Veritas Tutors & Test Prep

I hired a Veritas tutor to help prepare my son for the SAT. He was a nice fellow, but Veritas had given him little training (9 hours he later confessed to me) and it was a total waste of money. I tried speaking to Veritas midway through and they reassured me all would be well. As the test day approached, it became clear that my son was unprepared and that they had done little to improve his skills, while charging $ 250 an hour. Fortunately, my son came down with a stomach bug and had to postpone the SAT. I found a terrific tutor recommended by his math teacher who was appalled at how little the Vertias tutor had taught my son even about the structure of the test. In June my son scored 790 Reading, 750 Math, 720 Writing. This after Veritas informed me that my son wasn’t improving because he wouldn’t do the work. My son learned more from the Princeton guide for $ 20 than he did from his Veritas tutor.

These guys were highly recommended to me for GMAT prep by a co-​worker, and I can now fully endorse them as well. They are a national test prep company that only focuses on the GMAT. They are smaller than the giants like Kaplan but are still located in 70 cities around the country. They offer a variety of course structures (weekends, intensive etc…) which are all targeted at working people’s schedules. I did the regular course which was 7 weeks, 2 classes a week, 3 hrs/​class. That works out to 42 hrs of in class instruction, which is a lot if you think about it. They also offer a homework help line and full support website in addition to the printed course materials (which are huge).
The New York instructor Chris, is really the key to why I would recommend them. He is a cool young bright guy, and an amazing instructor. He does a great job connecting with students and you really wish all your college professors had been so good. If you are looking for a course make sure you get him.
They run the classes at the 42^nd street Hyatt which is pretty conveniently located (central at least) and the regular course was $ 1,500. That is slightly higher than some of the others but not by much and I really do think it is a better quality course. It is a lot of work (believe me I’m still doing it every day) but if you want to go to a good business school, GMAT prep is a must. You simply cannot do it cold, even if the material is fresh for you (it’s mostly 5−9^th grade math). Veritas is about as comprehensive a course as you could ask for and they happen to have a very gifted instructor in NYC. Check them out.
