Now this is fitting for me as my 100th «Yelp» to complete my List. Just found this while doing some research on Wikipedia/Dogpile and this came up. If you like Jazz, Pop, R&B, or even Gospel, you should hear this album and especially«Compared to What?»(by Eugene McDaniels). Les McCann is a very dear friend of mine and I am currently writing his memoirs. What a fun trip it has been. The man is a Raconteur beyond anything you can imagine. Today I just finished the Chapter on his recording«Swiss Movement» at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969 from whence came his quintessential song«Compared to what. I am deeply honored to be a part of this and especially to have Les McCann call me his friend. Hopefully, my effort will bring some buoyancy to Les(now 77) and surely he deserves the very finest recognition as can be realized. Check it out!

A unique recording of improvisation and spontaneity that is hard to match! Eddie Harris with Benny Bailey(trumpet) never played or rehearsed with Les McCann before this! Maybe that is what ignited the spontaneity that evident throughout all of the recordings on this event recorded at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Because of McCann’s vocals on «Compared to What» this is more Les McCann’s album than Eddie Harris’ despite the addition of Harris’ Sax. FYI: The Montreux 30th Anniversary Edition adds an extra track, «Kaftan». The album contains information of everyone happened to be on the same stage that night. Eddie Harris and Benny Bailey never even got sheet music! 1 Compared to What(8:41) 2 Cold Duck Time(6:31) 3 Kathleen’s Theme(5:45) 4 You Got it in Your Soulness(7:08) 5 The Generation Gap(8:45) Les McCann: Piano & Vocals Eddie Harris: Tenor Sax Benny Bailey: Trumpet Leroy Vinnegar: Bass Donald Dean: Drums I didn’t discover till a lot later that this album is one of the most popular jazz recordings of all time… And it’s one of the best! It’s ONLY $ 10.99 at ( )!
