The 1760 Third Avenue Residence

Stayed here for the Summer 2015 while interning in the city.
Location:
Very good, located 1 block away from the subway station.
Rooms:
–Can tell they have been refurbished recently when I moved in but still pretty shabby and poorly done, at 4am one morning a massive chunk of plaster fell from the ceiling onto me when I was sleeping. Thankfully it’s really light and the work was completed around 3 days later to repair it.
— The AC sometimes got messed up and blew hot air instead of cool air, this was only on occasion though, just make sure you check it if you have to leave anywhere.
WIFI:
–Don’t get me started… I have 3 devices (not connected all at once) and not one day passed where I would be kicked out of the WIFI and/​or it would be incredibly slow to the point it was useless.
You are given an Ethernet cable for high speed access, but welcome to 2015 — smartphones are yet to have that capability.
Facilities:
Kitchen–
+ Every morning it is cleaned very well which is nice (until people don’t know how to clean up after themselves later on).
— Disappointing that they provide absolutely no form of cooking utensils, staying here for only 10 weeks means that you have to go and buy your own stuff which then gets tossed in the trash (I have yet to see if they take any utensils as donations for others).
+Well equipped with TVs, chairs and tables.
Gym– Not the best at all really.
–The indistinguishable smell in the basement gets stronger as you make your way there which confirms you’re getting closer if you’re lost I suppose.
–There were a couple of times wipes weren’t available because they had run out of the dispenser was not dispensing properly.
–Equipment is outdated: The cable machine only has 2 attachments so good luck getting much out of that.
— It gets EXTREMELY hot if you work out hard as the gym has a set thermostat.
+ At least you have something! :)
iPads–
Yes, they have a load of iPads outside the Student Office but seemed like a small waste of space except from when checking in a lot of guests, otherwise I seen very little activity there.
GamesRoom–
Again, equipment is a little bit shabby and I think they got the thermostat in there mixed up with the gym as it is absolutely freezing most of the time!
They have a pool table, table tennis, a poker table and some sort of arcade game.
I didn’t really use the library much but it looked like a nice quiet place.
Overall, my experience here was good, to sum up it isn’t really what you pay for. You pay for the location really and that’s about it. The hallways upstairs need to ripped out and redone, the carpets were really disgusting, I saw people walking about in barefeet wondering how they didn’t stick to the floor!
Anyway, the main reason I chose this place over an apartment for short term is to meet people in the same situation as myself. That was the best part about it all, you can meet loads of friends here and you will never have a lonely night (They always have events on if you don’t get to meet friends on the first day)!
I would stay again, but like I said there are some improvements that have to be made but making friends while being in the city was the biggest priority for me! So for that, it outweighed all the negatives.

I’ve been living here since january and I have a pretty good idea of this place to be able to write a Unilocal about it. Firstly, I want to say that i saw the Unilocal for this place and read all the reviews before I came in. I was expecting the worst but hoping for the best. However, this was my first time dorming so i really didn’t know what to expect. With that in mind, you’ll know I was expecting something from a horror movie if you’ve read the Unilocal about here. So lets get on with this review…
NOTE: i understand staff reads these reviews so let me get one thing straight: Wi-​Fi. Its quite ironic that a dorm has terrible, unusable at times, wifi. Deadlines will get missed, assignments will be missed, emails won’t get sent, texts won’t get sent. you NEED to improve the wifi situation here. That is the one thing that has not gotten better and frankly is the most important since everyone here has atleast 2 devices that use it. GET A BETTER WIFI SOLUTION HERE.
I’ll start with the elevators because every person uses them at one point or another. So theres 6 elevators in the building. Wait time isn’t too bad normally. Only once was there a glitch in the system and you’d have to take the stairs if you didn’t want to wait 5 minutes for one. Besides that, they’re reliable 99% of the time. One of the elevators (middle right side) is slow to open when you get to your floor (like 6 seconds between getting to the floor and the doors opening)
Now I’ll talk about the room. The room I got was a double on the 15^th floor. Its pretty much a studio apartment. 1 closet a person with additional storage under the bed and a desk. The bathroom is actually quite nice with black tile floor and a stand up shower. It also has a mirror with a medicine cabinet which is also nice. The fridge is relatively large and you can fit a lot of food in there.
Next is the amenities. This includes the gym and the laundry room. I’ll be skipping the kitchen as I’ve never used it because I refuse to bring food and supplies down & up 15 flights. Also, I won’t be discussing the mailroom as I don’t need mail delivered here. For what its worth, the gym is a C+ at best. I wouldn’t touch anything besides the treadmill or the elliptical because I’ve witnessed far too many people refuse to clean the machine after they’re finished with it. Not sure if its their fault though because the few times I’ve been in there, there was NO hand sanitizer and NO wipes stocked. I understand this is a dorm with a gym and not a gym with a dorm but some thought has to be put into us down there getting sweaty and wanting to keep it sanitary. That said, I only really use the treadmill and it works great.
The laundry room is always clean and there will always be available wash/​dry machines. $ 2/​cycle tho and the dryer leaves clothes damp if you plan on drying anything over 3 pairs of jeans. That gets annoying so cut your loads into 2 trips and load the card with plenty cash
Now, the lobby. The lobby is clean and theres a few study rooms to chill in and read a book or study. My roommate is accommodating to my needs though and doesn’t make it too loud in our room that I’d need to go there; i prefer to study in my room. Now the front desk people. The one time i needed to ask a security guy a question, he was helpful. Sure he wasn’t happy but don’t get your feelings hurt and blame the guy if he doesn’t sound so cheerful to answer a question he probably hears 8x a day. Maintenance was quick the time I needed them. Our fridge stopped working. I filed a claim and within 2 hrs, we had a brand new fridge here
Finally, the atmosphere living amongst hundreds of students. Every single night, you’ll hear kids screaming and acting inconsiderate. It gets bad thurs-​sunday tho because thats when everyone likes to party and drink. partying means loud music too. Oh and everyday, weed smell permeates into the hallway and into your room. what do you expect? its hundreds of students living in NYC. I don’t get offended tho, Im pretty easy going. One thing that I do mind is the banging against the walls when your next door neighbor is getting it on. That happens fairly often so when you hear a loud, rhythmic thud against your wall, you’ll have to deal with it and try to concentrate on something else
so my final impressions? Its pretty cool living here at the end of the day. I was expecting to be scared out of here but its not too bad for what its worth. I live here because its convenient and thats about it. I enjoy the location and the whole city is a subway stop away. Most of the kids here are friendly so you can say whatsup and talk about school in the elevator no problem. Just hope that you get a good roommate who isn’t a slob and you’ll like it here, i promise.
If you read this whole thing, every question you have should be answered by now and please, take the other reviews with a grain of salt. What I’ve just wrote is completely honest and unbiase

It’s a great place to live. You have literally everything you need. The rooms are accommodating; everything is new & works & you’re actually at a great location
Downsides:
Cockroaches in basement do like to appear.
Mailroom times are pretty inconvenient & workers are stubborn to go one extra minute and accuse you of being «late» and don’t really have a want to help you.
Kitchen gets absolutely disgusting due to no one cleaning up their mess /​clogging sinks. Have to catch my cooking times near the cleaning hours or else I just don’t cook or eat at all.

EHS Third Avenue has its benefits and its issues, but I do think the benefits outweigh the problems.
Benefits: the neighborhood, convenient 6 train access, Corner Café & Bakery right near here (both are phenomenal, top quality restaurants/​bakeries), Lloyd’s carrot cake (OMG say no more!), Gong Thai (which you would never notice if you didn’t live in the area, but once you go you’ll never stop going)… the list goes on… and the scene is always changing, as Manhattan is wont to do. The neighborhood is quiet at night, if the other residents are not being obnoxious skateboarding right outside or something.
Fitness center downstairs with all the fixings, if I liked working out I’d be down there all the time. But Snorlax is my distant cousin, so…
Laundry room is great, plenty of machines to accomodate the busiest hours.
Issues: Kitchens are not kept very clean, but this is mostly the fault of the residents who use them (they do not clean up after themselves, char their food without ventilating the area… not EHS fault).
I see a lot of complaints on here about cleanliness. to that I say: CLEAN YOUR F***ING ROOM! I mean come ON, EHS is not a maid service, if you want them to replace your toilet seat or your shower curtain they will, and you can be goddamn 100% certain that if you move into a cheap rental apartment the landlord is NOT going to mop your floors for you, and you’d have to be delusional to think otherwise. It’s easy to complain and blame others instead of looking at yourself for answers, but lets just say I NEVER saw a cockroach, or any species of insect inside my room (except the occasional fruit fly in the summer, but that’s to be expected), because I do not leave trash lying around, etc. I’ve seen the way some of these students keep their rooms and lets just say it’s unspeakable. So DO NOT LISTEN to that crap.
One real issue is the maintenance. You can place work orders online, but chances are, they will not be responded to in a timely manner unless you track down the maintenance staff yourself physically. Not as difficult as it sounds, but still can be frustrating, especially if you have an urgent repair request.
Last year, some of the RAs were very bad, but this year the RA situation is much improved. Margaret, one of the Residence Directors, is fantastic, and Irena is always great. Before Margaret, there was a very annoying person whose name shall not be mentioned, but what a relief that things are evolving in a positive direction.
On that note, of all the EHS residences, this one is the best in terms of location and setup. Sure its not the Ritz. but it doesnt cost as much as the Ritz either! Keep it real :)

Wonderful? This place is horrible. Spent the last year living there and while I was paying for a 11k double. (Which you should go find an apartment for that price) and my girlfriend was paying near 16 k (as you see the rip off starts before you even step into the building). PLACE IS GROSS, the first month I had a cockroach in my room on the 15^th floor and as being someone who works out alot the gym is alright I don’t Know about amazing, but it is definetly okay for the conscience, ill tell you that the gym is filthy they never clean the machines or floors, there are dead cockroaches all over the place and the live ones live right under the machines so
Don’t worry if you have to put something on the ground I’m sure a cockroach will be able to greet you. The sanitary wipes are never filled and the hand sanitizer is always empty upon saying it was a health hazard they came and fixed them… You have to pay for laundry which can be cheaper at a laundry mat but since the convince is there I paid. The halls are filthy the garbage rooms. I don’t even have to say anything… The management is HORRIBLE when I say horrible. I mean absolutely horrible, there is no supervisor or management on the weekends so if there’s an emergency wait until Monday and they will try to get to you… The material in the room is so cheap. Do not hang anything on the wall (it is not even Sheetrock it will rip when you take it down at the end of the year then have fun paying the crazy repair cost) just the unprofessionalism in the whole place is ridiculous… If I was on my computer I would’ve typed the whole annoyance with this building but all I will say. Take it from experience and not from these happy jolly (seems to be) reviews people are leaving because they truly haven’t experienced the living aspect of the place and they are just assuming what it was like… All of the people I know are not staying there next year and so many people left the place in search of an apartment or totally moved resident buildings into Brooklyn. The security is the good thing especially since you have a housing project right across the street which they fail to mention if you do not notice it (for some reason)

What a wonderful place to be! Everyone is so friendly– security and staff especially! Makes me feel like home when I am here. Activities planned for the students throughout the year too! I have been to multiple broadway shows for so cheap through organized trips with EHS!
Nice location as well. A block away from the 6 train and a nice and quiet neighborhood away from the hussle and bussle of midown but close enough to get to by train.
24 hr CVS a block away with everything you could need, tons of restaurants within walking distances on 3^rd and 2^nd ave! Multiple grocery stores within a block or two as well. Very convient spot to live.
The building itself is SUPER clean and very new looking. Even a gym and rec room downstairs!
Love it here! Highly recommend!!!

Lived here over the summer, thankfully not on my dime. Had I paid close to 7 grand out of my own pocket to live in this out of the way, close to absolutely nothing hell hole, I’d be pissed. Checking in a friend to stay with you is probably easier done at the Pentagon, and also don’t even get me started on the fact that any visitor that comes in has to pay cash. Joke. The «security» people are miserable and want absolutely nothing to do with you, and if you have a question, be prepared for an eye roll and snarky remark that doesn’t answer your question. I’ve never had to live in a dorm type living ever before, and let me tell you this just confirmed I won’t ever again. Look elsewhere.
