Gram’s Homemade Ice Cream

They not only have the best ice cream they also have specials. Blueberry Cheesecake was Awesome.

Why do they close so soon in the season, especially with the October Festival this month ??? Info states it’s open do I got excited and drove there all the while drooling thinking of what flavor to get. Got there and to my deep disappointment the sign said «CLOSED FOR THE SEASON»

Amazing High Quality Ice Cream!
My family and I have visited Gram’s Ice Cream dozens of times over the past several years and always make it a point to stop in for what truly is the «BEST ICE CREAM IN THE NORTHEAST! Super-​Friendly Staff and Meticulously Clean Store coupled with of course AMAZING QUALITY ICE CREAM!
If you are in Newburyport I highly recommend trying out their Ice Cream… you’ll be glad you did!

Grams is one of the best ice-​cream shops in the world! It compares favorably with gelato I have had in Italy. Can’t wait to have more ice cream on my next visit to Newburyport.

I went to GRAMS last night for the first time and got a Brownie Sundae… it was to die for! the Brownie is homemade and delicious. Oh and it was HUGE!!! it was the best ice cream, best brownie, best everything I have ever had. I cant wait to go back!

Nice selection of flavors and friendly people working there.
For those that want, they do have a selection of frozen yogurt and other «fat free» offerings.
However, if I am going to ingest the calories, I am going for the good stuff!
In the end, its a nice local small business that provides a high quality product that really tastes good.

There’s something about small, cozy ice cream shops in a nautical town that define what is actually perfect about a New England summer. Froyo shops, beware.
Homemade ice cream is hard to come by in the city, unless I head over to Whole Foods and drop $ 3million on a gallon of organic vanilla ice cream. No thanks, I WANT THE FULL FATTY STUFF.
So many different flavors to indulge in, the first time I’ve ever had raspberry chip (black raspberry seems to hog the spotlight). Will highly consider taking the commuter rail out to visit this place more often!

Nice homemade ice cream flavors. I got the Boston Strong flavor which was a combination of several chocolates. Very very good and I highly recommend!

The only criticism I can offer is that they are currently closed for the season. I can hardly wait for them to re-​open. We went out to eat the last night they were open for the season and stopped in for dessert. The ice cream is simply wonderful. Creamy, flavorful, rich, smooth — I’m already counting the days until they re-​open. Hubby loves pistachio and I absolutely adore the vanilla which tastes like natural vanilla. I appreciate that they let you taste some flavors before choosing — the birthday cake was a bit too sweet for me, but the vanilla is perfection in a cone.

Yes, we actually decided Gram’s was our destination last weekend, 40 miles each way. Sure, Newburyport is an amazingly New Englandish, quaint town but Gram’s needs to be included in each and every visit, especially when the temperatures are above 75 degrees. I don’t know the best ice cream shops on Cape Ann so NBP will always win out because this place is there which we happened to stumble into on a 100 degree, summer day.
The ONLY complaint is that it is redick, tiny. I’m never a fan of lines but willing to wait when a product is this good and then can easily get 10 – 15 people long. The A/​C blows super cold so it’s also nice to go from 100 to 68 degrees in mere seconds. Tip, if you’re in a group, grab a table BEHIND where the lines form and then have one person order while the others have a seat at one of the scant tables.
We’ve had lime rickeys, blueberry cheesecake frappes and of course, waffle cones with birthday cake flavor. EVERYTHING has been top notch, not a single disappointment to be found. The staff of young girls are never rude and pretty talkative, letting you try as many flavors as you want before making a final decision. I love when teenagers actually care about their jobs and these seem to, leaving the overall customer experience that much better.
Run, don’t walk to Gram’s the next time you’re in town… get dessert after the Grog the Mexican place right next door.

Let this be my will:
When I die from overdosing from Gram’s Ice Cream, I’d like to be buried with a vat of Gram’s birthday cake ice cream.
I’m dead serious.

Love their chocolate monkey shakes! Make it a point to come here if we’re in the area and of course ganesh imports too.

Before the new ownership this summer I was a die-​hard Gram’s fan. It would have definitely gotten 5 stars. Unfortunately the new ownership has done away with the homemade hot fudge, sauces, and whipped cream. Now you get Reddiwhip, bad hot fudge and unfriendly service. It makes me really sad. Gone is the cute farm mural on the wall, gone are the sweet girls who would ring you up and remember your favorite order. Gone is a great Newburyport classic.

Gram’s is just what you need after a day at the beach. Really tasty and satisfying, but a fair warning for ice cream headache… the portions are GINORMOUS!

How could I not go to a place called Gram’s?
It was excellent. No surprise there!

I worked at Gram’s all through high school in the late 90s and I’m shocked I didn’t gain 15 pounds! Thank goodness for a 16 year old’s metabolism. Started by Helen and Steve Rankin, the couple wanted a way to showcase all of Helen’s grandmother’s amazing desserts. In particular, she had this amazing chocolate sauce recipe they wanted to showcase, and for years they did it well.
Gram’s used to have everything from homemade ice cream, chocolate sauce, and pies/​cakes to sandwiches and soups. I think they only do ice cream now, and the place is in dire need of renovations since my days of working there, but despite those setbacks, the ice cream is still good.
Pretty much every flavor has a story behind it (Bill’s birthday cake is named after their friend Bill, who Helen baked a cake for, messed up, and proceeded to put in a batch of ice cream; Plum Island Turtle got its namesake from the beach down the road, Merrimack Mud is along the same lines and is named after the river on which NBPT rests), and every recipe is thought out with care. They have flavors for all ages at Gram’s: rum raisin for the grandparents, and crazy birthday cake for the kids. Plus depending on what is in season, they have seasonal flavors like peach, which are always super delicious.
There is a reason worker’s t-​shirts say «I eat dessert first.» That is what Helen’s grandmother used to say and do. Good mantra if I do say so myself!

I live in California now, but sometimes I dream about a Dusty Spoon with Gram’s homemade hot fudge. If you are a lover of malt, this sundae is for you. Unfortunately, my daughters will have to miss out on our old Newburyport neighborhood’s tradition of working at Gram’s in high school.

For homemade ice cream stores, Gram’s is near the top. I won’t echo the other reviewers.
But what gives this 4 out of 5 stars is they close before Christmas and re-​open around Easter. Now, I was raised in south suburban Boston in an area where if there was a snowstorm, we would pile into the family car and drive to a ice cream store because we knew it’d be open and busy. Why can’t Gram’s be open in the winter? Where else to buy ice cream when it’s 20 degrees out?

Love love love Gram’s. The ice cream is so tasty, and they have just as many flavors of fat free frozen yogurt too! I always get the yogurt with all the oreo pieces and mixed nuts (for real, cashews and almonds and filberts and peanuts!) to totally negate the fat free-​ness of the yogurt.
And all the girls behind the counter have to wear these silly pink tees that say «I eat dessert first» or something along those lines. Those poor ladies!
