The Colour Box

Don’t walk your dog in front of Tonya’s store. She comes out yelling when dog pees against tree in front. Then locks her door without any explanation. I always pick up after the dog. Don’t shop or stop here. She seems very bitter and angry. Avoid Colour Box. I will.

I live very close to the Colour Box and finally went in to have a touch up. Tonya took a lot of time discussing my hair’s condition and what I wanted. I have tricky hair, very dry and frizzy and have had some bad outcomes. I have been going to a well known and great salon, just way too expensive for my budget. I am more than satisfied with my color and confident that Tonya knows what she’s doing and she didn’t just get lucky!

I stumbled upon this salon by chance on my way home from work. I glanced over and saw Tonya with a client. Tonya’s hair looks like mine and the salon’s name said it all. I happened to be looking for a salon in my neighborhood that I could trust to color my hair. I’d just left from a consultation at another salon around the corner.
Tonya kindly gave me a consultation right off the street. I could tell that she knew her stuff and hoped that the results would reflect that.
A week later, I returned for my color. Not only was she very accommodating to make sure that I got the color I wanted, she was very fun to chat with and answered all of my questions about hair and color. If there was something she didn’t know, she’d honestly say so.
She also didn’t push products on me. The salon is beautiful and (when I went) not crowded. There was only one other person who popped in and out for a quick cut. The reason our appointments overlapped was because Tonya wanted to make sure that I was happy with the color, so I waited to think about it. She was willing to change it if I wasn’t. How nice!
In the end, I was very pleased. It’s darker than I came in with, but that’s exactly the direction that I wanted to go anyway.
She found just the right color that looks like it could be natural yet still gives me a nice lift. And she’s very detailed with her method of application, logging your treatment details and providing information. She wants you to understand the process.
I don’t know why, but the following day my hair felt softer than ever. I looked so good I wanted to go out on the town! I’m definitely returning to and recommending The Colour Box.

Searching for a stylist is a long and arduous process. It is such a unique relationship I’ve always felt it important to consider the whole picture… good work and good vibe. Tonya did an amazing job… love my color and more importantly she helped me understand why — despite my years of following good advice given to me by stylists of bringing in photos of what i couldn’t stand and what I want — i would end up with a style i couldn’t wait to grow out! I got a great cut but also a plan to get it where I want (still in process of growing one out!).
Nestled in a nice street next to a small «grab a bite» place just a couple short blocks from 50^th or Columbus Circle Exits from A, C or E trains. The door blends into the walls of windows on both places so don’t think you’re not at the entrance). Her salon is european chic (or at least that’s the best way I can think to describe it in that it’s small but makes excellent use of its open space. Note: I didn’t see any magazines and while I didn’t care because I had my iPhone and she’s so much fun to yap with, that may matter to some people.
So happy to have found her.

Tonya is my hero. She is brilliant, talented, and a lot of fun to chat with while she works her magic! I have been going to Colour Box for ten years, and cannot imagine going anywhere else. Tonya always gives me what I want, even if I’m not quite sure what it is that I want. Cuts, color and styling — this is the place to go.

At The Colour Box you pay very reasonable rates for a talented and versatile stylist in a peaceful and beautiful space. Tonya is an artist. She has been styling and coloring my hair for about 10 years and the few times I had my hair done elsewhere, I cried like a baby. The Colour Box provides highly personalized, professional service and has consistently exceeded my expectations.

First, note that this business has moved, but not far. Tonia is now on 54^th St., between 9^th and 10^th, in a beautiful new space.
I have been a loyal customer for two years and cannot imagine going anywhere else — and I know that others feel the same way. Tonia is so good at any and all techniques that she doesn’t need to impose styles or ideas — she listens and then does whatever YOU want.
This is the perfect place for someone who is looking for a high-​quality haircut in a beautiful and relaxing space, but doesn’t want to deal with the stuck-​up attitude you get in some places. It is just the perfect little place. Try it!
Oh, and Tonia is particularly skilled with curly/​wavy/​thick hair — a rare and valuable thing.

I love the Colour Box. I have been going to see Tonya for about 10 years and she has taken me from tolerating my hair to loving it. Tonya patiently helps her clients see potential that we would not think about ourselves – she helps us think out of the «box» (pun intended:)) while respecting our wishes and needs. The environment of the Colour Box is totally chill and easy and beautiful, never are you rushed and products are never pushed. I leave feeling like I have been well-​cared for and confident that I got the best out there for a reasonable price. Tonya can work with a wide variety of hair textures and needs – and that is a rare commodity. If you are looking for just a cut or color, you won’t regret a trip to The Colour Box.

Tonya has been cutting my hair for the last few years and I’ve always been very happy with the results.
I came to her with lots of long strawberry blonde hair, which she handled beautifully. We tried bangs a few months back, I liked the change and she made the transition easy.
Last week I made the decision to «go short,» and Tonya took lots of time to talk through my options, personal style, hair texture. and quality. I was well-​pleased with the cut.
Her shop is clean, pleasant, and very serene. If you’re looking to be fussed over, this isn’t the place. If you’re looking for a top-​notch cut in a homey setting, on a lovely midtown block, give Tonya a call.

I really really dont understand why this place is called the Color Box. you would think this indicates that they specialize in color when clearly they do not.
I live in the neighborhood and had seen the store front on many occasions so one day last yr decided to call for an appt. I have slightly tricky hair– once highlighted, it needs to be toned in order to cut down on the brassiness. And I always tell every stylist this.
The nite I went to Tonya– well it turned into basically a week-​long visit. When I sat down in the chair, I immediately questioned my choice when she walked over to me with one of those little hair color swatch cards to compare it to my hair color. I should’ve gone with my gut and left right then and there but I wanted to give her a chance since she’s a small business owner and I like supporting neighborhood joints.
But the first nite I left with orange highlights and had to wear a scarf over my hair to work the next day. The next day she was able to tone it down slightly, but it still looked bright and brassy.
The final appointment couldn’t be made until later in the week b/​c she was booked up. So I had gross, cheap-​looking and tacky hair for a week. She finally fixed it on the last appointment, and I was so relieved that I hugged her.
She’s a real nice lady, but I really question her coloring abilities. To this day I am not sure what made it go SO wrong. And considering that I spent well over $ 200 for this… well, I was pretty close to calling up the BBB and inquiring about her license.
I will never go back to this salon.
