Yoga to the People

It’s a five-​star place to do all things yoga. Clean and a very friendly environment. And pretty good price per class and even the packages.
I promised a friend that I would go with her to hot yoga. I’ve done yoga before, so some of the poses was familiar to me. I went to the Sunday 10AM class (1 ½ hour class) The lady in the front spoke kinda fast, but I understood what she was saying. For newcomers, you pay afterwards, It wasn’t packed or crowded. It was a comfortable amount of people. The instructor was monotone and had an instructional voice. So you know what to do and gave helpful advice throughout the practice. He always encouraged what your body wants and not what he wants. So you can always take breaks between poses. And they may open the door once or twice.
As far as my first time experience, it was good. And different. I learned that I can’t move so fast and quickly between poses. I have be very slow otherwise you’re gonna get dizzy and very red. And drink lots and lots of water. (costs $ 2 for a big bottle)
After class, the showers and bathroom can be a little crowded. For new people, they always give discounts on packages and classes. So if you are committed to it, you should get one because they only discount at time. (i think). The manager or owner was there and I got a free drink. So that was nice of them.
The overall experience was great. I’m not sure if I will be doing hot yoga again, but if I do, I would choose this place to go to.

I recently tried out this location for the Sat 11 am Hot Yoga since it’s closer to my train and 60 mins. First off I have to say I love YTTP and have tried a few of their locations (St Marks you’re next!) and I generally like the style of YTTP. It’s calm and chill. Not super fancy or stuck up. And I like that. This studio is similar to the one on 27^th St, just smaller. I actually like it better. I have to see what they’re like on the weekdays after work, but on Saturdays its great. There aren’t that many people doing hot yoga on a Sat morning, so there is enough space for everyone. I expected it to be more intense and fast paced since it was 26 plus in an hour, which normally is 90 mins. But it wasn’t. Still kept an even pace, and got a good inner peace going on. Instructor is really friendly just like the other YTTPs I’ve been to. She walked around and helped correct postures and gave positive feedback.
Locker room is a little tight, so I can see it getting problematic when there is a bigger crowd, especially with lockers being so close to the showers. But I like that the bathrooms are in the locker rooms, unlike 27^th St. So there are dedicated male and female bathrooms. There are 2 bathrooms in the female side — 1 thats a little bigger with a sink, and a smaller one with just a toilet. The lockers are smaller than the ones at 27^th st — you get cubes here and 2 cubes (¹⁄₃ of a long locker?) @ 27. But I have learned from the get go that you don’t bring a lot of stuff with you to YTTP, so it doesn’t bother me.
This location also uses the online reservation system! So no mad dash down there to secure your spot (unless you’re late.)
I’ll update when I brave the after work crowds.
Oh and the stairs! They’re on the 3^rd floor, but it’s not that bad. Think of it as a warm up. It is a nicer and easier to find building than 38^th and 27^th.

I have tried many yoga spots in NYC and I like Yoga to the People the most. It’s very affordable, convinient and pleasant place to practice. Instructors are all very nice and helpful. Highly recomend this place.

really like this place! the instructors are rotated so i rarely get the same one. so far, i’ve gotten all winners, all kind, really supportive, great class… every time. i only go about once a week and it may just be a matter of time before i get the tall, skinny woman in the bun that everyone’s complaining about. in the meantime, i go to 26^th street and it’s been a great experience. i think it’s also because the students that attend the class are ALSO really nice, and friendly. it’s a nice environment, especially since yoga can be intimidating for beginners.

I have just began going to Yoga, I started about a week ago and have gone every day. Since I have started I have experienced several different teachers, clearly I enjoyed some more than others. Today January 28^th I took the 5:00pm class, the instructor was a tall, slim woman with long brown hair. From the moment I walked in she seemed to be far less friendlier to me than the other people coming in but I made nothing of it. Throughout class I noticed her correcting/​tweaking many of the advanced students postures and poses, with great success I may add, everyone seemed to gain much from her suggestions. Unfortunately she ignores the newer or new students. I also noticed that she tends to ignore the heavier set students in the class. In the week that I have been going I think I am the heaviest person in the class but I have noticed one or two other people who aren’t exactly «yoga slim» In this classes. Today happened to be me and another person who were larger, both of us were COMPLETELY ignored throughout class, the instructor smiled at everybody except for me. I left class and walked home feeling completely unsatisfied and un-​centered, it is a horrible feeling to make an effort on your physical and mental wellbeing and to be treated so coldly in the place that you should feel most comfortable and welcomed. It was by far the WORST class I have taken thus far and was grossly disappointed, hurt and frustrated by her prejudice toward new students and heavier set students. If I go back I will have to make sure to avoid her classes at all costs. I wish I knew her name to provide it to you!
Over all the studio is nice, the mens locker room is very small and could surely due with new floors and some newer larger lockers but noting to make a fuss over. Also, yes their prices are quite low, but when purchasing a class, mat, towel, water… they offer no deal… and it adds up! Each class runs me $ 14-​$ 16

Came here for the 7:30pm and was welcomed with a super friendly instructor. Locker rooms are a bit small but suffice for the necessities. The price are great and the instructor was very clear with directions as well as helpful with any tips. Loved my first hot yoga experience, will definitely come back again. Left leaving so relaxed, cleansed and at eased. Great little escape from the frigid ny streets to a state of internal peace.

If you’re a Yoga lover like myself, you will definitely love this place.

i have been part of the YttP community since 2009, when I became a student at the 27^th street studio. In the summer of 2010 I participated in the 200hr Teacher Training. I have remained here ever since as a perpetual student, now also teaching classes and working directly with the yoga students and students of the teacher trainings.
I would like to represent my experience here because my point of view is so different from that of helena h.
When I came to my first class at the 27^th street studio, I was a dedicated Bikram student, attending classes 5 days a week in New York City, Boston and Connecticut. I was brought by my friend John who had switched from our regular Bikram studio to save money. I was also definitely open to saving some money (Bikram yoga is often prohibitively expensive) but not if the experience was in anyway compromised.
After my first class I was impressed with the class. The studio was nice and clean, the teacher was focused and knowledgable, the students had a high level of practice and there was a sense of community.
I signed up for the month and came almost everyday, sometimes twice. During that period I got to know many of the teachers and students. My practice improved. I felt that the teachers were committed to my and little by little my practice improved. My body looked and felt better. My attitude in my practice softened and improved and I also felt different outside of the studio, in my life.
I decided to participate in the teacher training to deepen my practice and to spend the weekends studying yoga.
The training is an overview of basic yoga theory, anatomy and postures. Graduates are prepared to teach classes. And required/​supported to do so successfully to graduate. Yoga to the People is a unique in that it provides graduates the opportunity to practice teaching. YttP has the resources (multiple studios/​class times in NYC, the commitment of its senior teaching staff, and most importantly the support of its student base). Teaching yoga is a practice in itself. Communication with the class improves with experience, and like the yoga postures, the only way to gain that experience is with practice.
My journey through the teacher training into a teaching role was transformative. I became deeply connected to my group and the YttP teachers who worked with us. I was provided the opportunity to look deeply within and see more clearly my habits and thought patterns. I was in many ways trapping myself by the way I saw others, the world and myself. I began to understand that this (my creation of my perspective and personality) in many ways restricted me from realizing all that i wanted for myself in my life.
The connectedness I felt and the community I found at YttP supported me in moving forward with more confidence and ultimately more freely.
I have since continued my yoga education and practice. I have never left YttP. With the support of the strong community there, I continue to become both a stronger teacher and student.
I have become a more precise and conscious practitioner. I have more compassion for myself and thus I relate to and communicate better with others. I view the world differently. I feel more comfortable as myself.
I strongly recommend YttP.

This was my first time visiting a YTTP location. I have previously done bikram, but it had been several months (and my last session had been a bitch). Anyhow, when I realized a friend had invited me to Saturday brunch a mere block away, it seemed like the perfect time to re-​start my practice.
I attended a 11am 60 min class. First things first — best smelling hot yoga studio ever. Must be new carpets, but really — amazingly fresh smelling. Instructor was great, but I missed her name. The 60 min class was divided into 20 min segments (warm-​up, standing, and floor). Several asanas seemed rushed, especially camel pose. But, frankly, I HATE camel pose (it’s always my kicker) so I didn’t mind too terribly that it went so quickly. Not as much time for rest periods/​savasana in this 60 minute sequence.
Showers were hot. Dressing area was stocked with hair bands. Rented towels and they smelled nice. Lockers avail (bring own lock).
Overall a very good experience. I appreciate having a Bikram alternative. (While I like the intense heat of Bikram and the instructor «dialogue,» I consider Bikram himself to be a total chump. He kinda disgusts me and I don’t like feeding his pocket.)
Wish this studio’s location and schedule coincided with mine more. I was surprised that I experienced muscle soreness for 2 days afterwards but thought perhaps that was due to the shorter savasanas combined with my total out-​of-​shapeness. Brunch never tasted so good (seriously). Felt great to start practice again.
Note: they offer discount packages that can be used at this and the 27^th street location. At the conclusion of class, I was offered an additional discount on any pkg purchase (I believe she said 10% off), only good on the day of your first visit.

I was hesitant to try hot yoga because A) I hate being hot B) I was skeptical of how effective it really was. However, I can confidently relay that my heart rate was racing the entire time and it was an extremely powerful exercise. It was difficult to get through, but it felt great to finish the class. I think I’ll stick to my vinyasa flows at Equinox, but I’d recommend this place for good instruction, clean premises and a killer workout.

I love yoga to the people! I’ve been using both Chelsea studios regularly for about a year and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. I love that they are so affordable; as a student, I would not be able to continue practicing if not for them, so I’m really grateful for it! The instructors are – for the most part – fantastic. They really know what they’re doing, pay a lot of individual attention, and are mostly very friendly and good about answering questions after class. I also like that they have so many different instructors; everyone has a different style and it’s great to take bits of knowledge from each instructor and piece it all together to improve your practice.
This studio is smaller than 27^th street but I prefer it. I know some people have said it seems less clean, but I disagree. The hot room looks much newer and I like how intimate the setting is. Plus, 9PM classes are awesome! Hardly anyone goes so you get a lot of individual attention and the room isn’t as crazy hot as the early evening classes.
I will say, however, that I do agree with some earlier reviewers that there are some instructors to avoid. I wish they had a schedule so I could pick and choose who I would go to. The woman with the tight bun and serious attitude – ugh, I cannot stand her! I avoid her classes at all costs because of her condescending attitude and rude comments. She actually called the entire class fat one day – horrible! A lot of people use yoga as a meditative practice to get in touch with their body in a non-​judgmental way. Calling everyone fat and lazy is horrible period, but especially in this context.
That beings said, love this place!

I first got introduced to Yoga to the People through a Living Social voucher I purchased.
If you love bikram/​hot yoga then this is definitely the place to come. This location is not as spacious as their 27^th street location. However, I prefer a smaller studio since it doesn’t get as packed. I think they might fit like a good 20 – 30 people at most after work hours. However, be warned it is first come first serve. The best thing to do when you get here is pay for your class, if you haven’t already, and set down your mat.
If you get here too early just be warned that the studio might not be open or they might not buzz you upstairs right away.
The price per class is $ 8, however, you can buy various packages and can save a ton of money. They have even updated their website and you can save your spot & pay online the day of a class. If you need to rent or purchase anything like a yoga mat, towels, shorts, water, etc. they have all of that available for an extra cost. Everything except the shorts is $ 2. They even have I think these nutrient packs for your water for 1 or 2 dollars, as well.
The staff is extremely friendly at this place & I always find myself coming back. The only downside for this location is that they offer less times than the 27^th street location, unless that has changed in the past few months. Regardless, I love Yoga to the People!

I attended the 5p class this past week because it gave me enough time to make it to the studio right after work. It took quite some time to buzz me in, and when I walked into the studio the young woman behind the desk appeared to be pissed/​annoyed/​not happy to be there. Anyhow, I started to ask her questions regarding a revised scheduled that will go in effect in a few weeks, and her response was delivered in a condescending tone. I needed to ask her one more question about the current special and when it would expire; she couldn’t give me an answer! After that lack luster little session, I needed to use the bathroom urgently and forgot to pay for my class. I got dressed, locked up my belongings and waited for the yoga room to clear up so I can set my mat. I peaked my head into the room to find a spot and the instructor from the previous class told me that I needed to wait. Really?! I was just looking not walking into a room full people that are wrapping up their intense workout.
The actual session was alright, it was led by the rude woman whom I met at the desk. She seemed to be a bit disconnected throughout the class. At the end of class, I went to pay for my class and apologized for not paying beforehand. I should have just left without paying but that’s not me.
I will definitely not be attending this studio, instead I will happily attend the 27^th street; much nicer and cleaner and friendlier!

I go here every Friday until my 15 class cards expired. Most of the time, the classes aren’t full because we are not buzzed to get in. Sometimes, I have to wait for a student from the previous class to leave the bulding or have my friend to come down and get me. Overall, hot yoga is great, but waiting to get in is a drag.

Hot yoga is like smack for me. If I don’t go for a few days, I get all cranky and get that craving for a fix. You don’t want to be around me when I am going through wtihdrawals. It could get ugly.
In any case, I have an unlimited YTTP living social deal and I can happily report that I have been visiting this location and the one on 27^th St. They are owned by the same guy and they are «affiliated» with the one in Brooklyn.
This studio is a lot smaller than the one on 27^th St. The changing room is half the size and you just can’t help but feel like a sardine for 2 hours.
The actual yoga room is also smaller and can hold half the people as the 27^th St. studio.
Normally, I don’t skimp on the stars for hot yoga studios. If I get a good workout, and the people are friendly and the changing rooms are decent, I won’t gripe too much. But I have to say that the yoga instructor (who was also manning the register) was a bit snarky with my friend. He asked her if she did yoga and she said, «yes.» That should’ve been it, but he pressed her for the location as if he didn’t believe her. What was that all about? I didn’t get it.
Anyhow, he was actually a good instructor but too bad the room got so humid, that I felt like passing out after 30 minutes. I struggled through this session, but that’s OK. There are days when it just feels like Hell. That which doesn not kill you only makes you stronger.
I probably won’t come back to this studio, but I’ll definitely be a regular over at the 27^th St studio. Neil, the owner, is so nice. He’s given me a bunch of free drinks and also a coupon for 25% packages. I mean, 30 classes for $ 150? YOU CANNOT BEAT THAT!

The initial pain you feel after the first class lessens after your 2^nd&3^rd visit. There’s just so many people for the 5&7pm classes, the class size is the one downfall of YTTP. I recommend going earlier for the 3pm or even the 5pm one. 7pm class– you’re left wondering which circle of Dante’s Inferno you’re in, what did you ever do to deserve it, and WHY YOUR NEIGHBOR’S CROTCH is right in your face? only mere centimeters away in what may or may not result in inappropriate touching/​unwanted contact via dripping beads of sweat.
You get to know your neighbors more personally than you’d like, that is all.

Yoga to the people is the most affordable and effective studio I have found in New York! $ 8 dollar classes are an amazing deal for 90 minutes of practice.
New students will find a very open and caring environment. Teachers will take the time to help you through the poses, assist you getting the best of your practice and encourage you to continue. Regulars will find an incredibly warm and personal experience with constant encouragement and the opportunity to build an incredibly beautiful practice.
All of the teachers are equally amazing and dedicated to the practice, you will not regret coming back!
I started going to the 27^th street studio, but have since then fallen in love with the more intimate and bright 26^th street satelite. The studio itself is clean and bright with a wall of windows and two walls of mirrors comfortably accomodates at least 40 yogis. Benches in the lounge allow you to cool off before heading for the showers.
Hot yoga is definitely a practice for those that are willing to dedicate themself to it, but if you invest the time and energy, you will never regret it. I come four times a week and find that Yoga to the People has helped change my life!

This was my first Yoga to the People class, and I really liked it. I was a bit unsure about it because I had read mixed reviews of Yoga to the People. Others have said that the classes are packed, the instructors are unhelpful and that the changing areas suck. Well, I thought everything was great for $ 8. I took the Traditional Hot Yoga class at 3 p.m. on a Friday. It was just like the Bikram yoga classes I’ve taken before, but for only $ 8. It was crowded, but no one knocked me and everyone fit. However, I bet the evening classes do get packed, as this was at 3. The instructor was helpful and corrected my form three times, which is as much attention as I received from the more expensive Bikram instructors. Also, the locker rooms are small, but the women’s room was actually bigger than the Bikram studio I went to in Pasadena, CA. Considering this is NYC, and considering I only paid $ 8 for a 90 minute class, I could handle the small space. Oh and if you’re a Columbia student like myself, the locker room is definitely kept way cleaner than the one at the Dodge Gym (gross).
P. S. It’s an additional $ 2 for a mat rental, towel rental, or water bottle, if you don’t bring your own.

YTTP just keeps getting better! They opened up this ‘satellite studio’ to the one on 27^th street, just a couple of blocks away. The locker rooms and resting area is smaller but still comfortable. The studio space itself is slightly smaller but I love it b/​c there’s mirrors on both sides of the room. Everything is new so it’s nice and clean!
They still have the same amount of bathrooms and showers but I love how the bathroom is in the men’s locker room. This completely eliminates any waiting for a bathroom b/​c in the 27^th st location there’s always a line b/​c the bathrooms are shared (all girls take FOREVER: p)
The schedule is mostly afternoon and PM classes. Go here for a much less crowded class. Less people means more individual attention. It’s the same great instructors, same prices, same area, and all the other good-​ness you can expect from the folks from the 27^th street location.
Oh and if you have a package from the 27^th st location you can use it towards classes at this studio.
I always try to include one thing in a review which could be better. For this studio I would prob have to say;
1. Somehow make it bigger
2. Add more classes
