Step Into Salsa

Came here on a Living Social deal and took 4 salsa classes and a zumba class. The zumba was awesome. The salsa classes were okay, I wish we didn’t have to share a room with the more advanced level. Got a little cramped.

For me one of the best salsa school in the city, all the instructors are really good, very perfectionist, no crowded classes, the instructors will dance with you and they will fix anything that you are doing wrong if you have to do it 20 time they will do it with you, some times I feel like I’m doing private lessons that’s how much attention they give to everyone in the class, Shenna, Caesar, Atsuko, Cookie and Angel great job guys… btw Angel can be tough some times but he still nice.

I wouldn’t recommend going to this class. I bought a groupon «deal» for this classes, and I somewhat regret it. The male instructor is rude! He takes no time to explain the steps, and when I got something wrong (there was no way I would get it right on my first class when he didn’t even teach me anything) he just told me to go to the class one level below. I was really surprised, because one would expect them to teach you, not to just send you to another class. The female instructor for the level 2 week classes is really nice, but the class setup is not good. Two classes from different levels/​instructors have to share the same studio space. That means that when we are trying to learn with the music, and want something slow, the other group is practicing advanced steps and has a really fast music on. Or they are practicing steps with no music and we can’t turn the music on. And vice-​versa. In addition, they have some weird cancellation policy. You are not required to reserve online to take the class, but if you do, and let’s say you sign up on the day of the class, you cannot cancel, because it is already less than 24h in advance. So if you don’t show up, they just take your money and that’s it. Although they have the same classes at other times, they wouldn’t let you take them. Lastly, the classes move REALLY slowly. You learn like 2 turns in 1.5h of one class, and then the next class you practice the 2 turns that you did before and maybe learn a new one. In a series of about 4 or 5 classes, you will learn about 4 turns. It really feels like a waste of money!

I got a 2 class voucher for. I was treated well and it was a treat. They teach salsa on 2, NY style salsa. They combine 2 classes in one room but it’s not really an issue because you still are left with plenty of personal dance space. It’s well managed and they are very professional, which I can appreciate. Class starts on time and its an hour and a half long. They are very friendly and it was a pleasant experience. I did the Living Social deal for beginner classes. I have taken several informal salsa classes, both in the U.S. and in Mexico, and I have never experienced instruction quite this bad. You spend the first 45 minutes of class dancing by yourself facing the front of the room — doing nothing but the basic step and right turns (OK, they finally threw in a few left turns on the 3^rd week). I mean, I had the basic step and the right turn after about 30 seconds, but every week, we spend pretty much the entire class doing only those two steps. Anyway, after the 45 minute «warm up,» we FINALLY get to dance with a partner. However, the males have just spent the first 45 minutes of class learning the female version of the steps, so now, with a partner, they are completely confused because they have to re-​learn their male parts. The teacher is a nice person, but I can never hear or understand what she is saying (there is an advanced class going on in the SAME ROOM right next to the beginner class). Plus, we aren’t actually learning anything. I cannot believe that after 4 ½ hours of instruction (3 classes), all we have done is the basic step, a right turn, and a left turn. Wow. I know this is a Living Social «deal,» but please do not waste your time or money.

I just completed the beginner series and I was disappointed. There was a different instructor every class, some of whom had never taught before. It was difficult to understand them and what they were teaching (saying turn to your right when you should be turning to your left). I had never taken a salsa class before, but had danced salsa countless times while living in Central America. I knew I was basic, but wanted to get help being more formal. I thought I was progressing fine, and the class seemed slow at times because I had already danced some of the basic turns. At the end of the series, students are tested in order to be able to move onto the next level. I was surprised when the owner, who had not instructed us, tested me and said I was not ready. He would not even explain why. I was very confused because every time I danced with our instructors, they never commented on a problem and I always received positive feedback. If you want to really learn how to dance salsa, I would NOT recommend this place. They do not provide enough instruction or feedback, so you learn enough to feel successful and pass the first series. It was very rude that the owner would not even explain himself. I definitely won’t be returning and don’t recommend this salsa dance company. I have heard great things about some others, which I will try in January.

So I came to the first class tonight after picking up the deal on living social. Was a little awkward trying to find the room since there were plenty of dance studios being rented out and lots of people waiting outside in the narrow hallway. After reading the computer print outs and finding the room, I waited outside for class to start. They were very quick to get everyone signed in and we immediately started doing the basic steps. I thought Sheena did a good job at pacing it out and I definitely had a good time taking lessons.

I had the nerve to finally take salsa classes after going dancing a couple of times. Step into Salsa was perfect for me to take part in. Both Sheena and Caesar are very professional and keep the classes very fun. There are monthly socials to practice in a live environment. I would recommend to anybody…

Cesar was my first salsa teacher and I must say i learned all that unspoken language of the dance from him (something I have not quite yet found in another teacher). Definitely a big help for someone not used to taking non-​verbal leads in partner dancing.
