Stepping Out Studios

Definitely a good venue if you need dance rehearsal space or modeling casting calls. It seems hallway space is limited but no temperature issues or other concerns that I encountered. I didn’t pay for space here so I can’t speak on that but I personally didn’t have a problem here & could deal with other casting calls here.

Ridiculously deceptive marketing practices! They advertise their beginner salsa classes as «free» on Eventbrite in order to avoid paying the booking fees. But when my boyfriend and I showed up for our registered class we were told that it was actually $ 24 a person. The woman at the front desk apologized, refused to make any kind of financial accommodation, and acknowledged that this was not the first time the issue had occurred.
We just moved to the neighborhood and were hoping to check out the studio as somewhere we could take ongoing dance classes but given the negative customer service experience will not be back. If the business really cared about keeping its customers, it would 1) advertise responsibly with clear upfront information on costs with all of its partner sites and 2) offer some type of accommodation for its misleading information and our wasted time.

The weekly west coast swing «practice session» (which could also be called a social, Mondays at 9:30) is amazing. It’s free, so you can’t beat the price. It also tends to be small (5 – 10 people show up), which means that you have two amazing instructors there (usually Tybaldt and Kendall) who are pretty happy to give you mini-​lessons and help out with stuff.
Also, I did a couple full lessons with Tybaldt when I was in town and I highly recommend him if you like someone who’s analytical and can break movements down into small pieces.
I’ve heard mixed reviews of the group lessons here, but I never took one so I’m not taking that into account in my rating.

Took a class here with an amazing instructor last weekend and the space was beyond cramped. Studio was supposed to hold 40 could barely hold 25 comfortably. Packed to oblivion.
The studios equipment (industrial sized vacuum/​steamer, workout materials, huge foam rollers, etc) were strewn in all corners of the room taking up much needed space. If you book here, I’d strongly suggest that you check the room first.
They do have what really seem to be some cool professional ballroom classes with ALOT of elder folks.
Bathroom was large enough — included a shower.
Would not attend another event here.

If you want to try ballroom dancing as an adult, this is a great studio to try it in. All the group classes are taught by very high level professional dancers who are very nice and helpful. Some are just amazing. The classes rotate which has pros and cons. Pro: you don’t need a partner. Con: you may have to dance with someone you may not want to.
There is one creepy older man that has been there apparently forever, takes most of the classes, thinks he knows everything, and is more touchy than necessary. It is dancing so some contact is supposed to happen, but he usually adds something extra. Women who are new may initially not be aware that he’s doing something wrong and/​or may not be able to tell him out of politeness. That’s probably why he loves dancing with women that are new.
I have been able to avoid dancing with him without much push back from the instructors, but that always feels kind of awkward and rude. I also feel bad because then the other women are dancing with him more so it doesn’t feel right as a solution.

Very central location. Rooms are on the small side for the most part with one big main studio. Every nook and cranny has some sort of dance or workout class at any given time.
Showers, atm machine and vending machines avail.

This is regarding private lessons (not the quality of the floor or instruction or the like): If you booked a tennis lesson with your partner to learn and play tennis, and then after paying found out during the lesson that you were sharing one court with 2 other couples, how would you feel? Imagine the chaos and potential for being whacked. This is similar — without the danger of the physical contact — of taking privates at this studio. You show up for your lesson with your partner and you’re put in a huge room with a number of other dancers, each doing their own different style of dance, some with their own instructors, and different music playing at times that has nothing to do with your lesson (and not softly but LLOOUUUDDD). This is what happened to me and my partner. I’ve been to many other studios over the years and used to teach a different form of dance professionally. No one else does this. If you pay for a private you get your private instructor and private room. The owner needs to realize that by trying to get more income than the room divisions can handle he will kill his reputation. We will not continue…

Tybaldt is not teaching West Coast Swing at the moment, but take his Hustle Class at 8:30 on Tuesday. He is the best! Or take a private with him and REALLY learn all the moves — like I do! HIs prices are very reasonable.

I studied dance and figured a dance studio would be great for my daughters 1^st birthday celebration. I have several witnesses.
However George Ciao ruined that experience for me!
George Ciao is an unprofessional scam artist. This place ruined my daughters birthday party. George Ciao verbally abused and attacked my husband as soon as he stepped into the studio we booked from 5 – 8. He yelled at my husband to «switch rooms or get out!» after we have proof in writing our confirmation of the studio we paid for. We showed up at 5pm for my one yr olds first birthday party. This little man spoke to me nastily with his hands in my face and caused me to to flip out. This animal spoke to us like dogs, had his hands in my face. Told us «never have another party here again» when this was our first time there! Caused my party to start 2 hrs late! My party was ruined I was too distraught to take pictures of my babies first party with family and friends. Emotionally scarred. Scam artists!!! We were treated and spoken to like animals. Told to «get out and take your money back, never have a party here again!» Awfully ran business with the most unprofessional staff I have ever been around ever! Beware!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! Broadway Dance Center or Steps is the way to go. They give a bad name to dance studios. AWFUL!!! Our whole day was thrown off. I don’t have one picture of my baby after I was treated like nothing, yelled at and told to leave. My daughter threw a fit after all of the commotion. I was thrown off the whole evening. Ruined!!! After I flipped on this little man that was hand talking and speaking to me unprofessionally we were told «ok stay in the studio». That was around 6:30pm. Our party was supposed to be from 5 – 8. My family saw how distraught I was and they setup the room for me. Catered food was already on its way, I wanted to leave! The rest of the night was a blur not one picture of my daughter because it was all ruined!!! Family was showing up with gifts and food was on its way it was too chaotic to cancel. We drove there from NJ, family from NYC and upstate. We were told too many times by this little man to «take your money back and leave».
BEWARE!!! An employee told us «this happens all the time». Do you want to host an event where you are coerced to leave after you have booked and received confirm? My husband double checked the monday before our saturday party and received an email confirm all was well. An «Anita» person whom my husband booked with was there. She wouldn’t even come out!!!
Please take my review serious. This is not spam! Nightmare that I cannot redo. They are nasty and unprofessional. The front desk people gave me dirty snobbish looks as if I did something wrong. The place was empty. Most dance schools are crowded on saturdays, I know because I used to dance. Please listen people, do not host anything here. You will book one room and then show up and be forced or bullied into using a room you did not pay for. We did not move that was not going to happen. The little rude man disappeared the rest of the night. The staff had the nerve around 8:15pm to start walking back and forth past the room we were in. The little man told us stay however long after my flip out. That did not mean 15 mins extra when my party was derailed 2 hrs!!! I had to put this old woman dressed in young girl clothes in her place because she thought she was going to force us out of the room. As soon as I told him to give us our money back he looked shocked, but he offered us our money back several times so I figured i’d oblige. He was hoping we would leave and so that he could scam us out of our money. This place is bleeding money and hopefully it will shutdown for good. Its staff and owner deserve to be on the street! One woman there said this happens all of the time. All of the time? What kind of establishment is this? He probably acts like a rabies infected animal to force patrons to leave while keeping their money!

I went there for a hustle party or Wednesday and the music made me want to vomit. The DJ’s on Wednesday do not play anything close to oldies or anything that has a meoldy for Hustle Dancing. I cant see why anyone would want to go there.
The management would be better served with tapes. I have been dancing all sorts of dances for 40 years, especially hustle and I cannot dance there on Wednesdays. I am certain they have much better music for their other dance parties.

I have a girl friend in NYC who after taking classes and dancing for the past few years here, now can dance like a star on the «Dancing with The Star» show. (In fact she is in the video on this studio’s Unilocal page too). After seeing how graceful she danced in the photos and videos on her FB page, I decided to come visit her while she was doing a rehearsal for a show one evening and take a beginning one-​hour salsa class here for $ 20. I liked how small the class size was, so you got individual attention from the two instructors and also got to dance with pretty much everyone of the opposite sex there. It did get really hot once we started practicing though so they could increase the A/​C a little there. If I lived in NYC I would definitely go there more often to practice more.

Stepping Out hosts a terrific party called ‘Friday Night Fever” on the 1^st and 3^rd Fridays of each month. Great mix of Ballroom, Latin, and Hustle music and dance. The people who host this party as well as the professionals and advanced dancers are extremely friendly and happy to dance with people of all dance levels. A really nice atmosphere to meet new people, improve your dancing, and have a lot of fun!

I don’t know much about their ballroom dance privates or group classes but they have a great dance rental studio business here.
Solid place if your’e looking to teach class or workshops and need a space but don’t have one of your own. Loud speaker system with soundproof studios. Large clean mirrors. Bathrooms have clean showers and they have towel service. Front desk is friendly. It has everything you need in a great location. I use them 20 times/​week for my dance classes — they are open around the clock, too, which is great. Good stuff if you are looking to teach classes.

I’m a salsera wannabe! I joined the salsa social, not knowing what to expect. I’m glad I came but everyone was so good I felt like a beginner. The place got hot very quickly but every time I stood near the fan I got cold. Even though I was intimidated I was happy that I was finally at a venue where it was guaranteed everyone could dance. I enjoyed it very much.

I purchased a class through Course Horse for the Beginner Swing group class with Sophie. When I went there with my boyfriend, there were two front desk people and we waited about 2 – 3 minutes while one of them worked with a person who was ahead of us. I was expecting to be greeted with a friendly welcome, since I was confused of what to do – I had to catch the eye of the second front desk person so I can ask if I could go up to her. Aside from that, registering in their system was quick and easy, and we were told to go to Studio B. As soon as we went into the room, I felt a bit chilly, but don’t worry you will warm up as soon as you start practicing.
Sophie came into the room and we said our «Hello’s.» She waited a few minutes and then stated that she was going to start the class – my boyfriend and I were the only two in the group class! Yay! A group class turned private lesson – awesome! So we started with the basic steps and then were taught two moves to go along with it. Since we were the only two there, Sophie was able to correct us in a very constructive and non-​intimidating way. Sophie recognized that I was not able to let the guy lead, so she gave me good suggestions so I may correct it. Sophie told my boyfriend to record her and I so we could remember the steps and continue practicing. Overall, I had a very good time and appreciated the advice provided – Sophie overall is nice, a good instructor and knowledgeable. I will be returning (hopefully) sometime soon.

I have been coming to stepping out for years. I’ve tried other studios and go to them as well. It’s a little pricey if you only take one class/​week. But the unlimited class package is decent.
I’ve taken every single class at this studio at one point and I’ve learned that there’s only specific teachers I want to take. My experience is that some teachers are wonderful, good, mediocre, or bad, and you should ask around before you sign up for a teacher. Just because someone is a great dancer does not make them a good teacher.
I recommend this studio if you want to learn international ballroom. There are some excellent standard teachers who focus on technique, especially Tetyana and Lukas. Even all the advanced/​intermediate dancers take Tetyana’s beginner classes because she is such a great teacher. Some people really like Jaime and Linda but I’m not that interested in their teaching style.
For international latin, Christian and Martina have the best classes. Their classes are very popular. However, Christian has no patience for people who do not have correct technique and he is very critical. Martina’s beginner classes are not really true beginners; she teaches at the interm/​advanced level.
I do not like their social ballroom/​latin classes at all. They are geared toward people who might be trying something new… casually learning. So if you come from a dance background, you will be bored by the lack of technique. The instructors are basically just showing you patterns to copy.
The Argentine Tango/​Salsa instructors at Intermed/​Advanced level are great.
For Beg through Adv International Standard ballroom, I give 4 stars.
For the rest of the studio classes, I give 3 stars.

Purchased 2 hours of private lesson through Bloomspot. Haven’t tried any of the group dance classes yet. But based on today’s experience, I’m looking forward to giving the group classes a shot. The instructor was an adorable 17-​year-​old, who’s been competing since she was 5! We covered 5 or 6 different styles and I realized why I’d never picked up ballroom dancing (notwithstanding my love of dance). Am I really supposed to trust the man and follow him around and let him lead me wherever he chooses and keep on dancing until he decides to stop?!? ;-p
The studio was clean and airy. The staff was extremely warm and friendly. I’ve never been to another ballroom dance studio so I don’t really have a point of reference for comparison. But so far, I have no desire to try out a different place as I’m quite satisfied with today’s experience.
