Great food, attentive service, a warm inviting atmosphere that included a large stone fireplace. The delicious dessert took it over the top, a goat cheese– cheese cake and a chocolate torte!

The Inn and restaurant were amazing. The rooms are beautiful and the food was delicious. The service was great and I was especially impressed by Asher who was in charge of the inn. Not only was he very helpful and friendly, the restaurant was filled with regulars and he knew all of them! It is small enough to have a local, unique experience but with the feel of a high end hotel. I would highly recommend the inn for a weekend getaway or a longer stay as I was definitely not ready to leave!

My family and I celebrated my birthday at the Artisan Restaurant at Four Columns this past weekend. From the starter soups, to our main dishes and desserts the entire meal was absolutely delicious! The ambiance, with the crackling fire and tasteful décor was sure to please — we definitely want to venture back over the summer to sit outside in the fresh air. I would recommend giving Artisan Restaurant a try!
The only reason I did not give a 5 stars is because of service. Our waitress was very sweet, but a little forgetful. She offered us more bread and forgot it (oh well) and we wanted to take leftovers to go, but she forgot to bring them too — we didn’t realize until we were five minutes into our ride home.

Stopped here on the way home from skiing with a large group of friends. Service was excellent and food was tasty. A relaxing way to end our trip.

A wonderful stay. Comfortable, romantic, fabulous staff. Can’t wait to return.

My fiancé treated me to a winter weekend away at the Four Columns and I hope to become weekend regulars! Great location for ski bunnies 35 minutes from Stratton, and a beautiful, historic inn I later found out my parents had visited when they were first married! However, the place has been newly updated and it shows: in the rooms (spacious, gracious, and not stuffy); in the food (unpretentious and expertly done; the chicken mousse liver is amazing and the hand-​cut chittarra pasta one of the best I’ve ever had, and that is from a NYC-​bred carb loader); in the service (shout to Asher and Nick, especially, who kept our wine glasses full and even sat down for a game of Storymatic); and even in the spa, which elevates the experience from country-​inn-​cozy to full-​on-​escape. Will be returning asap.

My husband and I just returned from a few days at the Four Columns and had the most wonderful and relaxing weekend. The Inn itself is gorgeous and very cozy. The staff is super friendly and truly attended to our every need — whether it be making sure we were aware that the Tavern and Restaurant was closed on Mondays and giving us other dinner recommendations in the area, to checking in on whether or not we needed any type of amenity for our dog that we were able to bring with us with no hassle whatsoever. We ate dinner at the restaurant and tavern on-​site two nights in a row and had wonderful meals with truly delicious food. The breakfast that is included is more than amazing and included all ingredients local to the area. Asher also went out of his way to make sure there was a massage therapist for me that specialized in prenatal massages (and it was fantastic!) and also arranged a pre-​paid lift ticket for my husband to ski at Stratton. The town itself is very quiet, but there are a ton of activities (outdoor or indoor) in the surrounding areas that are an easy drive. I highly, highly recommend a stay here for anyone looking for great service, good food and a relaxing environment.

Food was good enough, but for the price not spectacular. The service in the restaurant was woefully inadequate: inattentive waiter, luke warm appetizers, had to go into the kitchen to get bread after waiting for 35 minutes for some to appear, had to remind the waitress three times that I had ordered a martini (it finally came after I was half way through my entrée), no champagne glasses, dessert took forever to arrive, and the list goes on. The entire evening had an amateurish feeling to it.

Warning.
We have a family member with a severe nut allergy. It’s the first thing we tell wait staff at restaurants and we literally go years without a problem.
At our dinner at The Artisan Restaurant, there were three separate errors, two of which put our family member at risk. The third error resulted in an actual allergic reaction and we left as fast as we could to get home and start treatment. Its pretty painful to spend hundreds of dollars on dinner for a special occasion and end up spending the night ill.
If you or a member have similar issues, you have been warned.

Fabulous weekend At four columns inn. The place is lovely, grounds beautiful. We had huge room with large bathroom, great king bed and fireplace. The food in the restaurant is delicious, either the dining room or the pub. Great drinks also! Management is strong, and so friendly and helpful –they can’t do enough to please! The area has lots of great hiking, Brattleboro for shopping/​lunch, etc. we really enjoyed ourselves, only suggestion is to vary up the breakfast a bit!

We went for dinner last and found it to be good, but nothing out of the ordinary for a nice Vermont Country Inn.
The décor was stock VT Inn– wood planks, exposed beams, pictures of sheep. A large open space, so a bit noisy, but not bad.
A nice VT beer selection, though in bottles, not on tap. :(
For appetizers we tried the quail with apple which was tasty and the chicken liver mousse which was the best thing we had that evening. The mousse would have been better served with thin bread rather than the rustic type.
Rating the entrees. The hanger steak was tasty, but not out of the ordinary. The duck was nicely prepared and the kale side was quite delicious. The red shrimp and rice grits was a huge disappointment. Hardly any shrimp and they were the small ones, not what this dish calls for. It was mostly grits with a nice sauce, but for $ 26. I think not.
On the whole, a bit overpriced for the quality and quantity of food.

I believe we were one of the first guests to stay at the newly refurbished Inn and it is spectacular. We’ve been coming to Newfane for years, as my in-​laws live a short drive away, but with a growing family — the small guest room/​office wasn’t comfortable anymore. Now we’ve found our new spot.
The service was incredible and friendly… our kids decided at 9am, that they’d like to head out to the pool (65-​degrees out), and while there — one of the managers came out with a tray of lemonade for them. Try getting that at a massive conglomerate hotel up on the mountains.
Our room was completely renovated and decorated the way any great Inn should be in the mountains. Clean, bright, feels like home… period.
The food! Both nights spent at the Inn, which has a friendly little bar area with a nice selection of anything you’d like — including a good selection of local craft brews. From the pork chop to kid’s burgers, fresh salads and a table presentation you’d expect in New York City or San Francisco… a home run.
The best part… the people. This Inn is well staffed and not running on empty where 2 people are doing everything. So friendly and accommodating to all of our needs — we had such a great weekend that we just booked for Christmas week as well.
I’d hurry up and book if I were you… a few more weekends of reviews like this and you’ll never get in and you’ll be kicking yourself somewhere else.

The Artisan deserves 5 stars. The food was superb and such a variety to pick from. Service was excellent and the host, Asher made sure everything we ordered was to our liking including our wine selection. We have eaten in many places in VT but this was exceptional and since it was a wedding anniversary dinner, we wanted it to be special. The staff made it so.
We use to come to the restaurant at the Four Columns Inn many years ago when the famous Rene Chardin was the chef. He would be proud to know his legacy continues with the new Artisan.

I stayed at the beautifully remodeled Four Columns Inn and had a wonderful experience.
The rooms have all been refreshed. I stayed in the Maple Syrup room, which was comfortable, quiet and clean. Haven’t had such a good sleep in a long time. I don’t know if it was the peacefulness of Vermont or the soft sheets — either way fantastic!
I also had dinner at the Artisan restaurant, which was a delight. I started with the seafood chowder (with a nice touch of fennel) then the hanger steak. All were great and a real treat.
What made my stay were the pretty grounds and the wonderful staff. I felt at ease sitting in the Adirondack chairs, soaking in an unbeatable summer day on the lush grounds. The staff were professionals, friendly and knowledgable. Made my stay a true maple delight!

This is a spectacular spot for dinner! We ate in the tavern, in the bay window overlooking the pond and the grounds at sunset. It was Vermont-​picturesque!
The waiter, Bob, could not have been any friendlier or more attentive.
The food was par excellence!
I had a local VT beer, the Gazpacho, grilled Hangar Steak with steak fries and a mesclun salad, and ended with the rum chocolate pudding with ganache and a little bit of dry sherry.
Everything about this place and my experience earn five stars!

The Inn has just recently reopened, it’s completely renovated, immaculate and fresh.
The rooms are quiet, there’s a lot of attention focused on every detail-​beautiful art books in the common areas, calming color palette, luxurious and thoughtful touches were everywhere evident.
The gardens are perfectly manicured and the tranquil pool and creek are very alluring. This Inn is a little jewel box. I can’t wait to try it again once the restaurant is open!

I adore this place and it’s a venue that has centered around some pretty significant events in my life, yet it closed this past Spring and has been foreclosed upon.
Very, very sad.

This is a fantastic Inn that will help make your trip to Southeast Vermont truly relaxing. The Inn offers a variety of rooms ranging from simple and traditional to luxury suites with fireplaces. The owners and innkeeper were very friendly and helped make the stay even more special. I recommend trying the restaurant at the Inn as well. While it is one of the more expensive options in the area, the portions are generous and the dishes are well executed. If you want a great weekend getaway, book here!

First of all, the website is misleading.
It just didn’t look or feel like those photos at all.
It all seemed so much more modern and exciting on the website than the dated drabness that we experienced.
Second of all, I really don’t like writing negative reviews, especially to business owners who seem very nice. But it’s not right feeling misled and disappointed after paying such steep prices, and I really wouldn’t want other people to be let down like we were.
After staying at some pretty amazing Inns for around the same price, Four Columns fell really short in comparison.
For one of the cheaper, smaller rooms this may be a pretty sweet deal.
But if you’re going for a luxurious experience in one of the larger, more pricey suites then I would recommend going to a different Inn.
A lot of things were subpar.
We noticed the showers weren’t cleaned thoroughly at all.
There was a mysterious clump of hair in the shower upon our arrival that never was removed… ICK.
The toilet clogged a little too easily and they had an uncovered plunger looming in the corner… YIKES.
Some of their old furniture broke and it took them a day to just remove it, let alone replace it… UGH.
The town was cute but boring… YAWN.
They could use a little refurbishing and redecorating… it felt a little 1984 for us. The carpets were drabby and the wood floors in the room were scuffed up.
As for service, I give applauds to the man running the Inn. He was helpful with directions and overall very friendly.
Now for the restaurant, which is pretty much one of the only places to eat around the area. It was insanely expensive. And for that price you should get AMAZING service. The service and the food wasn’t much to write home about. At least not for that price.
Now for some good news:
–Beautiful, lush property
–Delicious breakfast [especially the homemade granola]
–The man running the Inn
What Im trying to say is:
I recommend going up North instead of staying in this sleepy town. And if you can afford prices like this, do yourself a favor and stay at a different Inn.
Bottom line is it just wasn’t worth it.
I think we would have been happier staying a funkier, cheaper motel where we knew what we’d be getting for our money.
