Vincent R. Casciano Memorial Bridge

A very normal passageway. Not a tourist attraction like the Brooklyn Bridge. Cars only. Lots of potholes. I expected more from New Jersey… expect a very bumpy trip! Pro: there’s no traffic!

That was Vinny. If you knew him, you knew him. You know? Or Vinny Rock-​Bottom. That’s what the R stood for. Don’t blame me. Blame the community. They chose his name. Animals and rascals. Whippersnappers and goobers. They were the ones who branded him with this Scarlet initial. Some said you can’t hyphenate a middle name. Vince proved those rascals wrong. Doin’ just fine on my end. You?

This was formerly known as the Newark Bay Bridge. Whenever I have to go to Bayonne, Liberty State Park, Jersey City, or Lower Manhattan, then I have to utilize the TPK-​EXT, which includes this bridge.
Whenever there are no traffic-​related issues, then it’s a smooth ride (thus why the extra star). But when there are issues (accidents, construction), then it’s a total nightmare.
But we have to do what we must in order to reach those areas.

2 lanes for Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken AND New York City? Well I wasn’t sure they had the word ‘clusterfuck’ in the dictionary until earlier today when I checked and sure enough a picture of the Vincent R. Casciano Memorial Bridge right next to it.
I almost feel bad for ol’ Vinnie because it would seem that these people are trashing his legacy with this miserable excuse for a bridge. However upon investigating the matter further one would find that Mr. Casciano was in fact the one fighting for this bridge to be built (

Yes, what seems like a great idea in 1954 by all accounts probably worked (hey their 60 year anniversary is right around the corner!!). But we as Americans knew that the sky was the limit in terms of suburban expansion and should have planned far ahead for all the traffic cycling around this area. But hey, if there’s one thing NJ is great at its poor planning, poorer execution, and blatant corruption.

It seems like this bridge has been in a constant state of heavy repairs over the past decade. You will hardly ever find it without some sort of construction activity going on. During peak hours, it bottlenecks all the Holland Tunnel traffic into two lanes with no escape. It’s a shame that with all the money being dumped into the Pulaski Bridge project, the state couldn’t help make using this bridge during rush hour a little more efficient during a time when we will probably need it the most.

It’s disaster, the bridge from Hell. NJ Turnpike has been fixing it since it was built in 1956. The men call it their overtime bridge in the pubs. Not funny. They will never finish this Bridge. I’ve lived in Bayonne for 20+ yrs and they are still «Fixin» it. NJ Turnpike should be ashamed to charge to use it, but then again they don’t care. Laughing all the way to the bank. Avoid it if at all possible…

This bridge runs between Newark (exit 14 on the New Jersey Turnpike) and Bayonne (exit 14a). The bridge is part of the Turnpike Extension that runs from Newark to Jersey City.
During the morning rush, the bridge is usually backed up in the eastbound direction. The exit 14 toll plaza gets backed up as well as the turnpike north and south near exit 14. On the Newark side of the bridge, at least 6 lanes merge into 2 bridge lanes east. It’s usually a disaster.
There are also rush hour back– ups caused from traffic exiting at 14a going into Bayonne.
There has been construction on this bridge for some time. I’m not sure if the work being done will improve traffic. The bridge needs more lanes.

Ok so for pass year this bridge has been going under heavy construction. I believe they’re raising it. Problem is this is one of three ways out of Bayonne and the cheapest and fastest but boy does it get jammed up with traffic. Hopefully once they have finished construction things will run better. The Newark Bay Bridge (officially named the Vincent R. Casciano Memorial Bridge) is a steel through arch bridge[1] that is continuous across three spans. It crosses Newark Bay and connects the cities of Newark and Bayonne in New Jersey. It was completed April 4, 1956 as part of the New Jersey Turnpike’s Newark Bay (Hudson County) Extension, with a ribbon-​cutting ceremony led by Governor of New Jersey Robert B. Meyner.[2]
The main span is 1,270 feet (390 m), with a 135-​foot (41 m) clearance over water to allow marine access to Port Newark. The Vincent R. Casciano Memorial Bridge is similar in length and design to the Francis Scott Key Bridge at Baltimore’s Outer Harbor. It runs parallel to the earlier built Lehigh Valley Terminal Railway’s Upper Bay Bridge.
This bridge is also known as «The Turnpike Bridge» and «The Turnpike Extension Bridge». It carries traffic on a toll regulated section of Interstate 78 along the New Jersey Turnpike to interchanges 14 through 14A. It provides access from the New Jersey Turnpike’s main roadway to Hudson County, New Jersey and the Holland Tunnel. The turnpike route creates the border between Bayonne and Jersey City and then runs northward along Port Jersey, Liberty State Park, and Downtown Jersey City. Hoboken is just north of the entrance to Holland Tunnel which continues to Lower Manhattan in New York City.
