The Lucerne Hotel

Such a great location! It’s across a 24 hour drug store, an awesome pizza place, and insomnia cookies. There was many pubs and restaurants that are walking distance (including Starbucks, awesome bagel place, and an organic bakery!). Walking distance to Central Park. It’s everything you imagine New York to be!
The hotel itself is very nice. I love the architecture and little details throughout the hotel. The rooms are fairly spacey and very clean. The staff is very nice and accommodating. They let us do a very early check in (5am), and upgraded our room for free. When checking out, they held our luggage at the hotel for numerous hours (6).
Would definitely stay here again!

If this hotel treats you as a valued guest, then you should consider yourself fortunate. Arrived for a relaxing weekend in New York. Upon arrival at 4:30 PM, placed luggage on desk chair and put requisite bed bug traps in room. Upon returning at 10:30 PM, bedbug traps were clear however upon entry into bathroom discovered it had not been cleaned properly from previous guests. Body hairs from previous guest (s) were on floor, in tub and on counter. Travel size shampoo/​conditioner/​lotion samples on counter were open and used previously and tub wall tile had mold in grout on all walls. Television turned on but didn’t turn off. And when on — wouldn’t change channels.
I attempted to address the cleanliness issue of the room on several occasions. I called down to the front desk at 11:05 PM on my first arrival night. I was told to discuss it with management the next day — Kurt Sookdar, the Director of Operations. At 9:30 AM, prior to leaving the next day for my day out, I went to the front desk and I was told I needed to discuss it with management later in the day. When I returned at 4:30 PM to change clothes for the evening I was told again I needed to discuss it with management, but that he still wasn’t available.
When I went to the front desk to check out. .. I again reminded them of the cleanliness issue that I had attempted to report 48 hours earlier to no avail. I also informed them that I ended up cleaning the bathroom myself. I was handed a business card. .. of Kurt Sookdar, the Director of Operations, told that they could not help me and was told to call him directly. That was 5 weeks ago. He has yet to return my call.
Would love to be able to post the pictures. .. they are gross to say the least.

I like this hotel because of the proximity to my daughter’s apartment. I love the local feel, old world décor and architecture. I have to say the last few times the maid service has been hit or miss. I will continue to stay here but be aware, it can take all day to get your room cleaned and they are a bit stingy on the toiletries and towels.

Great location if you’re interested in being in a less touristy area, and don’t mind hopping on the subway a few stops. Loads of restaurants in the area, plus Zabars and Levain Bakery (yum).
We had a superior king room, which had a king bed and a nice hallway with a large closet (big enough for our 2 carry on bags, 2 regular bags, an ironing board, and hanging space). The bathroom was on the small side and the shower not amazing but satisfactory.
The bed was firm but not to the point of being uncomfortable. The air conditioning was a bit too harsh and we were either warm or cold — but at least it worked. We were in room 619 so on the 6^th floor and not right on Amsterdam — but our windows (on a corner) looked out over rooftops with vents for the restaurants — so opening our windows meant our room smelled of food, so we just kept them closed. We could hear street noise but it didn’t wake us or keep us up.
The room was on the small side but comfortable. It’s not modernly styled but it was all okay, and the TV was large with a good picture and lots of channels.
Free wifi wasn’t super-​fast but perfectly adequate for normal use, and could be used on as many devices as we wanted.
The front desk staff and doormen were nice. The concierge we spoke to was a rude man who treated us like idiots and was more interested in his phone than helping us.
Basically we just wanted to know the cost of a taxi to JFK (FYI, plan on $ 70 including toll and tip). We decided that was too much and we’d take the 1, the E, and the SkyTrain. It was just before 2pm and our international flight departed JFK at 6.30pm. The concierge STRONGLY urged us to have the receptionist call us a taxi as there was no way we’d make it to the airport in time and was trying to bully us into calling a taxi (does he get a kickback?!). We went on our own way as we had planned and were in the queue at JFK by 3.20pm, so he was not only an ass, but an ignorant ass. I’ve not factored this into my rating as it wouldn’t deter me from staying here again but it needed to be mentioned!

We ended up chosen the Lucerne over a hotel in Brooklyn mostly due to the location and we weren’t disappointed. It was very continently located for the Metro 1 line (which we ended up using more times than I can remember!). Interestingly (and highlighted by the main image on Unilocal) there is a Banksy located between the hotel and the Metro.
The interior of the hotel is as you would expect for a four star hotel in NYC, but our room was spacious with a seperete closet for our bags (which was a nice touch). The air con was a bit warm on the first day, but then thankfully kicked in for our remaining time and in fact was a little chilly at times (it has been a long time since I’ve been able to say that about a hotel’s air con!).
The bed was comfortable enough, and there was a good selection of channels on the television. The wi-​fi was of average speed, and allowed for multiple connections (and was free!). So all in all, I think I’d return to the Lucerne in the future as I was very happy overall with the experience.

and was pleasantly surprised. It is a walk or cab ride away from museums, Central Park, DSW, museums and all kinds of eats. The AM and PM staff was incredibly helpful in providing suggestions for places to eat, where to be at night etc. Flavored water can be found in the afternoon and early evening here in the main lobby. The room we stayed in was perfect… clean, air conditioned and we could watch some preseason football in peace. Vending machines are on the second floor. There is a café next door for breakfast lunch and dinner (you can also pre arrange room service from there which is a plus). Will be coming back and staying the next time Manhattan calls.

I had a week-​long stay here last month, in a standard queen that was a large, well-​appointed, very comfortable room. I think this is the cleanest hotel I have ever stayed in. Located on the Upper West Side, this is a quiet, friendly location, very convenient to everything, really, because you’re directly across the street from the 1 which will get you everywhere, a 24 hr Duane Reade across the street for late night or last minute amenities (food, toiletries, etc), a deli where you can get a really good sandwich, and The Dubliner Irish bar right up the block, which is so old school you have to visit it at least once. The hotel staff was terrific. The wine hour was a little disappointing as they didn’t seem to chill the white wine in advance, so it was always room temperature. There’s a bit of a bump to the elevators, so watch your step. I wasn’t a fan of the room service from the adjacent French restaurant. Either I didn’t enjoy the food I received, or they didn’t answer the phone. Still, it’s NYC — there are plenty of other places to choose your food from ;-) TIP: if you need a refrigerator make your request in advance as they may run out of them the day of arrival. And (at least as of now) there’s no fee for it, which was a lovely surprise.
Will stay here again, definitely.

great hotel in the upper west side. You literally have a Duane Reade across the street for any last minute or emergency amenities.
The hotel hugs the corner of 79^th and Amsterdam. Short walking distance to awesome places to eat such as: insomnia cookies, sugar and plumm, shake shack, andy’s deli, bagel talk, Freddie and Pepper’s Pizza, Levain, Blossom Du Jour, Peacefood Café and many others. You also have Central Park a couple blocks away as well. Close to the 1 train, or you can walk down to 72^nd for the 2 and 3.
Hotel was clean and spacious enough (definitely bigger than the Hudson). All staff were friendly, opened doors and answered my questions with a smile. I did not get to try the adjacent restaurant, Nice Matin, but it was always packed. The hotel provided coupons for the restaurant as a nice incentive.
I opted for a smaller room with a Queen size bed, and we had a TV, closet with hangers/​safe/​ironing board and iron and extra pillows. From the other reviews there are bigger rooms with a fridge and dishes.
I definitely will be staying here again. great value for the location.

I stayed here for a week in October 2013. I had an excellent stay… rooms were nice, clean and the staff were really friendly. Great location, close to Central Park and the subway is only a block away. I would definitely stay here again on my next visit.
Side note, the artist Banksy put up a piece on W79th between Amsterdam and Broadway.

Spent three nights here with our two kids (ages 5 and 8) and found it very comfortable and convenient to the sites we are interested in — Natural History Museum, Central Park, with most everything else easily reached by subway.
We booked a Superior Queen Suite and it was adequate for our needs. Small «kitchenette» was simply a microwave, mini fridge, Keurig, and dishes/​cutlery (no kitchen sink) but that was enough to make breakfasts and snacks easy. We brought in fresh bagels two mornings (couple of good shops within a two minute walk) and went to the attached restaurant, Nice Matin, one morning for a special breakfast.
For a hotel in Manhattan, our room (624) was incredibly quiet. We heard next to nothing from other rooms or the street. Beds were comfortable and we enjoyed having the tiny sitting room to accommodate the four of us (kids could watch TV in one room and we could close the door for some quiet).
Door staff was always there and ready to help. Lots of restaurants right around the neighborhood — both fancy and affordable. Enjoyed a great dinner at 5 Napkin Burger (7 min walk), quick/​cheap lunch at Pizza by Grolla (directly across Amsterdam Ave), birthday dinner at Coppola’s (directly across W. 79^th) from hotel. Others as well, but these are the standouts.
Like anyplace in NYC, I feel like I’m paying an arm and a leg, but in this case it was worth it. We’ll be back.

We had a pleasant stay at this hotel and the staff were nice and professional. However, I did find the night crew more friendly. I feel bad for not catching their names but the lady at the front desk and the bell hop guy were just awesome! They always greeted us with bright smiles!
We did get sick on this trip and ordered room service every morning. It took about 30 — 40 mins… pretty normal. We enjoyed our meals up until the last day (Monday). Food was undercooked a bit but hey, 4 out 5, can’t really complain.
The hotel will hook you up with coupons for the Nice Matin and Coppola’s. Nice matin is adjacent to the hotel and Coppola’s is across the street.
You have a 24 hour drug store across the street and it’s walking distance to the museum, subway and park. I would definitely stay here again. It’s quiet at night and I find that a huge plus.

We went up for the NY Marathon. This hotel is in a fantastic location, rooms were nice, people were always cleaning and keeping up with the guests. Rarely did we have to open the doors for ourselves while entering or exiting. Everything was comfortable and the restaurant attached to the hotel is great! Service was good on both ends and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Definitely hope to plan a return trip again.

Room is pleasant enough and relatively clean. However the heat broke down and hasn’t been working. This is understandable but the front desk had had a very unhelpful attitude, which was to just ask us repeatedly to wait. With a 2 year old in mid-​November past midnight, this isn’t the easiest task.
Otherwise the hotel is fine.

I love this place. It’s more old school than my usual style but the service is elegant and top notch. Great place for privacy and excellent room service. Highly recommended.

This hotel is a gem. It is located in a quiet residential area on the Upper West Side. We stayed in a suite which was a great way to experience what it is like to live there. The hotel was quiet and clean and housekeeping staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant attached is very pleasant and the food is quite good. All in all, we will book this hotel again next time we decide to have a staycation in NYC

Location — It’s a bit away from all the city noise. Plenty of restaurants to choose from within a couple of blocks. Walking distance to Natural history museum and Central park.
I had called the hotel a week in advance and asked for two separate double beds (I travelled with my husband, a seven year old son and I am pregnant). I did not want to get kicked by my son in his sleep :-). My other requests were that we needed a refrigerator in our room, our room be away from the elevator shaft and preferably a City-​view room. The hotel staff honored all of my requests and they even gave us a bigger and better corner room on the 11^th floor.

Great great great place to stay in NYC! It’s right next to the subway, several major bus lines, a pharmacy, and Central Park! The decoration is classy and sophisticated. The room is clean. They even have great shampoos and conditioners! All the staff I’ve talked to during the four nights’ stay were exceptional and very helpful! This place made me want to stay in NYC longer. I’ll definitely book it again whenever I visit NYC the next time!

My parents recently got upgraded to a suite, and I’m really impressed with it. It’s comfortable, contains two TVs, and has a nice view looking north, up Amsterdam. The people who work in the lobby are also very helpful. This is now one of my parents’ favorite hotels in the area. I can see why!
