Let me start by saying that I am not usually one to leave reviews but in this case I think it is necessary. Myself and a couple of friends decided to treat ourselves to sushi on new years eve since we all had to get up early the next morning and could not party the night away. We have all been to this establishment in the past and have never had a bad experience until now. We arrived and were seated quickly but were told that they were a little busy with catering and take out orders so it may be a longer wait than normal. The wait to be served did not seem that long and we able to place our order in a reasonable amount of time. Everything was going fine, we were getting our tea and drinks and appetizers as expected but once we got some of our entrees we noticed that one of our orders was the wrong item. When we told the server what had happened she started to argue with us that this is what we ordered and it was not her fault. We politely told her that there must have been a miscommunication and it was not what we ordered and she continued to insist that we got the right item. We could not understand why she was arguing and making us feel as if we had done something wrong. What really was the kicker is that as she took the item back she continued to give us bad looks and we could see and hear her making a fuss about it to her coworkers so much that we were really feeling uncomfortable and one of us had to go and say something to them. At this point we just decided to finish what we had and leave. This restaurant not only lost out on revenue for tonight since we most likely would have spent double what we ended up paying but also lost out on our future business. Customer service is important! No matter if you food is good, if your servers are rude to your guests, you will lose business.

OK, so I am on this sushi craze and have been trying a lot of sushi restaurants all over the bay area. I placed an order of the Philly roll to go. The lady on the phone seemed nice and helped me with my questions. The roll came with salmon, avocado and cream cheese. I got the soy paper instead of seaweed which I normally do since I don’t like the ‘fishy’ taste of seaweed. The place itself is nice, nothing fancy. The roll was disappointing though, the salmon was super fishy. Will pass, too many other better options in the area.

Kind of a nothingroll. Not bad enough to be offensive, not good enough to go out of your way for. There are two other Sushi joints within a rock throw, either of them is a better choice.

We tried this place for the first time Saturday evening. I nearly gagged when I tried the lion king roll that I ordered. Didn’t touch anything else. When we got the bill, it was $ 97 which included 18% gratuity. I told the waitress to either deduct my order or the gratuity but should actually remove both since I didn’t touch my order after the first bite. They deducted the 18% gratuity. Within a half hour of leaving, my 7 year old son threw up. And continued to throw up and complain of stomach pains. He is now in the ER with my husband. DONOTEATHERE.

We cannot rave enough about this place! We have been going here for years with our young kids, family and friends. The ladies are amazing and are always engaging the kids. They take all of our special requests and make us feel like family. The sushi is good too, and reasonably priced.

***UPDATE/MUST READ*** I have to update my review to this place after my incident last Sat(9÷26÷15) I still cannot get over how my friend and I were treated by the ownder of Kioku. Let me first give you some background. My sisters, brother-in-law and friends all come here about 3x a week on average and spend a lot of money at this place and have for YEARS. Last Sat my girlfriend and I went in to have lunch and the place was empty. I mean literally one person was leaving as we entered. We saw all the normal waitresses and sushi chefs we always see. For some reason I felt like venturing out that day and ordered a roll I never ate before along with a few other items. Our order comes and my sushi roll was so spicy it was inedible. Mind you, this comes from someone who asks for a side of fresh peppers(jalapenos/serranos) on the side, every time. I literally add a slice of a pepper on each sushi piece I eat. And they even know this because the waitresses bring it for me without me even asking. So I tell the waitress how spicy the roll is and how I cannot eat it. She first gives me a blank stare for a few minutes and me and my friend look at each other like okay?! Am I going to get a response or nah? So then she asks if I want something else, I said yes and I ordered another roll. Roll comes, it’s fine, one I’ve had before and then shortly after the check comes WITH the inedible roll on the bill($ 14.) I tell the waitress, «I think you forgot to take the other roll off.» And she says, «No, we don’t take roll off.» I said who’s the manager? She points at a sushi chef that I see all the time and says he’s the owner. I walk over to him and say, «Hey, you remember me right? I’m here 2−3x a week and the roll I ordered was so spicy that I couldn’t eat it and you won’t take it off the bill?» He literally IGNORESME, looks at his piece of chicken in his chop sticks, bites into it and say, «Mmmmmm.» And I’m just standing there like an idiot. And everyone in the restaurant, all the staff and my friend are looking at me and him like, Ummmmmmm, what’s going to happen next!?” And I asked him, are you not going to respond to me? And he doesn’t. So then I go back to my table and tell the waitress she has 2 options. Remove the roll and get the bill paid or don’t remove it and you won’t have anything and I will leave. So she says, «Let me talk to owner.» Then she comes back and has it removed. We pay the bill and I walk over to him and tell him how horrible his customer service is and how disrespectful he is and that’s why his place is empty while Satomi(a bomb ass sushi spot in Fremont) has a line out the door. He starts to insult me by speaking Spanish and saying, «Adiós! I’m trying to enjoy my lunch! Go! Leave! Good bye señorita!» My best friend who was with me and who is Mexican was EXTREMELY insulted because she felt like so he’s saying Mexican’s don’t pay bills? We left in complete shock. I can’t believe a restaurant I went to for years and have given so much of my hard earned money to would treat ANY customer like that. I even had a piece of hair in my rice the week before and I didn’t complain and another time there was a dead fly at the bottom of our edamame bowl and we showed that to the waitress and all she did was say sorry. But to insult us like this and not remove a $ 14 charge is beyond shocking to me. We will clearly never return.

There’s quite a lot of sushi places in the area. This one just happened to be close by and without a wait for a table during a weekday lunch. The service here is very weird. The waitress seemed disoriented and confused most of the time. She was also very quiet and couldn’t get our attention very well. You get some complimentary edamame while you wait for your food. Our group ordered a bunch of sushi rolls and a few got rice plates and bento boxes. The sushi was average. Some of the pieces would fall apart when you picked them up. Raw fish was ok — not the freshest but didn’t get anyone sick. Bento boxes were a good deal and had a lot of food in them.

Came to this spot before & got the chicken teriyaki bento box for lunch time & I enjoyed it total price came to be 13 $ not bad right ? Came back with my boyfriend & we didn’t include tip b/c service was great super slow last only gave us our food never checked back up. So to us that’s not good service. Before we left the lady asked us in a super rude way«No tip?!» Like wow so rude Even more reason no not get a tip. Came here for dinner with my dad got the same thing 2 bento boxes & the price came out to be 59 $ ! Like whoa ?! That much for a bento? I just figured it could’ve been a mistake. Decided to give it another try so this time came back with my family of 4. We only got 3 bento boxes & a plate of super CA Rolls. First off the ladies here can be so RUDE! They took soooo long to bring out our food as well & it wasn’t even busy. THEN bill came out to 95 $ ! There is no way a bento is that much? I’ve came here before always got the same thing & it was only 13 $ ! Our receipt doesn’t even show the breakdown of what we got so how do I know they aren’t charging us extra for something ?! &&& to make it worse the lady put in her own TIPONTHEBILLOF13 $ WITHOUTOURCONSENT !!! Just decided to charge us that much. So I went up to her & asked her why she did that. & she seemed confused & was like if it’s more than 5 people we put in our own tip ! BUT the 5th person was my little brother who did NOT eat anything ! Like what kind of shit is that ?! This ladies here are sneaky that’s is not ok to do. Like you could’ve told us before if we knew we wouldn’t have ate here. After that bad experience I’m not going back such a ripoff way to pricy for the food they serve not worth it at all. I don’t recommend coming here & if you do be alert on what they charge you for & don’t let them get away with it.

This is my family’s go to sushi spot in the neighborhood. We go here for almost every special occasion celebration like graduations and birthdays. We like this place because it’s close by, the food is good, the service is speedy, and it’s a no non-sense kind of place. I like how they have private rooms for bigger groups. You can also choose to sit at the sushi bar or traditional tables. There’s options for different types of seating. As far as food, they have sushi, bento boxes, rolls. You name it! Everything here is pretty much good. I haven’t had anything that I absolutely hated.

Came here with colleagues weeks ago for lunch. Heard this restaurant has been surviving in this neighbor for a long time, comparing to other stores. I can tell why after trying this. Pretty good value for lunch and service is fair. For business workers, it’s a good place to have a OK meal with fair price at lunch time. However, I don’t think I would come for dinner since its not worthy it. Will still come back if someone invite me. Btw, people keep telling me there is a newly opened conveyor belt sushi place nearby with $ 1.5 per plate. Will give it a try next time.

My wife found plastic in her udon. Unfortunately it was after a few scoops and shared with the kids. Possibly pre made food packed elsewhere in a plastic bag and throw into some water to serve. Totally unacceptable. Returned. Offered another udon — passed on that. How do you mess up anything teriyaki? The beef and tonkatsu looked nuked. Thin cuts and very very dry. Again seems pre-made. Do I need to say more? Perhaps their sushi is better but I won’t be coming back to find out. Plus, Mioki sushi down the road is 10000% better.

I really hate to write bad reviews about places but this restaurant is awful. I didn’t expect it to be great. But I also didn’t expect to find plastic in my udon either. The food is mediocre at best. Wouldn’t recommend or return again.

Kioku Sushi? Roughly translates to dream sushi. No idea what the meaning is there, but Kioku offers up some pretty decent eats. Being honest, it’s super generic. Like, run of the mill, you know what you’re walking into here kind of sushi joint. Poki roll was pretty normal. Also got the nemo roll since Unilocal suggested it, and this was just okay. It’s just a slightly cooked California roll with crawdads on top. Tasted like the ocean. A little pricey to be honest, which is why this spot isn’t getting a higher rating. There’s just too much competition in the east bay when it comes to sushi of all things. Might be back since it’s a reliable spot, but it’s not somewhere I’m gonna go out of my way for.

I am not going to lie, and I hate to repeat what other Unilocalers are saying about this place. My only major thing about this place is the price. It’s a little to high to tell you the truth. Don’t get me wrong, the fish here is very fresh and the sushi is delicious. My go to roll here is the Washington and the Poki roll. I like the Washington because of the lemon on top. It’s very similar to the 49er roll but I like the ingredients in the Washington. The poki roll is a no brainer because I love the seaweed salad on top. Lastly, I would recommend the tiger eye. It’s an interesting one. I’ll let you decide whether it’s good or not. I personally liked it and I completely went on a whim on it. This place is convenient for me because I work right across the street. So I definitely feel like a winner when I want sushi after work. Cheers!

This is our go-to sushi place now that Umi Sushi Boat has closed it’s doors after over 15 years of business. We actually came here because of Jin. He was the head sushi chef at Umi and now he is here. There are a wide variety of rolls for everyone. Lots of selection! They also have an extensive menu, including udon and large roll orders(the boats).

I have gone to MANY Japanese joints but all the times I have gone here, there was nothing special like my last lunch meal here. My sushi roll(Bay Bridge) had no flavor! My flavor was in the soy sauce and wasabi… The miso soup is good though! ;p The place was nice and located in a good shopping area but I am not sure if I would recommend this place as their are better and better fish quality…
