University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

Please do not ever step foot in the hospital. Go elsewhere. The level of service is not what you would expect from a University hospital. The worse is their billing practices. They add medical services to the bill that were never provided. On top of that when you try to contact their customer service to resolve the discrepancy on the bill, they never ever address your complaints. I sent various letters to them that were certified. For 8 months, they never respond to my complaints. When i call them they refuse to acknowledge having received the letters. I ended up taking them to court. In my opinion this is the worse hospital EVER.
Remember, you have been warned!

A close friend came here for oncological surgery and has been in their care for a week. I can only speak of certain aspects of the hospital:
–Cleanliness: Coming from Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth, this is a step down, but for cleanliness UMDNJ is a ⁷⁄₁₀. It’s an older facility so you can tell that certain things are worn down and could be replaced, but there are always janitors/​cleaning people roaming the halls and checking every room to take trash, empty catheters, clean toilets, etc. So that’s good.
–Staff: ⁴⁄₁₀. The nurses, security, and other staff people are really a hit or miss. Some are sweet and personable, others don’t crack a smile the entire time you’re there. Some are rude, some are compassionate. It just depends who you get. Dr. Chokshi was very helpful and surprisingly available throughout the entire surgery process, which was wonderful.
–Competence: ⁴⁄₁₀. This IS a university hospital, so sometimes the less important details (vitals, etc) are handled by students. And sometimes, the students have no idea what they are doing. For the most part, though, the nurses are competent in taking care of you and getting what you need. Be warned, though – they take FOREVER. There are about 7 million patients in UMDNJ so if you ask for something, be prepared to wait a considerable amount of time before they come in and give it to you – even your meds.
–Location: ³⁄₁₀. Heart of Newark – a little shady. The areas surrounding the hospital are worse than where the hospital actually is, so I never feel endangered or anything. But just know you’re not going to be in a suburb, or even in Elizabeth.
Also, UMDNJ is ginormous and you will get lost. For a good point of reference, enter into the hospital across the street from the IHOP on Bergen. That will get you almost directly into the Main Entrance. To the right of the Main Entrance is the Emergency Room, and to the left is the Dentistry School. Good luck!

RUNNNNN!!! Don’t you dare let anyone at this place touch your mouth! It’s one big nightmare and when they screw up theres noone to blame… Beth Israel dentistry is MUCH BETTER I repeat RUNN!!!

July 2008 i made a fatal mistake going to UMD Dental School. I would give this dump 0 stars. They should not be allowed to do what they do. Getting unprofessional heath care from inexperienced students and doctors should be punishable by law. You don’t want to deal with someone who has no experience, motivation, or desire to help you. The only reason to admit customers is to practice on them. As a result, two years later i lost time and money and still can’t get treatment. Nobody else outside of school wants to take my case because of what they did on me at UMD. If you want cheap, don’t get the wrong idea — they are not. If you want an honest opinion — not at UMD dental school, not that the same faculty are much better in a private office. If you discover a problem — head straight for Federal court. There’s nobody to complain to. Peers will not go against peers. Clinical affairs is useless, can’t complain to the dean or school president.
If i could do it over again i wouldn’t go to this dump if it was the last place on earth that could provide dental treatment. Avoid UMD dental school! They are bureaucrats and liars. BEWARE!!!
