A colleague and I stumbled into Newport Fresh while on business. We were looking for good sushi, and there was convenient parking available. We ordered several types of sushi, and the owner filled us in about the protein bowls. We wished we ordered one to try it, but we were very happy with the sushi. The owner was very nice and talked to us while we ate. Overall a good meal, and we will have to return on our next trip.

I come here for their protein bowl, which is just absolutely fantastic. I’ve been to culinary school, and have tried to deconstruct it and figure out how they do it, but I cannot… its just magic, that only they can create. The gentleman who runs and owns the business is always incredibly kind, and is a good business owner. I just walked in for another protein bowl and there was a customer who had ordered a bunch of food and was trying to pay with 6 different credit cards, none in her name. They business owner was telling her she couldn’t do that, and she was berating him, and just being a generally horrible person. I’m writing this because I know she will probably write a review calling him a bunch of names. But, hats off to the owner for good business practice, and for standing up to this just genuinely mean-hearted person who thought she was better than him and let him know it. Long live the protein bowl, and long live Newport Fresh!

I IMPLOREYOU… GOSOMEWHEREELSE! HORRIBLE customer service leaves just as HORRIBLE a taste in your mouth as the subpar, inauthentic, food. The owner rivals the ‘Soup Nazi’ from Seinfeld personality-wise; and this is where the similarities end. At least the Soup Nazi’s food is reported to be delicious; definetly NOT the case here. There is zero conceivable excuse for the ranting we encountered when trying to order food from this LUNATIC’S inconsistant, outdated, illogical menu. How this place stays in business with the unwarranted and DISPICABLE treatment of paying customers is beyond me. Heed my warning, unless of course, you enjoy abuse and have no taste buds.

The WORST service. I called to place an order to go, I wanted to add salmon on the top of a spicy tuna roll, the guy told me it was going to be a $ 15 dollar roll and it wasn’t worth it. He told me his own roll was not worth $ 15. Then he proceeded to insult me by telling me I wouldn’t understand and I just won’t be able to «get it» when I questioned his pricing, comparing the roll I requested to his Alaskan roll at $ 10.50. In the end he said«we don’t want to make that kind of roll» and quickly hung up on me… So rude.

PLEASEREADTHISBEFOREYOUAREDISAPPOINTED!!! The owner of this place was very rude and not deserve my money. So after being treated like shit, the was NOT good at all. If you are Japanese then you should know how to cook Japanese food this was a BIG disappointment and waste. You should be ashamed of yourself. Never again in life!!!

Love this place. The guy that owns it is very efficient and works so hard. The food is incredible. I always get the chicken and egg protien bowl, mild. It seems like a hole in the wall when you walk in but don’t be fooled. One of my absolute favorite places to eat in Orange County!

Sashimi bowl– spicy. Amazing! I get it weekly! It’s not on the menu but it’s a must order. It’s pricey like $ 14? But it’s really filling.

I was very skeptical when I walked in here because the restaurant itself did not appear well kept.(Ex– the trash can area was missing a trash can, the soda fountain was broken and overall it just felt kind of dirty) However, seeing the positive reviews from my fellow Unilocalers that although this is a Japanese sushi joint, they serve a awesome but random«Philly cheesesteak sandwich» I had to try one. Seriously, soo happy I did, too. I would even go as far as to recommend ordering two. The entire sandwich was on point. The only thing we did to make it even better was to add a dash of garlic salt which isn’t necessary we just tend to put it on everything. The only reason I am giving 3⁄5 stars is because it is semi concerning to me what the back of the restaurant may look like given the appearance of the front.

Excellent! Food is awesome! Protein bowls are my favorite, but the sushi is great and even the Philly cheese steaks are phenomenal! The owners are super nice people and food is always cooked fresh and ready quickly. Love this place and I bring all my friends here

Best sashimi bowl in the world!!! This place is a total whole in the wall but is famous among those who live in the area. You can order«not spicy», «medium spicy» or «spicy», it comes with tuna and salmon. Be careful, you will definitely get addicted! Also, be patient with Danny, he’s not always easy but he makes the best sashimi bowls in Orange County!

Best protein bowl on earth but never ever open at 11 which is what is labeled on the hours. Just leaves the door open for a nice tease.

RUDERUDERUDE!!! I just called to order over $ 100 worth of food for some coworkers and myself. First thing I try to order is a #78(strawberry banana smoothie) and the person taking my order immediately yells #78! WHATAREYOUTALKINGABOUT? I’m a little taken aback… so I respond, «Umm, the strawberry banana smoothie?» He yells«THATIS A TENYEAROLDMENU! WEDONTEVENSERVETHATANYMORE! Some random person posted our menu on Unilocal and that is not correct! Half of the things on the menu we do not even serve anymore!» W.T. Acutual. F. I then tell him, «Wow, well the thing is that I did not get your menu off of Unilocal,I got it off of your website.» He then yells that they have not had the time to change it and that he’s «tired of customers calling and arguing about what is on the menu.» I said«I am not arguing with you, I am just trying to order some food from your establishment! If you had your correct menu posted this would not be a problem» He then crudely said«we have enough regulars who know what is actually on the menu.» CLICK. What the hell kind of customer service is that?! I would never in my right mind give my money to a place who treats their existing or potential customers like complete sh*t!!! SCREWTHISPLACE!!!

This place has amazing protein bowls that my boyfriend and I love to get regularly! The owners are really nice and make everything all natural from scratch. Definitely a healthier option if you’re looking for quality food– especially after a workout. Would recommend this place to anyone.

Latest Place to Avoid!!! I have been going to Newport Fresh for over 10+ year’s, called to place my lunch order I would like to order a simple Chicken bowl with Tempura he says we don’t have that item anymore?(Click) (By the way the menu dated this year 2015 on the Bottom?) So I called Back, May I have a chicken bowl? I called back and placed my order, I thought?(Got another Click) Funny he did not ask my name? So I go to pick up my food, the owner behind the counter, he did not place my order, too busy, he say’s?(the place had 2 customers who had just walked up in front of me.) I would like to order a chicken bowl? he states $ 8.99? I look on his menu Board it says $ 7.99 and the his Website says $ 5.99(He still passes out this menu!) I suggest that if you change prices you should make note of this? especially if it is displayed? He Got all up in my face and pissed off and told me to get out? I got my Money back and called him a D… Head, and left went around the corner and got a much better lunch for less?

Is zero an option? Tried to call in an order for carry out but there is no menu available online so I just order the generics that I knew I would like crunchy roll etc. curious about all the protein bowl hype from the previous Unilocal reviews, I asked him what was in the protein bowl Before ordering. he responded«do I really need to explain this to you, you don’t already know?» I explained there is no menu option online and I was a first time customer — he sighed and stated and said I am not going to explain this to you. Seriously? I hung up and immediately proceeded to write this review. I’ve never experienced such terrible customer service before.

Really fantastic and unique food(5 stars), but terrible customer service(1 star). I have never met a family business who was more consistently rude to their customers. Furthermore, I have seen them charge different prices to different customers from their secret menu(protein bowls). Also, who charges for eel sauce? If I didn’t like their food so much, I would never come back.

How often is the most popular items that a restaurant sells not even on the menu? The Sashimi Bowl is one of the greatest things on earth! I crave it more than I crave In-N-Out Burger… it’s seriously that good! I take it home and add fresh avocado and diced champagne mango and get my fix.
