a touch pricey, you’d be wise to try it while out and about enjoying the village on a warm night.

By most far the best pizza in NY — it’s thin and the crust is amazing, the olive oil is ridiculous tasty — it’s always fresh — the mozzarella cheese is amazing — they got crashed garlic as side — amazing The only down side there is the guy who works there(foreign accent — not Spanish) Has serious attitude issues… Other than that, you can’t find any better pizza in NYC

It’s amazing how many great little hole in the wall places are missed, even by Unilocal if you’re looking for the right thing. We were in the neighborhood, waiting for a to go order at Momofuku noodle bar, since it was packed and decided to grab some pizza. South Brooklyn Pizza just happened to be one of the places I found on Unilocal that was the closet. It is small, one table, location with some bar top table space. The pizza is freshly made. We had their Margherita pizza(REALLYGOOD) and we also had something else that was pretty good, came in a square shape pizza form. It was a nice touch that they had some roasted mashed garlic and spicy peppers made available. You can just scoop it yourself. 4 slices in total came to about $ 18, a little pricey but it was tasty.

The king is here! Dam this place has done it! It’s now the best in nyc. Hopefully it does not go the way of precious holders of the belt… That’s is to start relying on reputation and not quality of product. Don’t forget to spread some of the yummy complimentary garlic spread.

When I was planning my NY trip, of course I did my research on pizza. Most people suggested Grimaldi’s, but my NY friend insisted that South Brooklyn Pizza was better. So we came here one night to get a slice of their New York Style Pizza: San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, grana padano, fontina, basil and olive oil. The pizza was good, but not what I was hoping for. The crust was too thick I felt for typical«New York style» pizza and I felt like the pizza was nothing special. I did like that they had roasted garlic available for customers to put on their pizza – that made it taste a lot better :) The restaurant is very small and there is basically just seating for two parties. There was just one guy working when we went there, but he seemed pretty nice. But for my next NY trip, I’m definitely checking out Grimaldi’s.

This place makes a mean slice. 5 stars for food quality, doc one star for the slowish service and a little too much«too cool for school» attitude. Splitting the meatball app is a great way to start, especially with the garlic garnish they give to every table. But the pizza is to die for. We’ve done the margarita, bacon and blue cheese, salmon(the Lower East Sider) and a few others and they’re all delicious. Personally I think the bacon and blue is good, but just a tad too heavy on the blue. Crust on all the pizzas is the perfect balance between crunch and delicious. Also a good selection of beers and wine. Some cool beers to try out I’d never run across before.

Came here late night with a couple of buddies. I had no idea this place even existed, much less a crowd favorite. Three of us decided to split a whole pie. This was a mistake. It took so long for them to give us a whole pie because they kept carving up fresh pies and selling them to people that were buying them by the slice. While our pie was fresh when it eventually got to us, the wait was a bit annoying. Had I not been drunk, I would likely have gone elsewhere. The pie, however, was quite delicious. The ingredients were so fresh, right down to the tomato sauce. It’s not over-salted like chain pizza. The dollops of mozzorella stretched into thin strings of gooey goodness. The crust was thin, as appropriate for a neopolitan pie. Would definitely come back again. Next time, however, I will learn my lesson and order by the slice.

Straight up NY pizza. No honey mustard, bacon, bbq chicken mumbo jumbo. Just plain and Sicilian slice. The crust is thin and crispy with the perfect amount of sauce and cheese. Topped with basil leaves which adds a simple yet welcome flavor. Not the cheapest slice, but still a damn good slice.

Open until 5am? Mhm. Perfectly thin and crisp in all the right places dough? You bet. Pancetta AND Chorizo on one slice to satisfy the toughest meat cravings? Check. Friendly staff that gave me an extra sliver of an end piece? SOLD! South Brooklyn Pizza came recommended by quite a few regulars and locals in the neighborhood, and for good reason. Check them out and you won’t be disappointed.

The good: flavorful sauce, cheese and basil. Tasty. The bad: the way too crispy, crunchy, flavorless crust that broke in half when folded. That’s why I wouldn’t return. For the $ 4 slice price tag– they need to make a better crust. And watch your change here — the guy ‘accidently’ gave back only 5 bucks in change when it should have been $ 12.

Umm, yes, that would be correct. So Brooklyn Pizza is located in the heart of the Village! End of the dinner service at Momofuku Ko… we are just kicking it with a chef and the pretty Chinese wine lady. Start talking about what we ate, what we will eat, what he eats, what he likes… Came upon reco from chef. Was so stinkin’ close to where Ko is too… awesome. Returned the next day and came for pizza perfection. Hands-down, best thin crust I had the pleasure of devouring, $ 4/margherita slice. Crust is incredibly thin, has a great light crunch to it when masticating, and yet, still how this airiness to its crust. Can’t figure it. as well, like the way the roller sides of pie has this more substantial lip to it. oooh… nice. Do add all of that delicious, sweet roasted garlic purée, and some sweet hot red pepper slices too! Melt in your mouthgasmic pizza. Look for the Kitchen Aid mixer in the window… and the flaming red doorframe. Nirvana is across the narrow threshold. Open til 0500 — lucky NY peeps. The eating is endless here!

3.75 Good slice for sure but for $ 4 it’s a little too light on cheese They keep it simple, 2 kinds of pies, thin & sicilian. if you want toppings you’re probably going to wait a while but you deserve to because the free fresh garlic & peppers are enuff Compared to Di Fara’s(from whom which they stole their recipe) it’s less greasy but has much less cheese, really no comparison actually If you’re in the area good luck finding this them because it’s super small with no sign

Margherita Pizza! There is no sign outside South Brooklyn Pizza, look for a red door. Seating is minimal, one small table and 2 chairs. There is some counter space. It smells amazing in here. They don’t have a menu, what you see is what you get. They offer 2 types of Pizza: Margherita and Sicilian. You have the option of getting a slice($ 4) or an entire pie. There is a bowl of complimentary fresh roasted garlic sitting on the front counter beside the pies. Definitely give that a try if you are a garlic fan. I love that the pizza here is fresh. The Margherita slice is memorable. The crust is perfect, slightly crisp around the edges with a perfect chew in the middle. Fresh ingredients. The tomato sauce was slightly tangy, sweet, and juicy. Out of this world. Quality mozzarella, Parmesan, and Basil are used. For a final touch, a light drizzle of olive oil. Drool. The gentleman behind the counter was super sweet and even took the time to hold a little convo with us. Definitely one of my favorite Pizza spots in the East Village.

Pizza seduction. No exterior signage. Just a red painted door and window frame. Looks like they are not open but they are. Until 5am to be exact. The inside is small with only one table for two. The only lighting was by two dimly lit lights and the light above the pizza. It was just enough light to notice the pizza slicer decorated ceiling. Margarita pizza had just came out of the oven. It looked gorgeous. It tasted perfect. It was exactly what I had been craving. Great crust, tomatoey fresh tomato sauce, the freshet basil softened from the oven just right and the mozzarella cheese and added parmesan cheese sprinkle was heavenly. $ 4 a slice for pizza perfection. South Brooklyn Pizza, you can seduce me any time.

A new pizza wagon rolls in from Brooklyn, and sets up shop a few blocks from Artichoke Basil. I spyed this pizza apres bratwurst at Wechsler’s down the block and it is a formidable slice. At $ 4 it is pricey though worth it. The square and round are thinner than the Artichoke with a crispy crust. I most enjoyed the crispy Margharita with a tasty sauce and lovely cheese and fresh basil. Friendly service offered a garlic knot to try which are bathed in olive oil and slighty spicy with crushed peppers. Decadent! The condiments bar(gratis) with crushed garlic, hot cherry peppers and grated cheese is what sets South Brooklyn Pizza apart.
