There are some things I cannot resist. Yoga, far infrared heating panels, big beautiful bright studios, and talented yoga instructors are some of those things. Offer those things under a new student special ($ 20 for two weeks!), and I’m there.
For two weeks, I learned the real meaning of «power yoga.» These flow classes (sometimes heated, sometimes candlelit, sometimes not) were kick ass. Some of the classes bordered on a boot camp vibe, without much, if any, rest time. No bother; I have no problem laying around in child’s pose under the magical infrared panels while the other, model-​esque students turned themselves into upside-​down human pretzels.
The weekend classes were packed to maximum capacity, but the weekday classes were roomy and comfortable. What’s more, on weekdays, they offer a few donation-​based classes, so if you can schedule it in, you’re set for affordable, top quality yoga.
They make the whole mat-​carrying conundrum a thing of the past, too: mat rental is no sweat at $ 2, or, with a membership, you can store your own mat at the studio. There are other conveniences sprinkled in, too, like tons of individual changing rooms, and free filtered water with the purchase of a Yoga Vida branded water bottle.
Overall, this studio left me a little breathless but I’ll be back whenever I’m craving good, powerful sequences.

I love yoga vida! It’s my new afterschool unwind. I come here as often as I can, and even though I have to bring my mat always, it worth the hour of hard work! At first, I was super worried because the mats were so close together (I was used to classes at the y) but I realized because it was so challenging and I was surrounded by very skilled yogis, the class becomes a unifying community. I have learned so much, discovered many new ways to stretch by different instructors’ poses, and I have become dedicated to practicing yoga. I strongly recommend Kate and Nathan for first timers because of how encouraging they are! Be prepared to sweat a lot in heated flow!

First off, I think this place is bangin’ in terms of amenities/​cleanliness/​friendly staff. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, so the 3 stars I’m giving it should really be more like 3.5. I’m only hesitating to drop more stars because I felt like the space gets a little crowded (perhaps they could cap the class sizes a bit more?) and in general I’m not a huge fan of brightly lit yoga practices (this is however, entirely a personal preference).
My instructor, Will, gave good adjustments and was attentive and direct with his instructions. the flow was good, albeit a bit slow, but challenging nonetheless. honestly i’m just spoiled by the darker /​candlelit style classes and I’ve grown accustomed to flowing in dim light vs. brightly lit spaces (no one needs to see my yoga struggleface ugh!)
Still, it’s a great option in the area and people should definitely give it a shot!

I went to Yoga Vida on a Sunday, instructor Vivian Lu blew my mind. From the well placed music to her incredible pose adjustments. She had my body moving in ways I didnt think were possible.
If you are looking to take your practice to the next level I highly recommend taking Vivian’s class!

I went to a community class here with Vivian.
I came with no expectations because I had never been to a community class before, and this was my first time at Yoga Vida. I was delightfully surprised by how good it was! The class was well placed, Vivian was attentive — walking around the class giving gentle adjustments when needed, and I felt challenged. I would say it’s good for all skill levels as options are given in various poses.
It was much better than a lot of other studios I been to and the space is remarkably big and bright for NY?!? I would definitely come back to take a class with Vivian!

I am so impressed by Yoga Vida. After months of hardcore Bikram yoga, I was looking for an experience that was slower, less intense and more meditative/​reflective. Their two weeks of unlimited yoga for only $ 20 was a fantastic deal and allows you to visit both locations. Select «first visit» for buying the package. I had an amazing candlelit hot yoga class by Todd Rengel! He taught little adjustments that I normally don’t experience in yoga which were very effective and helpful. His music soundtrack was amazing! I had to stop myself from dancing on the mat. I find that their hot yoga is a pleasantly warm experience that maintains a balance between challenging you while also allowing you to feel centered without hyperventilating on the mat.
For hardcore Bikram yogis who enjoy the full intensity, please note that it is less hot but still a wonderful experience. The music, the candelight and the gentle instruction lends itself to a peaceful, rejuvenating space for reflection. They also offer cool and creative workshops combining yoga and acupuncture or yoga and aromatherapy, which I am grateful for as many yoga studios do not have such creative combinations. They also offer donation based 50⁄50 community classes for the yogi on a budget.
This studio has a larger space than the other location, cushions, blocks, blankets, everything you could possibly need for an incredible yoga experience. Mat and large towel rental is $ 4. You can also store your mat there for a monthly fee. They have many changing rooms, some couches and cubbies inside of the yoga room for you to store your things. I didn’t see any showers or lockers, but that might be the only thing absent. I really loved my experience in this studio and plan to be back!

I had been interested in Yoga Vida for a long time but never made time to try it until I saw it was in Class pass. I took the Heated Flow class with Derek and really really loved it!
It was a tough workout and was exciting and different from other yoga classes I’ve tried but was also reminiscent of the Yoga to the People vibe which I guess you could say I «grew up on» when I first moved to New York.
A lot of Unilocalers said the studio is crowded, but I was lucky enough to come on a day it wasn’t, so the huge studio was a welcome surprise. The space is huge and clean and great.
Derek seemed very passionate about what he was teaching the class and I really appreciated it. I always find the best workouts I have are directly correlated to the teachers enthusiasm.
I’ll definitely be back to try other classes and teachers.
The class was so great I nearly forgot to mention that the front desk person I came into contact with was super stressed and not so welcoming. I had to figure out where things were without her help. And even after I asked, she didn’t seem happy to share the info with me or anyone. Maybe she had a rough day…
Luckily, you’re going for the awesome workout and teachers!
Oh PS not for newbies though, would suggest taking an intro yoga class first. I already have a good grasp on yoga but found it challenging to follow along!

As a larger man, starting out doing yoga is kind of challenging. One thing that people my size really don’t want is to be bumping into other people, especially when it’s a foot. The beginner’s class was held in a small, small, small room. But it wasn’t just that it was small, it was CRAMMED with people! I had a guys foot in my face for most of the session, and it was impossible not to drip sweat onto other people’s blankets (by the way, the blankets were kinda shoddy compared to other places I’ve been to.)
I’ve definitely had better experiences.

I have mixed thoughts about this studio. I’ve taken both heated flow and heated slow flow. It’s a very large studio, and the classes are large. But it’s also cheaper than a lot of places and the instructors alway seem to be giving adjustments though.
Their entire business model seems a little annoying though. I get having to pay for mat rentals. I even get having to pay for a towel. But having a sign in the bathroom reminding you that small towels are not for class? Saying that you need to give a donation to fill up your water bottle unless you buy their water bottle?

The studio is nice and spacious but at least for my class the instructor was not good. It seemed as though she memorized the yoga poses and was dictating them to class. When I do yoga I want to exercise as well as meditate; however, the meditation and spirituality parts were definitely missing in this class. It’s more like an easy exercise if that’s what you’re looking for. It might depend on the instructor though.

Yoga Vida is the best yoga experience I have ever had. The teachers are caring and bring a level of energy and light-​heartedness to the classes, offering a complete yoga practice. As in every studio, each teacher’s style, level of challenge is unique. The studio is clean and pleasant without a lot of bells and whistles. The membership — which is very reasonable for a NYC yoga studio — covers both their NoHo and Union Square locations, which I’ve found to be very convenient. The only drawback is that neither studio has showers, which can make it difficult to go before work or between various commitments.
I’ve really found a strong sense of community here. I’ve recently moved uptown so this is no longer convenient for me, but I will be sad to leave. Highly recommend Yoga Vida!

I was in town on business and wanted to make sure I didn’t completely miss my practice. I signed up for the fantastic first visit deal and intended on really making the most of it during my four days in the city, but long work days and sooo much walking really harshed my intentions. That being said, I managed to make it to a 7am flow class with Samantha. From the moment I entered the studio, the staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. I felt right at home. Samantha’s class was, hand’s down, one of the BEST yoga classes I’ve ever taken. She took time to adjust our postures, played fantastic music and had a great sense of humor. I would happily go again the next time I find myself in NYC. Thank you Yoga Vida!

Everyone was really nice, and I was actually surprised by how big & nice-​looking the studio is! The pictures I had seen of it do not do it justice! I had two instructors in my class, because one girl was training, so I did receive adjustments (mostly everyone did), which was nice. It was a good workout and a good flow, but it wasn’t super unique. I felt like I could have gone to any yoga studio. There was nothing too personal about it, maybe in part because there are SO many people in the class! I definitely prefer smaller sized studios & classes. However, I didn’t feel cramped — people were pretty respectful with where they placed their mats, so I did have sufficient room. It just lacked a personal feel.
The music was actually really good, but it was completely unrelated to the movements. I think that if a studio is going to have a slightly modern playlist with recognizable songs, they need to find a way to really connect the beat of the music to the movements. In other yoga studios I’ve been to, they stress the importance of this, but the music was never acknowledged at Yoga Vida.
I’d probably come back if the class fit with my schedule, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit this studio.

Nice studio space and people are very friendly. I took «flow» and «slow flow». Slow flow was a more toned down version of flow and quite honestly not challenging enough use of exercise time in retrospect (I wish the instructor gave modifications for more challenging options).
Overall impression was slightly too «gym yoga» for me, personally. In each one the instructors added weird non yoga elements — crunches, Pilates type movements.
I mean I understand the intentions are good — getting in more exercise for the buck or something. But I come to yoga to improve my yoga practice. I can go to a gym or a boot camp style class for that kind of thing. Also as a previous review said, if you’re looking to take your yoga up to the next level, the instructor does not give enough instructions to improve your alignment.
Depends on what you’re looking for, and others may like this just fine. But for me, personally, at least the classes I’ve tried were just a three star experience.

I recently signed up the $ 20 two week unlimited yoga deal, which is a real steal. Since I am off from work I have been able to really take advantage of it and I am really enjoying it. Since I am new to yoga, I have been taking the basic classes. My first class was with Savannah and I really liked how she taught the class. She took the time to break down each pose and show how far apart your feet should be, etc., so we could make sure we were doing it right. Then she linked all the poses together so we could flow from one to the other. I really appreciated this because this is exactly what I needed as a newbie.
I have tried taking yoga classes at the gym and hated it because they went so fast and I had no idea what I was doing so I found it painful and unenjoyable.
I really like that Yoga Vida offers different kinds of classes as well as a number of time slots. Other yoga places don’t have classes after 6:30 p.m. during the week. I like that Yoga Vida has later classes because it is hard for me to get to a 6:00 or 6:30 p.m. class during the week.
I am definitely considering a monthly membership because I am now hooked.

I’ve fixed the issue I have with overcrowded yoga studios by not attending 6:30 or 7:00 classes anymore. The 8:00pm and other off-​hours classes are very pleasant. However, I still think that the signups for peak hours should be limited to at least 10 less people.

Color me way very surprised here.
I had no idea truly what to expect when I got to the studio because I felt like reading the reviews people either loved it or hated it. I happened to love it overall. Check in was a breeze but I would have loved the receptionist when I said I was new to the studio to really walk me around the place to show me where stuff was rather than pointing because it was such a large space. I know she was on the phone but she could have had the person wait for 2 minutes. Minor gripe.
The class itself was in a very large airy room (Broadway) and I got to put my mat right next ot a sunny spot! And the sun helped get me through because this class was a hard one! I took the community class with Diana Paschal and I thought she brought a nice spiritual element to the class. And oh good lord did she work us! Don’t go to her class expecting an easy one. She is also a fantastic adjuster. She really helped me tweak my down dog (which I have never liked doing) and actually pushed me much farther into bow pose than I could do myself which was kind of empowering. And as someone who has been doing yoga consistently for about a year it’s nice to get pushed and shaken out of your comfort zone a bit. I also give her major kudos because she played some of the most relaxing songs during savasana that i have heard in a while. Would have loved an om to open and seal the practice but truly not the end of the world that it was not there. I overall really enjoyed her class.
Looking forward to trying more!

After attending Yoga Vida for a few months, I had to cancel my membership. I was not getting the yoga experience I wanted. Adjustments are important to me in a yoga class and many of the instructors at YV did not do adjustments. I also felt no interaction with the instructors. I would go in to class and leave without feeling like I was really getting anything out of my practice. Also, as the weather started warming up, the vinyasa classes would leave me sweaty. There is no AC on in the classes and for some reason the instructors never put the ceiling fans on. Combined with no showers here, it was getting tough to come to a morning class before work.
YV is very affordable so if you’re a student or on a tight budget, I recommend YV. But this will be a more hands off type of yoga, which I know some people are perfectly fine with. Just know that if you’re like me and want more of a personal experience, this is not it. I will say they were helpful with canceling my membership and were responsive in emails. This is a great studio, if you’re okay and comfortable in your own practice that you don’t want attention from the instructors or want a variety of yoga styles (YV is mainly vinyasa flow and basic vinyasa classes).

I’ll kick it off with the con (s). Classes can get pretty crowded/​unable to spread out your arms like butterfly wings with popular teachers and after work times (5 – 7 PM classes). Some teachers will stay at the front of the room and focus completely on teaching and guiding, rather than coming to the students and re-​align our positions. I am not too picky about this because I’m a visual learner and need to see the teacher doing the pose before wrecking my body due to hearing something incorrectly.
The goods. I love this studio without a doubt. It’s probably one of the prettiest studios I’ve ever been to and perfectly fits the beautiful dream-​esque NYC yoga studio that any one could imagine. There’s always someone consistently sitting at the front desk unlike rotating teachers who man the desk, class, phone calls, mat rentals, side chatting (just no). There’s enough cubbies for all the students inside the room, very nice bathrooms, overall nice elegant interior.
Teachers. I’ve taken classes from at least 8 different teachers here (all flow or deep flow). They all brought a good variety to the class and none of them seemed to repeat any of the same poses and exercises in their classes. I’m going to slightly regret saying this because I don’t want her class to become extremely packed (or is it already)…but I hands down loved Jessie Barr’s class the most. Great mixture of vocal instruction, diverse poses, and mental therapy– these are my personal needs with yoga teachers, I understand this is not the best fit for everyone.
Try Yoga Vida. From what I’ve been hearing it’s one of the more affordable studios in NYC and I know we ALL appreciate «affordable» in this chaotic city.

I love this Yoga Vida studio because they offer donation-​based classes (50⁄50 community classes) almost every day, and at reasonable times too! (2PM and 7:30PM, the latter which I can actually make after work.) The studio consists of two big rooms, one small room, a couple of bathrooms, and a large entryway with plenty of coat hooks and shoe cubbies.
The community classes are all taught by graduates of Yoga Vida’s teacher training program. They’re normally held in the small room and are rarely crowded — of the few classes I’ve been to, I don’t think any had more than 8 people. The classes are pretty standard vinyasa flows: sun salutations, warriors, forward bends, backbends, and maybe a shoulder stand to end class. Not much focus on the spiritual aspect, which I prefer. Proceed with caution if you’re new to yoga though, as these classes are geared towards people who already have a basic yoga foundation — the teachers generally go around adjusting more than demonstrating up front, and don’t always give out pointers on proper alignment.

There’s nothing like doing yoga in a giant room with tons of windows that look out onto architechturally interesting buildings. It really feels like you’re in NYC but away from the chaos.
The facilities are lovely and clean, and though the bathrooms are small, there are a number of changing spaces and giant mirrors, so you don’t have to crowd the bathroom just too spruce yourself up after class.

It’s time for an update! It’s been three years and I still frequent Yoga Vida. That speaks volumes. I’ve been to dozens of yoga studios in NYC (everything from Yoga to the People to Kula and Lyons Den — check out my «Namaste» list) and YV is still my go-​to.
First of all, it’s slightly cheaper than surrounding studios ($ 18 to drop in, $ 150 for a 10-​pack). Both locations are also on ClassPass.
But more importantly, the instructors are consistently great. I do have my favorites, but regardless of the teacher you know you’ll get a fun, athletic, and challenging practice here. Yoga Vida focuses on fast-​paced vinyasa (they’ve since added «deep flow»), so expect to sweat and feel your muscles working!
They also have a ton of classes throughout the day at both studios, some as late as 9pm. There are also reasonably-​priced workshops on everything from inversions to anatomy held every month.
However, there are some caveats…
It’s a spacious studio, but peak time classes can be extremely packed, so don’t be surprised if you are an inch away from someone’s mat. I find that to be the case at many studios, so it doesn’t bother me much.
Also, it may not be as personal as some other studios because of the class size. If you’re looking for more hands-​on, intimate experience, try the 7pm Advanced classes held in the smaller room.

This is an amazing studio. The 666 location is beautiful (the University place one is okay). But the teachers are amazing. Its the perfect place to welcome all ranges of yogis! If its your first time, if you want a hard class with abs, if you want a more meditative experience — they have a teacher for you. Try a few different classes out for a week and I guarantee you will be hooked! It fuels your mind and body without being overly spiritual. Prices are comparable if not a good deal in the city. (side note: I did teacher training here and I highly recommend it — a very balanced and knowlegable education.)

Finding the perfect yoga studio and instructor is such a personal thing. What might work for me might be the opposite of what you want. After leaving my beloved studios in Santa Monica I’m on the hunt for my new favorite. While Yoga Vida may not have been exactly like what I left behind, it’s a wonderful and convenient option in a great space, so I’ll definitely be returning.
I love how spacious the room is, and it gets beautiful natural light which just seems to enhance the practice somehow. Reception was super friendly and helpful on my first time there, and they made sure to let me know about their first-​timer special of $ 20 for 2 weeks of unlimited yoga. As drop-​in classes are $ 18 each normally, this is a fantastic deal.
Most of the classes are some version of a flow practice, including slow flow, prenatal flow, and deep flow. I’m intrigued by their candlelit and live music flow classes! They have plenty of class times daily (and another studio on University) so there’s plenty of opportunity to visit. It’s a pretty oasis in the middle of the city and a great place to get your yoga on, and I’m looking forward to exploring the different class and instructor options.

Alright, I’ll say it, the best teacher in NY, maybe the world is here (with my very unofficial rankings). His name is Domenic and if you haven’t taken his class yet, you’re doing yourself a real disservice. He will make your life miserable in a good way (do we really need to do a third full wheel in a row?!). I’ll also give a shout out to my favorite girl here, Chloe since she certainly deserves it.
As for the space itself, the studios are huge by NY standards which is nice, though with the popularity of the place it can get really tight. No showers and a small changing area, but it’s near my apartment so no big deal. Definitely a young crowd here which is nice… that basically means there’s talent and it doesn’t smell like bengay. Get yourself a 10 pack here, you won’t regret it.

Everything about Yoga Vida makes them a great intermediate between larger chains like YogaWorks and smaller, boutiquey studios. Like YogaWorks, the yoga is more athletic and attracts a more «gym-​going» crowd. Classes are larger, so instruction is slightly less personal. For example, I took a handful of classes here and not one instructor asked about students’ names or possible injuries.
The instruction itself was solid, though. To my surprise, they randomly extended my weeklong Yoga Passbook pass to 2 weeks for free (!), so I managed to try several different classes at different times. Flow, Deep Flow, and Candlelit Flow were all dynamic, moderately intense and sweaty — despite the room being very large, we fogged up its windows every time! Don’t be fooled by the word «candlelit» and think you’re in for a soothing, meditative experience.
All the classes featured music which tended to be more modern than spiritual — sometimes slightly distracting rap, sometimes really nice atmospheric pop.
They only offer flow/​vinyasa-​style classes, none of which are divided by level. Warning to absolute beginners: most poses were not explained at all, so get your basics elsewhere.
The space is large and clean, beautiful but not as flashy as the bigger yoga chains. There are no locker rooms or showers, but plenty of changing stalls. Bring valuables into the classroom; coat hooks and cubbies for shoes are in the hallway. You can rent mat/​towel ($ 2 each) if needed.
Despite the fact that they’re practically on the NYU campus, where most people aren’t constrained to a 9-​to-​5, the studio is still calmest during off-​hours. Still, none of the evening classes I attended were overcrowded, especially compared to my experiences at other studios (large and small alike).
Their prices are the most reasonable I’ve seen yet. Drop-​in (for students/​faculty) is $ 11, as opposed to the typical $ 17! The monthly student/​faculty rate works out to less than the cost of a monthlong Groupon at some other places. They run an intro deal of $ 20 for 2 weeks which is also pretty great.
All considered, Yoga Vida is definitely a worthy candidate for a yoga studio to commit to.

Has the time finally come to review the lovely yoga studio I’ve been married to the past 4 years of medical school? Le sigh.
Since 2010, every time I had a tickle in my belly to review Yoga Vida, I shied away. It’s like writing a review on your own dog. You just love her so much, how could you possibly be objective?! Anyway, obviously, YV is my jam.
I moved mountains to get to Dom’s classes over the years, but Jessie, Hilaria, Stephanie and Heather are wonderful as well. Just so you know, I prefer the sweaty power yoga flow-​types of classes with just a hint of wise words or a single uplifting anecdote at the beginning of class — a combination that Dom has perfected.
I just moved to LA and am searching for a replacement studio, but you better bet YV is where I’ll practice when I am in NYC again.
