Step Into Salsa

While I loved the Zumba class and the instructors, the administration leaves a lot to be desired.
So, if you don’t mind a little «rude» treatment from the staff — this is the place to go, when everything else is full!

OMG so I planned a special day out for my babes and I and I wanted to do different things so after reading all of the great reviews on Unilocal I chose to come to iguana lounge. When we first got in we had to wait for about 10 mins. My Hun had no idea what I brought him there for. When it was time to start I started second guessing my decision but I can’t even describe to you how much fun we had. I could stop laughing through out the whole thing. It was exciting, lots of fun. Kevin was amazing. We rotated partners all night even though I didn’t want any of the other females holding on to my babes lol. He didn’t want to leave when it was finish. We def plan to come back again… It’s a must

Try to come early or you will miss the first steps and you’ll have a rough time catching up later on. Probably a good idea to have a strong drink at the bar before starting the class depending on how clumsy you are.
Class is good but Kevin moves a little fast in a group setting. This is understandable because of the time constraint. If the last time you danced Salsa was more than 2 years ago you might be better off getting a one on one session for individualized attention first. Learning the steps by yourself is one thing but adapting to several different individuals dancing style is something else! (Partners are rotated in the group class) There were 2 extra males in the beginning but then by the end there were about 2 extra females so it evens out if you are looking for a potential date.
The group was OK but honestly some girls were all over the place. Women — PLEASE for the love of God follow the man’s lead if he remotely knows what he is doing. Salsa is not a science and you don’t have to follow every exact step correctly on the first time. For example I forgot how a movement went that we were supposed to do (after not having even so much as thought about Salsa in over 2 years) so I improvised and did something similar. Instead of going with the flow she kept fidgeting trying to get the exact movement and we ended up facing the completely wrong direction. Had she just followed what I was doing it still would have looked correct. If I can BS on the job once in a while, why not in something creative like this? Give me a break.
Having said that I came with my GF who does some Zumba activities so she didn’t do too bad. However, she made the same error as the other woman but since she is my girlfriend I was able to threaten her with death if she did not do it my way. Maybe it would be a good idea to bring a female co-​worker so you can at least have some control over the situation.
The Bachata class is hard in my opinion, the rhythm seems more complicated than Salsa. So I would advise complete newbies to Latin Dance take the Salsa first before trying the other two.

I took this class 2 years ago. Kevin Lee definitely defies any preconceived stereotype. I have two left feet, but Kevin meticulously showed me how to dance. He occasionally brought his female assistant, a tall European-​looking girl, to class as well. The classes are usually 2 hours. Since I’m a male, I come to class to dance with women. If the weather is nice, the place is overflowing with women. However, if the weather is bad, then there are more men than women. There’s also a bar so if you’re not feeling the class, you can watch a basketball game and have a beer.

This place is usually ok but I’m giving this place a 2 because they almost never honor the admission fee that’s advertised online. More than once I’ve arrived expecting it to be free before a certain time only to have to pay $ 10. And more than once, like last night, I just left. There’s no way I’m paying $ 10 to nget in and $ 10 or more for drinks. If I’m a cheap bastard then I’m a cheap bastard.

ZUMBA. What an amazing class. I’m almost afraid to Unilocal about it in case the studio starts filling up too much! But just like all wonderful things that move me, I am inspired to Unilocal.Also, very few things can get me to leave the East Village (go cross town?! Never!), and every week, this is it.
Shari, the instructor, is the cutest, most energetic little firecracker of a dancer, and she works us HARD! As a non-​dancer, I have no problems following the choreography, but I still feel challenged with each new number that she introduces to the class.
The music is addictive, upbeat, and varied, and her choreography is so much fun! The studio is clean, and not too crowded. After an hour of booty-​shaking bliss, I always feel like I’ve burned 700 calories and dropped 5 pounds of sweat. An exaggeration? Who cares! At $ 10 a class, you certainly get more than your money’s worth, and leave feeling EXHAUSTED, smiling, and excited to come back again. Honestly, there is no form of exercise that I look forward to more.
Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 PM… 519 8^th Ave, 12^th floor. I guess it’s not my little secret anymore…

Boy can he dance and you will too if you attend his classes at the Iguana! You will find Kevin to be an easy going instructor with clear instructions and tons of patience and charisma. His classes are warm and fun and all students regardless of level practice with one another and lend support. New members are immediately welcomed into the family and are made to feel at home and at ease.
After a few classes, you will develop the confidence you need to try your newly acquired salsa moves at the next Latin party or lounge. You will also notice your legs becoming more tone and your behind might get a little boost! No one said dance classes were easy but they are certainly well worth it! Come and try it for yourself! You won’t regret it! :-)

This is a really great salsa class! Kevin is a very patient & clear instructor, but his classes are not only educational… they’re also really fun! You’ll meet new people and get a really good foundation in salsa dancing in his class. :)

My first visit was so great. I was a little timid about coming to this studio, but as soon as I walked in I was greeted by Kevin and kind enough to give me 1-​on-​1 lesson. I also heard their doing dance classes at Iguana which is great so I have the total experience of dancing in a real latin club. People here are awesome, beautiful young professionals and very friendly. Monthly membership is by far the lowest in the city. Overall… 5 star!

Kevin is a skilled and patient instructor. He is very involved and will spend time with you if you seem to be having trouble with the steps. His classes are fun and non-​intimidating for beginners. I made great progress taking his classes and met a lot of nice people along the way.

I love these Salsa New York classes. The very patient, but very clear Kevin has help me understand the role of being a leader in salsa dancing.
At the moment I arrive, I met friendly people learning to salsa from the very beginner to the more advance. I felt all are willing to work together to have fun while dancing to latin grooves.
This is one of those Summer things to do in the city. It’s so FUN!

Kevin is an amazing dance instructor! Very easy to follow along in basic salsa class, and throws in a little intermediate dance moves to spice things up. We enjoyed it so much, it’s a no brainer. It’s a lot of fun, go!

Great instructor! I was always nervous about attending a salsa class even though a part of me always had the urge to. Kevin made sure that dancers of all levels, especially a beginner like me would feel comfortable and be able to have fun.

Kevin is a very patient and animated dancer. When I take his class, I learn so much and I have a lot of fun. Many different people attend and their diverse personalities add to the good time. The other dancers are very cool and and it seems like everyone has a good time. Even though I’m an intermediate, I still learn in his classes because he teaches something new for everyone. Kevin is an energetic and fun instructor. Taking one of his classes is like taking a hip-​shaking energy shot.
