History

The Courtyard Newark at the University of Delaware offers all the services and amenities of a fine, business-​class hotel, while also enhancing the educational and research opportunities for faculty and staff in the University’s internationally respected hotel, restaurant and institutional management program.

The four-​story, 126-​room Courtyard by Marriott hotel is on UD’s Laird Campus, off New London Road in Newark, next to the newly renovated John M. Clayton Hall Conference Center. The convenient location is ideal for serving visitors to the conference center or other University events, as well as the larger community.

The hotel is owned by the University of Delaware and managed by the Shaner Hotel Group. Shaner Hotels is a major holder of Marriott franchises, and operates 30 hotels in the United States.

I had an overall nice stay at the Courtyard Newark– University of Delaware.
The rooms were spacious and clean. The staff was friendly. The elevators were a little slow, but I feel that’s standard for some older hotels. We were with a wedding group, and the breakfast buffet on Sunday morning was nice as well.
My only issue was with parking. There were three weddings there and I couldn’t find a spot to park. In a panic and about to miss my shuttle to the wedding, a staff member kindly moved her car so I can rush along my way.
It was cool how close to campus this hotel was. There weren’t any disruptions by the local college kids, but they were close enough so I could reminisce about my own college experiences.

Loved this hotel. Located right in the center of the college campus, it had every amenity that we needed. Great little gym with pool and jacuzzi, Starbucks in lobby and small pet yard outside that we didn’t get to use, but certainly will next time. The room was perfect, small balcony, comfy bed, paul Mitchell hair products that shocked me, and very nice linens. Everyone that met was kind, especially the bartenders. Walking distance to town, and extremely clean and safe area. When we return to Newark, we will stay here. This was
Not the cheapest hotel in the area, but was definitely worth every penny.

Newer hotel very close to University of Delaware campus, clean, great amenities. Light on the «free» breakfast for a pricey hotel AND what hotel now a days doesn’t offer in room safes! Even the hotels in Omaha Nebraska have in room safes!

My wife and I have been staying at the Marriot for the past few years. On our recent visit we arrived back at the hotel unable to find any parking. It was about 11:00 pm as I drove around there were numerous students walking around. No on big deal its a college area, but as I was attempting to park, when a spot finally became available students were parking there own cars in there. Frustrated I went to the check in to find out what the hell is going on. A very polite young man said ohh yes we are aware its a problem, but we dont like to tow students cars. Why are they there I asked, he said because they get ticketed in the other lots. Ohh really, now I am getting mad, I say then were the hell should I park, he instructed me to another lot on school grounds not Marriot property and said you shouldnt get a ticket there. Well after a few unpleasant words came out of my mouth I told him well since you dont like towing cars of those who are not paying customers I doubt you will tow a customers car. I left it right in front under the overhang and said. I will be back in a few hours. Sad. Just really sad Marriot shame on you. So in closing I spend my money elsewere and drive five minutes.

Live close by and just discovered there is a Starbucks inside. Great to pop in and grab a coffee. Only downside it’s only open 5−10am and after 5pm. Still, nice to have a Starbucks in the area as the one on Main Street is always busy and you ha e to pay to park. Be aware, the don’t take they Starbucks card.

Consistent with the Marriott brand! This is a great property. First, check in was fantastic. The host who assisted me was very pleasant, provided quick and efficient service and offered several suggestions for what to do during my evening in Newark.
The room was very modern, well-​kept and incredibly spacious!
There is a café area that serves Starbucks coffee and beverages as well as other food offerings. For a small outlet, they had a great menu. I would highly recommend the breakfast burrito! It was delicious!
My stay was short, so I didn’t get to use the other amenities but the hotel does have a pool, fitness center and small convenience item sales area.
The location is ideal if you are visiting the University of Delaware. It was an easy walk to campus and just a short walk through the campus to the Main Street area of Newark which had many great restaurant options!
The property is also pet friendly!

When staying in Newark, this is the hotel in which to stay. From checkin to checkout everything was perfect. Checkin was easy and I cannot say enough about all of the front desk staff. My room was large, clean and very comfortable. This hotel is close to main street where there are many shops and restaurants. However, the food at the hotel (Bistro) was reasonably priced and very good. The bartender was wonderful and I very much enjoyed chatting with him. I highly recommended staying here!

This Courtyard is a very high quality Marriott property, complemented by the fact that it is a «teaching hotel» as part of the University’s hospitality management program. I’ve stayed here for work, and feel very welcome by the staff and enjoy the consistency of clean and modern rooms. The hotel is very close to Main Street and a wide variety of food and entertainment options. While I haven’t stayed at any of the other hotels in town, this is a great choice for a convenient on-​campus hotel in Newark.

On a recent business trip to Delaware, we booked our stay at the closest Marriott hotel which happened to be the Marriott Courtyard Newark, which is right on the University of Delaware campus in Newark, DE.
To get to the hotel you drive right through the center of the campus, then along Main Street past all of the shopping and dining options, and finally up the hill past the dorms and off-​campus housing. The Courtyard is perched mid-​way up the hill near some of the dorms. For parents coming to town to see their kids, or attending graduation, this hotel is walking distance to just about everything on the campus.
One feature about the hotel which was especially interesting… this is home to the University of Delaware’s school of Hotel, Restaurant & Institutional Management, and they use a lot of college students behind the front desk, working in the restaurant and bar, and even cleaning the rooms. This was one of the friendliest and most-​courteous staffs that I’ve ever met in all of my travels.
As with all Marriott’s, the Courtyard was very spacious and a terrific place for business travelers. The rooms are large with plenty of work space and extra electrical outlets. Everything is super clean, and I appreciated the mini-​fridge in the room. The beds are just fabulous, and it’s easy to get in a solid eight hours after a long day of meetings.
The have an on-​site restaurant along with a full bar, and plenty of tables for small groups to sit and chat or watch the big-​screen TVs. They also have a small marketplace area where you can buy water, sodas, juices, and snacks.

I live in Newark so I tend to visit the Courtyard for a beverage or food. The service is always tremendous & the staff is phenomenal. Maybe one day I’ll stay just for the heck of it even though I could walk home…

I absolutely love this place!!! The staff is so friendly that it’s borderline ridiculous. They will greet you, answer your questions, and bid you farewell with courtesy that is becoming a lost art these days.
Since the hotel is right on campus, my friend and I were able to walk right down to Main Street and the Green within 10 minutes or so. If you are unable to walk, there is a hotel shuttle available upon request.
The rooms are clean, spacious, and well-​designed. There is a separate sink outside of the bathroom, which is not common in hotels that I’ve been in. The TV has just an ok signal and no HD but that’s hardly a huge problem.
The best thing about this room is the refrigerator, which keeps everything ice cold and refreshing. If I had to make one complaint about the place, it is that they do not have soda machines on each floor (only ice). The reason for this is that they want you to purchase 20 oz sodas downstairs for upwards of $ 2.50-$ 3.00, which is very high if you can easily drink two or more a day. To solve this issue, my friend and I just packed our own cans and bottles for our stay and I recommend you all do the same.
There is a bistro downstairs that serves a breakfast buffet on the weekends for $ 12.95. It has standard scrambled eggs, cereal, omelettes, fruit, and danishes. The belgian waffle a guy freshly made for me tasted stale (?). Overall, it’s not bad for the convenience it provides.
If you want to eat outside, there is a beautiful porch with shaded tables and a soothing water fountain. My friend and I easily spent a couple of hours out there one night just talking and enjoying the weather.
Lastly, on our final day, we wanted to go down to the campus again to see some buildings but we were concerned about coming back to the hotel in time for the 12pm checkout. To avoid being late for this, we asked the lady at the front desk (I wish I remembered her name because she was an absolute sweetheart) if we could check out at 10am and leave our luggage there until later in the afternoon to pick it up when it was time to leave for the train station.
If my relatives come to town to visit me and there isn’t room in my apartment, they will no doubt come here.

The hotel delivers with great service, friendly staff, fair prices, a nice lobby bar and restaurant. The rooms are very nice. the beds are comfortable also. We stay here each time we visit our daughter in UD. In our opinion, it is the best hotel in Newark. Reserve your room well in advance as it fills up quickly.

After a half hour of checking in here, I wanted to come in and write a great review. Even a few days later, I still feel as though I need to tell everyone of our extremely satisfying experience.
We stayed at this hotel as a part of a wedding weekend. There were two weddings there that weekend, and the hotel had sold out. We arrived directly from the airport, with about 2 hours to get ready, and a hope to check in early.
Absolutely no problem with early check in, and they had everyone we knew from the wedding staying on the same floor. It was great to step out the door and see others heading down to the shuttle wearing the same themed garb for the wedding. The front desk was extremely nice, and efficient, had both rooms checked in within 5 minutes, explaining to us about the amenities of the hotel while doing the paperwork because they knew we were in a hurry.
The room was beautiful, and we weren’t in it ten minutes when they called to see if we liked our room, and to tell us how to contact them if we needed anything to help us get ready. Love!
They were very sweet, even leaving the pool open for the wedding party past closing time, and continually making coffee throughout the night because the lobby area was full of groups from both weddings.
The business center was set back from the lobby, so I didn’t even see it at first, but was able to check in for my flight and print my boarding passes to make my trip to the airport quite simple in the morning.
Parking was easy and free, and even with a sold out hotel there was still space.
I didn’t go perfect review only because the alarm clock in the hotel was extremely outdated (the radio didn’t work, and it wasn’t one of those cool ones you could plug the mp3 player in to) and the shuttle between the hotel and wedding, which was provided by the hotel, was understaffed, and took half the night to get everyone back because of the two weddings.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to this college for any purpose, hands down.

I booked two rooms for $ 75 a night on Priceline for a business trip. I thought it was the Courtyard right by the Christiana Mall, but it turned out there are two in Newark, DE. Luckily it was close enough to not worry about. It was an amazing value for the hotel. The rooms were large and clean and it is close to the downtown area. There is a pool/​hot tub open till 10 pm and a small fitness room with all the basics. The only thing I was disappointed with was there was no free breakfast (they did have free coffee though in the rooms and in the lobby).

I stayed at the hotel while attending an academic conference. It was a great location for folks at the conference, since it’s next to the University of Delaware’s conference center.
Service was hyper-​friendly and attentive, perhaps because the university uses the hotel as a training site for students in their hospitality program. What I appreciated were the little things: cookies and coffee at the front desk, free wifi in the lobby and ethernet in the room (both by the desk and bed; cables provided), and a well-​stocked snack center with everything from fresh salads to ice cream that was available 24hrs.
The lobby was a comfy place to hang out, with a fireplace, plasma TV, and a friendly barkeep for drinks. The rooms were comfortable, not luxurious, but well-​sized, comfortable bed, and good working space – maybe not the ideal for a vacation destination, but it fit the bill perfectly for a conference or business trip.

I’ve had great experiences with Marriott hotels in the past. Even in those times that they messed something up, they would make things right, one way or another. Somehow, this Courtyard by Marriott didn’t get the memo that they were a Marriott hotel and thus should live up to the name. Spending a weekend in Newark for a regional fraternity conference, I had a relatively pleasant experience upon arriving. The Otis Spunkmeyer cookies at the check-​in counter were great.
The trouble started sometime after midnight when many people in my group were coming back to the room to pick up some things and leave, as they were not spending the night at the hotel. At the same time, guests in some of the other rooms were holding rambunctious parties in their rooms and people were going through the halls, being extremely loud. The people in my group weren’t part of this; in fact, everybody in my room was quietly getting ready for bed. For some reason, hotel management decided we were the ones causing trouble, and we received a call from the hotel manager telling us that they had called the police on us. Just like that. No first warning, no attempt at mediation or investigation by hotel staff. They had seen people coming into our room to pick up their things to leave and assumed that we were hosting some massive party in our room. When I went to the front desk to explain the situation to the hotel manager, the desk clerks and the manager gave flippant replies and turned their backs on me. It was the rudest group of hoteliers I had ever encountered. The police arrived shortly thereafter, and demanded to see everyone in our dim, whisper-​quiet suite. Half of us were in pajamas. After being lecturing at us and threatening to throw us out if we weren’t quiet, they left. We were simply too tired to protest that we had not done what they claimed.
Beyond that, the rest of my stay in the hotel was uneventful. The staff was neither friendly nor outright hostile, in any case. They certainly did not seem like the professionals I have come to expect at Marriott. On the day of our departure, housekeeping knocked on our door quite early in the morning, which seemed out of the ordinary. Also, continental breakfast is apparently not included with the room. Hopefully things improve by the next time I have to go up there.
